Diner Reviews
  • "Had an amazing dinner w. my daughter who turned 18! The Restaurant printed a Happy 18th Message in the Menu just for us. What a classy touch! We were so touched and impressed by it. Then the food is hot and yummy too! The chocolate lava cake is to die for. Love this Restaurant for sure."

  • " I wanted to take my dear friend out for a nice dinner, but not impressed. Had heard good things. However, for a $100 tab, I expect more than 1 cup of pasta with 4 medium, overcooked shrimp, with the shells still on and a glass of okay wine. If the pasta had some extraordinary flavoring or the shrimp was perfectly cooked, it would still be uber expensive...the pasta was a flat overcooked fettucine-type noodle. To add to expense, valet parking was $6.00 (not including the tip), and my car was literally less than 20 steps away from the valet podium...Wow! I am willing to pay for a good meal, just getting tired of the boring-overpriced food around OC."

  • "Our waitstaff was excellent-friendly, knowledgable and attentive. The room we were seated in was too cold. I'm not usually one to complain, but we could not be moved so they kept saying they would turn down the ac but, of course, it would always get turned back up. Kind of ruins your evening to be shivering. The appetizers were good, shorts ribs and lobster ravioli. But my dinner, steak and lobster, was dry and over cooked. The steak was very gristly and the lobster was just 3-4 bites. I would not recommend it to a friend, and we all went away thinking it was over-rated."

  • "Great food. Great atmosphere. The cuisine is pretty unique for stateside offerings. Everything was very tasty. Most of the crowd of seven ordered seafood and seemed very pleased with the results. Service was good."

  • "Use to be a great place with consistent food. The service & atmosphere remain very good but the food quality and consistency has been poor for the last 3 visits -- a continual decline in food freshness, seasoning, etc. We were served stale/old fish & even the guy that delivered it watched to see how our reaction to the smell and appearance of several dishes. They did remove 2 obviously spoiled items from our bill. We eat high end food & do not mind paying for it when it is good - an average of $100+ per person is typical. The appetizers (3) and four entrees were marginal at best. The drinks were good - hard to mess wine and standard mixed drinks. The deserts (3) were the best part of the meal."

  • "The food and service is always good at this location. Enjoyed the Steak and Lobster tail combo. Also like the Sunday special Short Rib/Butter Fish Combo Will keep coming back."

  • "I've been coming here for a couple years now. I have never had a bad meal. The staff is the best I have ever seen. Be sure to come early to enjoy their happy hour and you MUST have the chocolate soufflee"

  • "Lovely quiet booth, good servers. The Cesar salad was garlicky and very good. The macadamia encrusted mahi with lobster creme sauce could have packed a little more flavor but the piece of fish was fresh and generous. The seared ahi with wasabi was excellent. Next time I'll have that."

  • "Everything was most satisfactory. the food was great and exactly what our waitperson, Haley, said it would be, no disappointments. We were going on to the theater and all went very smooth. I'll return again."

  • "The restaurant continues to maintain great food and a wonderful presentation since being sold by Yamaguchi to a large restaurant chain. The Newport Beach restaurant is probably the best overall Roy's in So Cal."

  • "We had the 2 course Lobster tail and filet mignon special and it was good. The disappointing part was that we were there to celebrate my husband's birthday. The waitress took a picture of the entire party. The usual thing was to print the picture and present to us with the Roy's picture holder. The waitress never did and we forgot about that. Once we got home, I called the restaurant and see whether I can pick up the photo the next day. The hostess took my cell and said they will check and call me back. It is 5 days later now and no one has called. I was bummed because that's the only picture with the entire party."

  • "I ordered an item from the Chef's menu, highly recommended by the server. I cautioned him that I like my fish nicely seared on the outside, but cooked medium at most, flaky and moist. He assured me that would be the case. When I got the fish, it was hard as a rock. So he brought me a different dish, mushy butterfish, but by then my wife has already finished eating. And I got charged for the slightly more expensive second order, not the first. We will not be back."

  • "Always great service, loved the butter fish. Order the chocolate suffle early, as it can take about 20 minutes for them to make."

  • "You are never disappointed when done at Roy's. The fish is always prepared the way you like it. Nothing is over cooked."

  • "The service, at best was fair, but the food really needs to get back to the basics of Roy's and the original menus. Roy's will not be on our list of restaurants to visit again."

  • "We dine here at least once or twice a month and the food and service are always great. We went for brunch, but wound up ordering off the non-brunch menu. This is a nice way to go if you want fish or beef, which were not on the brunch menu. Appetizers of Ebi roll and potstickers were good, miso butter fish and short ribs also great. Topped off with the chocolate lava cake with ice cream."

  • "I've been here several times, and its great every time I come here. Their happy house is great too. The food is always fresh and perfectly cooked. It's a little pricey but worth it. Usually I wait for them to have a special before going to help out on the pocketbook"

  • "Celebrating our daughter's birthday and graduation so I was hoping the restaurant wouldn't disappoint and it didn't! Roy's has been a destination restaurant for us on vacations and special occasions but recently we were getting a little disappointed (bored) with the menu selections except for the chocolate soufflé of course so the variety of menu choices here were fantastic! We had the black cod, the scallops, filet mignon, the fish trio, and the crab and fish chef special. All was excellent. My daughter appreciated the birthday dessert! Thank you Roy's for a memorable evening!!!"

  • "We celebrated a family members 50th birthday party. Food was delicious, service wonderful & they did special treats for the children. I highly recommend Roy's for celebrations or just a romantic dinner for two. One of my favorite restaurants."

  • "We simply love Roy's and enjoy every meal there. The new Swordfish and Calamari are awesome. Never turn down a chance to eat soufflé for dessert!"

  • " The cocktails at Roy's are outstanding. Scallops were a special and two of us had them but didn't love the risotto with it. I had the Lobster pot pie which was just ok compared to the other dishes. I wanted to try something new and was a bit disappointed because although the portion was large it was filled with potatoes and not enough lobster. Everyone else had delicious dishes. The short ribs, butter fish, salmon, lobster/filet combo all outstanding. Their rolls for apps were outstanding. We ordered 5! Ending with a couple of lava flows and two pineapple cakes and one bread pudding for dessert completed the night. It was quite an expensive evening but worth it."

  • "We began our evening in the bar for the Aloha Hour. The appetizers were good, but I would never pay more than half price ($6.00). Portions were small. Although the service was good, someone in our party burned their finger on the extremely hot plate that was placed in front of him, without being told not to touch the plate. At a restaurant like this, you would expect to be told of something like that. Food was mediocre. Ordered the macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi with a cream lobster sauce. Had to order an extra side of lobster sauce due to the dry and flavorless fish. My husband ordered the seared ahi, it was much better. Chocolate Peanut Butter lava cake was better than anything else. I hate to write a poor review, but I must be honest. "

  • "We've been to several Roy's throughout the years and this is probably the most disappointed we've ever been. The appetizer "canoe for two" was almost inedible - the shrimp was dry, cold and tasteless. I couldn't finish my mahi mahi entree because it was so dry - the waiter even asked me if I wanted more sauce - my only thought at the time was that he knew it couldn't be eaten without sauce! Complete waste of time and money. We won't be going back to any Roy's for a very long time."

  • "Dined at Roy's Newport Beach on the evening of Tuesday, May 27th. The purpose of this dinner was a small business meeting with 5 other people. The service was great, the ambience was nice, and overall the food was excellent. The pineapple dessert and the butterfish special are worth trying. I would dine here again. "

  • "We return again and again to Roy's in Newport Beach. We always get our requested table. The wait staff is professional yet friendly. They have recently changed the menu and added a few more entrees and specials. The fish is always outstanding."

  • "We have been to Roy's many times and almost always come here for our anniversary. The food is good (not great) and the service is superb but it can be pricey. Even though the restaurant was mostly full it was not noisy. We ordered the mahi-mahi and it was kind of bland. A must have is the chocolate sufle for desert; we were also served a nice desert (complimentary) for our anniversary. "

  • "The restaurant has taken on the feel of a chain restaurant that is trying to still live off of a once good reputation. "

  • "We've been dining at Roy's for years and always have an excellent experience from service through food. This time around we tried 2 of the rolls -- scallop and one other; they were both delicious. For entrees the butterfish and a new dish, the scallops with pork belly. For dessert, the chocolate souffle, which is always a favorite. We took a bottle of Pinot Noir and the corkage was minimal. "

  • "This was our 3rd time going to Roy's. First 2 times were exceptional, food was excellent. This time I got the crusted mai-mai. There was not much flavor and the fish was somewhat dry. Not quite what we expected for a $30 entree. The service was excellent. They are extremely attentive to your needs. We will try them again, but next time we will be a bit more careful about what we order."

  • "The food at Roy's is always good. This location however is designed so that any time anyone needs to deliver food, go to the restroom, be seated ... They have to walk past your table. The table arrangement felt like we were having to look at the people across the very busy aisle way too much. "

  • "Went for mother's day.....food took a long time before it was delivered to our table. I guess that's normal for this particular day. Staff was friendly and always checking up on us. Dishes were OK. Nothing with a big "wow" factor. The carrot cake dessert was very good but the chocolate soufflé was more like a molten chocolate cake. It wasn't fluffy and airy, but more rich and saucy. Total time from start to finish on appetizers, entree and dessert was 2 hours."

  • "Once decided where we were going, I checked with Open Table to see if we could make a reservation. I made the reservation , one day ahead, and they had the perfect time- 2:15. Made the reservation, and it was confirmed in no time. My husband and I have been to one other Roy's, in Oahu, Hawaii , and he already knew what he wanted- braised short ribs. Of the 4 of us there, 3 of us had the short ribs. The food was sooo good!,"

  • "The service at Roy's is consistent with the price, but the food is not. I had the blackened ahi tuna. It was cooked perfectly, but the sauce and spices were rather bland and common. Nothing special. The server made a big deal out of ordering the pineapple upside down cake early on in the meal, so that it could be could be baked especially for us. It was served hot and seemed fresh out of the oven, but it was very ordinary. I ordered the Almond panna cotta to go. It was awful. Inedible. So overall, I'd not recommend Roy's."

  • "I like Roy's because I can always choose from the menu (which is standard across the USA).... OR I can choose from the first page. The first page always has special creations from the local chef. This time, I did a little of both. I got a "standard" appetizer (sushi roll) and also selected the chef's spicy Barramundi. Both were delicious. Service is always good here. ENJOY!"
