Diner Reviews
  • "In all aspects what is promised: Excellent fusion food, nice setting with bay view, good wine list, superb service. Price range certainly up-scale, but justified."

  • "Great service and food! Really nice sitting outside on the patio by the fire pit!"

  • "Although I would recommend Roy's to anyone year round, it is especially great to celebrate a special occasion there. The staff is extremely accommodating and the food is always top-notch."

  • "I have eaten at several Roy's locations, I wanted to share this experience with my wife and 3 friends. What a nice surprise it was to discover that the restaurant was adjacent to our hotel and overlooking the harbor. We were seated promptly. And our server, Daniel, was excellent from beginning to end. His explanations and recommendations were very helpful. The food was all wonderfully prepared, presented and served. We needed 3 separate checks, which Daniel handled easily along with a Roy's gift card. All in all, it was a great dining experience."

  • "At Roy's, the food is always delish...but this downtown location is just odd. It just feels like it's designed for a corporate party and no matter how lovely the meal, the energy is just wrong. Maybe the best way to combat it is to sit outdoors?"

  • "We celebrated my husband's birthday here on March 6, 2014. The scene and atmosphere was very great. The Lobster popstickers are a must have. My only complaint was that a very loud party of about 16 people came during the middle of our evening and it was very hard to hear. I just wish we were a little more separated from large parties."

  • "Unlike most night...this night was a bad one for Roy's . Our party orders the steamed mussels and they arrived to the table cold. The manager tried his best to make things right by bringing a FRESH batch that was hot and brought some potstickers for the table to make up for the error. Everyone's dinner came and the fish dishes were exceptional. I made the mistake of ordering the usually juicy short ribs. This night they came so tough that I couldn't cut them with a steak knife instead of the fork tender ribs that have always come before. Both pieces were dry and tough. I called the waiter back and he was apologetic and brought me another dinner... and while the second one was better...it was not up to the standards of Roy's. So sad"

  • "I like this location much better than La Jolla. It has such a nice feeling, great ambience, delicious food, beautiful view. Nothing negative to say. We will go back!"

  • "I expect excellence in quality of food, service, and atmosphere when dining at the more expensive restaurants. Roy's on the marina was lackluster in all areas."

  • "Pricey but good food, service and right on the harbour."

  • "You can't beat the dining experience of sitting outside at Roy's by the fire pit with the fresh air and stars in the sky as far as you can see. The sushi rolls that Roy's serves are the best in town. The service from Josh, server slash bartender is right on with product knowledge and a great sense of humor. Josh, the Manager, makes sure everyone is happy. My wife and I just love this place and look forward to going back time after time!"

  • "...just not what I expected. I was hoping to find a restaurant with hawaiin influenced cuisine but without the cheesey tiki bar feel. The only thing hawaiin was the poke which they didn't even have that evening. The waiter was very good at upselling the drinks (I asked for tap and got Fij.) Filet mignon was well marinated and butter poached lobster was very good. I enjoyed the lobster gyoza and pork belly dumplings. The ambience is nice, and though they say they validate parking, there was no attendant in the lot and we ended up paying $16 for parking anyway. Overall a good restaurant, I had just expected less big city atmosphere."

  • "I took my wife and sister in law for dinner and even though this night was a set menu the food was great, our waitress was professional and courteous. Over all a great meal and the view from upstairs was gorgeous."

  • "Overall, always like Roy's for food preparation, imagination, and service. This was a sub - par evening. The waiter messed up the wine order and brought a Pilot instead of a Cab, then took 15-20 minutes to fix his mistake. Then, wife's so called Butterfish was baby food mush, overcooked and my peppercorn crusted Ribeye was a big pile of gristle and connected tissue....could not eat. To be fair, the apps and desert were great, but entrees were a big dropkick. Mentioned the problem to server, but he just brushed it off. Net, still like Roy's but for +$300.00 for 2 people, expect more for sure....."

  • "We had dinner here on valentines day. It was perfect. The bay front view at sunset was amazing. The meals and the service was fantastic and the entire experience could not have been better. They even gave my date a rose. What a nice touch."

  • "We have been to Roy's a few times (different locations around the country) and have always enjoyed it, but the San Diego location fell short. When we arrived, the hostess started complaining about her day as she was seating us which was a bit awkward. She then proceeded to sit us at a table that was in a corner that was away from all views and looked like it was a temporary setup where a coat rack would normally be. It was a little odd to be seated there, when there was a large number of open tables. The food was quite good, except that the steak was cooked rare instead of medium well. Meanwhile, the table next to us had the wrong desserts brought out."

  • "Packed and noisy, probably from so many conventions in town at the same time. Food consistently good nonetheless, always enjoy the menu options at any location in Hawaii or California, though most others are quieter and more relaxing. Can't you guys open one up in New York City?? I'll put up with the noise."

  • "We have visited Roy's at several locations and every one was excellent. Our server, Daniel L, was beyond excellent. He guided us thru cocktail, wine and menu choices with a light but very professional touch. We really enjoyed having him as our server. Every server should strive to be like him."

  • "I consider myself a foodie, and although the food was tasty and the portions were all the right size, Roy's is your standard high-priced, ocean-front, well-established restaurant. You can't go wrong, but if you are looking for a taste bud sensation or fabulous kitchen creations, look elsewhere. We ordered the canoe as an appetizer, two of Roy's trio as the main meal, and one lava cake for dessert. With two drinks each, one coffee with dessert, our tab with tip came out to just under $170. We got the prime booth location in the restaurant, looking right toward the sunset. The restaurant never felt packed, but by 5:30 nearly every seat was taken. The waitress was very attentive with quiet passbys, and it was appreciated."

  • "It was a special occasion for me and my friends. It was our birthdays. They made it special by giving us some curled ribbons and adding extra desserts. The food was amazing. You must get the ahi poke. It was not too sweet and not too salty. It was just the right amount of flavor. The entree that I got was the scallops and the flavor was good. I wished they cooked it a little longer cuz I usually like mines more well done. But overall... The staff was knowledgeable about the food and very friendly. Just a side note... You can valet in the front of Marriott hotel. They have a walkway that will lead you to the restaurant. It's not a far walk."

  • "Right on the harbor, fresh seafood served in a classic or fusion style, you can't go wrong with Roy's. You pay a premium for the brand but your food will always be satisfying and tasty. This restaurant, located at the Marriott Hotel near the convention center, is the perfect stop for visiting business people, convention-eers, tourists and locals alike. Escape the crowd at Seaport Village and sit outside in the San Diego sun, watching the boats come in and out of the harbor, and enjoy So Cal seaside dining in a fun and more casual setting. Bon Appetit! And try the butterfish...."

  • "The staff was welcoming, gave us a great table with a view and took care of our entire family. The menu included a special appetizer for our daughter and that kept her busy while we looked over the menu. EXCELLENT view of the San Diego Bay. Would love to go there and try out the non-holiday menu."

  • "We've dined at Roy's restaurants in various locations, and all have been consistently good. The food, service, and ambiance are generally very good--though the Vegas location doesn't have the spectacular view of the Ko'Olina site. The San Diego location is right on the marina, very convenient if staying downtown (it's actually on the Marriott Marquis property), and the setting is comfortable and relaxed while still feeling special. The butterfish is excellent; we also loved the chocolate souffle cake--very yummy."

  • "Dinner started with beef carpaccio which was perfectly thin and so tasty and salmon rolls rolled in tempura. Delicious! Followed by lobster tails and scallops. Lobster was perfect and while the scallops were cooked perfectly, only 3 on the plate with the tiniest potatoes I've ever seen in my life. All this followed by the most perfect chocolate soufflé. Great way to usher in the New Year."

  • "We had a table with a view. The food was good (smaller menu for the holiday). The service could have been a little better, our waiter seemed new, but it was only 7PM, so we were not in a hurry."

  • "The manager needs to know about customer service, the service offered by the waiter was outstanding but the manager awefully rude."

  • "The restaurant is very nice inside. The decor and ambience is very nice. Although I did not go to the bar it appeared to be a full bar and had a very nice look and appeal to it. The service by the staff was excellent, everyone was polite and friendly and made me feel welcome. As for the food, it was so so. I ordered Roy's Classic Trio (salmon, mahi mahi, butterfish) at the cost of $33.95. I was expecting at least a decent portion of food, but what I received was a golf ball sized portion of each fish. The salmon was well prepared and flavorful, the mahi mahi was ok, but the butterfish had a texture of soggy bread. Other menu items may be better than what I got, I left there still hungry and had to go somewhere else to get satisfied."

  • "Beaut setting with bay views. Rap enjoyed since we no longer have Roy's in our area. Canoe appetizer was great and good value. Assorted yummy things. Good variety. I had ahi entree but was a bit disappointed that it wad t the sliced version with sesame seeds that they used to have. Chocolate soufflé for dessert was also very good."

  • "The Open Table website gave us very earl or very late choices, when the restaurant wasn't even booked that night and could have easily accommodated our preferred time - what's up with that? BUt the restaurant, the food, service and ambiance were wonderful."

  • "We had made reservation at Roys since we were at a convention and on a schedule. We arrived on time and asked if a table with a view was available. After a few minutes the hostess shuttled us into the bar area. We later learned that the the bar was open seating. We were with a friend and planned to catch up during dinner. The bar area quickly became crowded and noisy. Conversation was difficult. Our server was nice but took longer than we hoped. Other people came in after and were served before us. The food was very good. The fish was nicely prepared. The tempora vegetables were very tasty."

  • "They always do a great job here and be sure to try the "Three Fish Dinner". It is a good variety, not to large yet plenty of food. If you want to look out yet be comfortable get a booth rather than the window tables."
