Rapanahock wAs a pleasant surprise! The food was fantastic! Easily the best lamb that I've ever had! The beer and wine lists are good, but not intimidating. House cocktails are unique and very good. The layout is open, so the vibrant bar scene can be a bit noisy.

My wife and I had an excellent dinner at Rappahannock. The cocktails were phenomenal! I had the Manhattan and the Vieux Carre. Both were great but the Vieux Carre was outstanding in its balance. My wife ordered the Rain or Shine Salad -- very tasty. I had the Rappahannock River Oysters with Pearls (Trout Caviar). The oysters were fresh, briny, and succulent with a dollop of golden caviar on each. This dish was worth the two hour trip from NoVa! Even though I went for the seafood -- when I saw pork belly on the menu as an entree, I had to get it. It was divine! Crispy skin, thick luscious meat with a juicy layer of fatty goodness -- in a word "bliss." My wife had the roasted chicken -- tender and well seasoned. For dessert we shared the panna cotta -- it was nice, but not over the top. Needless to say we will be back -- and next time I'll have the lamb neckbone that everyone is raving about.

We've been to Rappahanock before, and had a great experience, but they couldn't quite string it together this time. There was a monstrous time gap between the apps and the main course and our server didn't come by during most of that time. We had originally said no to a second round of cocktails, but had the server asked again we definitely would've had a drink at some point during that gap. Of the two entrees one was excellent, the other was merely good. Her Cocktail, a Pimm's cup kind of thing, was excellent, mine was somewhat disappointing, I asked for the "Dealer's choice" "something with commonwealth gin, on the bitter side" . . . and I got a Pink Gin, ie gin and bitters. I mean, yes that is exactly what I asked for, but it's so exactly what I asked for as to be pointless, I don't need to pay a craft cocktail price for "gin plus bitter" to come out as "gin plus bitters". I have faith based on previous experience here and the opinion of people I trust that this was an abberant experience, and even as it was it was pretty good, but "pretty good" at what should be an excellent restaurant is dissapointing

Food was fantastic. Server was very informed about the options on the menu and took great care to describe the choices of oysters and entrees. Entrees run between 26 and 34 dollars. Oysters were divine and were $15 for 1/2 dozen but well worth the price. Desserts were all very good. We had a party of (6) and each of us ordered something different. The cobbler is fresh and cooked as ordered. The chocolate ganache crepe could be described as "Death by Chocolate". It's so rich you can't eat an entire piece. The persimmon pudding was voted "Best in Show" by our table. It's unique and is probably an option you don't see very often.

The salad was delicious. Excellent dressing, crisp and flavorful young greens. Lamb shank was tender and flavorful. The whole fish was moist but bland. Sides for both meals were okay. Dessert, the buckwheat crepes cake with ganache, was disappointing. The coffee was also average. The restaurant is very loud after 6pm, so go if you're looking for a lively bar scene. The service was very good, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Maybe just an off night on the food.

There were 7 in our party. Service not as attentive as we would like. Had to go to Host Desk to get sweetener that was not offered with tea and we could not get server's attention. Menu too gourmet for each of us. Every menu item included something that we didn't know what it was. Food quality, taste, and presentation was very good. Would have liked some more basic items offered and would have liked a crab dish or two. Dining area is very urban and the noise level was high as the restaurant filled.

Saw the write up for Rappahannock in Esquire Magazines list of Best New in the US. Checked menu out online, and decided to try with a co worker during a recent business trip. Going to just call "R" so I don't keep trying to spell out. First, the food. Great menu choices, though relatively limited. Though I did not ask, I believe this is a "farm to table" restaurant, as menu choices focused on a lot of seasonal products. Notably, there was no beef dish on the menu.As you might expect, oysters (night I visited they had three types) are prominently featured at top of menu as well as salt clams. Tried 2 of each of the oysters which were fresh, full and delicious. Server even guided me to the different characteristics of each in terms of their sweetness through salinity. Menu featured a number of other appetizers and salads. For dinner, my companion had a grilled marinated shrimp dish which he found pretty amazing. Shrimp were full and the marinade was done lightly so as not to overpower the freshness of the shrimp. Also he said they were perfectly grilled, meaning more of a medium than grilled into rubber texture. Had the beet salad as well, which looked great. I had the pork special of the day, which was a generous and perfectly seared pork belly, served over a bed of sauerkraut, apples and lentils. Awesome dish. Only disappointment and it is minor is that they were out of the lamb (and it was only 7 PM). Next time. The wine list is relatively limited from what I could see, but fairly priced. Excellent selection of draft beers (and they do a flight of four for you, many of which were locals) as well as a small selection of bottled beers. The cocktail list had a number of custom blends with some great variations on traditional libations. Did not try desserts, as servings were ample with the appetizer. Bill for two with tip was just under $100. I would definitely go back and do recommend.

Friends who travel to Richmond on business tell me that there are a lot of good restaurants and this is one of them. We were in town for the Richmond Marathon and ate here before the race. It's not your typical dinner before a long race place. I had some rice with a whole Spanish mackerel. I was a little taken aback that the fish was not filleted like other restaurants do, but it was split and easy enough to eat. They have an interesting beer selection, and good wine choices. Of course, they have oysters...Rappahannock, York and James. I had two each on the half shell and enjoyed them. Definitely will go back next time I'm in Richmond.

Rappahannock has been one of our favorite additions to the Richmond food scene. The food is always wonderful, but the service during our last visit was really sub par. The waiter took a good 10 minutes just to come to our table, then it was every bit of 10-15 more minutes for our drinks to arrive. Waiter blamed the bartender which was surprising/frustrating as we only ordered beer/wine, nothing fancy or difficult to make. The food was still excellent, but for the prices charged we expect better service than we received. Waiter could have explained they were busy/understaffed and really helped his case, but he was very unapologetic and arrogant. Will definitely think twice before going again.

We do not eat out a lot and only patronize food we don't usually prepare ourselves, so Rappahannock was a find the first time and just as impressive the second visit. Best to love oysters as we do. The waitstaff has been trained to talk about oysters for those who are unfamiliar with the differences offered. We are fans!

Lots of hype about this restaurant and it was very good. However, all four of our party reported good, but not outstanding entrees. We all felt that the service was not outstanding and the prices exceeded the food and drink quality. If we go again, we may try more of the signature oyster or paella dishes. Too many excellent restaurants in Richmond now that have raised the bar!

I have eaten at Rappahannock now four times and had take out once. I like the fact that they source much of their food from local waters and farms. This was the best meal I have had there. I had the pork belly - so did my friend. A small scattering of home-fermented sauerkraut over savory lentils added a crisp, sharp dimension to the buttery softness of the pork. We both described that it was out of this world. When I dine out, I always try to get something that I wouldn't ordinarily make at home. I have ruined pork belly when I have tried to cook it at home - it was nothing like this! We also had a variety of raw oysters to begin the meal - they were delicious - some a bit brinier than others - the difference in the terroir was remarkable.

I was excited to finally get to try Rappahannock. I had heard good things from my chef friends so this had been on my "must try" list for a while. The food I saw going out to other tables looked and smelled great. The seafood sampler was well-crafted, but the condiments could use some help. I received the paella and actually started laughing at the portion size. It tasted great (albeit too al dente) but there must have been some price hike from the distributor on the Calasparra rice. It was almost a small plate portion size. For $32 I expected something a bit more substantial.

Our entrees were delicious and apple pie dessert perfection. The noise level made it challenging to visit, but we enjoyed the lively crowd. A great dinner

Had a wonderful dinner at Rappahannock. Started with baked oysters and cerviche. Both were very tasty and perfectly prepared. We shared the paella which was baked in earthenware. While different form those we had eaten in Spain, the seafood was moist and seasoned appropriately. The waitress recommended a wine to accompany the paella which was perfect. We'll return often.

We had a 530 reservation for a 7 pm show at the Carpenter Center - a block away. Ordering about 5:35 pm, we had to beg the waiter to try to find out about our food at 6:35 pm. It looks like they didn't have enough chefs or wait-staff. He somehow rushed the food out and left the check at 6:40. We ate quickly and just got to out seats by about 7pm. I cam to the restaurant because I heard it had good seafood. However, many of the interesting sounding seafood dishes had pork, bacon, or ham on them or cooked in them. I don't eat pork products and wish that restaurants would understand that not everyone likes pork products on their seafood dishes. I don't recommend this place. My wife and I said that we were unlikely to return

Despite arriving in time for a reservation well in advance of the time we needed to leave for a theater curtain, the service was so slow we almost didn't make it. Then my dish arrived luke warm, with a poached egg on top that I'm sure was supposed to be runny to mix properly with the dish but was rock hard. Because there was not time to send it back I just ate it as is.

Made an 8:30 reservation through OpenTable but didn't get seated until 9:10! The bar was hopping so there really wasn't anywhere to sit other than on a bench by the window. We were getting ready to leave when they said they'd finally be able to seat us. They apologized and offered us a dozen oysters and two glasses of Prosecco as consolation. We appreciated that. Our server was friendly/knowledgeable/good/attentive. It was a special day for us - our anniversary - which they new about, so the long delay in getting seated was a bit of a disappointment and caused the rest of our evening to be delayed. Clearly they overbook, so be prepared to wait. Restaurant has a cool vibe/crowd. Food was good. Oysters delicious.

We're not foodies, so found the menu very challenging. Eclectic with so many unusual ingredients and unfamiliar terms, online we just couldn't tell if it was appetizing, but gave it a shot. Sorting through the choices took time, but the waiter was knowledgeable, patient and helpful in helping select our dishes. We shared 2 appetizers and 3 entrees and found the food familiar yet surprising with unusual combinations of flavors and textures. Favorites include the wood fired scallops and pork, the rockfish and oyster bouride (a stew), and the celery root soup. Challenging, entertaining, and delicious in a welcoming environment, if you want dinner out that pushes convention, this is a memorable choice. Good selection of whisky and beer as well.

Reception and waiting was adequate. wine list was very poor. Appetizer choices well below expectation. To flaunt oysters, the restaurant offers them in a very restricted way - no stew, no fried oysters. Entree was ok, nothing special. Although Richmond Magazine had rated the restaurant in the top 25, they are no where close to that level.
