Diner Reviews
  • "Very slow service. There was a small wedding on the same night and the kitchen was having trouble getting the food out. When we did get our food after waiting 45min we were very disappointed with the quality of the food. As the sun went down we started getting bit by mosquito's. Will not return."

  • "Safari Room at Ocean Cliff is a great spot for seeing a sunset and the view is spectacular. The outside menu is rather limited to sandwiches and a few entrees. Casual is fine. There was a wedding in the tent next to the grill so it was full of people having fun."

  • "We are return customers. Each and every time has been enjoyable with great food and excellent service. Honorable mention to our waitress "Crystal" she was outstanding."

  • "Quiet deck seating, beautiful views of the ocean, excellent service, valet service, varied lunch menu but limited standard dessert menu, food presentation average yet pricey."

  • "The view across Narragansett Bay i fantastic, but the food and service are in the average range. I had the 'steak frites" special, which to my surprise ended up being a steak sandwich. Still, I would return to enjoy the view."

  • "My son and I had dinner at the Safari Room on July 25th. Once again, the food was great, the views of te water and sunset were terrific, and the service was pleasant. Newport in the summer can be hectic, and we visited during the Folk Festival making the area even more crowded. Avoiding the downtown crowds, being able to hear our conversation with ease, and having good food to enjoy in such a scenic and relaxing environment was terrific. We will be back again."

  • "The food was so outstanding. I do wish we had a server that understood English better. We ordered a Jamaican coffee as a dessert and what we got was coffee. The server said he was Jamaican and said he understood. He did not charge us for the coffee. He disappeared a few times to the bar where he chatted with friends and my sister at one poing went to get him he had been gone so long."

  • "The view is absolutely fantastic, and I love the safari decor along with the walls open to the outdoors. The food is quite good and it is well priced. My son and I split the caprese salad (plenty for two) and I had the tuna sushimi. Both were very tasty. My son had the fish and chips....great fries but the fish was a massive portion. I like the option of a 9 ounce pour of wine; sometimes you want more than a glass, but not two glasses! Overall, a pleasant experience on a lovely night in Newport. I will definitely go back, if even just for the view. Note that I absolutely HATE dining at restaurants with crummy food, so I am a bit of a stickler as far as having a decent meal. Safari Room achieves that and more."

  • "This has always been one of my favorite restaurants, but things have changed--dramatically. The management has failed to maintain the property. Needs work- worn out. Menu has changed. What used to be a fine dining experience is now close to a diner menu- except diner food is better. Waited and waited for our bowl of $ 24.00 lobster bisque which when it finally came was bland, tasteless and outright in the Campbell soup category.DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT. I was shocked when Open Table had a 7 oclock. Pm opening at this resataurant on a beautiful Saturday night in Newport but surprised when we arrived that the place was almost. EMPTY--- now I know why."

  • "Once again, we had a very good meal at Safari Grill. The Maryland crab cakes were excellent. The Kobe beef burger was a little overdone but tasty. Service could have been more attentive. Good wine selection."

  • "Could not have been better - great seats with spectacular view of the ocean. Fantastic service dinner and drinks. Not our first time here and definitely not our last."

  • "Fantastic view of the bridge and sunset over the bay. Food is nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. I had the seafood fra diablo which had big chunks of lobster (nice). The sauce had just a bit of bite. The waiter warned me that it was spicy. It certainly was not spicy enough to warn about, and tasted a bit canned... The pappardelle was a bit too thick and a bit too al dente. My date enjoyed her tuna, but the wasabi sauce seemed to me a bit on the sweet side. No specials on the menu. Service was ok, but a bit less than attentive. Bring a hat! Our guests enjoyed the sunset view, but had to stare into the sun's glare until then."

  • "Fabulous setting with gorgeous sunset and views of Jamestown and the Newport Bridge. This place should be outstanding, but it is awful. Food was horrible Service was not good. Waitress forget to take the order of one person; we had to continually ask for water Homemade "pretzels" were dripping with grease; $9 price point - unconscionable Lobster Mac n Cheese had no lobster Clam chowder luke warm Steaks were listed as Sirloin Strip Steaks but all 4 steaks were full of fat; we could hardly cut through them; should have sent them back to the kitchen French fries were over salted. Chicken piccata was overcooked and bland We were married at this spot and have a sentimental attachment to it, but we would never, ever go back to The Safari Room."

  • "I have been to the Safari room a few times because I love the view and atmosphere. I keep giving the food a try but continue to be disappointed. I had chicken which was really dry and had no flavor to it. Last time I had Salmon which also was not good. A couple of the others with me did like their meals."

  • "It was a very nice castle, lovely floral arrangements. It had a great water view. Lots of options, sit and vegge out with your favorite wine on the lawn chairs; or chat with the friendly bar staff. Food was excellent and different. Good size portions."

  • "I recently went here for a date and had a wonderful experience. Greeted and confirmed with lovely Victoria who hooked me up with a killer table. Zach and Krystle handled our service making it fun and enjoyable date. Sunset view is awesome and yet prices are easier than some of the neighboring resorts. Food was good, wouldn't of minded a bit more unique parings as I'm a bit of a foodie. But never the less my sword-steak was amazing and didn't leave much behind. Would certainly recommend someone to visit here, great view, had fun, and was easier attitudes and dress code. Well done Safari Room! See you soon for my next date!"

  • "This restaurant was recommended by a friend and although we loved the venue-the food was pedestrian. It may be a better spot for brunch or lunch. My boyfriend ordered salmon well done and it came raw and I ordered a lobster salad. The lobster offered was less than a cup and it was surrounded by greens and tomatoes which were not ripe. We also had to wait for our drinks quite a while With so many restaurant options available in Newport this one us not one I would recommend for dinner."

  • "A drink overlooking picturesque Narragansett bay in classic adirondack chairs followed by a relaxing dinner steps away in the open air setting at sunset. Our third visit to the Safari Room was the right choice to wow an out of town guest. Friendly attentive staff, great food and wine list, we will be back for more."

  • "The Safari Room at Ocean Cliff Resort did not offer a dining experience worth repeating. While the restaurant offers remarkable views from the exterior covered deck, this was overshadowed by poor service, overcooked food and mismanagement. The restaurant was not even busy for a Thursday evening. The wait staff was courteous, but clearly inexperienced in the food service industry. The empty bread basket and butter dish sat on the table through dinner, waters were never refilled, and I was not offered a second drink. While my wife's Tuna meal was great, my filet mignon was overcooked and cold to the touch-not medium as requested. Lastly, the table side heaters ran out of propane halfway through service and were not reset in a timely manner."

  • "Fantastic location, very friendly staff, nothing special food with catering hall atmosphere. Worth a trip to see the type of place that looks like old newport , food is OK if you stick to basics, decent drink menu and very fairly priced menu so good for groups or gatherings. Staff is professional if a bit impersonal but they get the job done. Very popular spot for weddings and deservedly so as location easily rival's castle hill. This is a special occasion place that you go to enjoy the company you're with in a unique setting- the food is decent."

  • "Sunday afternoon lunch on the deck; food arrived timely, friendly staff, excellent food, good atmosphere and nice views combined with a place to park in the center of all the activity made for a nice overall experience. Specialty bar drinks a bit pricey. A good choice for our anniversary lunch. Would recommend as a top choice on the water."

  • "We arrived a bit early for our reservations, and had drinks overlooking a very beautiful scenic view. Since our reservations where at 3 (on a Sunday), I thought we would be having a lunch menu, however it was still brunch. The brunch menu choices where very limited. The food was OK, but a bit over-priced (a single slice of banana french toast was $14.95!). "

  • "The positives first: the view was amazing and the Safari Room was classy not kitschy in decor. For the price points and descriptions on the menu I had very high hopes. My husband ordered the Salmon w Romesco sauce ($28), me, the lobster roll, and guests had the lobster mac and cheese. The salmon was a good portion but dry and overcooked. Romesco "sauce" was a dollop of tomato pesto, and underseasoned. My lobster roll ($24) was large, tasted of frozen lobster, over dressed (creme fraische tarragon dressing was so runny!) And the bun was a dense ciabatta than an soft typical buttered bun. Our friend was excited to have the lobster mac and cheese ($18) more like a penne w alfredo sauce, with a few bits of lobster. Definite fail."

  • "I took my wife here for her birthday and we both had a great time. The food was very well presented and the portion sizes were perfect. I can safely say that we ate the BEST scallops and swordfish EVER at this restaurant. The drinks were excellent and the wait staff were very professional and always accommodating."

  • "Safari room is a lovely restaurant inside a beautiful Newport Irish Castle. Food was great with some unusual items such as foie gras stuffed morel mushrooms. Was looking forward to their advertised beef wellington, however, it was a filet placed upon a small pastry with a onion/fig center. Was looking forward to the traditional beef wellington. Service was a little lame and not fitting with the ambience..."

  • "Winter lunch experience over-all positive. Remarkable view especially on a sunny day. Attentive waiter. One member of party of three said the dessert was the best he had ever ordered. All felt the lunch was highly overpriced. World travelers with much dining experience. Would come again for the view and the lovely building. The ladies found either no soap or a non-working dispenser in the women's lounge. We did follow the Safari Room sign to the left which must be the summer entrance as it was closed. Then went around to find the main door. Found the dining area on our own after entering as no one was there to greet us."
