  • "With Spring just coming to Ashland, it was a gamble to eat out on the patio, but the sun heated the concrete and we stayed warm after the sun went down. We had some great starters, grilled romaine; macaroni; brussell sprouts - all delicious. Most of us at burgers which were delicious. What could have been better was the service. We were one of the only tables outside, and after some initial care and attention, the server pretty much forgot about us. We were left a bit in the lurch and found ourselves several times looking around for where he was. Overall it was great food and ambience, but the experience needs more care from the wait staff in my opinion."

  • "Had wanted to visit Smithfields since it opened, but since starting a primal diet last Fall (and being content with our own food/wine/beer at home) we never got around to it. We should have come here earlier - everything was perfect. Very good beer and wine selection, as well as a varied whiskey/scotch/rye menu (and good ice). The food was excellent - my husband's brisket was fork tender yet still firm, and my pork belly was to die for. Not a mashed potato fan, but I pretty much cleaned that up too, they were flavorful and worth every diet-cheating mouthful. We will be back soon! Also, the view from the table in the corner behind the bar is pretty darned nice."

  • "Even though this is a meat-centric restaurant we had delicious vegetables so well-prepared. Roasted Brussels Sprouts with sliced Almonds and Apple Butter is one example. Everything we had was delicious. Great T-Shirt purchase too: Bacon The Gateway Meat We ate indoors due to the cold temperature this time of year but they also have outdoor seating for warmer weather."

  • "Smithfields has never disappointed us. The charcuterie is fantastic, fresh ingredients, English fare with a dynamic personal touch. The full bar,whiskey selection and wine list insures you'll always find the perfect pairing.Having said all of that the brunch on Saturday was an almost total disappointment.The crepe contained uncooked almost crunchy pears.The chicken fried steak was passable though deep fried. The mushroom gravy was tasteless and devoid of anything mushroom like. The Smithfield was satisfying though the coffee was oddly burnt. It was as if everything was hastily thrown together after some kitchen mishap. We would have much preferred a few biscuits with preserves to hold us until our meals were prepared correctly."

  • "This restaurant features meat, but we've found that their salads, vegetables, and desserts are outstanding as well. At our recent dinner we had a wonderful salad with watercress, beets, pickled fennel (thinly sliced and delicately pickled) and maybe something else (can't remember the details) with a tasty dressing. Fresh and absolutely delicious. My steelhead was coated with a tapenade and served on a bed of pureed white beans with yellow foot mushrooms and lemon gremolata. The combinations are creative and so very good. For dessert I had a bread pudding topped with pears and a cream caramel sauce. Such a treat. We now always try to eat at Smithfields when we pass through Ashland on our way from Oregon to visit family in California."

They have a great thing going! Downside is the noise level. I would love to bring my dad, but he wouldn't hear a thing due to the ambient sound. Not good for people with hearing sensitivities."

  • "Wonderful "Meatatarian" restaurant in downtown Ashland. One of the best burgers on the west coast -- just be sure to order rare or medium-rare. Rib-eyes and Smoked Brisket are awesome. Popular local spot that can get busy, so occasionally (but not often) service can be spotty. Good wine list and draught handles at the bar feature local wines and ales. Over 50 whiskies on the shelf behind the antique bar. I love the place and highly recommend it."

  • "Smithfields is a really fun place for dinner: the dining room feels very communal without being too noisy - they have clever sound-absorbing boards hanging from the ceiling. The atmosphere may be relaxed but the cooks in the kitchen are no slackers. The New-Year's eve dinner included a very generous velvety crab/fennel bisque. Too bad our cocktails (ascot and mint margi) showed up on the table at the same time as our starting dish. The prime rib was more than generous served with Brussels sprouts, potato/celeri purée I think. The meat was of the highest quality, cooked medium but yet still tender, accompanied with a glass of 2009 Cloudline Pinot Noir. We finished with a delicious crême brûlée and a cognac to wash the whole thing down..."

  • "Fun ambience/energy in the room but found the food overrated. The pork belly wasn't well-trimmed and a soufflé of goat cheese was pretty oily from the accompanying big pieces of roasted beets. Soup was thin and one-dimensional: curried parsnips, couldn't taste the parsnips, just curry. Of course we expected heavier comfort food here--and might return to sit at the bar and have little plates. Comparing Smithfield's to other places, we enjoy Peerless and Playwright, carefully prepared/presented/definitely more bang for the buck, very good food. Server repeated his name and spiel to us twice within the first fifteen seconds, which was weird. "Hello, my name is...and I"ll be taking care of you tonight." Seemed kind of corporate."

  • "The beignets were crispy on the outside and the inside was like a soufflé. They are not doughnut-like, so that's something to note. The burger was incredible - juicy, great cheese, rockin' thick house-smoked bacon, and the fries were at the top of my all-time list. Housemade ketchup tasted like real tomatoes and not sweet like other ketchups. The bun was forgettable, but it did soak up the burger juices and did not get soggy. The service was good and it seems that everyone who works there will swing by and pick up a plate if needed. Our server Teddy was nice and efficient. Generally, I wouldn't say the staff is particularly outgoing or friendly, but they do their jobs so you don't feel you're ignored."

  • "We had a great birthday dinner with another couple. The food and service were excellent. The only negative thing was that we couldn't talk at our table. None of us could hear the other person's comments. The entire restaurant was abuzz with conversations, so much that we just couldn't hear each other at all during dinner. It was rather stressful, and we ended up not ordering dessert for that reason and went some place quieter for dessert. Thank you for the opportunity to put in some constructive critique. I hope this helps with your restaurant operation - otherwise we all loved it!"

  • "Wanted something special before the theater and Smithfields did not disappoint ! The cured meat board starter was lip smacken good and a great accompaniment to the micro beers on tap. We moved onto the evenings specials...house cured bacon fried & green tomatoes, and the bacon wrapped shrimp on polenta..and were very happy !!! Our ending was the bread pudding with poached pears...Just perfect !!!"

  • "If you are looking for a lively, bistro atmosphere, Smithfield's is the place. The top-notch quality of their 'meat-centric' menu and shellfish galore is out-standing. They also have several very enticing vegetarian options. Service is efficient and friendly, but not stuffy or haphazard. The bar is well stocked and knowledgable, wine list diverse and comprehensive. Chances are you will strike up a conversation with the folks sitting next to you; it's that kind of place. Within easy walking distance to the Shakespeare Festival, the staff is well trained in getting play-goers their dinner in a timely but unhurried fashion. We have been there several times, and have always had a great experience, and excellent food."

  • "We stay in Ashland occasionally on the way to visit family in CA. Discovered Smithfields when manager at another hotel recommended it because their restaurant was closed the day we were there. He mentioned that Smithfields features meat but also uses local produce. That attracted us and we loved it. The salads, vegetables, and desserts are imaginative and wonderful, as well as the meat. The restaurant isn't very big and when it's crowded like it was this time (Shakespeare was still on), it is somewhat noisy. In the off-season it's quieter. Service is friendly and attentive. The last three times we've passed through Ashland we've gone to Smithfields. We have been so satisfied, we hesitate to try another restaurant now."

  • "We enjoyed a splendid feast that started with bacon beignet with creme freche, roasted squash soup and goat cheese souffle for starters, followed by a scrumptious steelhead and bacon-wrapped shrimp and grits. Food was awesome. When I asked our waiter for a wine recommendation, it was clear he couldn't distinguish one from another. He response when asked to describe the difference between 2 wines was that one was "dry;" not the response I was looking for. Since the wine list is limited, it would be my expectation that servers can describe the wines fully so guests can make an informed choice."

  • "Ashland has many delightful restaurants and this is definitely one of them. The service is exceptional and the food is tasty and interesting. This can be a meat lover's paradise with panache! Going for a somewhat lighter meal I settled on the goat cheese soufflé ...wow, what a treat! Surrounded by a lovely sauce with roasted beets, crostini and a small butter lettuce salad...it was delightful. All meals at our table were thoroughly enjoyed. The desserts looked wonderful and innovative. Looking forward to a return visit to Smithfields!"

Four of us for dinner tonight. 3 enjoyed the flank steak dinner, cooked to each person's preference, very tasty, ample portion. 1 enjoyed the salmon, a little undercooked to my liking, but still very good. The dessert and wine menu complemented our meal. Our 2nd time at Smithfileds, as enjoyable as the first. Definitely will be back next time through Ashland."
