Diner Reviews
  • "Took a group of folks from around the globe with me to this local neighborhood gem. Everyone loved the food and the service was very good."

  • "I was so excited to try Rangoon Ruby after checking out the menu on-line. Unfortunately the food was very mediocre. I went with a group of people so we ordered 5 different dishes. The best by far was the shrimp curry. It had the most flavor and the shrimp was not battered or deep fried. The sesame chicken was battered and so overcooked that it was chewy. The beef curry had no flavor and the chunks of meat where tough. The noodle dish looked so appetizing when they brought it to the table, but we were all so disappointed when we tried it. The noodles were mushy and the dish lacked focus and flavor. Finally, the pork was chopped in small pieces and again, had no distinct flavor."

  • "We went for lunch to celebrate a friend's birthday. We all had great food; the mango salads were wonderful and the hot entrees with rice also were good. the waiter we had could not have been more helpful; he was attentive but not intrusive. They brought the guest of honor strawberry ice cream with a sparkler in it for dessert. The restaurant is very pretty and inviting."

  • "This is my new "favorite" restaurant. The food is tasty and each dish has a different flavor. The service is good and unhurried. You do not get the feeling that they want to turn your table."

  • "Great food and good service My major complaint is that you really can't have a conversation in this restaurant The noise level is deafening unless there are only a few customers which is hardly never"

  • "Fresh, tasty, hot, distinctive flavors from that part of the world served in a very attractive but noisy setting. It only takes one noisy table of revelers to set your teeth on edge but the food is sooooo good. But watch out for the noodles. They are overcooked especially the rice noodles. There are so many good dishes to choose from. I always start with Smoked Tea Leaf Salad which is best in Bay Area. Just forget the noodles. I like the Burmese rice and all the hot dishes. Yes, I have traveled in Burma"

  • "We found Burmese Cuisine not to our taste. We had a lovely waitress, Kim, who made suggestions to us since we were unfamiliar with most of the food. Unfortunately, we found the entrees quite foreign to our taste buds and therefore did not enjoy our meal. Many people have recommended Rangoon Ruby(and many of the diners present seemed to relish their meals) and we think those who wish to experience different fares, may really enjoy the restaurant."

  • "Food very good, loved the tea leaf salad. Prices are high for this type of restaurant but okay for special occasion just not regularly."

  • "Carlos is the best waiter! His fun personality makes the restaurant that much better."

  • "Sitting at an outdoor table in front of the restaurant for lunch was enjoyable. Great people watching! A nice menu selection of both salads and entrees. Prices are high given the slow service and lack of attention to detail. I had to get up twice to ask for my waiter. Took more than ten minutes for my credit card to be returned. Need more staff to handle luncheon guests."

  • "Brought a group with me from all over the US and none of them had ever tried Burmese food. They all loved it and really enjoyed the experience. All the food was fantastic and everyone went home happy and full."

  • "The Tea leaf Salad is a special dish. I also love the mango chicken. I need to try something new and undoubtedly I will love it."

  • "We arrived at 9 PM, they had the table ready for us, a party of 6. The food is excellent, service great and the wait staff very attentive. One of the best restaurants in San Carlos and we will be back for sure!"

  • "This would be one of the very best restaurants in the area if it were not for the deafening noise level. They apparently had a restaurant architect design a ceiling with beautiful curves, but which I suspects amplifies the sound. Food and service were fabulous, but my wife and I almost had to use sign language to communicate. Their employs will undoubtedly have workers' compensation claims for hearing loss."

  • "Average food. Average service. Uncomfortably loud and tables way too close together. "

  • "I love this restaurant, I usually request a table by the window. I cannot have lunch or dinner without ordering the Tea Leaf Salad, it is one of the super stars of the menu and we never ever have left overs. This is one of my favorite local restaurants and whenever I have someone from out of town visiting, I take them here because I know it will be a home run each time. This last time my guest ordered the coconut water and it truly was coconut water served in the coconut itself, delicious and gorgeous!. "

  • "This is the fourth time I've been to Rangoon Ruby. It's better each time I return. Must have the Tea Leaf Salad on each visit. "
    Dined on 4/21/2014
  • "Food and service were great. Noise level was very high, unfortunately. "
    Dined on 4/18/2014
  • "Appetizers were excellent; sesame beef is addictive...hated the broccoli dish which tasted of acrid burned garlic...in some areas the tables are too too close together so the servers can barely squeeze by and it's difficult to enjoy conversation because strangers are about 10 inches from your table...all in all nice food, but ambience could use tweaking.."
    Dined on 4/10/2014
  • "Since it was our first time there we let the server order for us. We had a few apetizers including salad which were outstanding. The entries were equally good."
    Dined on 4/7/2014
  • "This was our 6th time eating here. We have several favorite dishes that do not disappoint: tea leave salad (a delight of flavors and textures), basil chili beef, mango chicken and kebat shrimp. The service has always been very good and ambiance is light and modern. Even though it is a smallish place, they make the most of their space."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Love the food here - will definitely be back. The Burmese Chicken Salad is one of my favorites! We were there on a Saturday night so it was packed, and while the noise level was loud at that time, you could still each other talk. The service was awesome!"
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "So crowded and so loud but food and service were worth it. I would go next time before 6 or near 8 so the noise level might be better"

  • "Great samosas, really delicious. Great atmosphere, and fantastic customer service. Pad Thai was good, could have been better though. in general we really enjoyed it. would be great if you had a kids menu."

  • "We had a wonderful time at Rangoon. The food and service was excellent. The odd thing is they don't serve coffee, not even drip, so when we ordered dessert and the tried to order coffee, they said "you can go across the street and get some at Peets..." Really? So strange. It ended an otherwise wonderful experience oddly."

  • "First went here for lunch and loved it! The tea leaf salad is wonderful and the service is very good! Went the second time for dinner and had another great experience. The salmon was delicious, as was the Ruby's shrimp and mango chicken. The eggplant was very good. The catfish was just so so -- too many bones to enjoy so didn't finish it. Mango chicken needed more sauce. Love this place with the only complaint being that there need to be more vegetables included in the main dishes. They are basically just meat or veg with sauce. I ordered broccoli added to my dish for extra charge and they had to check with the chef first. Ordered the string beans as a side and they were the highlight!! The desserts are very good -- especially the ice cream"

  • "We've been here several times and continue to bring visitors. The experience is always consistently excellent. Quick food service, great food flavor and great staff. I find a new favorite dish every time. Coconut Rice is delicious. Latest favorite is the Yellow Tofu with Red Curry. Very good."

  • "I was very disappointed with Rangoon. Their tea salad lacked the citrus from lime and was dry. Their curries did not vary and it tasted as though they used the same curry for all the dishes and just changed the ingredients put into the curry. The place was so noisy that we had to shout at our table to talk to eachother. Rangoon is not even close to Mingalaba in Burlingame. I was hoping that Rangoon would be as good as it would give me an alternative to Burmese food because Mingalaba is always so busy. I frequently have visited Burma (Miyanmar) and am there at least once per year."

  • "Would give Rangon Ruby 5 stars but for one issue. The ambience, service and food are all wonderful but it was horrendously noisy- 5 bombs for sure. Impossible to carry on a conversation. It's a small place so don't know there's anything you can do about it. But if you value conversing with friends I would eat outside if the weather's okay."

  • "The first edition of this restaurant remains in Palo Alto and is also superb. HIghly recommended for prompt and very attentive service, large menu with an excellent selection, not to mention the food is especially tasty and not commonly found in other restaurants: pea leaves were over-the-top as was pork and pumpkin stew,"
    Dined on 3/23/2014
  • "I have been here and to the PA location several times. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. I've never been to a restaurant where everything I try is amazing. I could eat here every night!!"

  • "Burmese food is a fusion of Indian, Chinese, Malay and Thai flavors and Rangoon Ruby does an excellent job of displaying it in their dishes. This is my second visit. We were a group of six and had cat fish soup, raw mango salad, the salmon, lamb with basil, chicken Kabat, and Garlic Noodle. For desert we shared fried bananas with mango ice cream and dessert Palata with Coconut Ice Cream. We would recommend all but the chicken kabat, We will look for a replacement for it. On the previous visit we have different dishes, the mango salad being the only repeat order."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "We started with the samosas which were large and very tasty. The Black Tea salad is a combination of many tastes and textures; this is really a must try dish. We also shared the chicken pumpkin stew and the lamb kubet, which is similar to Mongolian lamb. It should be noted that this is a wine only establishment, no bar, Nice selection but a bit pricey. The staff was very helpful in making selections and clearing dishes. Noise level rose as the place filled up. We definitely plan on returning to try some other food items."

  • "We've been to Rangoon Ruby several times. The food is consistently good, with unique spicing and sauces. We have been working our way down the menu. Their signature dishes, including the tea leaf salad, are always tasty and very special. The service is outstanding, timely and responsive. Good wine list and draft beer list."

  • "Great cuisine- fresh, a culinary experience with the right blend of meats and rice dishes."

  • "I've been here for lunch 4 times and can't get enough of the tea leaf salad. Enjoy the fiery tofu and an eggplant dish. All their dishes are good, but certain ones really stand out and I plan to be back soon and try something new. The staff couldn't be friendlier and more accommodating. Yes, it is loud, but these days it seems that all the restaurants are loud. This is not as loud as some of the places along Laurel."
    Dined on 3/5/2014
  • "Another great meal at another great find! This is one of Laurel's hidden gems. We were able to get a same-day reservation for four at 6:30, but by the time we left, the restaurant was packed. Our order was prompt, fresh, and tasted amazing!"

  • "This restaurant is very special. Invite someone who is adventurous. The tea leaf salad is fresh and artfully served. The Mango Chicken is excellent! Next time I will experiment further! Always a treat!"
