Diner Reviews
  • "Must try the tea leaf salad! The Yellow Tofu Red currybis to die for.. all these to be eaten with burmese rice as originally expected!"

  • "I love the green tea leaf salad and the Samusa soup. So many healthy things for vegetarians here!"

  • "Tea leaf salad and garlic noodles were both very good- best I've ever had. Eggplant curry and veggie curry both very bland. Sweet coconut rice dessert...great everywhere, isn't it?!"

  • "I've been here on a first date, on a girls' night, and a work-team outing :) It's been great for all three! Make reservations in advance because tables get taken up real quick. Love the mango chicken, tea leaf salad, and palata! They had fresh coconut water (in the coconut!), which is quite awesome :) They are nice enough to give it with the spoon so you can get the flesh too :D Did not like the fried coconut pudding dessert so much."

  • "The food was delicious, especially the garlic noodles with braised duck! The fish (I believe it was called mango asai) was succulent, the light sour flavor of mango perfectly cutting the fish. The service was fabulous!"

  • "I would recommend the trek to San Carlos over Palo Alto simply because of the servers. It's the same great food,--and really the Tea Leaf Salad can't be beat! -- but the servers were constantly intrusive and kept trying to up-sell and over-sell the food. We ordered a wine, and were immediately told we should purchase a more expensive (that is to say THE most expensive) one on the menu. We ordered one bowl of rice, because not all of us were going to eat rice, and were told to order 2 more...it became annoying. Our plates were cleared before we even finished eating! The same thing happened to the party next to us. Someone needs to retrain the staff and insert a little friendliness into the place."

  • "We have been eating at this place for years and have never tried the coconut the pudding. Shame on us, it was not what we expected but it was delicious. Especially after a light lunch sharing our staple 3 dishes, Northern Fried Tofu, Tea Leaf Salad (no protein) A MUST HAVE, and pea leaf"

  • "The food was very good and our waitress made good recommendations. However, we felt like the staff was constantly pushing us to leave."

  • "Good spot for hungry people. Food is delicious: green mango salad, calamari, shrimp dish. Pumpkin port (pork tasty; pumpkin tasteless). seemingly unlimited menu. Dishes offered spicy, medium or mild. We sat near front with window open on sidewalk and still had to shout across the table to be heard. It must be impossible to hear in back of the restaurant. Busy scene. Attractive young people in and out, crowded tables, people waiting outside for a table."

  • "Good food, but way too noisy and tables are way too close to each other. Corkage at $25 for a restaurant of this caliber is a definite turn off. Tea leaf salad is way over rated and salty. The mango salad is a far better option with more suttle flavors. The palata is basically an Indian paratha with a coconut chicken curry, that is a tease more than a curry dish that you can enjoy with the palata & it's not cheap at $11. The restaurant needs to revisit the qty of curry they give with the palata. Catfish lacked the flavors, but garlic eggplant was flavorful. Fried banana dessert was as good as it can get. Two thumbs up to the servers."

  • "Drinks were hit or miss, mine was not well mixed. Food was fantastic though."

  • "Fried tofu (the first listed) was astounding. The sesame beef was fantastic. Could pass on the Rangoon noodle. Mango chicken was good not great. Helpful server re nut allergy. Tasty cucumber tap water. Will be back."

  • "What a find! We loved everything we tried, especially the tea leaf salad...really a first class meal. It was our first time, and our server was very knowledgable and helpful, and right on top of the pacing. Our only quibble was in how loud it was...very hard to hear the conversation at the table. Probably better to go at a quieter time of day instead of prime evening time."

  • "Burmeese shrimp was great as usual. Asked for spicey and it came out great."

  • "Variety and taste are sub par when compared to Pagan in San Francisco and Burma Superstar in Oakland"

  • "The guy at the door, checking computer reservations, was not very friendly and the hostess who took us to our table was unbelievably surly. Did not crack a smile at anything. Yikes! If you don't like people, don't go in the hospitality business. However our waitress made up for it working nonstop and very efficiently in the most cramped space imaginable, and yet she kept on smiling (Kelsey, I think?) Good decor, great busboys and servers. Drink (Singapore sling) was watery. Big drawback: the tables are packed like sardines and the noise is deafening, so you end up just wanting to rush through your delicious food and wanting to leave. For that reason, we are not sure we would go back."

  • "The restaurant was very crowded and service was haphazard. We ordered two dishes, one was bad, the other very mediocre. Don't go to this restaurant"

  • "love this place! even though it is not part of Burmese Superstar in SF , they have the same menu...can't get enough of the Chili lime Lamb and the tea salad...every thing was so great..introduced my niece and nephew to this place....they are hooked on it too..."

  • "What a fun restaurant in Palo Alto that is always busy with hungry guests. For those who aren't familiar with Burmese food, it is reminiscent of many Thai dishes (herbs like mint and basil) but with a somewhat Indian/Chinese flair. The food is absolutely delicious and service is typically quite good. Word to the wise, the dishes can be made to any "spice" level desired, but they are generally pretty safe up until the "very spicy" level, where the kitchen likely begins to feel a challenge. Those looking to clear their nostrils should try the Basil Chili Beef spiced to the nines."

  • "Rangoon Ruby has really stepped up their food. Our last three meals here (Palo Alto location) have been memorable and I find myself craving their food! The highlights of our last meal were the Tea Leaf Salad, and the Pea Shoots in Black Bean Sauce. I also love their Chicken Kebat and Garlic Noodles, which are staples for us every time we eat here. They also have a good selection of local beers on tap, but I'm not a fan of their cocktails (too sweet). All in all, everybody we've taken to this restaurant has loved it, and we highly recommend it if you like Asian flavor profiles."

  • "Every time that my wife and I eat at this place it never disappoints. You have to try the tea leaf salad and pea leaves (if in season)"

  • "It was packed when I went last on Friday evening, but food and service remained outstanding. Staff communicated well with each other so very smooth service even though every table was busy and turn around was fast. Food is healthy and something different. Love this local gem."

  • "This is a wonderful restaurant and dining experience all the way around. The food could be considered by many to be "world class" and it is definitely among the most unique and compelling dining experiences to be had in the area. There is a reason why it isn't easy to book a table at this wonderful place; more and more people are discovering that this is truly a "food paradise" in Palo Alto. I have taken a number of "uninitiated" guests to Rangoon Ruby, including a variety of skeptical people ("But we don't like 'Asian' food;" "What does 'Burmese" food even taste like?") ABSOLUTELY to a person EVERY guest that I have taken to this five star restaurant has raved about it afterwards. EVERY guest. GO FOR IT. You will be glad that you did."

  • "The food was fantastic (especially the garlic noodles with roasted duck), and the drinks really do go straight to your head! Our server, Ricardo, was the perfect blend of funny and professional. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "We have had lunch there several times and are never disappointed! It will take us a while to try everything on the menu, but we are determined to make it! The San Carlos location is our next destination for dinner. "

  • "The food was delicious, especially the Samosa salad. Service was very good and attentive. However, I was unable to hear the people sitting across the table from me. We left and went to another restaurant for dessert so we could have a discussion - so I wouldn't recommend it for a business dinner."

  • "The Burmese in general seems to be similar in style and service to Chinese, with a bit of Vietnamese and Thai mixed in. Be sure to try the Tea Leaf Salad. It's mixed at your table, and it was unique in style, appearance and taste. But good. The entrees are fine, but not really special. And the price was surprisingly low."

  • "I enjoy Burmese food because of the variety of flavors & blend of cultural influences unique to Burma, that can literally be tasted. Rangoon Ruby did a splendid job of preparing food that delighted not just my palate, but those of my fellow book club members who enjoyed lunch there for our last meeting. The tea leaf salad, lemongrass chicken, and garlic eggplant were all wonderful. "

  • "We were a group of 5 on a tight schedule (movie plans), and we were handled efficiently and courteously. Food was interesting and tasty, as always."

  • "It is great to have a Burmese restaurant in Palo Alto. The place is extremely crowded and feels cramped, but the food more than makes up for it. They have lots of vegetarian options - we keep going back just to get through all their veggie dishes. Service is very friendly and quite prompt. But it is hard to have a conversation without shouting over the ambient noise or having the next table listen in. But it all comes back to the food - that is what will bring people back over and over again. And the mixed drinks are great - even if a bit on the sweet side."

  • "This was my third time to Rangoon Ruby and each time has been an excellent dining experience. Be sure to try their specialty Tea Leaf Salad. "
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "Food tasted good but tables packed so close together I felt like I was dining with strangers. Very very expensive. Would not go back. "
    Dined on 5/22/2014
  • "Great find... Food was excellent.. Especially enjoyed the tea leaf salad. Tables close to each other thus noise level was high which made conversations a challenge. Service was attentive."
    Dined on 5/21/2014
  • "I hav been there for lunch and dinner - enjoyed both. The service is friendly - they are really good about letting you know the ingredients if you are allergic to anything. They also, accommodate especial requests. I love there tender coconut water - love scraping the coconut and eating it as long as I am not with someone formal. Must order is Tea leaf salad. Also, loved their Samosa soup. If you are celebrating a b'day be sure to order a dessert with a request for a candle - you will love the surprise. (even though the dessert is not the greatest)"

  • "I was at Rangoon Ruby with my team from work for a business lunch. We ordered a lot of food to share and it was decent! The service really ruined the experience for me and the rest of the group. When we ordered our meal, our server clearly stated that rice comes with our dishes. But when we got our bill, he charged us for all the rice that was supposed to come with the dishes. When I asked him about it, he said the dishes don't come with rice because it's "family style". He should've made that clear when I asked him (during the order). It was extremely disappointed because he completely lied to us and refused to take it off our bill. It wasn't a big amount so we ended up paying for the rice. Make sure you don't make the same mistake. "

  • "Very nice servers, we were crammed into a very small space, high noise levels, good food on general but my curry was very bland, with some vegetables over cooked. Burma Superstar is so much better. Overpriced for quality of food & ambiance."

  • "despite having a packed restaurant for mother's day lunch, we were seated right away and our servers were super attentive. they cleared our plates as they were emptied, filled our water glasses, brought our bill out in a timely fashion, even were nice enough to give an extra drink umbrella to our kids. every dish of food was very tasty and spicy. we ate everything family-style. a great restaurant, so glad they opened up in Palo alto."

  • "Quality and quantity were almost excellent. Service generally also nearly excellent. WAY TOO NOISY. CROWDED tables."

  • "I have been here a few times now and enjoy it more every time I go. The food is of great quality and the one time I got something I didn't like they quickly replaced it. "
