Scratch features American cookery in an elegant setting. The cuisine is based on the premise of simple food done well and draws from American classics reflecting today's influences and bounty of ingredients. Choose from a tender moist braised short rib, rotisserie chicken, or perhaps a selection from our fresh seafood and oyster bar.

For beverages Scratch has researched some of the finest vineyards and distilleries in the United States. We have a wide variety of wines and spirits to choose from in all price ranges. Some of our wine and spirits are highly allocated and will not always be available.

Scratch also offers a vegetarian menu.

  • "Sorry, didn't pass my bar for a fine dining establishment. We started with the seafood plateau and the lobster was chewy and rough and oysters were just so so. The shrimp and cocktail sauce were nice. We tried the chorizo stuffed dates next and there was not much contrast so the date was mushy. The flavor was nice but it really needed some texture contrast like "crispy" bacon, yes the bacon was not crispy either. My wife ordered the crabcake and we didn't even finish it. It was mush again with not a lot of flavor and slightly "fishy"...........Yes, I am eating a seafood but I do make them and know the difference between crab tasting fishy. :)"

  • "It wasn't clear from their website nor the OpenTable info the restaurant does a transition from brunch menu to dinner menu, and only offer the limited items from the bar menu. I met up with a friend at 2:30 and we ordered the bacon wrap date, the Scratch Pizza, and Elvis for desert. The date appetizer taste fine but I would expect more food for the money. The pizza...the pizza. Never mind about the pizza. For their Elvis (their most popular desert), I find the chocolate cup doesn't taste like chocolate at all. We were served by numerous staff (transition again?) and they were all very friendly and attentive. I would go back if I needed a quite place for confidential conversation. Not my top choice when seeking for good food."

  • "I chose this restaurant for our South Bay book club to meet at, and it turned out to be perfect. When I entered the restaurant, I was informed that I was the first of my party to arrive, but they offered to seat me anyway, so I could wait for other members of the book club. The hostess and server both talked to me about the book my club was reading, and were more than friendly. The food was amazing; it wasn't too loud, so we could still hear each other to hold a conversation about the book. The prices were reasonable and every staff member I encountered was amazing. I will definitely be coming here again."

  • "I ate at Scratch a couple years ago and had a wonderful meal. I ordered the same thing the other evening (Scratch Fried Chicken) and it was greasy and rather flavorless. Service was excellent, ambiance was nice, but for the prices they charge, the food needs to be a LOT better."

  • "We were extremely happy with our experience at Scratch. Starting with cocktails (we are fussy), the bartender was friendly, attentive, asked about our preferences, made good suggestions, and made good drinks the way we like them. Once we were seated for dinner, we found the same level of good attentive service there. You have to try the onion rings! They are wonderful We split the rings and a dinner salad (also very good -- lots of different lettuces, color and textures). For main courses, my husband had the short ribs, which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the scallops which were just right; they were cooked enough to be done, but not tough. That's not easy to do. We were too full for dessert, but they looked good. Next time..."

  • "Upon entering Scratch, you are greeted by a bar scene that is so lively and noisy that you know you're not in for a quiet evening. If you can get past that, you'll have a good meal. This is American comfort style food with enormous portions, so you need to order carefully if you don't want to waddle out of the restaurant. Fun cocktail list, interesting wine list. The short ribs on polenta are to die for. Save room for the desserts! Service is pleasant; most importantly, our lost credit card was found and stored in the safe until we retrieved it!"

  • "A disappointment for romantic or special occasions as it was very loud and conversation was difficult. Design is all hard surfaces so there is little to mitigate noise from loud bar patrons or large groups. Calling the noise level 'energetic' is a poor choice alternative for very loud. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Unique flavor combinations such as the bacon jam combined with scallops, the creamed spinach and leaks, or the Caesar salad with bits of avocado, tomatoes and green beans. Dessert choices amazing. We found food portions sizes and prices commiserate with other restaurants of similar style. Sans the noise issue, I would highly recommend and will likely return, perhaps at a different time."

I asked for a vegetarian menu on the special requests section and was delighted that the restaurant took note of it and had a menu ready to go for our group. We arrived and were promptly seated. The food was fabulous! This is the first time I've ever cleaned my plate and ate everything on it! My hats off to Scratch and their fabulous chefs and waiters who made our luncheon experience a success!! Thanks!"

  • "Our server flubbed the sitdown, apparently not realizing we had just been seated (literally seconds before her approach). Then seemingly surprised we weren't ready to order, and pressuring us to choose something, then seemingly affronted we wanted time to look at the menu. From then on our table was mostly neglected, other than by the water guy, who was really on top of our water glasses. Job well done by that guy. The food was good but not great, and not 'top 10 on the peninsula' (list which motivated my choice of this restaurant). My lamb was seriously over-seared on the outside (pretty charry in overall taste), and a bit well done (a tiny bit of pink) IMO for my order of 'medium'. All in all, just not what I expected for the price."

  • "I took my husband, daughter and nephew to Scratch for Father's Day. The restaurant was very nice inside and our server was very pleasant and efficient. My entree was delicious, as was my nephew's, while my husband's was ok. My daughter told me that if she was blindfolded and had the entree she did, she would've guessed it came from McDonald's (she had ribs and they were covered in a lot of sauce - maybe the lesson is that if you want ribs, you should go to a rib joint). Aside from the entrees, we had desserts and appetizers. The desserts were fine, but the mussels we ordered for an appetizer were not great. The sauce was delicious but a few of the mussels did not taste very fresh."

  • "We came for an early Fathers Day lunch and even had 3 kids and a baby with us. The staff was very accommodating and kind, even with the kids. I was a little weary about what others would think with us having the kids but they were very well behaved and there was really no issues. The food was amazing and so were the drinks! I highly recommend the margarita with the jalapeno."

I wanted something (out of our neighborhood) that was a bit more nice & special (ambiance, culinary variety) for a BDAY dinner for my wife. I too a chance based on Yelp! (don't always believe) and their web site. We were pleased. We didn't break the bank even with a drink, appetizer, salads and entrees. Very good service! "

  • "We came when the restaurant was pretty empty around 445pm on a Sunday. We did get the appetizers fairly quickly ~ 10 mins but from the time we ordered to get our main dish was about 1 hour. We were being waited on by the bartender even though we had a big party and were seated at tables away from the bar area. We've been to scratch several times before and have to say this was the worst service we had. Anyway, the food was excellent once we received. it."

  • "The prior reviews are about right. We were looking for a new place to try. The room is nice, and in our case the service was excellent. The food was erratic. Among the three entrees, the food all tasted good but the food on two plates was cool while the third was too hot to eat. We will try it again, but prior reviews suggesting that the food is inconsistent was our experience as well."

  • "The ambience is good but the food was disappointing. I ordered short pork ribs. The meat was tender and tasty but there was a lot of fat on the ribs. The sweet potato frence fries were hard and undercooked. Not good and they didn't look freshly cooked even though I understood the name of the restaurant meant that everything is made from scratch. They looked wrinkled."

The menu has so many great choices that I wanted to try so we will definitely be back. Our waiter was very attentive but not intrusive. A nice upscale addition to the Castro St restaurant scene."

  • "My friends and I are big foodies, and I was looking for someplace special to take a larger group of 7 after a concert I played in. This place fit the bill. Amazing bourbon list, tasty cocktails and fantastic food. (sorry Scotch fans, none available but the bourbon list had a large variety). The service was pretty good, although it was an early Sunday dinner so it wasn't full. They were a little slow on one drink (I wasn't even sad, just had to remind them) and they put it on the house without any complaints from me. Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys good food."

  • "We enjoyed our first time here. Scratch easily accommodated a party of six, seating us in a nice booth where we could easily talk. The menu had a wide selection for everyone. 3 had fish (halibut, salmon) and 3 had meat (short rib, lamb, beef fillet) and everyone enjoyed their meal. The raw seafood bar was great for those who liked fresh oysters also. The waitress recommended a nice Quivera Sauvignon Blanc that went great with everyone's meal. I would go back to Scratch again!"

  • "Most of the food we tried was very tasty, the presentation was superb and the service was very good. Some of the entrees were SO small that my husband came home hungry, and he's just an average portion sized eater. There are a few interesting side items that come with the entrees, but just a taste really and nothing substantial. I might also note that the salmon was not cooked thoroughly. They serve two kinds of bread that were delicious, but would be nice if warmed up first. Overall a very nice place to eat, but for some of the dishes they need to add more food on the plates for the price. "

  • "It's got good menus, but they don't change and feel pretty boring after your first visit. If you ask for hot sauce, they'll bring you the sting of Tabasco vinegar (not a strong showing for a California establishment). I had big problems with their service my last two visits; felt like it was their first time waiting tables. We asked the chef for their recommendation for the best dish with no dairy (to accommodate an allergy) and what we received was the lamest plate of steamed vegetables possible; no effort whatsoever. It looks good on paper, but you'll walk away disappointed."

The food wasn't great, lacked flavor, and while the restaurant was far from packed, we didn't see our waiter all that often. We will not be back. I did think it was funny the one person happy with her food ordered the chicken. Everyone else had steaks, fancy sandwiches, but it was the one roasted chicken that was the winner."
