A word from Soif Wine Bar Restaurant

Chef Santos Majano’s menu changes almost daily, though every dish – small plates, appetizers, entrées and desserts – emphasizes seasonal, sustainably grown, and intensely flavored ingredients primarily sourced from local farmers and provisioners.

Soif offers over 50 wines by the glass from small, artisanal producers, as well as some 400 selections by the bottle from our wine shop, available to diners for $10 over retail price.

We find our delight in discovering the distinctive, expressive wines, sourcing and preparing delicious, wholesome food, and then putting it all together so when guests walk in the door, night after night, there is something here for them that is authentic – that satisfies their thirst for the soulful, the delicious, and the well made.

  • "My wife and I enjoyed Soif so much on our short visit to Santa Cruz we returned the next nights to bring out travelling companions. Food really good (though a limited menu which was fine by me since the lamb was worth having twice !) and a very interesting, eclectic wine list. The service could not have been better and both nights our waitresses were very knowledgeable on the wines and advised on pairings - and all of us were experienced wine drinkers (sounds like winos but don't mean that !). I rarely write restaurant reviews but this place was standout."

  • "Soif is a delightful neighborhood gem in downtown Santa Cruz, CA. The menu is inventive and incredibly well executed. We had the Burrata and pork belly appetizers and both were outstanding. Entrees we the perfect size and the flavor profiles and interesting ingredients were perfectly paired with unique wine choices. The service was friendly and unpretentious but these folks definitely know their wines. This was our second visit and we will definitely be back!"

  • "The ambience is very nice and the musical group performing Monday night was really excellent. (Caution, however: The sound volume approached the point where it made conversation impossible.) Food was very good: The Miyagi oysters were fresh and delicious. The pork roast could have been served a bit hotter with more fat trimmed off, but it was basically fine. I wish the wine list were expanded, more varied, and offered more central California wines. I also think Soif should offer the choice of a house red and white for the more economically-minded diners. Overall, a very pleasant evening with very good food and music in a chic atmosphere."

  • "¨This is not only a fine dining experience in that the food is, to use a cliché, to die for. The food is well presented on the plate and there is a suggested pairing. The waiters; however, are willing to work with the diners' questions and wine preferences. And when the wine is served and the food laid on the table there you are set for a palatable evening romancing not only your senses, but romancing your honey."

  • "One of my favorites in Santa Cruz and has been for a long time. lately, the food has gotten even better and I'm wondering if they brought in a new chef. My one and only complaint is that I wish they had one or two things that they consistently kept on the menu. The one I really miss is the passion fruit tart! That was one of the very best things I've ever eaten!! But even without such a wonderful dessert, this is one of the very best restaurants in Santa Cruz. Don't miss it."

  • "Soif's an infrequent stop because you can have a glass of wine and a couple small plates and before you know it you've spent $150! But we were treating a friend, so. The soup, something pureed with squash in it, was fabulous! I took a bite and couldn't speak for a moment! Their house-cured salmon plate has a dreamy sauce, pea shoots, and slivers of their own pickles. The Romano beans & mushrooms sounded good but I think it's too early for Romanos. They were tough, not very meaty, too oily for my taste. Gotta have the piquillo peppers stuffed with melty Manchego goodness & drizzled with a basil oil! Service relaxed & friendly. I loved my sparkling Ettore Germano Brut Rose Nebbiolo. The chocolate Pot de Creme was unremarkable and very small."

  • "The food is just so excellent. Sugar snap pea & spinach soup excellent. I can smell the fresh snap pea. Roasted beets & fava beans w/ market greens very freshing. The Entree :Fava bean & ricotta ravioli was amazingly good. Even as a meat lover, i can totally go with this vegan dish. Duck confit was tasty also. 4.5 star!!!"

Bar area was confused and lacked general serving skills. Seating was inadequate and uncomfortable - zero privacy and exposed to others loud comments. They should add some spice and seasoning to their bland food. Lava cake was good. Overall would rather go to Assembly, or Oswald, or Aquarius, or Main Street Garden.. even Solaire is better.. "

  • "We were a party of 4 and had an exquisite experience. Two of us had the scallops with turnips - delicious. Two of us had the Quail - also delicious. We each had to try both. The scallops & Quail were perfectly cooked. We had two desserts: the banana crepes which were good but a little too sweet and chocolate moulten cake perfectly cooked, moist inside, with a great taste of rich chocolate. We had a bottle of Verdichhio white wine which was a perfect match to our food. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the food, the spices and underlying tastes and more. Very good experience. We plan to return."

  • "The hostess was very flexible by holding our table a half hour after our reservation time as we were late. It was a busy Saturday night so the noise level was energetic but not too loud to have a conversation. It took 10-15 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order. She was very pleasant and had great recommendations but seemed too busy to spend much time with us. We completed our appetizers at a leisurely pace, then there was a good 15-20 minute wait for entrees. We flagged down our waitress and ordered desert while eating entrees so that it would arrive by the time we were done. Overall I thought wine flights were interesting, food was creative and good (chicken liver seemed a little runny and chalky).The service was slow side."

  • "I came to this restaurant because I read great things about the food. I had the shrimp and chorizo risotto which I really enjoyed but when you go to a "wine bar/ restaurant" I expect the staff to be very knowledgeable about the wine and to be reasonably helpful, especially when you are out of the glass of wine that I order, to suggest a wine that is close in cost and/or flavor would be the professional thing to do. Instead I was suggested one of the most expensive glasses and when I was reluctant because of cost she simply left to "give me more time." My fiance had to get her attention to call her over to ask to suggest something else. To me great food is not so hard to find, it is great service that makes restaurants truly great."

  • "The wine list is amazing and they also have a wine shop in the restaurant that you can purchase and have at your dinner table. We ordered a bottle of the sparkling rose, charcuterie plate, cheese plate as well as some small vegetable sides. When the food arrived it was wonderfully displayed and we could not wait to dive in! Our server was great and checked in on us from time to time to refill our glasses and talk "food and wine" with us. She was even so nice as to give me the name of the olive oil company that they use for their bread dip! At the end of our meal, and bottle, she presented us with a dessert menu. Normally I would decline because I am not a "dessert" person but we went with the lemon tart and it was divine!"

Waiter noted tables now have adjustable legs so they don't need to get on there knees with paper to balance them. Food was wonderful. Wine paring perfect.   • "Their butterscotch pudding is to die for so when we saw it on the menu it was without question my dessert choice. They suggested a Chenin Blanc dessert wine to pair. Wine and pudding?!?!?!? I thought. We went for each. Each individually outstanding. Together, absolute magic on the tongue. These folks know their stuff when it comes to pairing so don't short yourself the experience. Also the speakeasy band they have play on Mondays just enjoys the heck out of themselves and is so sweet an experience."

  • "Thought the four of us would have an cozy evening of good food and wine. Walked in to the smell of greasy fish/game permeating the whole dining room. Waitress a little cocky with her first comment to us as we were seated; she didn't get much of a response from any of us and the service went down hill from there. She walked away before all of us had ordered, and then served a dish that had only been inquired about. Generally the food is mediocre (overly salty salad, how do you do that?) and the immaturity of our waitress, i.e. not coming back to check on our food, having other wait staff take additional orders, or serve food, made for an unpleasant experience. Definitely won't even bother giving them another try. Three strikes, you're out."
