Diner Reviews
  • "Riva Cucina was an absolute delight from start to finish. Highlights included the scallop appetizer-absolutely not to be missed-and the panna cotta. The mushroom pasta was rich and creamy, with delicious truffle pecorino. The seafood risotto was rich and deeply flavorful. I missed out on the wine-list due to a forced medical sobriety, but it looked well stocked with good options. The service was attentive but not intrusive, and oh so very kind. A wonderful date-night find!!"

  • "Riva Cucina definitely a foodies' restaurant. I began with insalata bietole and pappardelle. Excellent!"

  • "Heard all their pasta is homemade. We weren't disappointed. The clear favorite of our three dishes was the TORTELLONI AGLI ASPARAGI. Delicious!"

  • "I have been trying every year to find the right restaurant to go to for my friends Brithday who loves Italian. She is selective to say the least and goes to a narrow range of restuarants. Found Riva Cucina and decided to try. Interior (which I am a bit picky about) was simple but very comfortable and nice, good lighting set the right feeling for the restaurant. Although we didn't sit outside it has a great outdoor dining space which in the summer would be perfect. All food was great! Wait staff was fantastic - we were tryng to select a bottle of wine and our server brought us a flight of three wines to taste from. It made my friend feel very special on her Birthday and I am happy to have a new restaurant to go to!"

  • "We've been here 3 times now, and just love the professional but friendly staff and service. The pasta is house-made and is just wonderful. I've had the fabulous garbanzo bean soup twice and came back just for that, but it was off the menu that evening. In its place was a vegetarian lentil soup, which I did order and which was good but not great. I ordered the mushroom pasta which is just excellent; as a vegetarian, I appreciate a creative and beautifully done vegetarian option on the menu. My husband had the pasta bolognese which he said was very good. We enjoy the off the beaten path location and the generally good parking availability. I would say the ambiance is fun, not terribly romantic as it can get noisy and tables are close."

  • "Excellent Italian food. Very fresh vegetables, pasta cooked to perfection (al dente). Delicious past sauce. When we arrived it was quiet, but it got increasingly noisy, as there is nothing in the surroundings to absorb noise. Alas, this is becoming more & more the problems in restaurants in general. Still, I will go back but would choose early hours."

  • "been here twice now, just went for the boyfriend's birthday. Our food was superb, he got the swordfish and said it was the best he ever had. I got the parsley pasta, which was delicious. Such good fresh food, definitely in my top 5 of bay area restaurants!"

  • "not a complaint always like the staff and the creative good wine choices and ambiance. a bit noisy. we've been several times and will return"

  • "We found the food to pretty average. Service was too fast - not enough spacing between drinks, ordering, salads and mains. Beet salad tasted like it had been prepared hours before as it was freezing cold and flavorless. On the plus side, portions are enormous and very reasonably priced. Frankly, I can cook better at home."

  • "Given other diners' reviews, I expected much more. Perhaps it was an off-night, but the only outstanding things were the Acme bread and the very nice pinot grigio. The place is so loud I had to resort to trying to read the lips of my dinner companion. I had two barely mediocre dishes--a flavorless and thoughtlessly plated pear and endive salad, and a vaguely tomato-y, not creamy seafood risotto with tough calamari, some mealy, tasteless fish and two small okay shrimp. Given all the great restaurant choices in Berkeley, I can't see myself going back here."

  • "Everything at this restaurant was completely amazing. The food was remarkable from start to finish. We shared a lot of plates to be able to taste many options and every one of them was fantastic. The service was wonderful as well. Not to much attention, not too little."

  • "Great food, great find! We both had pasta dishes which were amazing. The prices were very reasonable and the service was very good. A friend had mentioned this spot to us and we are so happy we gave it a try. Will definitely be back!"

  • "have been here previously and always had a good experience. this time was an exception. the service was less attentive, the gnocchi was not good and the fish was overdone and overly salted. Disappointing but hopefully still an exception."

  • "My overall experience was a good one; although initially the service was a bit slow. My meal began with a delicious basket of plentiful bread and extra virgin olive oil, the portion sizes were just right and the temperature of Zuppa Di Zucca and the Tagliatelle Bolognese was perfect. My pasta was fantastic as was my glass of Prosecco wine."

  • "Riva Cucina is hidden in an industrial office area, off the beaten track. The ambience is perfect for a romantic evening and the food is spectacular. I am not sure if the pasta is house made, but tastes like it is, especially the ravioli drenched in butter/olive oil. Highly recommend Riva Cucina for all foodies."

  • "Good was great, the chef puts on a nice presentation The service was just ok, no one ever came back to ask If everything was ok, they seemed more concerned with Cleaning our table"

  • "the food served is prepared with much care. We have frequented Riva Cucina for a few years and have always had 5 star service - but this time a new waitress got the requested meal wrong (which was good tasting too) but something of this nature has never happen before - hence the 4 star vs 5 star service rating. The Wednesday. no corkage fee, is a very generous service, allowing us to add some very nice wine from our own cellar! Riva Cucina will remain a favorite of ours!"

  • "We love Riva Cucina for date night. We are always warmly greeted at the door. Waitstaff are friendly and knowledgable. And the food, more than anything else, brings us back again and again. Fresh salads, house made olive oil, fantastic fish dishes, savory lamb or pork. Always wonderful, always a pleasure. Desserts are light, deliciously authentic, and the espresso a must."

  • "We met friends here from SF on Saturday night as it was "mid-way" between our homes. Great food and was far above what we expected. It's in a warehouse area, but no parking issues - not far from the Berkeley Bowl - we thanked the chef for a good first time experience and will be back - great neighborhood gem or worth the drive, as we did."

  • "Chose Riva Cucina based on on-line reviews and we were pleased. We were a party of 6. Staff courteous and paced the meal according to our desire to linger and chat. I had mushroom pasta which was EXCELLENT, delicious homemade pappardelle with some truffle oil added. Large portion. One friend had seafood risotto which was outstanding. My husband had a steak very well-prepared,and thick. Another friend had the sauteed salmon - again - very large portion & creamy mashed potatoes. We had the burrata appetizer and shared a delicate salad. Good bottle of pinot gris."

  • "the pasta and fish were very good but my lamb shank was underseasoned and bland and was very disappointing. We also had the antipasti misti which was very good."

  • "Having spent a significant portion of my youth eating Italian food in Italy from my relatives, I have a good sense of what great Italian food should taste like. While Riva Cucina's food was not as good as my Zia Enza's food, it was close. I will go back again. I had the risotto with seafood (clams, baby octopus and shrimp). Very tasty. Service was professional and attentive with a bit of a homey flare to it. The restaurant is attractive. The prices are fair."

  • "I was searching for a Berkeley italian spot that was good for a group or 10 for a going away party. Everything was ready to go when we arrived, the servers didn't rush us, they accommodated our large group with our requests, we brought a bottle, and ordered a couple more. The food was great, plenty of ample parking, this is truly a hidden gem down by the water, we'll be sure to come back!"

  • "Nice place to check out if you are in the area. Some innovative preparations, and fresh ingredients. Moderate to low flexibility if you have food allergies."

  • "Staff was very patient as my doing companions were held up in terrible traffic and were very late. Salads were ready for them when they finally made it and the entrees came fast enough we were able to make our symphony date."

  • "From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed & comfortable. The seasonally inspired menu included sustainably caught day boat scallops & an antipasto misto platter. The scallops were perfect with a delicious sauce & plenty of crusty bread for dipping. One of us chose the Passatelli Alla Salsiccia, a melt in your mouth breadcrumb, egg & parmesan pasta dressed with sausage, cream and sage. It couldn't have been better. The Papparadelle al Funghi was also delicious, especially with an extra dusting of Parmesan cheese. We tried the Eight Arms Cellars, "Tentacles," a red blend that we'll look for when the winery puts out it's new selections next year. Topped off with a shared panna cotta, the meal hit all high notes. Can't wait to return!"
