A word from Rosa Mexicano - San Francisco
In 1984, Rosa Mexicano set a new standard for Mexican cuisine when it first opened in New York City. Playing a leading role in defining what was then a "new" cuisine to American diners, Rosa Mexicano delivers authentic Mexican cooking in an accessible, stylishly festive atmosphere. Rosa Mexicano"s menu features a range of award-winning signature dishes, including our Guacamole en Molcajete, prepared in a traditional lava rock mortar. Described by Time Out New York as "green ecstasy in a stone bowl," it is prepared table side and served with house made chips, warm corn tortillas and condiment salsas. Rosa Mexicano is also known for the Frozen Pomegranate Margarita, as well as the stylish and festive ambiance that includes our dramatic 15 ft. water wall.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first visit to Rosa Mexicano and it exceeded my expectations! The restaurant is lively, the menu has something for everyone, and the tableside guacamole was delicious! Friendly and courteous wait staff: they explained the menu, offered suggestions and were attentive to our needs. We were very pleased with overall service and will definitely go back."

  • "Ambience is great, bar scene was lively. Dinner was mediocre, heavy cheese on chicken, no flavor. Steak looked good but tasted like charcoal. however the churros were amazing! go for a drink or the churros but elsewhere to eat."

  • "It was my third visit to Rosa Mexicano. The moment my guest and I entered in the doors everyone was very friendly and pleasant. On my third dining experience one of my guest had never been to the restaurant and by the time we left she said she would definitely return for another for another dining experience. Food and service was awesome as always! I anticipate my fourth dining experience soon!"

  • "then you will enjoy your meal if you stay with the house specials... the guacamole table side is a treat and must have. However, don't dine here for lunch if you are in a hurry... wait for entrees can take a long time even when they are not so busy."

  • "Food: Started with the made to order at your table guacamole- absolutely fantastic and great smoked chipotle and green salsa on the side! Ceviche tacos were the best tacos of the night. If you like truffle oil you'll love these! We had the shrimp tacos and carnitas tacos for dinner with mexican style corn on the cobb. The corn was delicious but the shrimp and pork tacos were kind of bland in flavor. THE CHURROS!!- Best I've ever had. Would go back just for these. SERVICE: Impeccable. The gentleman who made our guacamole was so friendly and our server gave GREAT recommendations specifically with our tequila flight. Shared stories about the history of tequila and was very informative and entertaining. Great ambiance too!"

  • "This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Bay and definitely top in San Francisco. The pomegranate margaritas are the bomb and that table side prepared guacamole will send you through the roof."

  • "We used our Gilt City offer. The food was delicious and we were quite full by the end that we did not finish dessert. Thank you for hosting a great deal!"

  • "Service was incredibly slow. Waiter continually disappeared. Had to ask the busser serveral times to have our waiter come back to our table. It took at least 20 minutes for two Iced Teas to arrive. The food arrived after a 40 minute wait, and one dish arrived cold. Before making the reservation I noted reviews which also described the slow service. I thought certainly after seeing these reviews, the management would have rectified this complaint. We went in with a fresh expectation for good food and at least reasonably timely service. Unfortunately, the long wait, the continual disappearance of our waiter, and food arriving cold only confirmed previous reviews. What can one say about a restaurant which apparantly just doesn't care?"

  • "Recently my employer has planned several lunch time celebrations for staff members. Each time we've needed to work with group reservations and because of the ease of booking and planning with them, this has become my company's go to spot. Many employees, as a result of attending company outings, have frequently used this restaurant as a lunch or after hours spot. The service is great and the churros are to die for. Fantastic!"

  • "Great spot for birthday dinner with friends. Fun, festive atmosphere, table side guac = yum. Portions were perfectly sized, we all got tacos and enjoyed them."

  • "My new office team treated me to a welcome lunch on Fri. 6/13/14 and we had a wonderful. Our head count increased by 3 people which was more then the original reservation was for. The hostesses and wait staff quickly added an additional table and had all of us seated in less than 5 minutes. Our watress was freindly, fast and knowledgable about the menu as well as what types of ingredients were used. The table side guacamole preparation was made quickly and the end result was enjoyed by everyone. Only positive comments on our individual meals and everyone was happy and full when we left. I plan on going back and felt it was an all around great experience. Being located a 2 blocks away from my office and the Ferry Building is perfect."

  • "The food was good. Our server was not attentive and we often had to flag him down in order to order more drinks or refills on our water."

  • "Good was good but a little pricey. Service not too good. Took so long to get food that I had to get some to go as we were headed Giants game and was there over hour. Never got my Shrimp Ceviche and was charged! Guacamole was awesome!"

  • "Seated quickly, but with no menus. Once we had menus, it was another long wait to order. From the time we were seated, to the time we got our food was almost 40 minutes. Had to eat quickly to make a meeting. 1 hour lunch is not long enough if you don't want to rush."

  • "Had great food and great service. Loved the guacamole bowls."

  • "Making a reservation was difficult. I reserved for 6 people originally, then 4 more wanted to come. Can't do through OT; called resto. Can't do it with front desk; have to email "catering manager" who was not there at the time. My email bounced back. Called again. Finally got it changed. Then, when we got there, service was similar: waiter was inattentive and slow. Food was nice, though, and if you don't mind a l-o-n-g lunch, it's great."

  • "Overall excellent food. Quite pricey for Mexican esp if you are an SF native who frequents the Mission but the quality is high and very fresh. Service was fine and friendly - though inconvenient i.e. you can't order happy hour stuff and then sit down to dinner and add that to your whole check. You have to close out the check for happy hour and then start another bill inside. A hassle and not customer friendly. "

  • "The food, service and ambiance at Rosa Mexicana is great. I think I eat here almost once a month and my favorite meal has been the crunch lunch. You get (well, you DID get) a nice assortment of their specialties: a little guacamole, a small cup of soup, a taco and flan. No more! The $19 two-course is both too much food and not enough variety. This has been my go-to place in the neighborhood since they opened, but if there's no crunch lunch, I'm not as interested."

  • "Took a friend out to lunch to Rosa Mexicano. We were promptly seated at the time of our reservations. Waiter was attentive and friendly. There was a delay with our food and everyone else's when the restaurant was experiencing problems with their grill. So, the wait time on our food was longer than usual. Overall, the food and service has been great each time I've visited. It's a great place for a nice lunch or special occasion."

  • "Service good. For the price entrees are so so. Guacamole was good, but a pinch of salt and some lime juice would have made it super. Having lived in Mexico even the street food was tastier than Rosa Mexicano. Was looking forward to the flan. What a big disappointment! "

  • "2nd visit; sat outside, server approached us right away; ordered lunch then never saw anyone after that. The mexican salad was WAY too spicy, couldn't eat it and I like spice! I needed water, tried to get the busboys attention, he hit every table exept our with water, I had to get it myself from the water station. We had to flag down someone for a check, we gave feedback on the entree being too spicy; the manager came over and apologized and comped us the entire meal, not expecting it but glad she did. I just wanted a nice meal at lunch (work in an office and never go out) but will never return."

  • "Although there was 7 of us, the service was very slow. We waited over 45 minutes to get our food. By the time we were done, we weren't even offered a dessert menu, just the the bill."

  • "Opentable reservations are always a challenge. If people in my party arrives before I do, they are never seated under my reservation and thus my opentable reservations are always categorized as no-shows. I even put everyone's name under the notes section. Has happened the last 6 reservations. Why make a reservation if it is always rejected?!"

  • "Delighted that we were seated exactly at our reservation time - had an excellent table (booth) which made it easy to have a conversation. Service very good and we were not rushed."

  • "There are few good Mexican restaurants in the financial district and this is a good addition. At your table preparation of guacamole is pricey, but very good. Black beans, and rice for the table, a roasted veggie taco was quite good and filling for vegetarian/vegans. My companions enjoyed several dishes from the soup to salad to mole and all were reported to be tasty. No room for dessert. Excellent and attentive service."

  • "Go for the great margaritas and stay away from the food."

  • "I was here for a simple 4-course dinner, but it took over 2 hours to serve everything. The food was hit-or-miss overall, but nothing too amazing. I don't mind paying extra for better quality ingredients and ambiance, but I thought this just wasn't worth it. They do have decent happy hour options so I think I'd come back for that. The service was unbelievably slow...in reading other reviews it's pretty consistent, but I don't understand why it would continue to be a problem. The restaurant must realize that it's an issue, but it apparently still hasn't been dealt with since we received extremely slow service. Our server also seemed to not care too much that we were waiting so long between each course."

  • "I love Mexican food, but this place does not have the menu to back it up. Only tacos and Enchiladas. No Tamales, and No Chile Rellanos. Their sauce for chips is really weak, BUT if you love guacamole, there's is amazing."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "OK, I admit that I haven't been to many other Mexican restaurants in San Francisco recently, however, I can say that in terms of experience eating at Mexican restaurants over my lifetime, Rosa Mexicano is very near to the top of the list. The water wall's body language clearly whispers "dive in"! We loved the tableside guacamole, the note-perfect unconstructed lobster enchilada, and our inventive margaritas, labeled "Classic" and "Traditional" took us far beyond the suggested implications. For utterly delicious Mexican food in a supremely elegant setting, Rosa Mexicano is as good as it gets!"

  • "If you are looking for "upscale" Mexican - this is a great place. I'd been once before for lunch and it was very good - food, service, everything. This time we went for dinner and again it was spot on. Crab enchiladas are awesome and the grilled fish was fresh and tender and delish, Just two small complaints...They don't put any lemon or lime in the guacamole when they make it at the table and when we asked for some lime they brought us 2 skinny wedges on the rim of a glass (drink garnish!) - and we waited longer for our desserts to come than we did for the main course. The waiter apologized but there was no explanation (the restaurant was less than half full) - I'm still coming back again !!"

  • "I have always made reservations for the lunch hour and the restaurant gets busy! The reception staff is always polite and they give you an immediate sense of what is going on. Once at the table, the wait staff shows up quickly to provide introductions and take drink orders. I recommend the sangria as a very refreshing, tasteful afternoon drink. The table side guacamole preparation is always a crowd pleaser and it's delicious! The tortilla pie is my favorite dish. Flavorful and hearty! I've also had the ceviche and artisanal tacos, also delish! The atmosphere is lively and the cliff jumper water feature along the dining room wall is aesthetically pleasing. I approve of Rosa Mexicano and I return, again and again!"

  • "Yes, the guacamole was good, but that was the highlight. I ordered the trio of ceviche. After an hour the plate came out and it was a disgrace to ceviche. I had to hunt for the seafood. To top it all off I was given saltines on the side. SALTINES, the crackers you eat when you are ill and can't hold anything down. Do not go."
