A word from Sanctuary
Sanctuary, with its chandeliers and vaguely gothic ambiance - protected by gargoyles like the sanctuaries of Europe - is elegant, yet comfortable. It is meant to be a haven where food, service and music please the senses. A fireplace warms cold nights - a patio with flowers and herbs celebrates summer. With thick limestone, rough timbers and ceiling beams dating back to the 1860's, it reminds you of that small romantic place you'd love to visit again.

Sanctuary serves New American Cuisine, deftly combining immigrant influences from the Mediterranean to Japan into dishes that are delicious, amazing and satisfying. The menu stays enticing with weekday Tasting Menus, special creations Fri./Sat. and menu changes every other month. The StarTribune said, “[I] loved the well-paired wines, the genial service, the cozy surroundings and the kitchen's finesse."

Located one block from the Guthrie, it is the perfect place for dinner before or after a show.

Diner Reviews
  • "Normally the food is outstanding not so much last night. Maybe just a bad night - it happens. We will go again, but our friends who joined us for the first time aren't likely to try it again"

  • "Sanctuary had been on our list of restaurants to try for a quite a while, I wish we would've gone sooner! The dinner was excellent and the service was top-notch. We started off with the meat & cheese plate along with the fruit & cheese starter. Both were terrific choices and set the stage for the dinner to follow. Most of us did the 5 course tasting menu and enjoyed every bit of it. My 2 favorite courses were the chicken with raspberry/Tabasco risotto and the caramelized fresh corn off the cob with peppers.. YUM! If you don't do the tasting menu I strongly recommend the Lobster bolognese, it was fantastic! I can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu!"

  • "This is a charming little gem of a place with limestone walls, cozy wooden furniture and vibrant art on the walls. The wait staff was knowledgeable and helpful. The food was well prepared and artfully served."

  • "Bland food. Only thing that saved our dinner was the somewhat interesting cocktail flight."

  • "We're late coming to the Chef Patrick bandwagon, having just discovered Sanctuary. A little too busy and much travel elsewhere is the excuse. We stopped in for dinner before the Guthrie on Saturday, with the river of rain in the road, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting Chef Patrick and the wonderful food he produces. The artichoke tartlets and their accompaniments were outstanding, as was the pork tenderloin dish and the special of beef spare ribs. We personally we not as crazy about the bone marrow, but can see why some like it. Coffee also was perfect. Service was terrific. A keeper - we will return."

  • "Wonderful birthday dinner. Highly recommend the play on chicken and waffles. You won't be disappointed. The tomato and burrata salad was perfect."

  • "We parked at the Guthrie and walked over to the restaurant before the play. The outside patio is isolated from street noise and fumes - a fun place to eat. This is a restaurant for foodies who appreciate unusual combinations of ingredients. For instance, I had the chef's special: sea urchin with shrimp. Not everything is as adventuresome as that but all had interesting combinations of ingredients and garnishes. Our waitress was knowledgeable & helpful."

  • "It is like bring a bit of European culture to Minneapolis. The restaurant is beautiful, good food and a friendly atmosphere. I really like the ladies room too. Thank you!"

  • "Carefully designed menu with a bistro atmosphere. Some of the appetizers like the roasted bone marrow are worth walking a few miles from your hotel, we did. This chef is very thoughtful without going overboard. Had a terrific evening enjoying a very fine meal and good service. Will return."

  • "This is truly a "Sanctuary". The restaurant is very cozy and romantic, within walking distance from Guthrie Theater. Chef Patrick definitely stepped outside the box by creating a masterpiece on our plates. It's perfect for "foodies". The staff is gracious and very accommodating. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food and service were fantastic, we are moving to California and we will miss this restaurant. The chef accommodated a couple of food restrictions and the tasting menu was carefully crafted and great fun. Sanctuary has the best service of any restaurant I have been to in the Twin Cities."

  • "My wife and I just returned from 3 weeks in Paris. We were there to sample the food (again) and enjoy the French people (very friendly as usual). I read an article on the Sanctuary and thought it would be a fitting reentry for us. The wait staff were very informative and like Paris not pushy. Although it is not on the drink menu they do offer Kir which is a great start for dinner. The food was cooked correctly and presented well. I appreciated the sauces that were new to me and complimentary to the dishes. The portions were appropriate and served with the right timing. I'll be back for more....."

  • "We had only one glitch -- the food was a little slow in coming. We were scheduled for the Guthrie and ended up arriving a little late. I did warn the maitre de (and he did ask) so it wasn't as if this was a surprise to the restaurant. We weren't the only couple that got there a little late either. I suppose we could have made it on time if we had skipped dessert but we budgeted two hours, which seemed to me to be a reasonable amount of time. So if you're not in a hurry, I wholehearted recommend Sanctuary -- the dishes were inventive and exquisite (try the small plate sausages!), but chef needs a hand in the kitchen."

  • "After a 2-page review in the S-T, we had high expectations when we and another couple went for dinner last Friday night. Our server, was attentive and good-humored. We shared starters of smoked salmon carpaccio and the spinach tartlets - both pretty and delicious. Our friends enjoyed their pasta and barramundi. Unfortunately, husband's very dry chicken was sandwiched between waffles and bacon served with very dry coleslaw and a bag of Lay's Ruffles potato chips. My marlin was tough and dry. The salsa didn't help because it lacked substance, flavor and liquid. My husband's surprise birthday cake was tasty. The apple bread pudding was glutten-y. Parking was convenient and we enjoyed the patio dining. Noise, not an issue except for sirens."

  • "We brought our friends (another couple) to the Sanctuary on Friday night. Warm welcome when we walked in the door. Our server was extremely helpful and offered her favorites. We started with a Proseco toast accompanied with the artichoke tartlets. Fabulous! All of us selected different dishes (pork tenderloin, marlin, lobster and chicken) perfect for sharing. Everyone enjoyed all the entrees. I was thrilled that this was a new restaurant for our friends. We will definitely be back in the future."

  • "We enjoyed delicious lobster pasta, chocolate torte and a cheese course at Sanctuary before heading over to the Guthrie Theatre to see a play. The restaurant is an easy walk to the Guthrie and the service was quick and friendly."

  • "Food was fantastic, service was great. Plus they overlooked one hiccup - my wife booked the wrong night for the reservation. We came in and asked for our table and the man at the door said "oh, you were the ones who had the reservations last night". We checked our open table reservation, and believe it or not, we had booked the wrong night. He smiled at us and said, we can fit you in and seated us immediately. We were celebrating both my wife's and my sister in law's birthday, and they did not miss a beat. thank you to sanctuary for making us feel welcome despite our error and the food and service were exactly what we've come to expect from this top notch restaurant."

  • "It is always a pleasure to start an evening out at Sanctuary. The appetizers were delicous (especially the tart) and teh entrees varied and well prepared. OUr server was quite knowledeabel and saw to our every need."

  • "Food was spot on. Loved what they can do with simple flavors and not drenching everything in sauces. Example: the pork is amazing balanced with flavors of vanilla that compliment the pork and risotto extremely well. The risotto is not drenched in a creamy cheese sauce - balanced with flavor and texture. The smoked salmon plate was great with the peppers. The Baramundi dish hit the spot with everything on the plate, including the lemon flavored mashed potatoes. Dessert - tres leches cake was amazing. Last, but not least, the cocktails were spot on. Perfectly flavored and balanced. Go here, enjoy a drink, an app, an entree, dessert and leave happy."

  • "Our 3rd time at this place and late birthday celebration for my partner-this time we tried the tasting menu with paired cocktails. Both were wonderful. I probably would not have ordered any of the dishes we got on the tasting menu on their own, or the cocktails that came with them on their own, but paired up they were quite delicious! Other menu items looked SO GOOD I can't wait to go back! Afterwards we had a couple of cocktails we'd normally order and chatted with Kerry (sp?), their awesome bartender. This time was a little different as there was a noisy, yet entertaining group next to us. It was ok though, we still had a great time."

  • "I tried the weekday tasting menu and everything was delicious! Loved the surprising combinations that worked so well. Everything we had was delicious, and we're so glad we made it back there after a several-year interval! Especially the chicken salad, the tuna with roe and vegetables, and the pork tenderloin my husband had with the rose champagne risotto and the orchid sauce! And our server was so knowledgeable and friendly, and the entire service was so attentive! A great night!"

  • "Usually a fabulous gem, we did not have a good meal. The chicken was very dry."

  • "The setting is good, server was friendly but food was consistently off the mark and we were rushed. Did they have another table coming? Dinner in 40 minutes? Not our idea of a good time. We weren't off to the Guthrie, it was 8:00 when we started dinner. With all the fab restaurants in Minneapolis go somewhere else. "

  • "We love to start our evening out at the Guthrie or just a quiet time for the two of us with a dinner at Sanctuary. We are warmly greeted, service is personal and attentive, food is outstanding. I have recommended Sanctuary to friends and continue to do so. Just wish they would be open for lunches."

  • "This is a fabulous restaurant located on the edge of Downtown Mpls near the Aloft hotel. Nestled on the ground floor you are hit by the quiet charm of this place before you even enter the door. I was greeted warmly and escorted by the M'aitre D to the bar to wait for my group. Once seated our service was fun and friendly and quickly explained the Chef's 5 course tasting menu for the evening. Mon-Thu they offer a 5 course meal for $35 with a $14 wine pairing (4 wines) that is a great deal. The food was served beautifully and was delicious. I was especially fond of the third course which was a soft shell crab dish, spicy and sweet. YUM! Definitely a must go!!"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner for my wife's birthday. We dined outside and that atmosphere was romantic. The service was excellent. You could tell the cocktails were made by a superior bartender. I had the chicken with sort of a creole sauce and my wife had the night's special of Marlin. Both meals were exceptional. I can't say enough good things about Sanctuary. We'll be back soon."

  • "My wife and I go to Sanctuary often before shows at the Guthrie. The chef is willing to take risks and creates some of the most interesting food in the Twin Cities. We have roasted bone marrow with thyme (bone marrow is amazing if you haven't tried it), a speck appetizer with pequio peppers, and lamb chops. All were different and really good. One of my favorite restaurants in Minneapolis..."

  • "Dined at Sanctuary [again] the other night. chef prepared one of the best scallop dishes I've ever had. I don't typically order scallops at restaurants because the preparation is usually not so great. I felt I could trust the chef at Sanctuary and I was right - delicious!! I did miss Patrick behind the bar but Magic Mike was certainly a solid backup. :>)"
