Diner Reviews
  • "We went to SEI on Friday night and had a wonderful experience. The creative twists on sushi and surprising flavor combinations were delicious and fun! Our server was attentive and excellent with menu suggestions. It was a fantastic date night!"

  • "The attraction is the sushi bar/kitchen. The service is attentive, but sometimes slow when they have too many guests. On the plus side there's usually someone watching who will step in if needed. Layout and decor are pleasing. Greeting and seating is consistently welcoming and quick with reservation. Sake here is top shelf and recommended, though expensive. Overall they're doing it right - we've dined here 3 times this year because the experience is fun and the food is fantastic."

  • "Booked this restaurant through OpenTable on Wednesday April 9th and had a very satisfying experience. The food was fresh, nicely prepared and full of flavor. Although this is more a sushi restaurant, we also ordered a few meat dishes which were cooked to perfection. I would recommend the triple tuna specialty roll, the fried crab with pineapple hand-roll, the crab legs & lamb chops. If you are very hungry, I would not go for the nigiri as those portions are small. Dishes above should serve you enough to eat for a party of 2. Range from $10-15 per plate."

  • "Great food whether you want sushi or not. Juicy lamb sliders or crispy salmon are recommended."

  • "The decor was outstanding.. but food was just ok. I understand thought that good sushi is hard to get in DC. The restaurant was perfect for a business lunch - quiet and classy. I loved the decor. Though it was peak lunch time there were only about 5 tables occupied.. somehow though the waiter still managed to forget the salad i ordered."

  • "I took my boyfriend here for the 2nd time. I have to honestly say that this visit was all the more pleasing than the 1st visit. The food was delicious! :)"

  • "My boyfriend and I love to eat at SEI. It can get VERY noisy in there - even in the dining room - but the food makes up for any problems with the noise. All the rolls are really interesting as are the small plates. We've been there about 8 times and still find ourselves trying new things."

  • "If fresh, creative, attractive and tasty Asian food is your thing, then dine at SEI. We had a meal of smaller dishes and a fresh sushi roll, all of which were very good and gave us plenty to eat. We had dishes featuring Salmon, tofu, scallops, calamari, and spinach (sorry, I had a craving), all of which we really enjoyed. Service was efficient, but we did not feel rushed. As the place fills up, it does get quite loud, given the low ceilings and wood floors, so be prepared for that if it very busy. Add it to your rotating list of Penn quarter restaurants."

  • "No matter what you try on the menu you will not be disappointed everything is prepared to perfection. I tried the fish and chips sushi roll for the first time adn now I'm hooked will have it everytime! You have a craving for great sushi this is the place!"

  • "SEI took the Kobe burger with tempura bacon off of their menu, and replaced it with Kobe sliders. My husband, who is a burger fanatic, ranked the SEI Kobe burger in his top 2 burgers in DC. Yet they took the burger off the menu. The sliders don't come close. BRING BACK THE KOBE BURGER. Please."

  • "SEI has an eclectic menu of Japanese, Korean, Asian fusion. The menu is very creative. We had the Fish & Chips roll (outstanding!), Sizzling Scallops (delicious), Salmon Aburi (VERY tasty)', curry short ribs, brussel sprouts. The Salmon & Fish & Chip roll were the definite stand outs. Service was excellent with good menu recommendations. Easy metro access from Gallery Place (parking can be a challenge)"

  • "A friend and I decided to pick a new restaurant, as we do every so often. I must say---we made a good choice!!! The ambiance and decor was nice and cozy....the service was excellent and the staff was very professional!! Our waitress even made suggestions for us to try and we were never disappointed!! This is a good spot for girl's nite out or a romantic evening with your partner. Great for group gatherings as well! Highly recommended. Its a secret charm to 7th St."

  • "SEI, one of three owned by the same family (SEI, OYA, and SAX), is an amazing restaurant. Service was superb, food was incredible, and prices are fair. We had a superb meal, everything we tried was delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "This was the first time I have been openly rushed from a table. Our reservation was for 6pm and the manager took our napkins at 810pm. The food was Ok and manager tanked the whole experience"

  • "Dined alone at SEI and wanted to share my find. Located in a vibrant part of DC near Chinatown, SEI was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Extremely friendly and welcoming with excellent service and decor, the food is the real star here. Heavily northern Pacific influenced (Japanese and Korean) the chef produces a variety of interesting dishes, often from more mundane ingredients. I had the short rib with a side of yams done with a wonderful sauce. Both excellent. Wine list is well chosen, although a bit pricey, and they make some very interesting cocktails. A must visit if you love Asian influenced food."

  • "This is a favorite of mine..consistently good sushi and very good service. The "chip" and Wasabi guacomole are fantastic..great flavor..the chips are fried wontons ..crispy and delicious. The "fish and chip"s sushi roll is a must..sounds odd, tastes great!....followed closely by the salmon cilantro roll and crispy shrimp. Love SEI.. The trade assn that represents my company has held parties here too and they make sure the food is plentiful, creatively displayed and served, and the highest quality."

  • "Went here to celebrate our anniversary and brought along our 15 year old son. We were all very happy with the food and the waitress was terrific. Great recommendations and attentiveness. We went on a Sunday night so it wasn't crowded. I'd like to try it again on a Saturday night as I expect it must have a great vibe."

  • "i went for lunch this time, and also once before. Very good value. Delicious food. I can't rate the noise level, because at lunch, it wasn't full, and was fairly sedate. I have also been for the happy hour which goes until 8 p.m. great for pre-theater. few small plates discounted, as well as beer, wine, and a couple of cocktails. Be advised that this is understandably very popular, and was quite busy. the restaurant seemed full and vibrant that evening, but i haven't eaten there at night."

  • "We had a great meal at SEI. Unique sushi rolls, including fish and chips and triple spicy tuna roll, were some highlights. I also enjoyed the scallops and Chilean sea bass dishes. We also liked that our waitress did not tell us to over order the number of dishes - basically 2 per person. We ended up ordering 11 dishes for 4 of us and that was more than plenty of food! Energetic atmosphere and beautiful clean decor. Will definitely go back for a fun night out."

  • "We had a mixture of small plates and a bit of sushi. The brussels sprouts were outstanding, the sweet potatoes and seaweed salad very good, as were the salmon and the spicy hamachi rolls. The pork buns are "deconstructed--like a taco made out of steamed dough with pork belly filling. Very good although not better than pork buns I've had elsewhere, and the dough was a little dry. Service was excellent. Good wine list. Had a great time and would definitely go back. Would think seriously about the bar menu, too."

  • "For those venturing into the Capital City looking to get their sushi on may want to give this haute decor destination a pass. Seating is crowded and haphazardly arranged. It is run like a young couple all dressed up with no place to go. The menu menu is misleading and presents the aire of value, when in fact the portions are undersized. Fans of hot sake will be both disappointed in sticker shock. Coming from Los Angeles where the sushi landscape is both vibrant and competitive, I can safely report this spot would not make the top 100 on its best day. My best advice. . . Take a pass, this close to Chinatown, find Chinese."

  • "This restaurant came very highly recommended, and I now know why! The food was great, the atmosphere was excellent and I had a great time. It was a girls night out and this restaurant got the night started right! We loved the sushi and drinks! Can't wait to do it again!"

  • "Delicious food, great service, fantastic cocktails, reasonably priced for DC. Liquid Wasabi cocktail is well balanced...a little sweet, followed by a nice habanero ginger zing. Aburi dishes are something I've never had before....basically slightly torched sashimi....sooo good. Alligator Ribs are a must order. Everything we had was excellent in it's own way: Tuna Serrano, Fish and Chips roll, Toro Aburi, Horate Aburi, Salmon Aburi, Akami Nagiri, Kobe Beef Roll, Triple Tuna Roll, Alligator Ribs, and King Crab. Lily's service was friendly, knowlegeable, unobtrusive and sincere. Chuong, the manager, had great recommendations. If you want to have a great meal for two (or maybe three, we were hungry!), order the above!"

  • "I really like the food and visual atmosphere. But the noise level is nearly unbearable. Even at a small table for two, it is difficult to have any level of conversation while eating. I really hope SEI finds a way to baffle the noise; otherwise this place is a homerun."

  • "This place is the best gem in D.C. If you like sushi, you'll absolutely love SEI! I've been to the restaurant weekly for the last year or so. It is rare that I'm not there every week and sometimes twice a week. Give it a try. You won't regret it!!"

  • "Just a fantastic experience all around. We were immediately seated and all the servers were very prompt and accommodating. Or assigned server made us feel really relaxed and took the time to answer all our questions and provide us with numerous suggestions. This is a perfect place for a romantic dinner. We first ordered the California Roll and Crispy Shrimp. Next, we ordered Lobster Roll and Fish and Chips roll and, again, shared the tray between us. The Fish and Chips roll was suggested by our server and turned out to be our favorite with the right amount of flavor and hint of crispiness. We also ordered the Kobe Sliders, which were cooked perfectly. Their specialty drinks were very well mixed and tasted great! I highly recommend!"

  • "We had a great waiter (José) who gave us recommendations on what to order. The food was very good, especially the Sea Bass Sliders and the orange bread pudding. I love the decor, though the tables are close together. Depending on the people at the tables around you it can get rather loud, but it didn't bother us."

  • "We were here using a living social voucher and were thus able to try a lot of new things we may not have tried otherwise. We loved everything from our drinks to our dessert and were not disappointed. We will definitely return with friends. The location is great too, very easy to find."

  • "We went for their prix fixe menu on Valentine's Day. Our waitress, Solo, was OUTSTANDING in her explanations & sales, though sometimes she forgot about us (took a very long time to order the courses after ordering drinks). This didn't detract too much from the experience, though. Their sashimi was very fresh & presented beautifully. The short rib melted in the mouth. We'd like to go back when we can order off the regular menu to compare."

  • "5-6 of us went here for the first time last fall and liked it -- good cocktails and some interesting small plates. However while we liked it, afterwards we realized that the price for what you get is OK -- another DC place where the flash is more than the substance. That assessment was confirmed on this most recent visit. I got a sea bass dish that just did not have a good flavor and an off-putting texture. Our waiter, while OK, just had a diva attitude. And the cocktails, while decent, are way overpriced. If you're way into sushi and eating with club music in the background, maybe you'll find it more to your liking."

  • "I didn't like the fact that they added the 20% "service charge" onto the bill, didn't tell us that they did that, and still had a tip section on the bill. Bad business. Food was excellent however. No reason to be shady like that with the tip."
