  • "This restaurant is a refreshing, superb change from the typical New Orleans cuisine. The plates are nutritious, delicious, and exquisitely presented. And the location is tucked away yet close to the convention center (5 minutes walking). The root vegetable salad is the best vegetables I've ever had (and I'm spoiled by San Francisco produce!); the salmon beet salad is just as beautiful on the plate as on the palette; the scallops come smoking in a cigar box--a creatively divine dining experience. Plus the menu offers twists on more standard fare--fried chicken with awesome yam-like butter; a hamburger that will solve red meat cravings. And don't forget the dessert menu. Wow--it's a whole other dining experience in itself. "

  • "MY wife and I together with another couple recently had our first dining experience at Root. The server described the menu as "ambiguous," an apt description. But there was nothing ambiguous about the food. Unpredictable maybe. It was all about inventive and attractively presented flavor combinations. This is not comfort food. I would not go to Root every week. But I hope to go again and again whenever I want a delicious surprise."

  • "The meal was very good. The vegetables were done to perfection. The lamb was tender. The only drawback was that the waitress seemed a bit unfriendly. To complicate matters when she took our order she did not hear that we had ordered a main course. We eventually asked her about it and instead of saying that there was a misunderstanding, implied that we had not ordered it. The waiter who helped us was very nice and provided us with advice abut the desserts."

  • "One of the best new restaurants in NOLA! This was my 4th time dining at Root, and it just keeps getting better. Their menu is unique and unlike any other I have seen. Everything is made fresh in house and has a creative twist that really makes you appreciate the creativity and presentation. I haven't been disappointed with anything I've tried, and usually the highly knowledgeable staff's recommendations are spot on! Can't wait to return again on my next visit."

  • "The food was very good. We had the black laquer duck and the cigar box scallops. The scallops were delicious and the duck was tasty but unfortunately the piece I ate was terribly gamey. The server was very knowledgeable. The space was not what I was expecting, more upscale cafeteria than the intimate atmosphere I had envisioned (don't know why I thought that) but it was fun and funky with cool chairs. The reason for the 4 instead of five stars is because the menu is rather fancy/complicated in its descriptions and ingredients. All good but I wasn't sure what most foods were."

  • "I can totally respect the labor and artistic ability to produce food such as this but one needs to be educated a bit. When we arrived the restaurant was empty. The woman greeting us was not friendly at all. We had to encourage anyone to give us attention. The service was extremely slow. I probably would not return. There is so much great food in New Orleans at a more reasonable price. The menu caterers to foodies only,"

  • "We had an excellent meal. The chorizo, pate and prosciutto were outstanding. The scallops in a cigar box were very good. One mild issue is that the wine list could use more medium priced bottles. The list is interesting but off putting. Also, for the price level, the decor is more lunchtime than fine dining. Dimming the lights would help. A nice addition would be a fresh greens salad. The one vegetarian salad option was pickled. Overall, the food was very different, the presentation was terrific, and we enjoyed ourselves immensely."

  • "Roots is a French Quarter "slice of heaven". The dishes were memorable, with creative, contemporary twists. The wait staff truly is knowledgeable about the menu and the "top-notch wine list". Our wait staff delivered our meals to the table with grace and thorough preparation explanations. The food is fun, ( I had scallops served in a cigar box, my wife had the duck- both delicious ) the menu choices unusual, the presentation exquisite. The setting and mood was "charming old brick cottage". This restaurant is great for a "special occasion" or a "surprisingly reasonable upscale dinner", it's "not to be missed.""

  • "Foodies rejoice...if you're tired of bad Cajun seafood, dirty rice and greasy fried fish, go to Root. What a revelation. Sausage and charcuterie dishes come with incredible mix of pickled vegetables, home-made flavored mustard, delicious relishes and marmalade-type mini salads and flat bred to scoop it all up in a series of wonderfully tasty bites. Main dishes are equally relish, especially the cohiba smoked scallops. That dish alone is worth the trip. By far the best scallops I have EVER had. I'm not going to spoil the surprise but the presentation and seasoning are crazy good. Bar is a nice plus...runs the length of the back of the restaurant and has great selection of whisky, locally brewed beer. Went back three times in four days!"

  • "I was visiting NOLA for a conference and recommended to the restaurant which was very conveniently located near the convention center. I was initially pleased with the place as menu was very creative. However when I got the bill, I noticed that the waiter added 20% tips (20 % of total bill including taxed) on the bill. There were only three of us and it has no mention of adding tips on the menu. I questioned the waiter and he was very rude and said that they add tips always. I was going to tip him 25% as I normally do, but I was very turned off by his arrogant attitude. He really put a damper on otherwise great dining experience."

  • "I had the menage a foie. It was interesting, but I'm not sure it was worth $25. We also had a bahn mi. It was not a bahn mi and was expensive (for a bahn mi). Service was very very slow even though the restaurant was empty. We may go back to have charcuterie, which I heard is excellent, but perhaps not."

  • "The menu was not your typical New Orleans fare, but was very unique and imaginative. The scallops in the cigar box were fantastic as was the face bacon. Actually every item we ordered was fantastic!! The service was excellent also. The only downside was the very small glasses of wine they serve. All in all, I'd highly recommend it."

  • "Went here twice, late night, to sit at the bar and order small plates and charcuterie. In town for a week and enjoying the city with old friends, we wound up skipping dinners for music and needed a place to eat, late, when we were done with entertainment. Great cocktails, wonderful bartender (scott?) who was friendly but not intrusive and guided us on many good drink and food choices. ordered from Charcuterie menu and the fried chicken. all the food was wonderful, and it is very pleasant to dine like this after a night of loud music clubs"

  • "We researched quite a bit before our 48 hour trip to NOLA and stumbled across this restaurant. We loved the Fois Gras w/ Cotton Candy and Pop Rocks. Also the fish bowl appetizer which is very confusing to eat and possibly not a good sharing item if you are not a fan of sharing germs! We were forced to eat the brothy fish bowl (it doesn't have fish in it) with forks & ended up drinking it straight from the bowl since we didn't understand how else we were supposed to eat it! The duck was our favorite entree and we tried many items. We were a party of 5 that shared everything. We saved room for dessert which is a must! Very creative menu. The server was phenomenal & guided us through the menu, had to wait a long time for drinks at one point."

  • "Root has a very well described menu of interesting dishes. All 5 entrees at our table were as advertised both in terms of composition and taste. Also well presented. The only complaint was the seating. We were situated on a cushioned bench that put us at a lower spot than optimal for eating relative to table height. It didn't affect the overall event, but did start things off a little less than optimal."

  • "Do order the creative Social plates to share. The house-made sausages, meats, and pickled fruit and vegetables are tasty, inventive, and unique. However, be sure to order them on separate plates. We had done this one evening and were delighted, but when we came for lunch, the server suggested that we have them on one board for space on the table. Unfortunately, as a result, we were served about a third of the total portion (compared to separate plates) of pickled vegetables, condiments (home made strawberry mustard, a jam/relish, etc) and lavash crackers. We requested and received more lavash crackers (after quite a wait and still less than appropriate). Too expensive for what we got and we left unsatisfied."

  • "With a multitude of unusual ocured meat options, Root will make you think outside the box. The fare kind of reminds me of a cooking competition where all the stops are pulled out to be unusual. We enjoyed the beef heart that was recommended -- especially the the pickled local veggies and personal tube of mustard. I had the duck entree, which was too salty, and my husband had the lamb, which was not memorable. Didn't see anything intriguing for dessert, so we had a wonderful soufflé at Emerils."

  • "I live in New Orleans, but was completely in the dark about Root. I stumbled on it when I was trying to find a reservation for out-of-town friends during a huge convention. But I love farm-to-table, snout-to-tail, pick-your-cliche restaurants and this one did not disappoint. It's definitely a place to try things, to test your own palate. I have a very middlebrow wine palate, but I happily availed myself o the waiter's suggestions. I would prefer to give 4.5 stars and I feel I should add the context that I've eaten at some of the world's best restaurants."

  • "Nice, kitchy little place this Root. They are serving things like crispy pig's ears and duck hearts, but we were fixated on their Charcuterie, which was a ton of flavor in Black Pepper Lonza that we ordered. They have a great way of thinking outside of the box, as well as serving within one. My scallop dinner was served on a liner within a cigar box, with a gentle smoking from cigar smoke, introduced to the box and then covered at that last second. All around, it was validation of "different" and provided well thought out surprises through the meal. Service levels were exemplary."

  • "In a sea of creole cooking that is most of New Orleans establishments, it is good to see such restaurants like "Root" to take hold in the ever expanding culinary front within this great city. Every bite, presentation is exciting and intriguingly executed with obvious thought to be both playful and innovative. The caliber of the food does not match its sub-par venue setting, the plastic chairs and super low sofas takes away some what from the overall experience. Nevertheless, the waiters are well informed and knowledgeable in their bringing and the experience should be worth while for the culinary adventurous. Not recommended for an romantic date."

  • "I have to admit, I get bored with restaurants, and it is wonderful to visit somewhere like root with fascinating products, ingredients, and flavor combinations. The key, though, it's not inventive for the sake of being pretentious, this is really good food with a myriad of complimentary flavor and textures. We had CBD, pork belly, and pig ear salad for starters - all three were phenomenal, particularly the pork belly. Then molasses glazed duck and scallops for the entree - both good but not quite as amazing as the first course. Bubble wrap chocolate with flower less chocolate cake. . .why go through the trouble of using a bubble wrap as a mold? It really does make the most fantastic texture. All in all a really good, interesting meal."

  • "After almost a year away from New Orleans, I went back to ROOT for dinner last week. The restaurant is still outstanding. In a city with many excellent dining options, ROOT is one of the very best. The food is surprising, delicious, fun, and original. The service is always friendly, enthusiastic, and very knowledgable. The wine list is excellent, varied, and priced very fairly. The bone marrow, Cohiba smoked scallops, and fois gras options are among my favorite things to eat in New Orleans. And every dinner I've had here came with some great extras - a terrific amuse bouche, and usually a sorbet intermezzo. I cannot recommend ROOT highly enough."

  • "my second time here wasn't please with the seating by the booth ... feel like the table was higher siting from the booth and i was very uncomfortable eating... food was good ..... i order the pork belly but the rice was kinda dry... and i had a special steak it was good but i didn't think it worth 95 dollar.... other then that it was good server was great very friendly and knowledge about the food ...."

  • "My second visit to Root did not disappoint in any way. Creative, exciting, unusual. One of my favorites is "Menage a foie" - foie gras 3 ways - one of which is foie gras flavored cotton candy wrapped around a piece of the liver!!! A real treat - if I lived in New Orleans I would be here twice a month"
