Diner Reviews
  • "My family and I had a great time. Loved the oysters and happy hour specials. Lisa out server did a wonderful job describing the menu and helping us decide what to order. Will definitely return. "

  • "Limited menu and different items to choose. Not your typical food choices but a good mix of unusual flavored and spices for the dishes offered."

  • "Bartender was great, very friendly and helpful. But food was not as expected. Grilled scallops were way too smoky, grilled flavor overpowered scallop. Very disappointing. Baked oysters were ok. Grilled chicken was good. Wait service was slow and odd. Beautiful space and very cool vibe, but if we came again would just have oysters and drinks at bar."

  • "The "old salt"oysters were stellar. The server said the ceviche was shrimp but when it came to the table it was a white fish (know what you're serving) and was kind of plain. The salad was very plain and while the menu said it came with honey crisp apples it actually had Granny Smiths. The monk fish entree was outstanding as was the pork belly. The cocktail & beer menus are very good and they offer pairings with your dinner selection. Overall it was a good experience."

  • "We love the oysters at Rappahannock, but there's so much more to this lively restaurant and it's focus on fresh, simple, and creatively prepared seafood. Highly-recommended, as is their original riverfront location, Merroir, less than an hour from Richmond."

  • "I felt that for the money we spent the portion size should have been bigger. Seeing a near by table that had the same food my portion was not as large as the other patron. Oysters were awesome and would probably have rather spent the $150 on them. Drinks were tasty but again a 4oz martini isn't worth $9. Being in the restaurant business and knowing food cost probably makes me more critical but still felt like it was a good night. Service was great and his knowledge of the food was impeccable."

  • "The scallops were the best I have had. Portions are small but everything was delicious. The only negative about the restaurant is that because they grill a lot of their food we left smelling like we had been at a cookout. I had to take our nice clothes we had worn to the cleaners."

  • "Really enjoyed the meal here. I love good caviar and their selection and presentation (and price) really made the meal for me. I think the chef is creative (in a good way) and the prices very reasonable when compared to D.C. or Philly or New York...the wine list is not extensive but there was a good selection. Definitely go there if you love oysters"

  • "Our group had a hard time finding a quick , inexpensive dinner. The bar area is nice and fully stocked"

  • "We have had many nice dinners at Rappahanock but we feel the service is not nearly as good as it used to be! We are also very tired of the desert menu that never really seems to change. Management seems indifferent to complaints and staff turn over high. We hardly ever see the same face twice. Although we had a great server the last time we were there, we will not be coming back soon. Too bad, because this restaurant used to be one of our favorites in Richmond."

  • "We have been looking for a good place to find Shad Roe and Rappahanock did pretty well. It was a little dry and over cooked. There was not real side dish with this entree. The description listed brussell sprouts, beets, and a fancy name for pork cheek. These were present but cut into teeny cubes that formed more of a sauce than a side. Roe would have benefited from additional fat. Our oysters, cocktails, and beer were excellent and the service was very attentive. We will go again but still looking for Shad Roe."

  • "Enjoyed the experience. Waitress was great and knew her menu. Wine was great and affordable. Salad was out of this world. We both had seafood. Scallops for her and monk for me. Absolutely fantastic. With tip we dropped a buck and a half but worth every penny."

  • "Delicious! Unusual preparations and some unusual offerings on the menu. Creative drink menu and fun stop at the bar before dinner."

  • "Despite having made a reservation about two months ago and despite a number of empty tables on the left hand (dining) side of the room, we were seated at a high top in the bar area. It seemed a bit long (5+ minutes) for the server to attend to us, and after taking our orders, she brought our chilled white wines before we had finished our cocktails. The food, though pricey, was excellent, especially the shad roe. Because of our nearness to the open kitchen with its wood oven, we smelled pretty smoky when we left."

  • "Enjoyed dinner. Food was excellent but portion was small. Nice atmosphere and service was great. Very busy and energetic"

  • "Excellent! But sort of unfortunately no bread is offered with meal. I know you can order from menu but a smallbread snac to go with drinks would be nice."

  • "Truly our favorite Richmond restaurant. The food, the service, the experience...never disappoints!"

  • "Very noisy but that's better than "dead" quiet. Excellent central location."

  • "Four fish eaters, only one oyster lover. We were bowled over by the menu, which forced on all of us hard choices. All dishes were delicious. Every employee was gracious. Our server was knowledgable and experienced, but never intrusive. In a full house, everything unfolded in a timely fashion."

  • "Rappahannock is the trendy restaurant owned by Rappahannock River Oyster Company and is the urban sister of their riverside tasting room Merroir. The oysters are plump, succulent and superb and the menu offers creative preparations of oysters, scallops, fresh fish as well as some meat (pork, lamb, chicken) dishes in addition to the raw bar offerings. I had baked oysters with bacon, leek and sunchokes topped with bread crumbs; really nice. My husband was thrilled to find shad roe on the menu, prepared with Brussels sprouts, guanciale, dried cherries, pickled beets and a swirl of balsamic. But sampling oysters from various RRO locations and salinities make this a real sea-farm to table spot. Service fine but laissez-faire."

  • "Raw oyster appetizers were wonderful. I can really take or leave the "grilled" but just as often over-charred Billy bread. Two in our party really enjoyed the bourride, two the scallops. One less pleased with the baked oyster small plate because the breading just didn't quite work. Overall very nice dining experience in spite of being situated under the speaker on someone's heavy rock and roll night."

  • "If you want a selection of fresh oysters served raw or baked, ceviche, fresh fish and creatively crafted dishes, this may be the place for you. The bar offers unique cocktails, a list of craft beers, an eclectic wine list and a staff knowledgeable about their drinks as well as the menu items. The noise level is energetic and parking can be a challenge but it's been well worth the trip downtown from the west end."

  • "FOOD WAS VERY GOOD, wine &beer choices good as well. Love the building. A bit loud but still most enjoyable evening."

  • "Food is expensive, but VERY good. It's worth the price. However, wine selection is terrible. I know it's trendy to have 500 beers and all the hipsters will love it, but this will probably keep me from going back. And the service was just OK"
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Our service was slow but I think it was just our waiter. Seems silly to charge for bread and when we ordered it, it didn't come with butter or oil, jus a couple of pieces on a plate. Not worth charging for!"

  • "lovely restaurant in a great location, friendly staff, busy Sat night, we were seated in the back, with reservations, (not that bad,, but one would think reservations would get a better seat) waiter was very nice, even tho he brought me the wrong beer ,,,, which was ok, since I was going to have another anyway. however, they had already run out of my first choice at 7pm very good beer list, draft and bottle, decent wine list as well, tho not as many by glass choices the salad was fantastic, great mix of greens, wonderful salad dressing, the meal, not so much for some of us, scallops, seared, more like burnt on one side, not a good taste, monkfish and baked oysters were good,"

  • "Dinner at the bar. Friendly and very knowledgeable bartender. Great wine selection, craft gins with house-made tonic - amazing. Enjoyed a dozen oysters, ceviche with fluke, grilled octopus and a grilled carrot special (best carrots *ever*). Shared a whole grilled fish - superb. Everything was fantastic - delicious food in a hip and laid back setting."

  • "They oysters are clearly the highlight here. The grilled fish was more blackened than grilled. The lentils in squid ink are tasty and so are the Brussels sprouts. The wine list is interesting and pairs well with the food. Service is very good and attentive. The decor is attractive, but don't get seated near the bathrooms. It's like Siberia there."

  • "My boyfriend and I went here for my birthday. He had the oysters and I had the octopus. The menu is ver limited but we enjoyed ourselves. They have an excellent beer selection, the vibe is great. Our server was attentive and polite."

  • "We loved our dinner here. Started at the bar with a couple of glasses of wine and wonderful oysters. Then, the salad and entrees were memorable.....grilled scallops she had, and for me, the pork belly. We will be back."

  • "We came here to eat before a show at the National on a Tuesday night. It was actually a little slow so the noise level was down and the service was great. We just wanted to graze and have a couple of drinks. The beer menu was good...some of our favorite local craft brews. We tried two types of oysters, some grilled, some raw and all were outstanding. We also split a lovely salad and the best ceviche I've ever eaten. We finished up with some baked oysters that were just okay...overpowered by artichoke. Overall, it was a really good experience in a very comfortable space, and they even played the music of the band we were going to see. Nice touch!"

  • "This is a great restaurant and one that we will certainly come back to. Beer selection is pretty good, cocktail menu was good, oysters and dinners were all great. As you would expect, the price and climb up there. We were a party of (4) and we dropped $300."

  • "I was really looking forward to dining here as I had heard great reviews. We got there and were immediately sat, which was great. The entire restaurant smells like a great hickory smoked fire pit, which is nice, but can be overwhelming at times. If I remember correctly, this place was originally named Rappahannock Oyster Bar? But now it's listed as a seafood restaurant -- while they have a ton of clams, oysters, etc. their seafood offerings are minimal minus some fish dishes. Menu is eclectic which is great, but I had a hard time finding something I wanted on there due to ingredients I didn't even understand. My dish was delicious and cooked well, but a very small portion. Salad was fantastic. Billy bread is nothing more than toast."

  • "Love love love the raw oysters -- and I am an oyster addict."
    Dined on 2/12/2014
  • "The raw oysters were awesome & at 2$ a pop, not too bad. Food was OK but not worth the $, especially with the portion size. I had swordfish with mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts. The fish was maybe 6oz. There were enough potatoes for about 4-5 fork scoops with a couple of little cooked potato strips. There were three tiny mussels on top. They gave me 3 brussels sprouts cut in half and sautéed. My SO had the monkfish served with fennel in a light coconut milk & paprika broth. It was a delightful dish, but still the portion size was too small for the price paid. Rather than charging for bread, they should provide to sop up the broth. total bill w/ tip = $148.55 which included a bottle of their cheap white wine. Not worth the $"

  • "I gave Rappahannock two tries before writing this review. The restaurant is very nice and well designed. It is a little noisy, but not too bad. The menu is wonderful and the food both times I ate there was very good. The problem is the service. During both visits (different servers) it was inattentive and it left you feeling that they thought you were lucky to get to eat there. The last time I was there with two friends, one of whom ordered a rum and coke before dinner. My friend is a big guy, and can certainly handle one mixed drink. The waitress gave him sort of a hard time about it and he said "Don't worry, we are walking" -- the waitress responded by saying "Well then, I will get you a bottle of water." We were all like "Whoa!" Uncool."
