A word from Sociale
Sociale (say - "SO-SHEE-AH-LAY!") was born in the bistros of Florence and raised here in Presidio heights. Laughter and Italian music are heard floating up from the star-lit, heated patio greeting you from the discreet garden alley below. Families and friends leaving the frenetic pace of the city behind can experience a lighter and decidedly more Italian mood celebrating in our new private dining room, the traditional room or on the patio as the irresistible scents of warm pastas, herb-infused meats, and the sweet honey and nut coated sfingi with vanilla bean gelato shake permeate the surrounding space. Bewitching and eclectic wines from Italy and California complement the weekly changing menus that Chef Tia Harrison crafts with joy and delight for our neighborhood friends!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary at Sociale. Upon arriving we were given champagne, which was followed by a delicious meal. Our waitress was very professional, but also sociable. All in all it was a very nice evening at Sociale."

  • "We went to Sociale to celebrate our daughter's Birthday. We were a group of 5 and sat on the patio. It was a lovely evening and the food and service was wonderful."

  • "We are very happy we decided to try Sociale. We enjoyed the food and were impressed with the wine recommended by one of our team of helpers. We will definitely return for authentic Italian cooking."

  • "The high points of Sociale are that it is very elegant for a neighborhood spot and it has a quiet atmosphere so you can easily converse with your dining companions. The food does not excite me. Pasta dishes seem heavy, and shrimp in my latest visit was tired."

  • "We always love going to Sociale. My wife ran into many friends there."

  • "Very interesting menu. The food was very good, and the service was great. I can't say it's the most amazing Italian restaurant I've been to in San Francisco, but it's certainly a more interesting and creative take on Italian than most."

  • "Sociale never disappoints, it is always excellent, cozy with great atmosphere!"

  • "One wants a clock to keep good time. One wants a restaurant to be consistent. Since we live in Texas and Sociale is in San Francisco, I cannot speak to the day to day consistency, but we have visited there often enough over the years to have noticed if Sociale was not consistent. The service, the food and the atmosphere have been the same, fantastic, every time we have visited, regardless of the day of the week. This visit was no different. We brought members of our family who live in the bay area, but never took our advice to dine at Sociale. They were impressed and said they would return. I won't describe the meals, but there were no leftovers to take home. I will say the Chocolate Oblivion Cake and Sfingi (see menu) are a must!"

  • "The apps and desserts were great but the entrees were sorely lacking. The sea bass we had was majority under seasoned and pretty unimpressive in general."

  • "Warm and comfortable with a great staff and very good food"

  • "We just got back from spending 3 weeks in Italy - great food, great wine, and great dining "culture". It was very hard to "face" our restaurants where you feel like they want you out before you even got in.... and there is also the food part. Yes, we do have tons of restaurants but you can count the good ones on your fingers... Sociale was unexpectedly amazing. We live in the neighborhood but always end up in Spruce across the street. Well honestly, as the food goes, Sociale was better. Every single dish we had was creative, perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. ... Way to go! Plus they have a beautiful outdoor space as well!"

  • "Always very good. An asset to the neighborhood. We are lucky to have them."

  • "Nice but the noise level was ear splitting the night we were there. Food was good, not great. As a neighborhood venue I would return. Good atmosphere and very accommodating staff."

  • "Four of us went there for lunch on a Thu. The restaurant was not that busy. But the service was slow and the wait staff were not paying attention to what we need. The food was disappointing too."

  • "The atmosphere was very romantic and quiet. The service was very good, the food was good even if not a perfect italian food. The winery was fair"

  • "Our server was excellent and very attentive, the courses were brought and taken away at a very good pace for our dinner"

  • "Overall we had a very pleasant evening. it was a belated birthday dinner for my partner. The restaurant was reviewed on Check Please Bay Area. In addition my partner used to work with a woman who used to have a restaurant in that space back in the day. Our server Leah was the best. She managed to comp a couple of items that we had not expected. I didn't notice it until after we had left otherwise her tip would have been a bit more. My partner had the game hen off the prix fixe menu, his only complaint was that the bird came out a little rare for his tastes and it was quckly resolved. Crostini with the marrow was way too dry/hard. I had the pappardelle, the flavor was great although the pasta a little too al dente for me. We will return."

  • "Very good service, timely commitment to reservation, good food, good wine list, attractive interior, quiet. Only beef was the beef. The steak featured on the menu was tough and difficult to chew."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Hello The backyard setting is lovely like an homage to an Venice cafe with some lovely heaters. The service is attentive and friendly. The wait staff is knowlegeable. The issus is that the food is basically good but not great. The flank steak is better the the grilled quail."

  • " the Dine About Town Lunch. Like the previous rater, it was nothing special. I'd give this one a pass (meaning, skip it) and try something else more worthy. "

  • "My wife and I dined here on a foggy Friday evening and were taken back to our trips to Italy over the years: a cafe at the end of a hidden alleyway, outdoor patio (which was heated and well-shielded from the cool breezes up on the street), fresh squash blossoms stuffed with ricotta and drizzled with freshly-made pesto, gnocchi with a pork ragout, and even a bone marrow crostini appetizer! All this was paired with a great Chianti. Only the profiteroles seemed not to fit in, and left a bit to be desired. Overall a very pleasant meal and evening out!"

  • "Prix fixe lunch set at reasonable price with a delicious gazpacho but the flank steak was very tough and the waiter sad the kitchen could only cook the meat medium. I preserved and got a somewhat medium rare steak ."

  • "Was disappointed with the Dine About Town lunch. Only 2 courses for $18.95. That didn't seem like a special or deal to me. I've been to several Dine About Town meals and they always offered 3 courses (appetizer, entree and dessert) Service was great though. "

  • "The food was good - we ordered the romaine salad for the both of us. I had the sea bass and my companion had the risotto. The salad lacked in that there wasn't much flavor. My fish was delicious. The risotto was delicious. We ordered the blackberry sabayon with the lemon bars on the side as my friend is gluten intolerant. The sabayon was delicious....I could have had a gallon of it. The lemon bars were a little too gummy for my taste. We had a bottle of Freeman pinot noir. You have a wonderful wine selection. The last time we were there, we had a bottle of the Chausseur. After tasting the Chausseur, I tried to find the wine at the store, but was not successful. "

  • "We are always treated like old friends and I really like that. Very hospitable, warm friendly atmosphere that is at the same time sophisticated and elegant. Food is delicious"

  • "Way overpriced, food was so so. Great patio though"
    Dined on 5/30/2014
  • "All the food had been precooked, barely warm and rather tastless. The polenta fries had been cooked way in advance, were oil soaked and hard. The "saboyan" was a couple of teaspoons of egg white...the lemon bars were old, cold and hard. The grilled asparagus were old, cold and limp. I will never go back. VERY expensive for bad, bad food. "

  • "Sociale continues to be one of our favorite restaurants. We love sitting in their outdoor patio when the weather is nice. The food and service are exceptional. I always order the braised duck pappardelle which is outstanding. The simple arugula salad with white bean crsotini is delicious. The restaurant is charming and we can't wait to go back."

  • "This is a great place! Had the seared scallops and fried polenta. Both were to die for. Also the white beam on crostini was absolutely wonderful. My wife and I split the cauliflower risotto. Same result. All dishes were wonderful. Great french bread. Had the Lambrusco with dinner which was perfect. For dessert, we split the bread pudding and had a glass of Brachetto d'acqui recommended by Leslie Sibracco on Checks Please, Bay Area. It is not to be missed. The service was great. Can't say enough about this restaurant. Will definitely be going back. Great neighborhood find in SF. Go there. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "We chose the specials which were pretty good but not excellent. The waiter was great and suggested a wonderful wine to accompany our meals and the hostess was helpful and friendly. I love the little patio and the general feel of this little neighborhood dining spot."

  • "This place is one of our favorites as the frequently change the menu but always keep some of the classics. The parpadelle and gnocchi are always good choices. Service was less attentive than times in the past but probably due to a large party. Also, first time in the newer dining room which is really nice."

  • "We had asparagus lasagna which was fabulous! Fresh past made the difference. The Sea Bass was dry and the accompanying shrimp stuffed artichoke was not good "

  • "Went to Sociale for a nice dinner while visiting San Francisco. The ambience was very nice, we were seated immediately and offered drinks. The waiter was helpful in choosing a wine to fit my tastes, but it went downhill. I ordered the sea bass w/artichokes stuffed with prawns -- it comes out with asparagus, no prawns & NO details from the waiter that it wasn't going to be served as described on the menu. PLUS the sea bass was undercooked in the middle. My boyfriend ordered the gnocchi - it was ok, but lacked a lot of flavor. The waiter NEVER came by after the food was served. Overall take your $$$ and go to dinner somewhere else. They did 1/2 the price of my sea bass & comp a dessert. But that doesn't make up for poor service. "

  • "there is a very special energy about Sociale. Superb food, attentive service...although I wish staff would wait to approach diners who are engaged in an intense chat before telling about the specials. I have visited this restaurant several times and it gets more special in every way each time."

  • "Dined here as a party of 4 - arrived promptly at 6:30 and didn't get out until almost 9. We only had 2 courses. Service was slow (seemed as if few servers for a nearly full restaurant) so it took a long time to order, and a long time to get our check. Also, corkage fee of $30 was surprisingly high. Food was good - portions were generous - and a few items seemed warm (rather than right out of the oven/pan). "

  • "Not great, but okay. Very pricey considering the quality of the food."

  • "Time and time again, our experience at Sociale is both delicious and memorable. We love the variety of specials and appreciate the permanent entrée favorites. "

  • "I have been going to Sociale for years. It is always reliable, always good. Walking down the little alley to the restaurant always feels special, as if I were in a European city. My friends and I like to sit in the outdoor heated patio area; it's pretty and peaceful. "
