Diner Reviews
  • "Spring rolls were freshly wrapped, but shrimp and pork were tasteless. BBQ rib sauce was ok but too much of it and ribs were fatty. Husband got catfish clay pot. Nothing but bones and skin, and sauce tasted bottled. Teriyaki chicken was inedible: fatty, boring, like any ol' teriyaki chick anywhere. Can't remember mine-also chicken. I like spice-it was not spicy, or any real interesting flavor at all. I asked for peppers and got raw chopped chilis-also not spicy. How is that possible? Parents got glass noodles and chicken clay pot. Noodles were stuck together, sauce was boring brown. Brown rice:almost tasteless. Oh, $12 bottle beer. $180 for 5, lunch. Why does SD continue to get such great reviews, and why do diners revel in its mediocrity?"

  • "Great food, amazing views, professional service and dynamic buzz. Slanted Door hasn't lost its edge after all these years in the Ferry Terminal. Noise level is a little high but otherwise everything is great."

  • "We had a great table with a view, the service was very attentive, our waiter gave wonderful suggestions. And the food was delicious. A bit noisy, however."

  • "When you eat at the Slanted Door on the Embarcadero with its sleek, upscale design, it's hard to believe that it started out on Valencia Street with literally a slanted door. Fortunately, the food is just as good and in some cases better than it was on Valencia Street. The imperial rolls are the best in the City. The hoisin spare ribs are one of our favorite appetizers. The ribeye is very good, although too much for two people. The chicken claypot is very moist and tender and the Dungeness crab with noodles is also great. The only thing we don't like about the Slanted Door is its wine list, which contains primarily German and Austrian wines. The corkage fee for bringing your own wine is a shocking $35 per bottle, which seems punitive."

  • "Visited while on vacation in SF with my fiancé. The meal was truly great. We had brunch outside, overlooking the bay. My ambiance and noise level comments are specific to outside which was incredibly relaxing. I walked inside the restaurant for a moment and it was very noisy/energetic. Seemed good for groups or friends. We started with shrimp dumplings - recommended by our waiter. These were delicious. I could have ordered these as a meal and been happy. Next we had shrimp with rice noodles followed by the chicken clay pot. The shrimp with rice noodles was good. The clay pot chicken was amazing. Our waiter was also great - attentive but we did not feel rushed. He also made an off the menu cocktail for me which was delicious."

  • "I've been to Slanted Door on several occasions, and I was really looking forward to the meal. I have to say it was a let down. The food was not as vibrant or as delicious as it has been in the past. The truth is that it was a so so meal, which is very disappointing. The waitstaff seemed all were preoccupied with being hipsters rather than efficient. When you have to waive people down for eater it is always frustrating. This was one of my go to spots in San Fran, and now I have to reconsider."

  • "We only had cocktails and bar appetizers because my guests were tired, however, the views are outstanding so we will save another visit to review the food."

  • "This is a great place to share a meal. Reasonably priced for the area and great service. Funny thing though for a Vietnamese restaurant - the waiter did not know what was cafe sua da until I said Vietnamese coffee."

  • "First and foremost the food was great! But that's it's saving grace. The service is more of a "turn and burn" type. Our waitress didn't seemed amused by us. It was noisy but it's just that type of environment. When I say noisy, it's not the music but people talking. The ambience is cafeteria-like but it has a good vibe. The food runners were super nice to us and the gentleman that ran our leftovers to us after we forget it was really sweet. It's definitely not for first date night kind of restaurant, it's for girls night or dinner with friends."

  • "Great place for dinner. We had reviewed the restaurant before we visited SF, it was in a great location and good for people who enjoy good food in great surroundings. If possible ask for a booth with sea views. We were round the corner so not so scenic."

  • "The food was very good. It was the loudest restaurant I have ever dined in."

  • "The price of everything except the shaking beef was not worth the steep price tag. The restaurant was crowded until 10pm. Their cocktails are average, Moscow Mules should be served in a cooper mug. I do not think a cooper mug is too much to ask for. The shaking beef was the only very excellent thing on the menu. Everything else was different but did not taste as good as expected. The price of the meal was not bad when it came to the bill, however, the waiters recommend that you share the Shaking Beef entree, I personally do not think it is worth sharing the portion is not very big. 8oz when cooked appears quite small on the plate. It is the best item on the menu by far. Short ribs tasted funny, chicken clay pot was ok."

  • "We arrived five minutes early for our reservation and were told we would be attended to in five minutes. Twenty minutes later I asked what was happening and was told not long. We finally were shown to a table thirty five minutes late and we're not offered any apology or explanation. I also observed several other people waiting long after their reservation time. The food was superb, but not good enough to warrant the wait."

  • "We received a $100.00 gift card from my sister to try this restaurant; we spent over $100. The food was okay; small portions. We had to wait long for our food to come. Food was not superb just overpriced. Staff was semi-friendly. I think just a lot of hype for this restaurant. The view was nice if you were looking out the window. Locate din the ferry building which is a nice spot to walk around and enjoy the bay views. I did not like the bathroom area. It was coed; not enough privacy to refresh makeup as needed. Staff also used same restroom which felt uncomfortable."

  • "Slanted Door's food is excellent, without exception. Not just the tastes, but each item is cooked to perfection, so the meal is as much a textural treat as delicious. But if you like the people you are there with, limit your group to 4 or fewer, because it is too loud to hear any more than that. Even with four you will all be shouting."

  • "Great atmosphere and the staff was incredibly helpful recommending dishes that allow for a full variety of all their different flavors."

  • "The food was excellent, service a tad slow, however way too noisy. There are no soft furnishings to absorb any sound and the diners are packed in tight. Prices are reasonable for the quality."

  • "This restaurant is SO LOUD we couldnt speak across our table. Accoustics are awful which makes the ambiance so bad its like you are eating alone which is in contrast to their food sharing format."

  • "Excellent food, great service and amazing setting. Very noisy so not the most romantic places to go but totally worth it on all other aspects."

  • "The food was not bad but the service staff, right from the time we walked in to be seated to when we left were barely interested in treating us like guests. The waitress took our order without recommending anything (since most of us in our family are vegetarian) it was almost like our food was dumped on our table for us to eat, and when I tried telling the waitress when she came to collect the check about there being NO mushrooms in the tofu/mushroom dish we ordered she was very dismissive by saying that there was probably 'an accent' of mushrooms!! She or any of the others who came to serve us at our table did not ask once how the food was or how our experience was, which is what we normally experience anywhere else we dine!"

  • "Located in Ferry Building, we were able to grab a counter seat instead of waiting until our set reservation which allowed us to converse with the bartenders and their service attentive. Food portions larger than expected. We ordered 2 appetetizers and 2 entrees one the rib eye, cooked perfectly medium rare. The cellophane noodles with crabmeat was okay, not much crabmeat, overpriced for this dish. The craft drinks delish. Recommend this place but make a reservation weeks earlier."

  • "The service was extremely poor, food slow in coming, unfriendly waitstaff. We were sitting for at least 15 minutes before anyone came. The food was just thrown on the table by random staff, after a long wait. The prices were extremely expensive. We don't mind paying more for a special dinner, as long as there is value."

  • "My boyfriend and I enjoyed dinner at the Slanted Door while vacationing in San Francisco. Our friends who recommended it weren't able to join us at the last minutes and the restaurant was accommodating in taking our smaller party earlier. The daikon rice cakes were amazing; we'd never had anything like that. We also loved the shaking beef."

  • "Went for dinner Friday night. Expected a letdown. Waiter was incredibly helpful in selecting delicious items. Service friendly and attentive. Every starter and entree was excellent. Good wine list. Kind of a zoo but would return."

  • "We arrived on time for our reservation but had to wait at least 10-15 minutes to get seated even though another party that arrived after us got seated first. After being seated at a table that was almost touching the table next to us, we had another 10-15 minute wait for a server and water. The food was good but not great: the short ribs were tender but lacked flavor and the pork was overdone. Soup, spring rolls, and shrimp were good. We had empty water glasses throughout the night and did not see our server after getting our meal--we flagged down other wait staff when we were ready for the bill. Given the great reputation that this place has, we were gravely disappointed in the poor service and the mixed quality of the food."

  • "Great food, stunning views. Bad service. A but loud (a table of 6 was ok for a conversation) and felt a bit like a tourist attraction."

  • "Slanted door is now a San Francisco Institution, great food, very attentive staff, a terrific Ferry Building space. Only downside is the volume of the hubbub - don't miss it!"

  • "Sub-par experience on Friday, August 8th. Service was slow at times and the wine - $15 glass of pinot noir - seemed watered down. They were out of Jasmine rice. The food was good, though portions were small. The bill was too high considering our overall experience."

  • "We made reservations on the advise of a friend and on an article read on the web. Must husband is not very adventurous when it comes to food and was hesitant. The wait staff was incredibly helpful and we made some great choices as to dishes. It was probably our favourite meal the entire San Fran trip. We would highly recommend this restaurant!!!"

  • "Haven't eaten here in years, but wanted to bring the kids (10, 13). Very good food with simple, delicious flavors. We all enjoyed the meal of rib eye, clay pot chicken and squid. Shared two appetizers as well. Plenty of food for our family, but maybe not if you have big eaters. Food was solid and good, but will not likely make it a priority to come back."

  • "Been a fan of the Slanted Door since it's humble neighborhood beginnings on Valencia Street. The Ferry Building location has made it a mecca for tourists, so it can be difficult to get a reservation. The food is top drawer so it's worth the hassle. Dishes are perfect for sharing."

  • "We had a reservation for 6pm, as that was all that was available. We were seated on time. At about 7pm we were told that we needed to be finished by 7:30 because they needed the table. I have never been to a restaurant where they told us we only had an hour and a half to eat. We ordered plenty of food and drinks so it's not like we were taking up space."

  • "It was a beautiful afternoon in San Francisco and we were able to sit outside and enjoy the view and people. The waiter who has been their 11 years was outstanding and assisted in picking out the wine and entrees and the order the courses should be eaten. The food was absolutely amazing. Definitely will return the next time we're in San Francisco."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for our 3 month anniversary and all she could say was that she felt like she was on Cloud Nine! The staff was well-trained and knowledgeable. After grabbing drinks at the bar, our host grabbed a tray and took both of our wine glasses as he escorted us to our seats before our reservation time. We ordered the Vegetarian Spring rolls as an appetizer, which were delicious, while my girlfriend ordered the Organic Chicken Claypot and I opted for the Grass-Fed Estancia Shaking Beef for dinner. Both dishes were spectacular, with amazing flavor penetrating both meats! The ambiance was incredible, as we simply took in the beauty of the Bay Lights at night. The noise level was rather loud, but it's expected at a popular spot."
