RyeSpecial diningThis is a great place to book for special occasions.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMTerrific!A truly super meal! I had the buttered shrimp with grits, a bit concerned that it might be too rich to eat all of it. It was perfect and I enjoyed every bite. I was also able to taste the trout and fried chicken from my friends' plates and found them to be fabulous as well. Our server was gave wonderful descriptions about many of the entrees which we found most helpful in making our choices. Looking forward to returning soon!5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMThe service was wonderfulThe service was wonderful and the food was exceptional. We ate on the patio which has a very comfortable feel. this was our first visit to Rye and we will return.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMSuper brunch. From start to finish, service was outstanding. Friendly staff. Brunch portion sizes were perfect. I am already craving more apple fritters, blueberry muffins and of course pie. The burnt end hash I ordered was delicious & topped with 2 perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs. Yum. Cheers to the entire staff at Rye for such a great experience. Can't wait to return.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth the visitGreat food, albeit smaller portions. Incredible desserts! Definately will go back.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of a kindAfter months of trying to get a reservation, my wife and I were able to get a table at Rye for our 17th Anniversary dinner. It was worth the hype and wait, best experience in KC yet. The wait staff was clearly hand picked and know their menus, gave excellent recommendations and paired the wine perfectly. The wine list is a little short but the options are not common which peaked our interests, and were extremely well priced. The food was out of this world delicious and the ambiance was simply outstanding. The mix of comfort food with a modern flair is brilliant. We will certainly be regulars here, assuming we can get a reservation, well done!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOrder What's HotThis was my second visit to Rye and I was happy but not as impressed as my first experience. This is a place where you have to order the right thing. They have great, crispy fried chicken. The salmon was delicious as was the hot shrimp and grits (pretty salty though). I ordered the flank steak (recommended by my server) and it was so tough I sent it back. I feel like flank steak can be done really well if its cooked right. They apologized repeatedly and did offer to bring me something else but ended up just comping my meal.
It's a great atmosphere ... The food is good but not amazing. If you like southern food you will be pleased.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMA Pleasure for All PalatesThe chef just won a really prestigious award and the food did not disappoint! Went with my grandfather and my mother and everyone was happy all around. I had the excellent hanger steak, my grandfather had fried chicken, and my mom had shrimp and grits. The wine list was really great and I had a wonderful dry Riesling before the meail. We definitely recommend this restaurant and I plan to return in the not too distant future.
It was a little noisy which made conversation a little difficult. But a crowd hopefully indicates that the restaurant will succeed and be around for a long time.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMenu featured items you don'tMenu featured items you don't always see (e.g. rabbit legs) and there was a separate menu listing side dishes. Not an extensive wine list but very adequate and it contained some wonderful selections again many of which are not often seen. Our waitress was extremely well versed and pleasant and the service was efficient. I'll be back.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best things about RyeThe best things about Rye are that the food is delicious, the service perfectly suited to the feel of the restaurant, and that reservations are accepted. Although it's menu doesn't cater directly to vegetarians, it's easy to create a yummy lunch for one's self and be more than satisfied. There's also excellent fish, so those of us who don't eat pork or red meat are happy as can be. I love that Rye's focus is local and that many of its vendor sources are nearby as well. I think the chefs have beautifully accomplished their goal of basing a modern cuisine on that of their grandmothers.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMVery nice eveningWe had a great evening. The food was terrific and the service was very good. If I had a suggestion it would be carpet, to help dampen the noise level a bit. But we will return, to be sure! And recommend to others.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat chicken! (Best everGreat chicken! (Best ever per my wife who is the real foodie of the pair.) All the food was wonderful and with the focus on seasonal ingredients it all tastes so fresh and vibrant. The worst thing I can say is that it's not a cheap date place, but if your looking for an excellent hardy meal, Rye needs to be in consideration!4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experienceFood was excellent and service was great as well. Living in the neighborhood, I've seen many restaurants come and go in this space. After re-configuring the space and developing a new fresh concept, Rye should be there for the long haul. Best Fried Chicken I have had in years....4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGood overall...Our food and service were good, although my husband's fried chicken plate contained one breast and one back (which seems a bit strange...). The food was well-prepared and very nicely presented.4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding food each visit.Outstanding food each visit. Last service was slightly delayed due to apparently unexpected crowd, but waiter was informative.4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything about the restaurantEverything about the restaurant was spot-on. The service as we walked in the door, the food's timing on our table, the food itself (best mashed potatoes I've ever had), the decor, presentation, etc. I easily could go back there once a week.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMSame great service and attentionSame great service and attention to detail as Bluestem but in a more casual atmosphere.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMLoud. Pricey. Limited menu.Loud. Pricey. Limited menu. Might be better for lunch rather than dinner.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMMust try this new restaurantService and food were OUTSTANDING. Perfectly prepared and interesting menu. Not the "same old restaurant". However, the noise level was distracting for my taste. Would not let that stop me from returning.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful food and service.Wonderful food and service. Great menu slections. Our waiter was inicredible. This was business luncheon and we were not rushed at all. This is a must try place. Your first visit wil not be your last!4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food great server hadGood food great server had a wonderfully French white burgundy salmon was cooked perfectly4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicios food and great atmospere.Delicios food and great atmospere. Knowledgable wait staff is helpful and friendly.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMI ordered the pulled porkI ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it was delicious! The meat was so tender and flavorful. The only downside was the bottom bun was a bit soggy, I imagine from the slaw on the sandwich.
I also loved the chips = so flavor-full.
The pickles are a bit vineagar-y but I got used to that and ate them all:~)4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMComfort food, prepared exquisitely.Another gem from Megan and Colby Garrelts, the creators of Bluestem. Have been there 3 times, with different friends, and everything anyone has ordered has been excellent. I think the Canellini Beans are the best thing on the menu. I want to go back the next day to get more. If you want something fried, the Chicken Fried Pork is excellent. So was the Buttered Shrimp with pulled pork over grits. Megan, as usual, does an amazing job with the desserts. You think you can't eat another thing, but must get dessert, because it will make you swoon all over again. Pies all excellent. The brown butter ice cream that comes with the carrot cake is exceptional. You've had many of these dishes before, but never this good.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMA standout choice in JoCoEach item on the menu will surprise you with the depth of flavors that can be presented in what appears to be "known" dishes. Don't fail to have a bowl of whatever soup is being featured. They have been repeatedly excellent and imaginative. Also, don't be frightened by the XXX on the hot sauce bottle. Not all that spicy (even by Kansas standards) but with a smoky background that will make you want to tuck it in your pocket for any number of other uses at home.Highly recommended as a place for a very reasonably priced lunch that a guest will not forget. This is where I take out-of-towners for a sophisticated taste of the midwest.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMI have been twice and everyI have been twice and every time the food has been amazing. I will be going back.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMTrout & Shrimp & Grits outstandingTrout & Shrimp & Grits outstanding entrees, rhubarb pie & carrot cake desserts outstanding as well. My only criticism is the noise level. It was almost impossible to carry on a conversation at a table for 5. Our server was knowledgable & personable. Very good experience except for the noise level.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMSpecial TreatmentMy guests and I had a wonderful dining experience at Rye. I had requested special treatment for my friends, and we were treated specially from the moment we walked in the door until the moment we left. While the service was great, the food was spectacular. The lemon meringue pie was the best I've ever tasted. Thank you again, everyone at Rye, for the great dining experience you provided for my friends and me.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMA fabulous combination ofA fabulous combination of casual dining and unbelievable delicious food. It was the best fried chicken I have ever tasted in my life and all other dishes were comparable. Our servers were all fun, energetic and helpful. We took clients to celebrate the end of a very successful project and it was the perfect evening.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMA great time and even better steakWalking in to Rye is like being welcomed home. The friendly service and attention given by GM Jeremy and staff makes you want to sit down, relax with some good wine and savor the food that’s coming. We’ve always stuck with the chicken or BBQ, but last night we tried the dry aged ribeye. It’s the best steak in KC. Yes, the best. After sharing an appetizer of the butcher board, 2 of us shared the ribeye that comes with salad and one side. That left barely enough room to have a great apple butter crisp for dessert. And the $40 and under wine list gives us lots of great new choices to try something new. As always, we left happy that we have this kind of great quality food and environment so close to home.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMNeighborhood Upscale Meet Leawood..We were here recently for a Goat Cheese tasting event. The food and wine pairings were wonderful. Given that we only live a few blocks away, and the selection of small batch bourbons/whiskeys and scotches is so nice, we'll be back. They will be opening the patio as soon as weather permits. I wonder if they would let me park my dogs next to me on the patio while I enjoy a scotch...there would be many late night dog walks. :)4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMA group of us ladies enjoyedA group of us ladies enjoyed Rye for a birthday lunch on Tues, 4/16. Service was very good, server was informative, bright and bubbly, venue was lively and energetic, flowers especially nice. Plan to go back to have dinner with my husband.
Choices for lunch were excellent: shrimp and grits, pork tenderloin sandwich and the "Midtown" I ordered the shrimp and grits, never a grits lover an now look forward to having more!!!
Thank you for a enjoyable afternoon.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMThere was four of us for brunch. There was four of us for brunch. Two for the first time. Two has the Rye breakfast, one has BBQ Hash and eggs with grits and one had Biscuits/Gravy with eggs and bacon. All were perfect and delicious. Service was excellent.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMHAD A GREAT MEAL WITH FRIENDSHAD A GREAT MEAL WITH FRIENDS WHO'D NEVER BEEN THERE. THEY LOVED IT!4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMMy parents were in town andMy parents were in town and so my husband and I took them here for dinner. We had been to Blue Stem and loved the dining experience there so knowing that it was the same chefs at Rye gave us a lot of hope that Rye would be excellent - we were not disappointed! Thanks!4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMIf you like southern homestyleIf you like southern homestyle cooking with sophistication, you will love Rye!4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Colonel would be jealous!Having tried most of the dining establishments in south KC and Johnson County, going to Rye was an unexpected surprise. It is often a kiss of death going into a space where other restaurants have failed but Megan and Colby are not novices. The space was transformed into a warm inviting place with a ton of wood. The service is attentive, the management keeps the place humming along and the food - presented beautifully on white plates. I've been there 4 times now and everything I tried was done perfectly. I have always been a chicken guy and KC has a few places who specialize in chicken. I would put Rye's chicken up against any of them. Nice crust, juicy and very flavorful. I'm getting hungry for it just thinking about it at 6 AM!4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMHealthy menu with excellentHealthy menu with excellent ambiance! Very unusual!4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food is excellent; however,The food is excellent; however, the prices are too high for what you get.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AM$$$$$Good food, but too pricey
very loud - could use some sound attenuation
very open - contributes to the noise level, and could be a little more intimate
but very desirable as a neighborhood option!4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMi had been for lunch, howeveri had been for lunch, however this was my husband's 1st time.
brunch had so many choices that looked enticing, it was difficult to choose.
we enjoyed the crepes and eggs benedict, both of which were wonderful.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMy new Fav place to go, can'tMy new Fav place to go, can't wait for warm weather for the patio!!4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyable evening, although........Overall it was an enjoyable experience. Although the food/service was very good, it seemed to be a little pricey.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat foodHaving been very impressed on our first visit, we returned with friends. The trout was again beyond excellent. Our friends raved about the shrimp and grits. Don't leave without trying the Meyer lemon meringue pie, if you have room after the goat cheese appetizer!
As opposed to our first visit, Rye seemed somewhat short-staffed. Our server was good but too busy to return or refill as quickly as I would have liked. And when I asked for comparative details on the (pretty decent) basic wine list, our server commendably sought out their wine guy. I can't judge whether he deserved the term "sommelier" -- he merely sent her back with generic descriptions. Watching, I had the impression he felt too busy to personally help us.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMOur server Alex was great,Our server Alex was great, we enjoyed everything and will be back when we are in the area again!4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were there to celebrateWe were there to celebrate a birthday. Service was exceptional from all who helped us. Fried chicken, mac & cheese and brussels sprouts all fantastic. My guest had the brisket and beans. Both had good flavor but the meat was just slightly dry and the beans were a little firmer than we thought they should be. Dessert was the banana pie and carrot cake-perfect ending to a nice evening. We would definitely go back.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was amazing. The serviceFood was amazing. The service was even better. Nice to go to a KC restaurant on a Monday at 8:15 and still have an atmosphere. Service was first class.4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMBingo!! We have our placeWe may have found our go-to restaurant. Everything from the service to the sommelier to the food was excellent. The Missus and I both had steaks, she a filet and I an a dry-aged ribeye. Perfectly done. The ribeye was crusty on the outside while red on the inside. I had a side of mushrooms which perfectly complimented the steak. The boss had the filet with a side order of whipped sweet potatoes. She continues to rave about it. Our wait person was knowledgeable about the menu. The wine list is very fairly priced. The sommelier(Jeff?) was very helpful.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding restaurant andOutstanding restaurant and great service.
