A word from South Edison
South Edison is one of Montauk's top tables. Offering classic Montauk beach fare with a fresh and creative twist, South Edison is "the model of a summery eatery in a beachy town," says Peter Gianotti of Newsday. Chef Todd Mitgang, of Manhattan's three-star Cascabel Taqueria and formerly of Crave Ceviche Bar, offers a seafood centric menu with inventive flavors. A mere two blocks from the ocean, South Edison offers a menu changing almost daily to highlight the fresh local seafood, most of it sourced from the fishing docks only a mile away. Everything at South Edison from the colors and the furniture to the décor and lighting says Hamptons beach house. Look for creative cocktails such as dirty sandbox, patio pounder and the Montauk mojito at the bar as well as local brews from Six Point Brewery at the bar or in Growlers to go. Whether it's an après beach cocktail and a snack or a candlelit dinner for two, South Edison is a perfect summer spot.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Just okay. Very fresh clams and fluke was great. Bass and seafood "bake" lacked flavor. Extremely noisy!"

  • "This is our 3rd time there for dinner. Atmosphere is bright and pleasant and service wonderful. Knowledgeable staff and one feels welcomed upon arrival. The food is fresh using an array of vegetables tastefully appointed. We arrived earlier than our reserved time and did not have to wait to be seated. Highly recommended. Wish we lived closer to the restaurant as it would be a weekly visit."

  • "Ordered desserts 'to go' to enjoy on the hotel balcony. Waitress put the bulky boxes on the table and walked away. Flagged her down for a bag and utensils and was proudly told that they had neither. As a visitor in a hotel without access to utensils, the desserts were inedible. In the end, they were thrown away."

  • "Very disappointed in the food. I started with the octopus tacos, which had no flavor at all and my wife's salad was 95% bread with very little vegetables. I had the black and blue scallops, which again had no taste. My wife had the striped bass, which she said was good, however at $30+, was a small portion size. My wife spoke to the waitress about the salad, she brought over the menu to show her the description, however didn't offer to make an adjustment. Cocktail and beer selection were good and we skipped dessert. All of our other meals in Montauk were better and less expensive."

  • "Had heard great things about this place, but our visit was disappointing. The best dish was the fluke sashimi appetizer, though a bit sloppy in presentation. A tomato salad with grilled manouri cheese very bland, and the mains were equally ordinary - grilled scallops, fried chicken, grilled tuna. Would not return. Service cheerful but uneven."

  • "We had a delicious dinner here; wonderful flavors and fresh seafood; not to be missed if you're in Montauk for a few days."

  • "we had the lobster buns OUTSTANDING and the grilled lobster over cous cous fantastic"

  • "This casual Montauk hot spot serves up a really great seafood dinner. They have a raw bar, plus several entrees caught that day. But since they are on the Eastern tip of Long Island, that's to be expected. Service is brisk, friendly and somewhat casual. Swells come off their cabin cruisers in resort wear, and sit cheek by jowl with locals and surfers in shorts and sandals. Although they have a varied and well-priced wine list, diners can also bring their own bottles from one of the nearby wineries and enjoy them for a corkage fee of $25. The food is excellent, the location is convenient, and the value is quite good overall. Recommended."

  • "We followed our server's recommendation and tried the striped bass entree that was on the menu for the first time that night. It was outstanding! Grilled fish with roasted heirloom tomatoes, black rice and farm fresh asparagus. Everything was delicious and as fresh as possible. We shared a salted caramel ice cream sandwich for dessert. Try the rose wine from Sancere, France with your fish. It was a great pairing. We highly recommend South Edison."

  • "GREAT FOOD , EXCELLENT SERVICE . THIS IS MY NEW GO TO PLACE IN MONTAUK. THE COLOR SCHEME IS PERFECT REALLY CASUAL BUT HAS THAT NYC FEEL TO IT. THE MENU IS EXTREMELY CREATIVE WITH THE CHEF USING MOSTLY LOCAL SOURCED PRODUCTS. MY OCTOPUS TACO WAS OUTSTANDING AND MY WIFE'S HEIRLOOM TOMATO SALAD WITH CRISPY BASIL LEAFS WAS A PERFECT MARRIAGE. THE HOMEMADE CAVATAPI WAS DELICIOUS . THOUGH I WASN'T THRILLED WITH MY BUTTERMILK CHICKEN I FELT THE RED THAI CHILI SAUCE WAS A LITTLE TO VINEGARY FOR ME . OUR DESSERT WAS A PERFECT ENDING !!! THE PISTACHIO PROFITEROLES DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE THE ICE CREAM HAD TO BE MADE IN HOUSE IS WAS THAT GOOD. COMPLIMENT TO THE CHEF AND STAFF FOR A GREAT DINNER"

  • "Very flavorful albeit miniscule portions. $3 blue point oysters while sitting next to a car on the street? Too expensive for me...shan't be back"

  • "My first time back this season & it wowed. Loved the short rib. All dishes have an incredible combination of flavors."

  • "The food is always excellent at South Edison, the drinks--amazing. I'd have to say, though, the fried clams leave a little something to be desired but the clam bake and seared tuna were wonderful."

  • "We were excited to try South Edison. The menu seems exciting, refreshing and exotic. Diner beware. The only small plate that was edible, were the fried oysters. The carrot/ clam soup was merely carrot broth and cream. The clams must have jumped ship before being served. The Sashimi had a smell so horible it was not edible. The waitress had no opinion on the food what so ever. She offered no insight,no condolences when she took an entire plate of un eaten food away. Pistachio ice cream was really vanilla. No care, concern nor attention paid to the table. The only thing that had real taste was the Taffy but that free salt water taffy came with an expensive price tag, and an evening of just sheer disspointment."

  • "We visit Montauk annually and are always looking for new restaurants to try. South Edison was recommended to me by the staff at a high-end restaurant in Sag Harbor, where I stopped for lunch, on my way into town. And, I have to say, my girlfriends and I were not disappointed. The menu was creative but balanced, offering options for all kinds of palates. The only "mistake" I made was in ordering all items that were very lemony & peppery, including the pepper basil gimlet (which was very good), so everything kind of blended together for me. I did try some of my friend's dishes, and think that all of the food was well-prepared. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and I expect to return."

  • "If it wasn't for the fact that Dave's Grill has such a degrading reservation policy we never would have tried South Edison. We were so glad we did. Atmosphere was relaxed and hip. Menu made it hard to pick just one dish! Service was responsive. What a great meal!"

  • "Nice decor but the food is about average, we shared couple of appetizers, nothing was really special."

  • "My husband and I love it here so much. Every bite you take has nuances that are surprising and perfect. This is our go-to place; it never disappoints."

  • "My friends and I arrived late after Friday night traffic. They easily changed our reservation, and sat us right away even though place was bustling. Food was very good. My only complaint was the timing between apps and main course - we weren't finished with appetizers before the main course came out, and the waitress was a but flighty, but well-intentioned. Overall we were happy we ate there and would definitely go back next time we're out in Montauk."

  • "great food, attentive service, but the noise level can detract from the overall experience. Very attractive décor. I'd go back."

  • "Not much to choose from. No steak ot pasta. Didnt like wine by the glass selection. Didnt like the apps. "

  • "South Edison was delicious as always. We went there 2 days in a row!"

  • "We've been coming here since they opened three years ago. The first year impressed us with their original and unique menu. Last season we ate there about 3-4 times, and each time there seemed to be a disappointment of one kind or another, either with the quality of the food or the service or the noise level. So we tried them again Saturday evening May 10. The food was again original and excellent. The corn/crab chowder was unique and very tastee; the octopus tacos (a holdover from last year) were as good as they've ever been. We ordered the three lobster roll sliders ($27) and the Scottish salmon as entrees and were not disappointed at all. That said, this is really pre-season. The real test will come during the season. Here's hoping…"

  • "Enjoyed South Edison when it first opened. They still struggle a bit with the Saturday night crowd (ran of wine glasses?) but are professional. Food is consistently inventive and very good but would like an addition or two to the menu over the course of the summer."

  • "Our server Jessica was amazing, food was delicious. I would only tone down the salt on the caramel dessert, but otherwise everything was excellent. South Edison never fails to create an amazing dining experience."

  • "Away on vacation in Montauk and wanted to visit a special Resturant. Went through Trip Advisor and got good reviews. We agree with those reviews. The service, food and wine was very good. Excellent waitress."

  • "We went with a group of people and we were disappointed. First in the service- that they took 20 min to get someone at our table for drink service. Then we ordered the Kale chips & they were SO greasy; the grilled romaine salad was nothing to write home about and our entrees were fair. Best thing at the table was the fried chicken."

  • "I visited South Edison a few times this summer and consistently had the same experience. The food is awesome, the waitstaff is so-so, and with a reservation sometime you had to wait, which isn't the end of the world because they have one of the best bartenders in town."

  • "South Edison is without a doubt one of the top restaurants in Montauk"

  • "I have been to South Edison twice now and in my opinion it is the best restaurant in Montauk."
    Dined on 8/12/2013
  • "South Edison never disappoints. We have eaten there several times and it's always our best meal in Montauk. We love the creativity of the dishes, the quality of the preparation, the freshness of the local produce and seafood. And the service is casual, but attentive and very helpful. Although the menu might be considered small by some, there is a wide variety of choices and we always find something to please everyone. Try the fried olives, a delicious surprise. The prices are high, like most places in Montauk, but definitely worth it. Our only issue with South Edison is how hard it is to get a reservation."

  • "We went to South Edison again. And again had great experience. This restaurant is on the top of my list to be recommended to people trying to make good dinner plans. Food was excellent so was the service. Cant wait to come back"

  • "Went here Tuesday night for 7 pm reservation. Restaurant wasn't very crowded...surprising for Montauk. Service was inattentive...waitress never checked to see if we needed anything, waited for seafood forks and cracker for Jonas crabs and was then unavailable to take payment...paid in cash and left. Food was good in spots...oysters, lobster sliders, smoked potatoes; other food not very good...baked clams, fried belly clams dry and shriveled. Pretty expensive considering service and spotty food."

  • "The lobster roll appetizers were the best I've ever had! The seafood was so fresh. I had the prawns and would have preferred to not see the heads. But they tasted great!"

  • "we ate at South Edison last summer while vacationing in Montauk, and i have been looking forward to going back for a whole year. This year's meal did not disappoint! even though they were out of kale chips :( i was able to enjoy what i believe to be the perfect entree--lobster sliders! imagine...lobster meat, butter and brioche! What could be better. We sat outside on picnic tables, just a block from the beach (you can smell the salt-air) with just enough light to provide ambiance, while classic rock soundtrack played. pure heaven! if you're in montauk, don't miss it!"
