Diner Reviews
  • "Provenance is open for dinner in Wednesdays when the museum is open late. You cannot ask for a better way to break up the monotony of the work week than to enjoy deliciously prepared food (themed to current exhibitions no less) in a gorgeous, elegant room, followed by a stroll through some if the best art in the country! This is the kind of experience that makes University Circle such a gem!!!"

  • "The dining options at both the Cleveland Museum of Art Provenance Cafe or the Provenance Restaurant and Bar are just terrific. Both rooms offer a special dining experience. We recently visited both and can recommend both depending on the experience you desire. Both restaurants have great food and service with interesting, diverse menus. I would also recommend trying the brunch at Provenance for a really appealing dining experience."

  • "Everyone in my party was very pleased with the food. There was a long wait to get our entrees. It would have been a better had our server been able to stop by our table more frequently. The service was a little slow and I understand the restaurant was busy, but in that case, more servers provide a more positive dining experience."

  • "As usually, we had a wonderful experience at Provenance. One comment: with the doors open between the two areas, the restaurant lost its charm... Dining experience in the area open for public when no parties are there, lacked the usual Provenance warmth and took away a feeling of special experience..."

  • "We had heard so many nice things about this restaurant, and were very disappointed in the food. I had the Waldorf salad, and it had a lot of lettuce, 1/4 of a green apple, about 2 oz. of chicken, and one walnut. For $13, I don't expect to leave hungry! Go next door to the cafe instead, half the price, same owner (Doug Katz), and the food looked better. Just not as elegant an ambience inside, but there are tables in the beautiful new atrium."

  • "GREAT service, outstanding food, fabulous setting. Wonderful new spot in Cleveland. 5-star. Oh yes, and then there is the museum . . . . !"

  • "This was an exceptional experience: wonderful, timely service, great food, and quiet ambiance in a museum setting. Great views outdoors into a park-like setting."

  • "Great food, good service, a lovely view and it's at the Cleveland Museum of Art! What more can you ask?"

  • "Scallops on Califlower --the best......Waitress (can't remember her name) charming and very helpful....the view could be better ..you have that beautifully graded slope outside that lovely window and it is bare....it may belong to the Botanical Garden...in any case it has the potention to be spectacular...looking forward to a return visit.....it was great!"

  • "The food and drinks were absolutely creative and delectable. Will definitely return soon."

  • "Exceeded our expectations. Food was excellently prepared particularly the salmon sandwich and vegetarian option. The view of the garden while eating and the reasonable price makes this restaurant a winner. Ambience is very modern and attractive."

  • "This is a great evening spot with very good food and wine, quiet enough for conversation, and within steps of the best art museum in America. It is worth noting that the museum closes at 9 on the evenings it is open for this nice dinner/museum combination, so worth getting a table no later than about 630-7 if planning to wander after dinner. This is the best kept secret in the Midwest, and worth doing especially for anyone from out of town. Catch the museum beforehand, grab dinner, then finish with another stroll through the museum. Amazing evening."

  • "This meal matched any we have had in Cleveland for $100, and the setting is outstanding, even if you just come to the Museum for the food."

  • "Great opportunity to dine on delicious food served by friendly knowledgeable wait staffers and having a fresh well-made cocktail by William and to view the different galleries! I recommend Provenance to all my in town and out of town visitors! Kudos to Chef Katz, Sarah and the entire staff! Sunday Brunch is also very good! My Crab Quiche was very good filled w/lots of fresh sweet and delicious crab me!"

  • "We were seated promptly at a table by a window. Waited a few minutes longer than I might have liked for a server to approach the table. After that the service was very good. The food was excellent and innovative. We would return. It was our first time there for brunch."

  • "Provenance was the perfect choice for a day at the CMA and my birthday brunch. The food was delicious-I particularly loved the Vietnamese shrimp and crepes and the fruit, muffins, yogurt et. al. at the pre-entrée table were just the right touch. As in all Doug Katz venues-thoroughly delightful!"

  • "The food was mediocre at best. The croque Madame was served cold; the ham was stone cold. Service was very slow and spotty. We waited 15 minutes for a server to greet us and she didn't check back after serving entrees. I asked for a knife but ended up borrowing one from another diner. Ridiculous for a "higher end" restaurant. We won't go back nor recommend."

  • "Have loved all of Doug Katz restaurants. This is no exception. The whole meal was just delightful. The ambiance was fantastic. Great view of outside. The food was incredible. The BEST pastries! I had the Vietnamese crepe which was outstanding. We finished our meal with a tour of the Van Gogh exhibit. Definitely want to do this again both for the food and a great way to start a visit to the Art Museum."

  • "Our dining experience was lovely. Attentive service, good food and wine and a lovely ambience. The menu offers a wide selection of items. Of great fun is the prix fixe menu that reflects the special exhibit at that time. Good value for the money though it is not a cheap evening."

  • "Provenance was off their mark Sunday afternoon. The food, while pricey, is fresh and nicely presented. The service was below par. Special request given to server didn't happen and the meal had to be returned. And, the service was very slow. Hoping this was just a bad day and not a trend."

  • "Every time we go to Provenance, the menu is interesting and different from the last time, and every selection made us glad we ordered it. The Vegetable Carpaccio was beautiful to look at and delectable to eat. My black cod was tender and fresh with a light, Asian sauce that was not too salty. The short rib is a standard, a fork tender and well-seasoned. Dessert was exceptional: macadamia cake with pineapple and home-made vanilla ice cream. The art museum scene is hopping and vibrant on First Fridays, and serene on other nights."

  • "Very nice for Sunday brunch. Our group of five all enjoyed the salad, fruit & breads buffet and the brunch entrees. Three of us had the eggs benedict with trout and our only complaint was that the toasted bread underneath had a strong burnt taste from being placed on a very hot grill. Otherwise, it's a great place to dine & bring friends while visiting the museum."

  • "My experience at Provenance was exceptional. The service and food were wonderful, and I am looking forward to my next visit."

  • "I've had lunch at Provenance twice and loved it. The pricy-ness of the food matches its quality and, if one eschews dessert, it's as affordable as other nice restaurants in University Circle. And the food is better than most, the ambiance lovely, the service very good. The curried vegetable claybread sandwich is terrific as is the butternut squash bisque. The desserts are huge and delicious - I'd recommend ordering one for two to share unless you are prepared to eat a lot. Once I had wine and I would quibble with the amount that is served and its high end price for a glass. The waitress was VERY careful in pouring the meagre amount into the glass. This makes me less eager to have dinner there, a time when I'd be most likely to order wine."

  • "We enjoyed a very good dining experience in one of Cleveland's world class treasures The Cleveland Museum of Art. Plan a visit to both for a great experience!"

  • "We've been to Provenance before for lunch and dinner and really enjoyed it, but our most recent visit was a disappointment. Service was a bit spotty - once we had our entrees it was very difficult to get our server back. Portions seemed to be considerably smaller and the baked pasta was incredibly dry and overbaked. I'll go back to Provenance, but won't' be in a big hurry to do so."

  • "Great place for a Sunday date! Healthy fares in cheery romantic atmosphere. Great view through floor to ceiling windows. Tasty Champagne specialties. I could not think of a better way to spnd a Sunday afternoon."

  • "On 1st impression, the restaurant was smaller than expected, and resembled an airline club lounge. Overall, it is CRAMPED. Our waiter had to reach across our table to pour coffee (i.e., there was no room to walk around). Service was very good. 2nd impression was that our table was too small for a party of 4; the table was wobbly and we had to level it with some sugar packets; the plastic chairs were uncomfortable and took up much needed floor space. The food was acceptable. Nothing exceptional. The Vietnamese crepes were okay. The Croque Madame was good, but the crust was hard and inedible. The quiche was quiche. The chef's table with pastries and fruit was good. The breakfast cocktails were weak. All this at a premium price."

  • "We had a good friend in from Minnesota and met her for lunch at the Cleveland Museum of Art. I had heard that this restaurant was wonderful and did not disappoint us! Granted, it was lunch, so it was not as crowded as it would have been for dinner, so it's difficult to comment on the atmosphere, other than we had a lovely table by a large window which was great! The food was wonderful. Between four of us we had the trout, the scallops and the Waldorf salad which were all delicious! Our server was attentive, yet never over-bearing. Loved it!"

  • "We had a spectacular afternoon and evening at the wonderful Cleveland Museum of Art ---- how fortunate we are to have an outstanding museum AND an outstanding restaurant in the same place! Doug Katz' menu is creative, healthy, and delicious! We will definitely repeat this experience as there is much more to see at the Museum, and many more dishes we would also like to try!"

  • "Nice quiet atmosphere. Perfect for a bite after taking in part of the museum. The scallops were great, but our two entrees were merely good. Convenient if you're going to the museum, but I wouldn't recommend it as a destination of it's own."

  • "the restaurant is beautiful, with great views; service very attentive; food was okay which was a bit disappointing - main course portions were smaller than I expected although tasty; and dessert portions large enough to share - which would have been good to know before ordering. It was an expensive lunch by my standards. it was my first visit and I will try again."

  • "The setting, inside the Cleveland Museum of Art, just below the new Asian Art wing, is magical! The prix fixe menu is delightful and varied, different each time we have gone. My salad frisee covered tasty, surprise, warm tidbits that blended perfectly with the cool, perfectly dressed greens. The entrees were very good, but my potato pancake was a little too greasy for my taste. My husband's pasta was delicious, but the mushrooms it promised were disappointing in number and variety. The desserts, however, were amazing: a rich and flavorful lemon curd tart, and a chocolate hazelnut dacquoise (a meringue with rich mousse filling) were both to die for."

  • "Provenance stood up to the discerning eye and palate of our visitor from France. His skepticism was palpable when he learned we were going to dine within the Cleveland Museum of Art. Skepticism morphed into satisfaction from the moment we walked into the warm, contemporary dining space of Provenance. Our brunch, from the spicy bloody marys, perfectly baked chocolate croissants and the succulent eggs with hashbrowns, was excellent. Will we return, mais oui!"
