Poogan's Porch, nestled in the heart of historic downtown Charleston, has been a "must eat" establishment since it opened in 1976. Celebrities, politicians, tourists and locals stop by the "Home of Southern Hospitality" to enjoy the Low country/Southern Cuisine. We specialize in creole, jambalaya,… gumbo, she crab soup, local seafood, quail, alligator, fried chicken and the best peanut butter pie, guaranteed. Enjoy dining indoors or outside on our porches or patio. Don't forget to ask about our ghost! Poogan's Porch is open for dinner 365 and Saturday and Sunday brunch. Reservations are recommended for dinner. 843-577-2337. Poogan's Porch was built as a spacious, commodious home in 1888. By 1976, the character of the neighborhood had changed suitably to allow the conversion of the house into a restaurant. The owners sold their home and moved away. A little dog stayed behind. His name was Poogan. From his perch he greeted customers. Poogan passed in '79. This building is his monument.Continued

"We orginally requested a 6 pm reservation and were told that time was not available. We opted to RUSH in order to make a 5:45pm reservation. We were surprised to see at least 5 empty tables around us from 6pm until 6:45pm. Didn't understand why Poogan's Porch could not honor our orginal time request."

"My daughter sometimes suffers from a "nervous stomach" giving her issues where she needs to eat bland foods/salad at times. Unfortunately her stomach started bothering her as we headed to Poogan's Porch. When we asked the waitress if she could just have plain pasta, she gave us a hard time, telling us it was just for childewn under 12, finally said she would talk to the manager, after I insisted. The manager came over and stated the same thing embarrassing my daughter, but finally said yes. In my opinion, they should have just made their customer happy and not embarrassed a teen-ager. We did order an appetize salad and I had a cocktail and dessert, so the bill was high if that was their concern. Also, I did not like my meal, horrible taste"

"This is the best food we had on our trip to South Carolina. The biscuits and honey butter are fabulous but don't fill up! The Mac and cheese is to die for but you will not regret ordering anything on the menu. We dined as a table of 8 people and the service was excellent. Even my picky 12 year old really enjoyed the chicken fingers on the kids menu."

"Excellent food, definitely the main reason to dine here. We were seated in a back room that had a serious lack of ambiance. It didn't seem to match the photos on the website; I'm assuming there are other rooms? The food make the visit worthwhile, but the overall experience could have been better."

"Ordered fried green tomatoes and sweet tea glazed salmon- both were phenomenal. The biscuits were delicious as well. We sat in the back room which was a little noisy. Also I noted a few food stains on the wall next to our table. Other than these complaints, the ambience was nice and felt like an iconic Charleston restaurant. Our server was well groomed and friendly. Our appetizer arrived before the biscuits- about 15 minutes after we were seated. The biscuits didn't make their way to our table until about 5 minutes later. Our entrees arrived at our table about 30 minutes after our arrival. My fiance and parents were in my company and all seemed to enjoy the experience."

"April 2 - We (two couples) had an awesome dinner on the porch. The menu choices were lovely, and we thoroughly enjoyed the porch ambiance, and watching folks saunter by on a warm Charleston evening. Poogan's is happily just off the busy streets of town, but within walking distance of any hotel or bed and breakfast in the historic district. We live in Michigan, and look forward to returning next spring."

"Went for our 8th year anniversary. We had scallops and pork belly for appetizer. It was so good. I had their plantation fried chicken which was stuffed with gouda cheese and spicy collards and served with mashed potatoes and green beans. My husband had their bourboun braised beef brisket. Everything was absolutely delicious, even the John Daly drink was really good. Service was excellent. Will definitely be back!"
