The wine choices were great, we were given a yummy dessert in celebration of our anniversary. Then after dinner we went upstairs to the lounge room with more fantastic views and a more relaxed ambiance for those wanting to just sit at the bar and enjoy drinks and starters."

  • "We loved this restaurant for our anniversary. It was perfect. The garlic bread is to die for. Our free anniversary dessert was delicious, mouth watering chocolate lava Raspberry yumnyness. The parking lot is so small that it's valet only. The restrooms are also extremely small. Other than that it's a very nice seafood restaurant."

  • "The Rusty Pelican has been here for a very long time and has always been a place for special occasions. This still holds true many years later with a great location along the bay in Newport. The service was good and the server made suggestions on dishes and drinks. The prices are pretty standard for seafood and there was a very good selection. The food quality, including appetizers, drinks and main course were all very tasty and well-prepared. I chose a King Salmon dish with Pesto sauce and it was excellent. I would not hesitate to to revisit this classic restaurant."

  • "Our meal, to celebrate a birthday, was a bust. There was a very crowded and loud dining room and meager wine list. Our waiter recommended some dishes which were uneatable, either because they were very gloppy or over spiced. The main course of arctic char, though, was good. The Alaskan Halibut special was overdone with a macadamia nut coating and salsa. While our dinner dishes and wine were still on the table an assistant waiter rushed a birthday dessert to our table. It was a memorable night, but not for the reasons we wanted!"

  • "Reservations 7:30 seated at 8:45 if that tells you anything. We were a small party of 6 with a bride in a full gown. You would think we were noticeable in the bar, but the waitstaff just kept walking past us. It took sometime for a server to even acknowledge our group. Finally, I got frustrated and had to wave someone down. They took our drink order and once again to get them I had to wave someone down. The drinks arrived we are now 30 min into sitting waiting. No joke! I became the server and went directly to the bartender an got drinks for my group from that point on. Told the table was ready ended up standing in the door way for another 15 min while they cleared the table. Top it off they ran out of prime rib by the time we ordered."

  • "We liked the atmosphere, garlic bread and Raw Oyster, for the 3 entree, 2 of us chose a full priced Halibut and Sea Base which our server has highly recommended, (she was like a used car sales person , very pushy). It turned out lunch priceed Sword fish was the best, very disappointed on the Halibut which was very very dry and very very fishy. Wish we were greeted back so we have a chance to exchange to another fish entree and we don't have fill up hungry stomach with bread and rice"

  • "When I made my reservation I requested a table outside because my brother and his family were coming from North Carolina. I wanted it to be special knowing it was noisy inside and the view was beautiful outside. When we got there they were seating us inside but I told them I requested outside. She said they can't accomidate large parties outside, there were eight in our party. During dinner I looked outside and saw a party of seven. It was extremely loud inside and at 9:00 the band started playing right above us. I wish they would have put us outside. However the food was great."

  • "i booked this reservation for my mother's 55th birthday. the reservations were for 7:15 pm, yet we were not seated until nearly 8:10 pm. this was disappointing, as there was no standing or sitting room in the bar area, and the hostesses could do little to provide any information to us. as this was a special occasion and i'd booked in advance, i expected better service. the food was very good yet service was lacking. aside from the complimentary birthday ice cream, there were no apologies or accommodations made by the rusty pelican, and the manager never stopped by to explain the lengthy and uncomfortable wait. i will stick to lunch at this place, as they don't seem prepared in handling weekend dinner service during tourist seasons."

The noise was over the top, even the waiter could not hear our order correctly as was evidenced by bringing us the wrong drinks, and getting our order wrong. The service when provided was good, it seemed like our waiter was more interested in the table with a large dinner party. I was disappointed as I had asked that an outside table by the water be reserved as it was our 26th year anniversary and I wanted it to be romantic for my wife, but when we got there they told us it would be an extra hour beyond our reservation time to get an outside table. Also we were seated by the double doors that was used to go out to the outside seating. Very nerve racking!"

  • "I haven't been to Rusty Pelican on the water in Newport Beach since moving to San Diego a number of years ago. When my nephew came to town on business in Orange County, I was looking for good food with a view. Rusty Pelican fit the bill perfectly. Our waiter was outstanding and the food was superb! The menu selection made it difficult to choose which fresh fish to get. And my husband had a really meaty cut of halibut - he said the best he's ever had. We're going to have to drive up the coast more often for dinner now...."

  • "Our table was bay-front with a spectacular view. Matt, our server, recommended the garlic toast starter and Mahi-Mahi plate served over jasmine rice. My friend requested that instead of rice, would it be possible to substitute pasta? With an affirmative reply from Matt, we both went for the Mahi. What arrived was a beaufiful slab of Mahi-Mahi over a bed of angel-hair pasta, covered with a shrimp/garlic herb sauce. Matt said they had never served the Mahi that way, but the staff was impressed with the result. They asked if he would like to name the dish; so he named it alfter himself: The "Franklin". It was incredible. By the way, the garlic toast was great as well. Next time you stop by the Rusty Pelican, ask for a "Franklin" special."

  • "We love this restaurant! The food, the view and servers are the BEST. But..... they took my favorite dessert off the menu. PLEASE TELL THEM TO PUT THE BAKED ALASKAS back on the menu. We have only eaten there a few times since they took it off the menu. We were eating there once a week...now only once a month :( The only reason I didn't give five stars for the overall dining experience was there was no baked Alaska to finish it off."

  • "I was driving around on a Sunday lafe afternonn with my husband and kids and decided at the last minute to go to dinner.This place would be ideal for adults but it was okay for kids too. We sat indoors and we're placed near a family with a baby and young child. It was a great dinner abd service abd had we made reservations earlier we could probably had more sitting g options. Overakl, I highly recommend."

  • "We took my sister-in-law to lunch for her birthday. Kim, the hostess, was as sweet as she always is. Our server today was Mariane Z. We waited for our drinks & to order our lunch. The food was delivered by another server, but Mariane didn't stop by to see if "everything" was alright. In fact "everything" was not. We had to flag her down for "everything". My husband asked her to bring his soup when he was finished with his salad, so the soup wouldn't sit & get cold. She delivered his soup before he was finished with his salad & she said "I thought you were done" & put it on the table & left. There were other issues with her, but I can say, the service we got today was not the norm!"

  • "We were given a table at the windows with a view of Newport Harbor. It was a full house, so the kitchen and bar were backed up with orders. The opportunity to watch the harbor activity and visit was so pleasant we didn't mind. The garlic bread was outstanding (watch for the drips), and the orange & ginger glazed Mahi Mahi was indeed spicy. It was delightfully presented, cooked to perfection, served on rice with most of the glaze surrounding the rice. This allows as much of the glaze to be added to the fish as one would like. The chocolate torte was rich, moist, falvorful and steaming when cut into at the bottom of the bowl. Surprising that the ice cream on top did not melt immediately, but it stayed firm until the last bite."

One gets the idea that this is where you bring Miss February to dine, whether she is last month's or you've been married to her from 1967. Quite spendy but worth every dime."

  • "We've eaten at Rusty Pelican many times and stopped for an early dinner (3 of us). We ordered the garlic bread which was amazing, and then a caesar salad which was served quickly while we waited about 15 more minutes for my husband's appetizer. Finally his came. Obviously there was some problem with the order (the waiter didn't check back promptly enough) Then entrees were served. The $35 special was halibut - we had two of those and I had the ahi. I believe that the entree's were ready but held because of the delay on the appetizer and therefore the ahi was completely dried out; the special halibut was anything but because it was barely at room temperature. The waiter never returned to check on the food so we suffered through it."
