  • "A wonderful evening spent on the water. However the restaurat is not clearly signed from the street. Had to ask a porter of the Plaza hotel where it was only to discover its part of it. Food great except they had run out of lobster by 8pm and so we couldn"t have the proper surf and turf. However all this was forgotten when we spotted a sea otter in the water right by the restaurant. My boys were given binoculars to look out and we had a table by the water - definately recommended. An unforgettable evening."

  • "The first time I enjoyed Schooners was on my honeymoon (Oct 2011) and it was pure bliss. The food was amazing the service was top notch and the view was to die for. Since then I have returned with my husband twice more. Once being May of this year (same outstanding experience) and then most recently this past week in July. This visit we were greeted with the same superior service staff but the food fell flat. I am not sure if it was just an off night for the kitchen but having made a 2 hour drive just to dine here to have such a disappointing meal was upsetting to say the least. We will give Schooners another chance as the sea bass Blt is out of this world, however I have some concern over the drastic change of quality in two short months."

  • "I love this restaurant. We have eaten here at dinner 5 times and is consistently good. The breakfast is the hidden gem. We normally do not eat breakfast but it came with the room at the Monterey Plaza (one of our favorite hotels anywhere). Go early and you have the place and views to yourself along with a finely prepared traditional breakfast."

  • "Overall I did not have a negative experience at Schooners. The food was good and the seafood was fresh. I would highly recommend the stuffed lobster and filet. The restaurant doubles as the hotel bar so you get a bit of loud vacationer in the background but nothing too annoying. Our waitress wasn't bad or negative, just seemed to be having an off day (hey it happens to the best of us). To be fair, I have eaten here twice and the first time was great, clearly since I booked there again. I have a hard time dinging a place for a staff member who wasn't unfriendly or negative, but as you would normally be eating here on a special occasion or while on vacation anything less than ideal can feel amplified."

  • "I had reserved our party at least a month beforehand, and upon arriving at the restaurant, I found both the dining room AND the outside patio to be full and reserved. Our party started out at 4 people, then doubled to 8, so it was a large party. Our reservations were for 5:30, we arrived at 5pm only to be told the inside dining area was totally reserved, as was the patio! Previously, I had been told I could have my choice of seating, depending on the weather, either inside or out. I thought that was great. Upon arriving, I was told we should not have been offered both options and both areas were booked. Therefore, we were seated at 2 circular tables for 8 people on the deck, making talking very difficult and separating our parties."

  • "I came with my family for breakfast and dinner and enjoyed both very much. Breakfast was great loved the fruit bowls and fruit drinks. Dinner was good alil noisy not overwhelming though. If ordering a steak when asked how you want it cooked clarify with the waiter what style is what because I my father thought medium was cooked with alil pink but it turned out there was way more pink. I got well done and it turned out great. Portions are amazing by the way! And sides are good. Definitely have great steaks, fish, I and pasta."

  • "We had a waiter that was very overzealous. I understand the up-sell but, he wouldn't take no for an answer. When we didn't order a cocktail it was obvious that he was disinterested with our table. We placed our order and then didn't see him for quite some time. The food was great! We did not order a bottled water and when my husbands "regular" water was empty he asked if he would like more water and he brought a Calistoga (?) bottle... That we never ordered in the first place and then charged us for it.... We saw it but at this point we decided to just pay for the bottle and move on.... He kept trying to sell us desert we said no several times and he still kept insisting .... It got really annoying!"

  • "I was excited to try Schooners as it was very highly rated on TripAdvisor and the restaurant looked beautiful. However, the food was mediocre. For appetizers I had clam chowder which was very watery. So if you like watery less stew based clam chowder might be the one for you. The swordfish, recommended by our hotel staff wasn't at all good. The food isnt terrible but for the price it did not match my expectations. I have to say that what was worse was the service but service in America isn't great in general so that could be it. I don't think I would be returning to schooners next time I visit Monterrey. Beautiful scenary but does get super cold so be aware and ask for blankets."

  • "Schooners was our restaurant of choice on the last night of a trip we made with three visiting relatives from back east. It did not disappoint. The ambiance of the restaurant is a bit casual but the food was exceptional, the cocktails excellent. We were graciously seated at a window even though we were a party of five. The service was wonderful...a great final night of our trip! We were guests at the hotel so following dinner we went out and sat by the fire feature, also a very special time."

  • "My husband and I had their summer salmon special that was a three course meal with wine pairing if you choose. We did. This was our first time eating in the dining room - we usually choose the bar area. The view of the Bay was magnificent complete with a large telescope for closer viewing of otters, etc. First course, pasta in a delectable well-seasoned sauce with smoked salmon and asparagus: excellent! Main course, grilled salmon with corn relish and thinly sliced radish, surprisingly superb. The meal was finished with a lemon almond cake topped with strawberries, cream and balsamic. Yum! The wine pairings were well chosen with each course, ending in a late harvest Sauvignon Blanc. The service was impeccable."

The menu was quite extensive so we had little difficulty in making enjoyable choices. Food, service and ambience were in the very good to outstanding categories.   • "If you are foodie, and I am being from the Bay Area, you are going to enjoy Schooners. Although it is basic seafood and American dishes, the preparation and food quality was excellent. We ordered the flamed peppers for an appetizer and they were most excellent. New York Strip, Pasta, Cioppino had great taste without excessive seasoning. Service was great, I did not give it 5 stars only because it was pretty noisy when the restaurant was full (which was Saturday night). Can't beat the view, I applaud the chef and wait staff for being on top of their game."

  • "I booked this restaurant short notice for my boyfriend's 30th birthday. Our server Nicholas was energetic and engaging, wished him a happy birthday, and brought him a birthday beer and dessert with a candle in it as a surprise. The food was exceptional, and the view of the ocean was lovely. We were brought binoculars to view the wildlife with during dinner which was a great touch! I was thoroughly impressed not only with their efforts for Aaron's birthday, but with the entire experience, and would definitely go back for another special occasion."

  • " The dinner was excellent, our waiter was very good and they even prepared a Banana Split even though it was not on the desert menu. The ocean view is fantastic and includes seals playing in the waves. It was a bit noisy with many children in the crowd but then again, it was 6:30 PM so we were in the early crowd. The patio lounge is very romantic in the evenings after 8ish with the heaters flames , the ocean view and a little Pinot."

  • "We went to Schooners with our toddler and another couple for dinner while on vacation in Monterey. It's a beautiful restaurant with a great menu. We were so happy to actually find grilled chicken on the kid's menu instead of all the usual fried and unhealthy options. The food was delicious and the service was great. We went dinner on the early side and had a wonderful view from our table. It worked out well for everyone - great view for us without disturbing other diners with our toddler. We'll definitely be back! "

  • "Dined at Schooners last week and was blown away by not only the food, but also by the service. Our server Nikolas was fantastic! Very attentive, but not overly so, and humorous when the occasion called. Felt like I was dining at a friend's rather than in a busy restaurant. The crab fundido appetizer is a must have! The entrees were also delicious and wonderfully cooked. You may not be able to see the actual sunset, but the view still cannot be beat. I'm anxiously awaiting the next time I can go back to Schooners."

There are not a lot of tables by the windows with views so we really appreciated having our special request responded to and met.   • "We last ate there about 2 years ago and enjoyed the food. Not so this time. My wife's Swordfish was over cooked and as a result was tough (she ate 1/2 of it). My short ribs were a child's portion but that.s OK since they weren't very good anyway. We really liked the views of Monterey Bay but will not hurry back for a meal. Also, $125 seemed a bit step for one bar drink and two glasses with the above dinner. Nice wait staff. "
