Diner Reviews
  • "Started at the bar--not your typical 20 something bartenders. Knew their wine, made cocktail suggestions, has great personalities. Oysters were a hit but the entrees were the highlight. each ordered fish, three different types, all cooked to perfection."

  • "We went to Rappahannock on a Thursday night at 7 PM. When making the reservation, I specifically asked for a window table for three. Upon arrival our table was not ready even though the restaurant was not busy. We were shown a table between the front door and the bar, not a window table and were told that was the only window seat available even though clearly, there were many open tables by the windows. Ordered baked oysters for appetizer to share. We were under-whelmed by the six small oysters that tasted mainly of green peas. The beet salad and the roasted carrot salads were wonderful. Main dishes were only okay for the upscale price. With all the great food choices in Richmond, I won't be coming back."

  • "We thoroughly enjoy the food and atmosphere at Rappahannock. The chef is imaginative and everything works. Cocktails are good, wine and beer list are extensive and prosecco's on tap - what's not to like? The staff is pleasant and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is sophisticated. We'd recommend it to all."

  • "Food was good and service was great with knowledgeable wait staff. Was very pricey for the amount of food you get. Nice wine and beer list!"

  • "The food was wonderful---especially the scallops! They were tender---like butter. The beans and broth were incredible. The King Salmon was good as well, but not as much as the scallops."

  • "Overpriced food and less than exemplary service are the best ways to describe my lackluster experience. 6 Green weeds drowned in 'kill a snail with the amount of salt' fish oil dressing proffered as a salad (no other vegetable) on an undersized dish. A main course that after 65 minutes of wait time was sooooo underwhelming that the only thing that could make the salmon any better would have been not to order it at all. - - - If you would like an exorbitant wait (with no crowd) for a main course that had less flavor than a mouthful of raw sesame seeds this Uber-wannabe-trendy-spot is your dive. The silver lining was chatting with the 17 year old oyster shuck; great enthusiasm, just hope that he rubs off on others!!"

  • "Took my parents out for their anniversary and everyone enjoyed their meals! Salmon and halibut cooked to perfection. Local oysters were awesome. Overall great food."

  • "I had seen a documentary on television about Rappahannock oysters which led to the restaurant business.. I was very curious at that point to visit the restaurant and it was simply terrific. I had raw, baked and grilled oysters and Lamb (melt in your mouth) and a sampling of craft beers. The atmosphere was casual yet everyone there knew there was serious cuisine at hand to be consumed and a hearty selection of craft beers and other libations. It's just a classy, well done restaurant and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and they all seemed glad they were there! Go.."

  • "On this, our fourth visit, smoke from the grill for the first time distracted. The food was outstanding, as usual. Server was well prepared and "pro-active"."

  • "This restaurant rocks! All the small plates are excellent and the oysters are wonderful, but that goes without saying at this restaurant. Wine list is great."

  • "Seems obvious to say but the oysters were amazing! The drinks, service and pace was perfect. Everyone in Richmond that appreciates great food needs to try Rappahanock!"

  • "Rappahannock is beautiful, lively and smells great. The menu is well-selected and the wine/beer list is good - stay away from the Albarino, though, because it tastes sweet, apple-y and not at all typical of the varietal. The server removed the glass of wine from the bill and we found a great rose. The food selections are beautifully prepared - unfortunately, my friend's Walleye arrived looking terrific, but the inner section was cold - not underdone, cold. That entree was not removed from the bill, though we brought the problem to the server's attention. On the other hand, the Halibut was very good and was cooked to medium in the interior."

  • "The oysters and appetizers were great. Entrees are too salty for my tastes, I have been a couple of times and tried several various entrees. The Old-Fashion is INCREDIBLE. The desserts are wonderfulEnjoy"

  • "Too many hard interior surfaces made for too much noise and difficulty in carrying on a conversation last Saturday night. Food was good, although the octopus appetizer was a tad too salty. Everything is ala carte and pricey including an extra charge for bread. Peach and berry cobbler dessert with vanilla ice cream was excellent. Generous use of morel mushrooms in a noodle side dish was appreciated. Good selection of craft beers."

  • "I was willing to overlook the table next to the bathroom, and being completely ignored for 15-20 minutes despite having a reservation, but not the lousy service or the food. The lamb was mostly fat, bones, and gristle, and so so salty!! Husband's fish was ok, nothing to write home about. I will say my cocktail was good. The waiter was slow and condescending. He informed me when I asked for bread that "you have to order it." I'm not sure what he thought I was trying to do by asking him, the waiter.. Perhaps there is some secret alternate bread ordering process? We had to order it a second time before we finally received a few pieces of hard bread on a saucer, plunked down on the table like an insult. Needless to say, we won't be back."

  • "Everything, from the ambience, to the wait staff, to the food and wine, was FANTASTIC. I was worried that the air would be smokey and that we would smell bad from sitting in it after reading one review, complaining about the smell and haziness from the grill, but there was no evidence of any of that! The air is not heavy and the smell is nothing but subtle deliciousness. This was our anniversary dinner and we could not have had a better experience! Thanks for a memorable evening, Rappahannock."

  • "Excellent local oysters and intriguing grilled selections. Then grilled braanzino was great. Even more impressive was the very adventurous beer list, which a $10 flight for four choices was ample and a bargain."

  • "Great experience with the exception of seating. With a reservation, 2 of us came in after a rain storm on time. The restaurant was not busy and there were 6 open 2-top tables. With some discussion up front at hostess area, we were taken to the last table in the back, by the kitchen door, near the bathroom. Unwilling to sit there, we requested a seat toward the front, which was granted. I was offended by the initial treatment of 2 women with a reservation. The rest of the meal and dinner experience was excellent. Our waiter was knowledgeable and delightful."

  • "The food was fine, but the value is awful. With prices of entrees ranging from $26 to $32, I expect the food to be spectacular. It was not at all. My wife ordered the scallops, and got three small scallops and some beans for $26. My paella was fine but again a small portion considering the $32 price tag. One daughters had salmon and the other halibut, each $26 and good, but not worthy of the price. The philosophy seems to be to dress up the entree with some exotic sounding side dish (bok choy, etc) and price it about 1/3 over what it should be. We felt robbed and would never recommend it to others. We ran into friends there whose thoughts almost reflected our exactly."

  • "Our party of 7 thoroughly enjoyed our Father's Day dinner. The food was imaginative and delicious, and the drinks were expertly crafted. It's hard to find a Richmond bartender who has heard of a sazerac... mine was sooo good. The baked oyster (with bacon and figs) appetizer is a "must do". Then, there were the different types of raw oysters. I really meant to bring some paella home, but it all had to be eaten right away. My 11 year old daughter absolutely demolished her pork belly dinner. The halibut must have great too... It was totally MIA at the end of dinner. Can't wait to return."

  • "I had a difficult time deciding what to eat. If you like oysters go for it. The rockfish and oyster stew was a bit bland except for the exorbitant amount of fresh pepper they use. The waiter was extremely nice and helpful. The atmosphere was nice. They charge for bread."

  • "I have lived in the major US cities my entire adult life and am seriously spoiled when it comes to food: Rappahannock is top notch and in a class of it's own in Richmond."

  • "The food was wonderful, all four meals were cooked perfectly, oysters were fresh and tasty. Good selection of craft beers and adequate wine selection at good pricing. Service was also very good, friendly and efficient. Only problem was the kitchen's woodfired grill is in definite need of an upgrade in exhaust fan system, at nod point the room was so smokey, my wife's eyes were highly negatively impacted. This one issue caused my wife to not want to return. We actually smelled like we had been by an open fire on our patio upon departure. If you can tolerate the smoke, this is a great find."

  • "prosecco on tap - one of the best in town excellent wine selection excellent presentation of entrees, with the freshest ingredients excellent service, impeccable timing by far the best all around dining experience in months"

  • "Enjoy Rappahannock though found the entree prices (most well over $20) to be a bit on the high side. Additionally, one of the people in our party received two of the lamest pours of wine I've ever seen. Overall, is av ery cool place though wouldn't want to go their super hungry or thirsty; it can get a little expensive in there."

  • "Well you just have to try the oysters, starting from the closest to the furtherest away. This will give you a true taste of Virginia's bi valve diversity. The best tip that can be given is to try the whole fish, it was grouper that night and grilled with the wood fire. So tasty. Now the secret on the menu is the lamb! Don't say , huh, believe it. Its a treat you always remember as great and make you shake your head. In a seafood place? Don't forget to let the mixologist take your liquor choice and create something unique on the spot. Hats off to the service staff they were right on top of everything and pleasant even on a busy night. Enjoy!!"

  • "The menu options are not wide ranging, but what is available is produced with gusto. The food is tasty and the combination of ingredients used to produce the end product are interesting and provide excellent flavor profiles. The farm raised oysters were a great appetizer."

  • "Overall service and my overall experience was excellent. Server knew the menu well and made good suggestions.. Food was delviered promptly and was all cooked to perfection. I would suggest that some bread to accompany the meal would be a welcome addition."

  • "Not just oysters but some of the freshest seafood and vegetables available any where. I had seafood paella which was better than the same meal I ordered on the French Riviera. No kidding this is one top restaurant! My wife had Virginia scallops and they were exceptional ! Not sure how they pull this off so inland but we will be back again and again!"

  • "The food all had good flavors, except the salad which had a heavy hand of salt in the dressing. The oysters had good flavor, but for the price was very disappointing the the portions and the size. The chicken and fish were good. Mix drinks selection and taste were wanting. Hard to have a conversation at a table of 4 where we were located by the restroom. Would not go back, I do not mind spending $200.00 or more for a meal for 4, however this really missed the mark. Would have been fine for $125.00, not $200.00."

  • "Great experience all around! I had a perfectly made old fashioned and my partner had a beautiful, delicious bourbon sour...so good, he had another, made with moonshine. We're big fans of Rappahannock oysters, and enjoyed the raw and baked versions. Get the gnocchi with ramps and guanciale! "

  • " The food was good, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was much better than I expected. The fish and oysters were fresh and delicious. The paella was good, but I'm spoiled, I've eaten paella in France and Italy, so my expectations are very high. The Rappahannock is a good place to dine for date night or friends on a Friday or Saturday night. "

  • "This was not my first visit and each time the food was very good and the service in general OK. This time the evenibg was marred by not a very pkeasent entrance with the hostess not willing to give us the requested table even though there was no sign of it being reserved. It does create an impression of not being "a preferred" customer. Hope that they will change their ways as other wise it is a good place"
