Diner Reviews
  • "Skates is a beautiful spot by the bay. The restaurant itself is older, not remarkable in looks, But the backdrop if the bay, and good seafood, makes a nice dining experience."

  • "Skates is truly special for the view and the outstanding food. We had a very special meal before our concert!"

  • "My waitress was excellent despite large party and changes to reservation size. The black lady receptionist was rude by making sly remarks but i didnt point it out ti ruin my mood."

  • "This is not my first time dining at Skates, this is my first review. You cannot go wrong having a meal or drinks at Skates. My Brunch choice was the Crabcake Benedict......Delicious! My cousin ordered the Seafood Quiche which she said was good bust not as good as the Crabcake Benedict which I shared with her.She also ordered the Bloody Mary bar which offered plenty of garnishes (bacon was cold like out of the refrigerator cold) lots of Hot sauces to choose from. I had the Pomegranate Mimosa which was really really good. Our server was very attentive, polite and courteous. Will be bake. I would recommend making reservations through Open Table very gas and easy."

  • "Food was mediocre, choices limited and prices outrageous ($20 for a crab cake?), but I must say they have the best French fries. I would suggest eating a snack at the bar and taking in the panoramic view."

  • "Fabulous view of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, etc. Lots of free parking. Very good food and excellent service."

  • "I take my family to skates on special occasions. Our brunch on Sunday 4/6, was for my birthday. Skates, no longer serve the freshly made cinnamon bread (replaced by sushi bar). My wife & sons food was burnt to the taste. The food was replaced, but we were not served at the same time, therefore, I finished my meal first."
    Dined on 4/6/2014
  • "The overall experience was good. The reservation process was easy. The food was tasty. The only thing I would like to see different is the menu. The menu lacked options. For this reason I would likely consider other restaurants first."

  • "skates has a varied brunch menu which was tasty but poorly presented and my breakfast potatoes were over cooked.. but the staff was warm and friendly also our waitress nancy was attentive and knew the menu very well."

  • "Want to impress? A spectacularly sunny day by the Bay, good food, great views, great service. A chance to show off."

  • "If you like views, Skates is the place to go but don't expect the food to be memorable. We took our elderly friend and her daughter to brunch to celebrate her 96th birthday, and we were seated by the window which had great views of the bay, bridges, boats, etc. I ordered the seafood quiche which came with a small side salad and cubed potatoes. The quiche was OK but the crust was dry and not worth eating. The salad was wilted, and the potatoes were barely warm and tasted like they had been made a long time before they were served. Overall, the food just didn't taste fresh. The waiter did bring the birthday girl a complimentary dessert which consisted of a small creme brule with a blob of whipped cream on the side with a candle in it."

  • "Seven of us get together to celebrate each other and our birthdays. We meet 7 times per year at a different restaurant each time. Skates ranks right at the top of the places we have eaten."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "We prefer the lunch menu. Loved the sunset, but it can be too bright at the window. We'll be back for lunch and that great Louie salad. Best chowder, too."

  • "Excellent Mahi Mahi and Salmon. Wonderful Sunset view."

  • "Love coming here for a great daytime view of the bay, sailboars, pier fishing. And best of all a view of San Francisco."

  • "Everything about our meal at Skates was outstanding. I made the reservation on the Open Table App on my Iphone just a few hours beforehand. We were seated right away at a beautiful table at the window and watched the breathtaking sunset over the bay and the SF skyline. Our server, Vicki, was wonderful! She was helpful, friendly, funny and attentive. I would be tempted to go back to Skates just to hang out with her! The food was fantastic, the wine Vicki helped me choose was terrific. Vicki helped my date create a meal that wasn't actually on the menu but that she thought the chef would agree to prepare. It turned out perfectly. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely return."

  • "I have eaten at Skates several times -- even though I am not from California. Every time we have truly enjoyed it. So, being at UC Berkeley for a meeting, I took several colleagues there for dinner. It was disappointing from the moment we walked in. Two people standing behind the desk were too involved in phone calls and we must have waited close to 10 minutes to be taken to our table. The food was disappointing although our selection was one of the features of the evening. The only memorable part of the evening was the spectacular view of the San Francisco Bay!"

  • "as always we had a great experience. The service is outstanding and we can't rave enough about it. We had the clams in the broth app and clam chowder, very good. The new halibut dish (with Israeli couscous) was a bit dry and there was something spicy (maybe the garnish) that was too much for me (I'm very sensitive to spicy food), but my husband didn't think so. We finished with the new butterscotch pudding, divine!"

  • "Our server was very friendly. She ensured everything with our meal was perfect. She also helped to ensure my guest was surprised for her birthday."

  • "The servers were very attentive, particularly Danny who I believe was in-training. We are generally not big seafood eaters, but found the seafood (which is a staple here) to be exceptional. The views and ambience added up to make it a lovely and festive evening for my family. This is definitely one of our family's favorite spots to dine in the East Bay."

  • "A disappointing experience at a favorite place. My friend and I waited 15 minutes once seated before being approached by our waiter. We were uncomfortably cold because of the air con. My mango mojito tasted like it was loaded with nutrisweet. I got charged for a salad that never arrived and the ribeye i ordered medium was well done, dried out and 1/3 as thick as a ribeye should be. It was more like a dried out flatiron steak. I felt like Skates is cutting costs by skimping. Shrimp were cold. No one checked in during our meal. A high price for a sad experience."

  • "We have enjoyed Skates on the Bay for last 5 years for Thanksgiving and other special occasions. The scenic view and the service are excellent. You are never rushed. We often spend 2+ hours enjoying our meal! Two of our group of four had the prime rib, one the special fish of the day, and one the mussels -- all were very very good."

  • "The title says it all. You go here for the wonderful view of the bay, the bridges, and the San Francisco skyline. The food and service alone inferior to similarly priced restaurants. I had requested a window table when I booked the reservation. When we were being seated, I inquired about my window table request. The maître d curtly replied "nothing is ever guaranteed". I understood that but there was no attempt at all to get us a window table or offer for us to wait for one. Service is slow, we had to look for our server, hardly checked on us, picked up empty drink glasses without asking if we wanted another one, staff seemed snobbish."

  • "We were two couples who live on different sides of the bay and met at Skates to celebrate our husbands birthdays. it was a great evening and we found skates very accommodating. Food was great and service attentive. We got a window table, as requested, with a great sunset view. And our husbands received a birthday dessert . Our friends had not been here before and really enjoyed it."

  • "We had a lovely early dinner at Skates on a Friday evening. All of the staff were extremely welcoming. Our server was excellent, attentive and helpful. I ordered the filet medallions with béarnaise sauce (one of my favorites). The meat was tender and delicious and cooked as I had requested. The weather cooperated so that the bay view could be appreciated. We had a leisurely and relaxing meal."

  • "The menu at Skates was extensive and had many options. We chose a sirloin plate and a scallop plate and both were delicious. Next time, we'll eat here when it's light outside so we can enjoy the views of The City!"

  • "I used to come here years ago..I was excited to return and brought 3 friends with me. Everything great I remember about this place is gone..they used to have fresh baked foccacia they no longer offer it..My friends fish and chips was too salty and he had to peel the breading off, inside the fish was hard and dry. My husbands king salmon was overcooked. I gave our server my Restaurants Unlimited Rewards card and she did not add the points to my account. For the prices we paid ,we expected a better experience from this place..Overall the only good thing I can say about this establishment is that the views of the ocean and the restaurant are very nice. Other than that I will not be returning here."

  • "A little pricey but worth it. The setting on the water is splendid and the view of the city, bay, and Golden Gate Bridge is magnificent as well as peaceful."
    Dined on 3/20/2014
  • "The food was actually, a bit rough. I found the flavors far from subtle. I think what was affectionately called "succotash" was actually frozen mixed vegetables."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "Lots of variety on the menu and I have never been disappointed with the food. My favorite is the open face crab sandwich; done to PERFECTION! Who could complain about a view of the Bay as they dine in such a lovely setting?"
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "Bloody Mary bar is fantastic! Seafood quiche is d'lish. The seafood on the Louie salad was very good. The potatoes with the quiche are just ok, as is the bread served for the table. The view is fantastic! The service was excellent. I willbe back."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "We always return to Skates for its fabulous view of the Bay. However, their food does not match the view. I had a so--called seafood quiche which was mostly dough and cheese. It was to come with fresh fruit, which turned out to be fried potatoes. Skates definitely needs to look for a new chef."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "Food was ok. Service a bit slow. We sat for a good 15 minutes before anyone even came to our table. More to say, no space here."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "Made a reservation in advance on Open Table requesting window table and indicated Birthday celebration. Were not seated at a window table and had to debate with the hostess to be relocated - we had even called that day to reiterate our request. She told us next time indicate "you dine here often" if you want a window table. Understaffed - our server openly told diners that this was the reason for slow service and forgetfulness. Sturgeon had to be sent back because it was undercooked. Chef was gracious when we brought a fresh serving out. Overall food is very good but the slow service and having to repeat requests like glasses for the bottle of sparkling water and a cracker to crack the crab got a bit ridiculous."
