A word from Soif Wine Bar Restaurant

Chef Santos Majano’s menu changes almost daily, though every dish – small plates, appetizers, entrées and desserts – emphasizes seasonal, sustainably grown, and intensely flavored ingredients primarily sourced from local farmers and provisioners.

Soif offers over 50 wines by the glass from small, artisanal producers, as well as some 400 selections by the bottle from our wine shop, available to diners for $10 over retail price.

We find our delight in discovering the distinctive, expressive wines, sourcing and preparing delicious, wholesome food, and then putting it all together so when guests walk in the door, night after night, there is something here for them that is authentic – that satisfies their thirst for the soulful, the delicious, and the well made.

  • "We were a party of 4 and had an exquisite experience. Two of us had the scallops with turnips - delicious. Two of us had the Quail - also delicious. We each had to try both. The scallops & Quail were perfectly cooked. We had two desserts: the banana crepes which were good but a little too sweet and chocolate moulten cake perfectly cooked, moist inside, with a great taste of rich chocolate. We had a bottle of Verdichhio white wine which was a perfect match to our food. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the food, the spices and underlying tastes and more. Very good experience. We plan to return."

  • "The wine was nice. The food was mediocre except for desert which was quite good. The service was good and prompt."

  • "Soif is unlike any other fine dining establishment anywhere, must be experienced. If you love wine, especially if you know a lot about it, Soif is where you need to go next. I always get only 2-oz. tastings so i can try as many wines as possible in an evening. They have the most unusual and broadly informed wine selection I have ever seen anywhere. Love it."

  • "The hostess was very flexible by holding our table a half hour after our reservation time as we were late. It was a busy Saturday night so the noise level was energetic but not too loud to have a conversation. It took 10-15 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order. She was very pleasant and had great recommendations but seemed too busy to spend much time with us. We completed our appetizers at a leisurely pace, then there was a good 15-20 minute wait for entrees. We flagged down our waitress and ordered desert while eating entrees so that it would arrive by the time we were done. Overall I thought wine flights were interesting, food was creative and good (chicken liver seemed a little runny and chalky). The service was slow side."

  • "I came to this restaurant because I read great things about the food. I had the shrimp and chorizo risotto which I really enjoyed but when you go to a "wine bar/ restaurant" I expect the staff to be very knowledgeable about the wine and to be reasonably helpful, especially when you are out of the glass of wine that I order, to suggest a wine that is close in cost and/or flavor would be the professional thing to do. Instead I was suggested one of the most expensive glasses and when I was reluctant because of cost she simply left to "give me more time." My fiance had to get her attention to call her over to ask to suggest something else. To me great food is not so hard to find, it is great service that makes restaurants truly great."

  • "Had a very nice early Valentine's Day dinner with my husband. Tables are too close together to be romantic. Felt very crowded."

  • "The wine list is amazing and they also have a wine shop in the restaurant that you can purchase and have at your dinner table. We ordered a bottle of the sparkling rose, charcuterie plate, cheese plate as well as some small vegetable sides. When the food arrived it was wonderfully displayed and we could not wait to dive in! Our server was great and checked in on us from time to time to refill our glasses and talk "food and wine" with us. She was even so nice as to give me the name of the olive oil company that they use for their bread dip! At the end of our meal, and bottle, she presented us with a dessert menu. Normally I would decline because I am not a "dessert" person but we went with the lemon tart and it was divine!"

  • "HI there, I had heard great things about Soif, and I'd characterize it as good, but not great. That being said, I am not much of a wine drinker, so I think the highlight of the restaurant was lost on us. If we were more of wine drinkers, I think I'd rate it much higher. As for the food, it was good, nicely presented, but portion sizes were small and I found the menu options to be very limited and were more on weird side (I guess I am a foodie, but not that much of a foodie) We left feeling hungry, but the dessert options were a little too "out there" for us. I think it would be considered a great restaurant, but we weren't the right customers. In the Santa Cruz/monterey area, we prefer La Posta or Passionfish."

  • "Soif brings excellent food, service and wine selection to downtown Santa Cruz, with a Santa Cruz friendly and welcoming attitude. It manages to keep the prices at a very good quality/quantity ratio too."

  • "Revisted this week after they were closed for a bit for kitchen updates. Also a few updates in the dining room. Waiter noted tables now have adjustable legs so they don't need to get on there knees with paper to balance them. Food was wonderful. Wine paring perfect. We were well taken care of by the wait staff."

  • "Their butterscotch pudding is to die for so when we saw it on the menu it was without question my dessert choice. They suggested a Chenin Blanc dessert wine to pair. Wine and pudding?!?!?!? I thought. We went for each. Each individually outstanding. Together, absolute magic on the tongue. These folks know their stuff when it comes to pairing so don't short yourself the experience. Also the speakeasy band they have play on Mondays just enjoys the heck out of themselves and is so sweet an experience."

  • "This is my top pick as a foodie for Santa Cruz. The meals are unique, local and well paired. They also provide a great education on wines that will compliment the dish"

  • "Thought the four of us would have an cozy evening of good food and wine. Walked in to the smell of greasy fish/game permeating the whole dining room. Waitress a little cocky with her first comment to us as we were seated; she didn't get much of a response from any of us and the service went down hill from there. She walked away before all of us had ordered, and then served a dish that had only been inquired about. Generally the food is mediocre (overly salty salad, how do you do that?) and the immaturity of our waitress, i.e. not coming back to check on our food, having other wait staff take additional orders, or serve food, made for an unpleasant experience. Definitely won't even bother giving them another try. Three strikes, you're out."

  • "The "ambiance" rating would have been higher if there were table clothes, flowers, and candles, etc. which a typical restaurant should have. May be it was new years eve, the waitress was rushing. We have to go back at normal times to truly evaluate this place. I like the food presentation on my plate, the dessert hits the spot, portion is small but I feel I have eaten. That's what it counts. Half of the restaurant is the wine shop, I picked up a bottle after having it at the dinner table and liked it."

  • "For 7 pm on a Friday night the service was remarkably prompt. The wait staff had that rare but winning combination of being friendly but not overbearing. I had the bouillabaisse with the recommended pairing and my husband had the seared duck with the recommended pairing as well. Both were excellent. We'll be coming back."

  • "I love Soif! They have an incredible wine list, and if you sit at the bar, make sure to ask the bartender, Julie, what she'd recommend. She is brilliant when it comes to wine. I think Soif's food is divine too. Sometimes it's outrageously delicious, other times it's just down-home tasty, but it's always well-prepared and interesting. I don't think they have the greatest desserts, but you can always skip the sweets and have a great after-dinner drink. All around, one of the best places to go out in Santa Cruz."

  • "We were seated 30 minutes after our reservation and promptly told they were out of all entered except for 2. We ordered 1 bland over priced quail and an assortment of sides. But oops put of those as well and the radicchio salad came with out the described ingredients. The worst part was, they showed no remorse."

  • "Soif always delivers. Food, as ever, was extremely tasty. A bit pricey for the portion size, but at the same time, given the quality I never complain. Wine list always has something interesting to try, and the servers know what they're talking about if you have questions about the wines/wine-food pairings."

  • "It's hard to do pork well, and Soif didn't quite hit the mark on this occasion. I had difficulty slicing it even with the meat knife provided. I also had difficulty chewing. The rest of the meal was delicious."

  • "I like that the portions are small, but the quail didn't make it for me. Sorry. Otherwise, great. Not sure my enthusiasm to return, but thanks, I am glad you are there. Jenny"

  • "It took the waiter 20 minutes to visit our table after we were seated. He was rude and dismissive. The food was served cold. No apologies and we had to hunt down our waiter to complain. We then had to track him down to get the bill and, surprise, nothing was deducted. We asked to see the manager and when he arrived at the table, he had no idea what was going on. The table next to us complained of slow service and undercooked food. We will never go back."

  • "My wife and I want to like Soif, but more often than not, poor service detracts from our enjoyment of the food. As a table of 4, we have waited 40 minutes before a waiter was available to take our order. A couple of nights ago, the two of us waited 40 minutes for our appetizer to appear. By then we had finished the wine that was "paired" with the appetizer, and bar staff had already delivered the wine that was suppose to be paired with our main course. When we complained about the wait, the bar staff wine deliverer replied "I'm not surprised. The kitchen is swamped." This is an excuse we've heard before. The kitchen and wait staff are not capable of meeting the demand when their dining room is full."

  • "I frequented Soif regularly 4 years ago. I stopped eating there because my friends didn't think it was good value for the portions. We often left hungry after spending $100.00. It had been so long I went on a whim and was pleasantly surprised at the portions and continued excellent quality. I'll be back in again and frequently."

  • "Our server recommended the brussel sprout and smoked chevrie small plate and halibut appetizer and she was so right. They were delicious. She chose wine to pair with our selections and the pairings were perfect. She was attentive and helpful. What a pleasant experience!"

  • "How can you go wrong, We have been here a couple of times now and have not been disappointed. Tapas Tuesday is a great chance to try a good assortment of great dishes and the wine flights are pretty decent. The staff is great and knowledgeable if you are adventurous let them pair your meal with the wines and enjoy."

  • "Soif is super yummy but a bit on the spendy side, so it was perfect for SC Restaurant Week. I hadn't been in a while and I had forgotten how completely GREAT the food is. Taste, texture, temperature. The culinary perfection at Soif makes me angry at bad food. :)"

  • "Elements of the food were good: and even delicious: the soup and the roast pork belly. The rest was very mediocre. The chocolate dessert tasted like something from a cheap supermarket pudding packet;; the tagliatelle was almost crunchy along with the cubes of roast vegetable spread throughout its tasty pork sauce. However the portion size of my dish was better that that of my companion's micro-slice of trout. This was not a cheap experience either our bill was over $100 for two. Yes we had a glass of wine and that was the highlight of the meal but this would be the primary reason you'd want to go back to Soif. Do not go there expecting a good meal. Order a mouthful or two of something along with your wine but not a meal."

  • "Really good food at a fair price. Ambiance is casual, understated, but OK. We were there on a Monday evening and were surprised by the very enjoyable live music. There is an adjoining wine shop, so the wine selection is above average with modest markups. There is something for everyone on the menu, and each course was well prepared. It was our first visit, but we will return next time we are in the area."

  • "The Chef has a most imaginative and tasty touch in many of the foods. Seasonal menu with no repeat dishes so citing one is not helpful but everything we tried was excellent. Appetizers, salads, main courses all had his touch. This is on a level of the better San Francisco Restaurants."
