Diner Reviews
  • "What I most noticed was the attentiveness of the staff. We thoroughly enjoyed lunch and would return."

  • "Overall it was good. My steak was a little bit over cooked and calamari was a little cold. Our server was amazing. I don't remember her name. Thanks for the great service!"

  • "We had a couple questions about an upcoming event at the restaurant and the manager Steve was very helpful and showed us the different room options. We had dinner in the downstairs dining room which was beautiful. Clay was our server and he had great recommendations for food and wine. We started with the crab cakes which we so fresh and flavorful that he paired the Matua Sauvignon Blanc with. For the entree we split the Firepot Swordfish and it was outstanding. The seasonings are perfect with a little bit of a kick from the cajun spices and sweetness from the mango salsa. The overall experience was fantastic and the view makes it that much better!"

  • "Over priced and definitely overrated. Garlic bread not up to being any ones signature speciality Fish cakes were excellent but the calamari average. Main course halibut....fish good but served on mashed potato and nothing else lacked a lot of imagination. Highly overpriced dish. regards Tom ( an Australian ,two weeks in California and staying 4 years)"

  • "Took a group of 4 and absolutely loved the food, ambience and service. We started with happy hour in the upstairs where we enjoyed the Cajun shrimp and goat cheese appetizers as well as the view of the harbor. We then ate our meal downstairs where again, we enjoyed a great sunset view of the harbor. This restaurant is lively and friendly and great for small groups. I had the spinach stuffed salmon which was to die for. Would definitely recommend the Rusty Pelican to anyone."

  • "Would have given 5 stars but at time of arrival, valet was backed up so delayed 10 minutes, sat down and no service for a little while. Advised server that we had limited time and we were still there for almost two hours. Pace was slow and our appetizer order was not placed and came last and we were still charged for the calamari when we didn't even have a chance to eat it. Love this restaurant, just won't go there when limited on time."

  • "I dined here with my wife and daughter. We all loved our different fish meals. . Fish cooked perfectly as well. Appetizers were fantastic. Bar drinks were a little strong. We ate in the patio. Was too cold even with their overhead heat lamps and blankets. Inefficient heating for the space. Excellent service. We were 10 minutes late on our reservation but I called and said they'd still hold it. Very nice."

  • "How can an upscale restaurant not have Ribeye Steak on their menu. Sad day when you go for fine food, drinks, bay view and (what, no Ribeye steaks??). It was very disappointing, which made the entire time one to to be desired. Once they have Ribeye on their menu, we will return. There are many other restaurants with the same atmosphere and location, that we will establish. Ribeye is a combination on tenderness, taste and overall perfection. It is my steak of choice....Rusty Pelican does not have this awesome steak for us steak lovers."

  • "We had a lunch reservation and were seated right away at a window table overlooking Newport Harbor, just as I had requested. There were so many choices on the lunch menu and all of them sounded delicious. I and my 3 friends loved the garlic bread, each of our entrees, and the key lime pie we shared at the end. Our waiter was terrific and knew details of all the specials and other dishes on the menu. My friends and I meet for lunch once a month and our lunch at the Rusty Pelican was the best so far."

  • "We had to wait a few minutes for our reservation, but the wait was worth it. Meal and service were great on Sunday. When we returned for lunch on Wednesday the service was great again, but the hostess made us feel like we belonged in the bar and not the restaurant even though a waiter tried to seat us twice and she stopped him. Shouldn't it be the other way around - hostess finding us a spot that is and not the waiter. She wasn't doing her job or the restaurant justice due to her arrogance. I think she was more worried about her appearance to the single men coming into the restaurant than a couple wanting a nice lunch on vacation on their annual visit to the Newport Beach area."

  • "Rusty Pelican is always my favorite for fresh fish selections and their wonderful garlic bread. This time we had the halibut prepared with lemon butter capers and mashed potatoes. Our table also had the seared ruby ahi with wasabi (nicely spicy), the salmon fire-pot style and the spicy shrimp scampi (amazing). For appetizers we had the crab cakes and crab bisque, and for desert we had the key lime pie, fresh berries in amaretto cream sauce, and the chocolate torte with ice cream. Everything tasted so excellent that we didn't have anything left to take home. The service was excellent! Thank you Rusty Pelican for another wonderful evening out!"

  • "My friends and I were celebrating my birthday, this was the perfect spot. Great view, good food and excellent service. This is my third visit and I would recommend this for a special occasion, a casual dinner and a perfect Sunday afternoon. The staff makes you feel so welcome and comfortable, I will definitely be back."

  • "Ive never been more disappointed in a restaurant than I did on March 29. My girlfriend had her birthday dinner celebration their with her friends. The service was not good. We were rushed the entire night, the food was moderately earn. I spoke with the manager that night and explained everything to him and he could have cared the least to what I had to say. He had excuses for his employees rather than acknowledge what the problems were."

  • "We went to Rusty Pelican to celebrate my mom's birthday. We had a party of 9 and there wasn't any complaints from anyone. Great service and great food. Thank you so much for making my mom's birthday a great one!"

  • "This restaurant has been on the bay for so long but still holds its reputation serving great fresh fish. The bar area upstairs seems to be popular still and of course the views are spectacular of the bay. Had the opportunity to enjoy lunch on the patio which prompted me to come back for dinner a week later. The deal of the day is lunch for same amount of fresh fish, food and view for a third the costs. Will be back for sure. Thanks for staying open all these years."

  • "Seldom disappointed with the food, service can be average to great. Always busy and loud. As the weather improves, the outdoor dinning will be an option. Great harbor views."

  • "Everything was great, however even with a reservation the wait was over an hour to be seated. The restaurant was packed because of Restaurant Week, but it was still a little discouraging to have to wait for over an hour. Once we were seated, the service was very good and the food was delicious."

  • "The noise level was unusually high during our visit (which was 530PM on a Sunday). The window-side tables were too close together and we were jammed in. Even though we know the object is to serve as many guests as possible, the restaurant would be well-served to remove one window-side table so diners can enjoy their meals without being bumped by the diners at the next table. Other than those two items, waitstaff was friendly and engaged and professional."

  • "Our experience 'OVERALL' was wonderful despite the fact that a busboy lost control of his tray filled with a water container and glasses and everything went flying toward me! Missed me. HOWEVER, 10 minutes later a waitress had an accident with another employee and her tray filled with water bottle and glasses went FLYING AT ME....THIS TIME I WAS DRENCHED WITH WATER...no problem with glass thank goodness. Our waitress should have been showered with PRAISE as she attempted to DRY ME OFF and her concern over my "condition" after the accident. The restaurant showed their CONCERN by covering our dinner cost which was an appropriate response to the accident."

  • "What an amazing restaurant. The views were spectacular! The food top notch. I had the swordfish prepared in an "asian" miso broth! AMAZING!!! Best swordfish I have EVER had! My spouse had the filet (not a fish lover) and that was excellent as well. Will definitely be back!"

  • "I think the food is really good here, but all the other issues involved make me not want to come back. Every time I have made a reservation I wait at least 30-45 minutes before we are seated. This is NOT ok. For this reason I gave the one star for service. Once we were seated our waitress was friendly and did a good job. It is very loud in the back area of the restaurant so I always as to be seated in the front area, but I am always seated in the way back. Does the restaurant even look at special requests??"

  • "Our reservations were on time and we were given a window table as requested. The service was great and we took our servers advice and orderderd the special...Chilean sea bass and it was outstanding. Everything about the evening was special!"

  • "Rusty Pelican NPB was a evening to remember. The service was outstanding, every request was met, every need taken care of before we even asked. The food was very well prepared and delicious. We had a variety or fish, and steak all very delicious and right on time. The Crab Cakes were loaded with crab and started our meal in the right direction. Being a Birthday celebration a bottle of Champagne was in the plans and made the evening even more special."

  • "The place is solid. My meal consisted of the garlic bread (A+), clam chowder soup (B), the special chilean seabass (A), and of course the dessert. It was my birthday dinner so the restaurant brought some ice cream as well as we ordered the Baked Alaska (A) One of my favorite restaurants and I personally like going at lunch."

  • "We had lunch here - our first visit - and had a great experience. Service was first rate - attentive and thorough, the food was delicious (with generous portions) and the atmosphere was bright and warm and the views of the bay were very nice. A small but nice touch - salad plates that are angled and make the salads easier to eat. Two of our group had salads, one had the seafood omelet, and I had the fresh salmon - all of which were delicious. They also have valet parking. We would definitely return again."

  • "We always loved to go to the Rusty Pelican when we lived in Orange County. Haven't been able to get back for many years since moving out of state so it felt like coming home. Wonderful seafood and reasonable wine prices. Our table was right on the water and the views of the harbor can't be beat. We are definitely be coming back."

  • "I've eaten at The Rusty Pelican half a dozen times. This was our first brunch. Menu was ok; fresh fish was recommended by the server. It took several trips to get our drinks, and 1.5 hours to get our main courses. The food, when we got it, was disappointing all around. Sides were cold, mains were barely warm. Taste was average. The vegetable medley on the dish was corn with a couple pieces of tomato. Disappointing. Our server wasn't to blame. Tables were crammed in everywhere and he was run off his feet~simply NOT enough help! I felt like I should help him. Future drink orders were given two or three times and although he was pleasant, you could see he was tired and frustrated. Not sure I'm going back. What a shame."

  • "Our waitress, Jeanette, was perfect. We were early and she seated us and took our drink orders. She provided excellent advice on the daily specials, brought extra bread and checked on us every 5 - 10 minutes even though the restaurant got very busy. When she asked if we wanted anything else and we said 'no' the check was at our table in 3 minutes with an explanation that we could stay as long as we liked. Service was definitely a 10."

  • "This restaurant has been great for years. The service has alway been friendly and customer-oriented - you'll feel special and taken care of. Regarding the menu, the seafood has been my favorite, Chilean Sea Bass and Halibut are always prepared well, along woth some terrific appetizers. Not too pricey for Newport, especially with a nice view of the harbor."

  • "We ate outdoors which made the noise level perfect for us. Indoors was louder than we like -- we're 70 years old. The evening was beautifully warm, the food was good, there were yachts bobbing next to us. What's not to like?"

  • "came here to celebrate birthday. Food was good, but seem over price for what it is. King Fish House might be better option for same quality of food. Maybe its the service that costly... but all services staff should be friendly"

  • "We found this restaurant 10 yrs ago and enjoyed the food and service then so made it a definite to come back to. 10 years later the food was awesome and our server Justin was everything you wanted. Not too pushy but very knowledgeable about the food. Even the fussy eater in the group was impressed."

  • "Had out of town guest and they enjoyed the view and food. They varied pleased everyone's different tastes. Enjoyed four different fishes and one shrimp dish and all were very tasty. Shared one key lime pie dessert and that was also to everyone's liking. They only negative thing I always say that that the house sour dough bread is never offered unless asked for instead the garlic bread is always tried to be pushed."
