Diner Reviews
  • "Since it was our first time there we let the server order for us. We had a few apetizers including salad which were outstanding. The entries were equally good."

  • "Love the food here - will definitely be back. The Burmese Chicken Salad is one of my favorites! We were there on a Saturday night so it was packed, and while the noise level was loud at that time, you could still each other talk. The service was awesome!"

  • "This was our 6th time eating here. We have several favorite dishes that do not disappoint: tea leave salad (a delight of flavors and textures), basil chili beef, mango chicken and kebat shrimp. The service has always been very good and ambiance is light and modern. Even though it is a smallish place, they make the most of their space."

  • "So crowded and so loud but food and service were worth it. I would go next time before 6 or near 8 so the noise level might be better"

  • "Great samosas, really delicious. Great atmosphere, and fantastic customer service. Pad Thai was good, could have been better though. in general we really enjoyed it. would be great if you had a kids menu."

  • "We had a wonderful time at Rangoon. The food and service was excellent. The odd thing is they don't serve coffee, not even drip, so when we ordered dessert and the tried to order coffee, they said "you can go across the street and get some at Peets..." Really? So strange. It ended an otherwise wonderful experience oddly."

  • "First went here for lunch and loved it! The tea leaf salad is wonderful and the service is very good! Went the second time for dinner and had another great experience. The salmon was delicious, as was the Ruby's shrimp and mango chicken. The eggplant was very good. The catfish was just so so -- too many bones to enjoy so didn't finish it. Mango chicken needed more sauce. Love this place with the only complaint being that there need to be more vegetables included in the main dishes. They are basically just meat or veg with sauce. I ordered broccoli added to my dish for extra charge and they had to check with the chef first. Ordered the string beans as a side and they were the highlight!! The desserts are very good -- especially the ice cream"

  • "We've been here several times and continue to bring visitors. The experience is always consistently excellent. Quick food service, great food flavor and great staff. I find a new favorite dish every time. Coconut Rice is delicious. Latest favorite is the Yellow Tofu with Red Curry. Very good."

  • "I was very disappointed with Rangoon. Their tea salad lacked the citrus from lime and was dry. Their curries did not vary and it tasted as though they used the same curry for all the dishes and just changed the ingredients put into the curry. The place was so noisy that we had to shout at our table to talk to eachother. Rangoon is not even close to Mingalaba in Burlingame. I was hoping that Rangoon would be as good as it would give me an alternative to Burmese food because Mingalaba is always so busy. I frequently have visited Burma (Miyanmar) and am there at least once per year."

  • "Would give Rangon Ruby 5 stars but for one issue. The ambience, service and food are all wonderful but it was horrendously noisy- 5 bombs for sure. Impossible to carry on a conversation. It's a small place so don't know there's anything you can do about it. But if you value conversing with friends I would eat outside if the weather's okay."

  • "The first edition of this restaurant remains in Palo Alto and is also superb. HIghly recommended for prompt and very attentive service, large menu with an excellent selection, not to mention the food is especially tasty and not commonly found in other restaurants: pea leaves were over-the-top as was pork and pumpkin stew,"

  • "I have been here and to the PA location several times. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. I've never been to a restaurant where everything I try is amazing. I could eat here every night!!"

  • "Burmese food is a fusion of Indian, Chinese, Malay and Thai flavors and Rangoon Ruby does an excellent job of displaying it in their dishes. This is my second visit. We were a group of six and had cat fish soup, raw mango salad, the salmon, lamb with basil, chicken Kabat, and Garlic Noodle. For desert we shared fried bananas with mango ice cream and dessert Palata with Coconut Ice Cream. We would recommend all but the chicken kabat, We will look for a replacement for it. On the previous visit we have different dishes, the mango salad being the only repeat order."

  • "We started with the samosas which were large and very tasty. The Black Tea salad is a combination of many tastes and textures; this is really a must try dish. We also shared the chicken pumpkin stew and the lamb kubet, which is similar to Mongolian lamb. It should be noted that this is a wine only establishment, no bar, Nice selection but a bit pricey. The staff was very helpful in making selections and clearing dishes. Noise level rose as the place filled up. We definitely plan on returning to try some other food items."

  • "I've been here for lunch 4 times and can't get enough of the tea leaf salad. Enjoy the fiery tofu and an eggplant dish. All their dishes are good, but certain ones really stand out and I plan to be back soon and try something new. The staff couldn't be friendlier and more accommodating. Yes, it is loud, but these days it seems that all the restaurants are loud. This is not as loud as some of the places along Laurel."

  • "We've been to Rangoon Ruby several times. The food is consistently good, with unique spicing and sauces. We have been working our way down the menu. Their signature dishes, including the tea leaf salad, are always tasty and very special. The service is outstanding, timely and responsive. Good wine list and draft beer list."

  • "Another great meal at another great find! This is one of Laurel's hidden gems. We were able to get a same-day reservation for four at 6:30, but by the time we left, the restaurant was packed. Our order was prompt, fresh, and tasted amazing!"

  • "My husband and I went to this restaurant for a date night ,and we were a little disappointed. This restaurant is very loud, so we could barely hear each other talk and the tables are very close together. The food was ok, but maybe we ordered the wrong dishes. Probably will not go back."
    Dined on 2/1/2014
  • "The food at Rangoon Ruby's was good - full of flavor. But there are too many tables pushed close together, and the noise level is unbearable. We could not talk to our fellow diners across the table, and couldn't wait to leave the restaurant. This really spoiled our dining experience. We've enjoyed this restaurant in Palo Alto, but I wouldn't recommend going to the San Carlos location with friends. Sorry to give this negative review. The management needs to muffle the sounds booing off the floor and walls."

  • "This is a regular favorite for my wife and I. A great place for different food. The Tea Leaf Salad is the best. We are making it through the rest of the menu trying different dishes. Everything is great."

  • "This was our first time here. We've been spoiled by more authentic Burmese restaurants in SF that aren't as fancy but tastier and much provide much better value. The staff is really great -- great service and so accommodating with kids so we really appreciated that aspect, especially for such a seemingly fancy restaurant. But unfortunately given the price and value I don't think we'll go back."

  • "We recently enjoyed an amazing dinner at Rangoon Ruby's. The staff were terrific and the meal was served up fast and hot.. Everyone from the hostess to the server to the owner took great care of us. The food was great! So flavorful and varied. It was a delicious cross between Indian and Chinese and it did not disappoint. The tea leaf salad was particularly delicious. Very different from anything we had tried before. We tried a new California wine on their recommendation and thoroughly enjoyed it! We will definitely be back!"

  • "Tea Leaf Salad is a must order. Veggie Kebats, Egg-Okra, Garlic Noodles - mmm. You cannot go wrong with Rangoon Ruby!"

  • "I've been to Rangoon Ruby in PA previously and did not think it was great, but gave the San Carlos location a try on Christmas eve as there were not a lot of options on Christmas eve in San Carlos. First impression was the ambience was much more upscale and brighter than the PA. We had the Pad Thai, Garlic Noodles, Sesame Beef, and the Fiery Tofu. All were tasty, but my fave was the Pad Thai-just enough spices and tanginess, plus just the right amount of sauce. I hate my Pad Thai dry and/or mushy...this was neither. Definitely recommend if you are looking for an Asian option in SC."

  • "This was my second time dining at Rangoon Ruby's, and it was every bit as wonderful as the first time. If I had to choose one food to eat for the rest of my life, it would be the Samosa Salad all day, every day. They bring all the ingredients to the table and assemble it there while explaining what each delectable ingredient is. Description: Salad with vegan samosas, cabbage, onions, cilantro, cucumber, yellow bean powder, fried garlic and cilantro. tamarind dressing with crushed red chili added to taste. It's just so light and yet filling. I'm also an eggplant fan, and thought their version of sauteed eggplant with garlic, scallions and sweet chili sauce was amazing, especially on top of a spoonful of coconut rice! Service was excellent!"

  • "We went with two other couples and were very pleased with the wide selection of entrees we ordered. The tea leaf salad, crispy chicken, spicy noodles and coconut rice were all excellent. News of this place will travel fast. I wish them much continued success."

  • "Interesting, well made food that's unlike most any other cuisine. Excellent service, presentation. Able to easily accommodate my gluten-free needs yet still give my wife and I plenty to choose from. Crowded interior, but noise level better than you would think despite that. Expensive for San Carlos, but a definite cut above other nearby restaurants. Highly recommend."

  • "From the hostess to the waiter to the manager, this place had exceptional service. I was so impressed that we were asked upon our arrival if we had ever tried that style of food before, and given an explanation as we were sitting down. Our waitress was patient and kind and had great suggestions for us, as we were new to the type of food. The manager came around at the end of the meal, joked with us and cleared our plates. A smooth operation from start to finish."

  • "We had dinner here on Friday night and it was just what I was hoping for - tasty food in a nice place among other happy diners. Bingo! The place is small and the tables are a bit close together but the owners have kept the decor open and bright so personally The service was the best I have had in a long time. He was prompt, helpful and attentive but not hovering or overbearing and did not rush us. We started with the tea leaf salad which is what says "Burmese food" to me. It was tossed table side and was delicious. Then we had the Rangoon noodles and the minted jalapeno pork. Noodles were rich and delicious while the pork was spicy but nothing special. Portion sizes were good and we could not finish both dishes.I will definitely be back."

  • "I had been to Rangoon Ruby's in Palo Alto so was thrilled to see that they had opened one in San Carlos. I was looking to take clients out to lunch, and they LOVED it also. The tea leaf salad is completely addictive, and everything else we ordered was delicious. Our service was excellent as well, including the manager coming over a couple of times to make sure we were good. I can't recommend this place enough...I just love their menu and I haven't been disappointed with anything that I've ordered."

  • "Not quite authentic but it's close enough. Not usually use lettuce and there's too little of dried shrimp to even taste any. Also tried their palata, it's okay and their pumpkin pork stew was the best, I loved it."

  • "We had the shrimp kebat and the chicken curry and both were excellent. The menu has some very interesting Burmese dishes that I will definitely return to try. The heat levels were described perfectly -- 3 stars will warm your mouth but not make you scream in pain. The tables are a little close together, but they were not busy so this wasn't a problem."
