Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first dining experience a RedO. Bar scene was lively even at 5.30. The restaurant has a lot of ambiance but the noise was overwhelming!! I sat at a small table with two friends and we had to shout to hear each speak! We asked if they could turn it down but nothing happened. We waited one and half hours for our dinner and the waiter did apologize. He gave the excuse that there was a large party on the patio but this group arrived quite some time after we placed our dinner order. All three of us chose the carnitas and all said it was very dry."

  • "We loved the food in that it was very eclectic and interesting. The service was spotty, however, delivered with a smile. I will go again."

  • "We had a groupon to go whale watching in Newport Beach so we decided to stay overnight. We noticed there was a Red O and had always wanted to try one. We never made it to the LA one so we decided to take the opportunity to try the Newport Beach one. It did not disappoint. The cochinta pebil was excellent as was the mole enchiladas. You could tell the tortillas were hand made...always a plus. Maybe now we'll go to the LA one which is much closer to us."

  • "I have been to Mexican restaurants all over the world, but never have I had a margarita like the one served at the Red O in Newport. I don't remember the name, but look for the Tejia-rimmed glass which, when you look down on it, forms a red "O". How clever is that? We took my 93-year-old mother there for lunch and were treated like royalty! I couldn't have been more pleased with the service, the drinks, the food (particularly the mole), the atmosphere -- everything! The staff went out of their way to be helpful and attentive, and we were particularly impressed with Sergio, our server. He was so personable, and even brought us churros with dipping sauce as a special treat. I am this restaurant's best walking advertisement! Go! Now!"

  • "Red o has a beautiful semi outdoor patio section that is great for large groups. The decor of the restaurant is welcoming and interesting. That being said, the food is hit or miss. .. halibut great. ... soup, kale salad nearly inedible. .. other entrees very average. Very popular spot, however and always good people watching."

  • "I give the service 5 stars for the following reasons: 1. Forgot cucumbers for our ceviche and the waiter without asking brought another order of ceviche out 2. My lamb came out over cooked and they replaced my wife's dinner too so we ate at the same time. 3. Management was present and attentive. I need to go back and try again. My wife loved her halibut. They made my wife's dinner to order exactly how she wanted: light olive oil and steamed vegetables. I had the lamb and found it one dimensional and small."

  • "Great vibe, décor, and food was delicious. The short rib enchiladas were meaty and flavorful. Very attentive servers and gave great suggestion for appetizer."

  • "This was our first visit. The service was great, lots of selection of alcohol. The food was great overall. We had the seafood ceviche (great) and the tamales (great) as appetizers, the lamp shops in the black mole sauce (excellent), grilled halibut (was not fresh, and the sauce didn't add any flavor or accentuate the fish), and street corn on the cob as a side dish (very tasty). Will come again, but will not try any fish which aren't local to the region."

  • "SECOND VISIT. THIS TIME WE HAD RESERVATIONS AT 2:30PM FOR LUNCH. RED O DID NOT HAVE TORTAS AND ONE OTHER GROUP OF FOOD AT ALL AS THOUGH WE WERE LATE AND DID NOT SAY ANYTHING TILL WE WERE ORDERING. THE CEVICHE SAMPLER WAS NOT ON THE MENU AND THE SINGLE YELLOWTAIL CEVICHE WAS DOWN ON FLAVOR AND HAD A POOR PRESENTATION. THEY DID NOT BRING CHIPS UNTIL WE WE ASKED FOR SOME TO GO WITH IT. THE CHILDREN'S MENU WAS LIMITED AND UNIMAGINATIVE. THE DOGGIE BAGS WERE MISSING MOST OF THE FOOD WE ASKED TO BE PACKED. IF SETTING FOR DINNER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE GUESTS THERE, THEY SHOULD CLOSE RESERVATIONS DOWN EARLIER. WON'T BR BACK AT THESE PRICES."

  • "It's a good restaurant but not THAT good. The chips are yummy!"

  • ""Classy" also meaning "expensive", but the food we got was delicious and very well flavored. They know how to use their spices well! Service was a little sparse but the restaurant was PACKED, even on a Tuesday night. I reserved through OpenTable so it was easy for me, but I imagine that trying to walk in and find a table was sort of difficult. The servers were personable when they had the time to stop by and check on us. We were waiting quite a bit for our food, but the restaurant the size it is and the wait staff being as busy as they were, there wasn't really anything to get angry about. I'd come back :) The mole sauce was really good, and I had the pork belly sopes, which were pretty delicious as well."

  • "My husband and I went here for lunch on a Saturday. It was not too crowded when we arrived but soon filled up so I recommend making a reservation. The front entrance has a really nice Tequila display and the bar and restaurant are tastefully decorated. We had the sweet corn chowder, pork belly sopes, Mexican red rice and Cochinita Pibil. Everything was very tasty and well presented. I enjoyed the house margarita. The staff were all professional and attentive. We will definitely go back."

  • "Food was amazing! We started with the classic guacamole with plantain chips & tortilla chips. I had the Chicken Mole Poblano and my partner had the Cochinita Pibil. We finished up with dessert, freshly made out of the oven, churros. Great menu, we will return."

  • "We come to the Red O often. However, this time we were disappointed with 2 things: The sides to 2 meals (rice & beans) were undesirable. Also, our favorite appetizer - pomegranate guacamole - has been dropped from the menu. Since the prices have increased, this made it all the more disappointing combined with the food quality slipping and our favorite being dropped. I hope Red O takes our comments to heart so that we can continue to be frequent guests."

  • "We are fans of Rick Bayless and have been to his restaurant in Chicago. We live just a few blocks away from Fashion Island and were excited as the new restaurant was being built. Unfortunately, the restaurant suffered from many bad reviews early on, so we decided to wait. Upon reading a so-so review in OC Magazine this past week, we decided to finally go even with our low expectations. Perhaps they got over their rough start as we found the food and service to be excellent! We especially enjoyed the do-it-yourself Cazuela tacos and the Mexican street corn. Despite OC Magazine's warning, we tried the lamb mole and found it worth ordering despite the price. To be fair, we came on a Sunday evening knowing it would be less hectic."

  • "We lived Red O and ate there at least once a week but it seems there is a new chef on board. The halibut was a tiny thin piece, overlooked and overspiced. It seems the new chef likes to kill the natural flavor of food with hot sauce. Very disappointed for the second time. Veronica, the floor manager took great care of us and although we didn't want to eat she made sure we left happy. Kudos for great staff like Veronica and Karen. We will give red o another try soon and ask that they use less hot sauce."

  • "Our recent lunch at Red O was lovely! From the striking atmosphere and decor to the friendly servers and the delicious cuisine, this venue is a winner. We both chose the soft taco plate. There are six different tacos; you can choose up to three in any combination. Loved the steak, mahi mahi and shrimp varieties. The salsas accompanying the tortilla chips were not the "usual." Their flavors were subtle and complex. We highly recommend Red O!"

  • "This would have been a 5 but the churro machine was broken so there were no churros for dessert AND we had been anticipating getting them all day....... Rick Bayless how can you have a broken churro machine, obviously a highly ordered menu item now we have to go to Disneyland to get them."

  • "Rick Bayless has a beautiful concept.the design and layout is fantastic. That being said I didn't go to Red O for that . I went for the food. I always make it a point to order Carnitas on my first visit to a Mexican Restaurant. I wish I hadn't this time. The Carnitas was very dry and somewhat tough. The only think that saved it from being a total disappointment was the sauce that it was in. The sauce was great. My wife had the short rib enchiladas. Very good. She was disappointed with the rice. Thought it was very plain."

  • "Have fun choosing from the special drinks, all with fresh juices and refreshing flavors. Many appetizers and small plates. Good size portions for entres. Sides are large enough to share. Some of our favorites were plantains, street corn, goat cheese tamales, short rib tamales and enchiladas, lamb chops and fresh halibut. Delicious desserts too!"

  • "We were seated on the patio, a lovely setting and a welcome relief from the noisy dining room. The place was bustling, the bar jammed as usual. Our waiter was attentive and courteous. The food was borderline good/ok, which makes it seriously overpriced. I had the Camarones Mojo de Ajo. They were warm, not hot, and very rich. My husband had a grilled fish which was good but not awesome. We had a bottle of Sancerre and split a dessert. The bill came to $150. Ouch. I think if we were to return, we'd sit in the bar and make a meal of the appetizers, which looked better than the main courses."
