Diner Reviews
  • "Great place to eat before attending a concert at SF Jazz. So convenient, without any rush to make it to your seat. Just walk out of the restaurant, and into your concert next door. Wide selection of drinks and food to enjoy. Limited number of tables, so make a reservation!!! Lots of great tasty bits, flavored a little different than that in New Orleans. Order yourself a drink, appetizers, dinner, and dessert. With your stomach fully satisfied, now you can give your ears a sweet treat also!"

  • "I've now been to South numerous times, usually in conjunction with a performance at SFJAZZ. My first experience left much to be desired in terms of food and service but now they are clicking as the phantastic Charles Phan should! I prefer dark meat so that's what they bring me...not, succulent and seasoned. It comes with a sauce, which I find unnecessary (this is not a fast food joint). Everything is a la carte so nothing comes with the chicken. Order some vegetables (whatever is in season) or a salad (I love the trout salad when it is available). The cornbread is delicious...but it's just bite or two. REname the chocolate cake with peanuts (sprinkled, I think) It was more of a peanut butter & chocolate cake. Not my favorite. "

  • "Your restaurant management needs to step up. I have eaten dinner at South several times. The dinner service has always been slow and very unorganized. Not a professional wait staff. The redemption is that the food is decent. I was there again this past Saturday. Went to the bar for wine, there were 4 bartenders working and they were very unorganized. Tripping all over each other. Atmosphere: boring Consistant hours: I was told the restaurant was going to be open every evening? Open sign: Which door does one go through to get to the restaurant? It changes almost every time I have been there. Lunch/brunch: Are they open for either on a regular basis?"

  • "We went for lunch before a matinee at the ballet. The food was pretty meh. Corn bread was dry, fried chicken was moist, but the breading was too salty, salad was not very engaging, rice/beans uninspired. There was just nothing to wow and with so many great restaurants around, this doesn't stand out. Service was fine, but a little inattentive, especially considering how few tables were full. I wouldn't go back, but if you can't find anywhere else before a show, it's fine."

  • "South provides a week placed dining spot before a concert, whether the Jazz Center or the Symphony or opera. The atmosphere is always friendly, the food good and the drinks week made."

  • "Feels a bit like an upscale cafeteria vs. a nice restaurant. Sadly I think they could have done a nicer job at the decor, but with that said, the food was nice and the service good as well. Definitely not of the caliber of the facility that it is in nor the quality of the jazz center overall, but acceptable. They went out of their way for a cocktail or 2 and did a great job making things nice and timely and comfortable. I'll go back with the expectation accordingly."

  • "Can't stay away from that crispy fried chicken- crispy-dry on the outside, succulent on the inside. Don't miss the special cornbread-- or the greens-- or the flavorful beans and rice. Two great beers on tap."

  • "If you are catching a show at SF Jazz, this place is convenient as it is literally in the same building...but as far as the food goes....Meh. Very limited menu with a "southern" style, but for our tastes, not all that good, definitely not "special" in any way - small portions too - the drinks are good but quite small (i.e. not generous) for the price. Service was good enough. all in all...we don't need to go back there...at least not for dinner."

  • "We enjoy South either on a show night at the SFJAZZ Center and on the quieter non-show evenings. The unique and sometimes high-end spirits, the hand-cut ice, and bartenders that know how to craft the classics satisfy my inner cocktail nerd. On the food side, fried chicken is a perennial fave, but the small menu offers a small selection of other southern-inspired dishes: tonight it was the pork ribs, mashed potatoes, and rapini. Delicious."

  • "Good food and great music at SF Jazz and only park once! One stop shopping."

  • "So, the redeeming quality of our experience here was the service--our server knew her stuff, was quick to offer answers to questions, and seemed to really care that we had a good experience. However, the views were very poor, and it was clear that this restaurant only exists as a feeder experience prior to the jazz showcased at the center. My partner and I felt that we were eating dinner in a culinary school cafeteria. Not appropriate for a romantic dinner. :( The crowd was also rather old--we also felt like we were eating in an assisted living cafeteria. Even the menus were printed on cheap paper. Not a great experience, and we won't return."

  • "We had tickets to see Wynton Marsalis and wanted to attend the pre-talk, so eating on site was very convenient. Jazzy ambience and New Orleans inspired food. Fresh, fast and delicious! We will be back!"

  • "The Chef has taken South (Southern cuisine) to a whole new level. My rating would have been 5 stars for the food but everything I tried was a little too spicy for my palate. The broccolini was the best. My husband, however, was in heaven and loved all the spicyness even the little bottle of colorful chili sauce that puts Tabasco to shame."

  • "Great pre performance dining spot. I have found the food inconsistent. The latest visit, the food was consistently good. The service was terrible. I always leave a 20% tip, However, everyone in my party of 4 said "No Way!" and I agreed."

  • "We had a good dining experience . However we were surprised to get an email later that evening that our reservation had been canceled, presumably because we supposedly were no shows. I called the restaurant twice to have this corrected but could not reach a person. They did not return my two voicemail messages. I emailed the restaurant but they did not respond. The fact that you can't reach a live person and that they are so unresponsive demonstrates a restaurant that does not care about its customers--and perhaps a restaurant that is trying to avoid paying Open Table a commission for reservations."

  • "The unfortunate position of the bar at the far end of the restaurant forces people to traipse through the middle of South just to get a beverage to drink in the lobby. The constant flow of people between the theatre and bar through the middle of South makes relaxed dining impossible. South's dinner prices and upscale menu/prices demand less intrusion and confusion. The space would be more appropriately used for more casual food. On Sunday a 7 pm curtain a 5:30 restaurant opening was not enough time to enjoy a relaxed meal. For such an early curtain, South needs to open by 5:00 pm. The limited menu makes sense for the kitchen but it seems like the majority of entrees were spicy with limited non-spicy choices confined mostly to side items."

  • "Great place for a bite or drink before or after a SF Jazz event. I really lover the setting, right there on Franklin an Fell. Very open to the street and the goings on in the area. The food is fine and the service we had was excellent. I loved the fried oysters, best this side of NOLA."

  • "Nice place for a decent meal and comfortable atmosphere. Low key.. Enjoyable food, although a limited but interesting menu. Not busy when I was there, so not too loud. Could get really noisy with a full house. Large, CLEAN windows were a great view into the outside world, made the place feel very spacious. Service very accommodating and thoughtful. I recommend it."

  • "The poor service marred our brunch for 4 before a performance at the Opera House. We had to ask the waiter repeatedly for our drinks and the check. the food is better than the spartan tableware- lea was served in rounded tea cups with no saucers. Teapots held one cup of tea only and the odd design had the lids falling off when pouring. Taste was good but the portion sizes varied dramatically- the trout salad was quite small and not filling while the chicken sandwich was huge. They may intend in the small space to be a "gulp and go", who-cares-about-the-service place, but with Charles Phan's name on the door, my expectation on my first visit was that it would be better than that."

  • "We had tickets to a Jazz Center performance and were looking forward to trying South. We are fans of Southern cooking. For appetizers we ordered deviled eggs (very tasty), boudin balls (undercooked and bland), and biscuits (small, dry and cold). The Mary's fried chicken was delicious, moist and crunchy. Sides were uneven. The red beans and rice were bland, the mac and cheese had good flavor but seemed to made on the stovetop. It had no crusty, crunchy bits one expects from the traditionally baked dish. The broccolini was the spiciest dish of the meal and very good. Our waiter was very inattentive. We had to keep flagging him down for wine refills, etc. Wait staff at other tables treated their patrons very well and seemed very friendly."

  • "Our server had a hard time answering questions about the menu and had to come back more than once to correct what he had told us. We had the wedge salad, fried chicken andpork chop. The chicken was dry, the coating while crispy was not well seasoned, the southern sauce saved this dish. The pork chop looked great however the creole seasoning was just floating on the top and did not flavor the meat all the way through, it was also helped by the southern sauce that came with the chicken. The salad dressing on the wedge overpowered the blue cheese crumbles instead of enhancing and the lardons seemed especially salty. Wine list was limited with some great Riesling choices. My cocktail Street something was the highlight."

  • "Sadly, South did NOT have the Shrimp & Grits on this occasion... which is what I came for. It's still on the online menu! They were "OUT" of my second choice... at 12 Noon... even tho the restaurant just opened at 11:30 AM !!! Staff people were pleasant & courteous... but that did not make up for South's missing food items."

  • "South lived up to the good reviews I have seen. Service was also good despite other reviews. One mistake only on server's part and that was she picked up a napkin that had fallen to the floor and gave it back to my companion. Tasty food in good portion sizes."

  • "Fried chicken is the dish to get. Moist and flavorful throughout. the cod was dry, Pork was chewy. Its a great spot for a before concert dinner. Stick with the chicken. Fried okra and oysters so so."

  • "Thanks so much for the tastes as I struggled to find the right wine for my fried chicken! I really appreciated that the bar waiter was willing to listen to my preferences and tailor the wine until I found a perfect match! This made that whole evening at South very personal and a mid-week treat."

  • "We had reservations for the 9:30pm show at SF Jazz. We decided to try South at SF Jazz for dinner because of it's proximity to the show venue. The menu is very limited. Look ahead of time to make sure there is something on it you would enjoy. We split a wedge salad which was a good start. I had the jambalaya and my husband had the pork chop, which were very good. We shared a rum cake for dessert, also very good. Our waitress was outstanding. There when we needed something, but left us alone to enjoy a leisurely meal. She was also very engaging. We will try some of the other restaurants around SF Jazz, but we will go back to SF Jazz South as it was a very positive experience."

  • "We had dinner before the symphony and arrived early at 6pm. The service was so quick that we ended up being early. The waitress said that they try to turn over quickly because they know people are all trying to get to a show. We had the jumbalaya and blackened cod which were excellent. The menu is small, and my only suggestion for a better experience would have been to have a larger menu."

  • "The food was excellent. We wish there would have been some bands playing like at Yoshi's though as it is inside the SF Jazz, or at least something that reminds us we were inside the SF Jazz building… Our main concern was that they did not want to serve us the dessert that was in the Valentine's menu while they have not even sold a lot of it for the night….certainly to sell it on the next day? Anyway our waitress was outstanding and offered us a cappuccino with some small coconut/chocolate/almonds candies. She also knew her wine very well and gave a very good advice. We will still come back despite the non-flexible policy from the restaurant about the menu..."

  • "What a disappointing experience. It's not that difficult for a restaurant to do brunch well, still South failed on all fronts. The service was haphazard and neglectful, the food was not very good. We had the jambalaya (tiny serving, not much flavor) and the fried chicken sandwich (small random pieces of fried chicken - including bones!) When I mentioned that there were bones in my sandwich to the waiter, he said he'd tell the kitchen, and then never came back, it took two tries from both him and another waiter to get the bill. Would not come back here again."

  • "Two of us shared the Cauliflower salad as a sort of salad/appetizer dish. It was very tasty, with several kinds of cauliflower on a bed of kale. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits to find out why people like it, although I was dubious about whether I would like the grits. It was excellent. It could just as well be called Shrimp and Creamy Polenta, and consisted of juicy shrimp in a flavorful red sauce over creamy grits. I am not a fan of hip industrial gray concrete decor combined with excessive noise, so I don't give the place high marks for ambiance, but the service was great and it was nice to be able to proceed straight from our table to the performance."

  • "We were in the restaurant between sfjazz shows. The bar was overrun and because the tables aren't separated we were surrounded by bar goers, basically staring at butts. Not good. This restaurant needs a redesign. Servers wonderful though."

  • "I chose this restaurant to make it easier for my 83 year-old father and I to eat before seeing Bill Frisell in Miner Auditorium. The hostess was friendly, elegant and efficient; our waitress, Allisa, provided the perfect amount of attention and was equally friendly and efficient. My father had the blackened cod and a side of red beans and rice, I had the pork chop and a side of collard greens. The food was truly outstanding, perfectly cooked (no small feat with the incredibly thick pork chop I got) and gloriously seasoned. The portions were also just right for us. We had a 5:30 reservation on a Thursday. My father and I both found the room to be sterile, incongruous with both the excellent food and the amazing music found next door."
