  • "We had heard so many great things about this restaurant and were disappointed when we had mediocre food and wine. The set up of the tables feels a bit odd. The ribs were chewy and overcooked. The mac and cheese was lackluster. We ordered a French wine and were brought a wine from the same region, but different producer and different vintage."

  • "Great service, warm and friendly atmosphere. True Charleston dinning experience! Menu is complete, good honest choices. Never dissapointed."

  • "To say that Poogan's Porch stands out in the tapestry of food in Charleston is an understatement. The food was excellent, while not overbearing in its descriptions or presentation. Options were broad enough for children and adults, and portions were appropriate. Our children marveled at how good Southern cooking can be - our usually skeptical teenage daughter wanted to write an epic poem about the fried chicken. While tucking myself into the Calabash seafood combo, it was easy to notice the impressions on not only my family but those around the dining room, ranging from overwalked tourists to local folks. I would recommend Poogan's to anyone - it presents itself and the historic place it occupies head and shoulders above the rest!"

  • "One of our favorites in Charleston! Ambience super. Delicious fried chicken.Classics of the South that stand alone as well as a twist on many favorites!"

  • " Poogan's Porch is truly an amazing restaurant. The atmosphere is what Charleston is known for. The food was top notch as well as the courteous staff. I was amazed when the server explained in detail how our food was prepared. He went the "extra mile" to learn from the chef's to describe each of their different dishes. Great job to the entire staff."

  • "Although I didn't expect the restaurant to be in an old historic home, the ambiance was nice. The side dishes with the entree (ravioli pasta with pimento cheese and crab cake style hash crowns were delicious ). The biscuits were also wonderful, but a special butter with them would have added to their flavor (perhaps a honey butter). I liked the wine list but would have like more specialty drink options. People with health issues may need to be mindful of the stairs (leading up to the porch and inside the restaurant). Overall we enjoyed the ambiance, the service was excellent and the food was delicious."

  • "We have been visiting this great city for several years and have yet to visit Poogan's Porch. I'm so glad we did this year. It was an amazing experience. Quaintly Charelston with great food. The biscuits were off the hook and the pimento cheese fritters were divine. Dessert was great as well. It will be an annual tradition to eat here, year after year!"

  • "Loved the ambiance of this renovated old house. Each room was different and I felt we got the most intimate dining room on the first floor at the front. Lots of interesting old pictures of Charleston in an earlier era. Food was very good and the presentation was very nice. My she-crab soup was the best we have ever tasted. A bit on the pricey side but worth it."

  • "Food was average to good. This was the second time for us. The front porch was a nice place to eat with a small group. Upstairs was too noisy to have a relaxed conversation. Prices are reasonable but no salad. It isn't expensive to provide a simple garden salad."

  • "We absolutely love the food at Pooghan's Porch. We have been in Charleston twice and ate there both times. We also drove from Savannah to Charleston a couple years ago JUST to eat at Pooghan's Porch, the food is that good!"

  • "It was the BEST meal we had in Charleston, the only one we will actually remember and talk about for years to come! It was affordable, delicious, and lovely in presentation. Our waitress was a sweetheart! The hostess was the only rather unfriendly person we met in Charleston (we asked to change our table due to the cold air conditioning blowing on us as soon as we sat down--she wasn't happy with the request). We actually were moved to a better table by a window."

  • "We had a lovely evening ! Friends had recommended this quaint restaurant to us 1 year ago when we relocated. So sorry we waited so long. All around us diners shared their pleasure with the food and our wonderfully animated waitress. We will surely return."

  • "Poogans Porch is quite the treat. I ordered the shrimp and grits which was amazing and the best I've had compared to shrimp and grits entrees at other restaurants that I've been to. Other noteable dishes that I would like to try next time is the "Plantation Fried Chicken" (it was actually stuffed with collards). The "Cast Iron Pork Chop" looked amazing as well. I've never seen a pork chop so big. I did go for dinner. Next time I would like to try brunch I'm sure it will not disappoint..."

  • "Visiting from out of town, Saturday night dinner with my wife and 2 daughters. The hardest part was deciding what to order, everything on the menu sounded so good. We all agreed it was one of the best restaurant meals we had ever had. Our server was very friendly and helpful, and the service overall was top notch. When in Charleston, Poogan's Porch is not to be missed."

  • "Great food and atmosphere. Very charming venue in historical district. So many great options to choose from. Sarah, our server did a great job helping us decide and we were not disappointed. Also, loved the history behind the building. So many great restaurants to choose from but we are glad we chose this one."

  • "My family loved the atmosphere and food om this restaurant! It's fun eating in an old house named after a dog (R.I.P. Statue in thr front yard)?? The food was awesome; I had the melt-in-your mouth scallops, while others had the fresh Carolina shrimp and the tasty Shrimp and Grits. We were too full for dessert. Our family loved it!"

  • " We were seated at a nice table by the window and everyone we came in contact with was friendly and helpful. There is a large, varied selection of entrees and we all enjoyed our meals. It is a beautiful old house and someplace very "Charleston" to take folks from out of town."

  • "We went here for my birthday on a Sunday evening. It was very crowded but we came early and only had to wait a few minutes to get seated. The servers were very friendly and personable. I could tell they sincerely wanted to make the guest feel comfortable and have a good time. My husband is not the adventurous type when it comes to food while I am. I found that we both found delicious food that we enjoyed. My husband got the Plantation Chicken which he licked the plate clean. The Fried Oyster Salad is the best one I have had in Charleston yet. The food is upscale without being too pretentious. Great Southern comfort food!"

  • "My boyfriend and I dined here as a slightly less expensive option to Husk (although we stopped by Husk beforehand for a drink and will be making reservations for our next trip to Charleston). My boyfriend, who is more critical about food than I am, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered. Our waiter was very knowledgable and helpful when we couldn't decided between the fried chicken and the ahi tuna. We ended up with the mac and cheese, she-crab soup, the snapper dish, and the ahi tuna dish, all of which were excellent."

  • "This was a great dining experience. We reserved a table on the 2nd floor balcony and had a great breeze and view throughout dinner. The food was amazing and the portions were good. Great wine list too if that's your thing. We would definately eat here again!"

  • "My wife and I went here for a date night and were not disappointed. The food was excellent. I had the grilled pork chops with brussel sprouts and sweet potato gnocchi. My wife had the prime rib with asparagus and blue cheese sauce. Both meals were great and the meat portions were larger than we anticipated. The wedge salad was very tasty and a relatively large. Overall, the portions were large than I expected for a upscale restaurant."

  • "We were at first attracted by the lovely old restored house in historic downtown Charleston. Inside was cozy with a traditional southern ambience in keeping with the locale. The staff was very friendly but not overtly fawning. There was a nice representation of local fare (local seafood, low country cuisine) at the going rates one expects in a tourist area. Overall it was a very pleasant experience, and I'd recommend it for anyone who enjoys great local cuisine with traditional Charleston ambience."

  • "This was our first time at Poogan's Porch. The service, food, and overall atmosphere was completely wonderful. Roxanne, our server was so knowledgable of the menu and answered all questions we had. We ordered crab cakes and tried alligator for the first time as an appetizer. Both were so fresh and delicious! The crab was the best I've ever tasted. For entrees we had buttermilk fries chicken and the duck. Both were freshly cooked and delicious as well. They also had refreshing cocktails. We will definently be back to Poogan's!"

  • "My wife and I were a little disappointed. We were just not impressed with the food. The she crab soup and biscuits were good. the rest of the meal was just ok."

  • "Unfortunately Poogan's is living off the past and its scores are averaged based on previous diner scores inflating the overall rating. The restaurant staff was either not there or interrupting conversations......server staff bringing first courses to the table with "Ta Da" in your ear while your date is talking isn't needed. The special salad was tasty but a disappointment at a high price and serving size of four bites. The entrees were over complicated with too many flavors for the shrimp and grits and burying the poor small shrimp and grits with a thick paste for a sauce. Three scallops the size of a quarter were seared well but again the establishment must have been saving portions for the massive crowds that never showed"

  • "We wanted to have some southern cooking and picked Poogans. The fried chicken was a thick concrete battered chicken and overly salted, the scallops were tasty but again someone must of dumped a bucket of salt in the dish. It was the same for the ribs and the grouper."
