A word from Plantation Gardens
Plantation Gardens Restaurant & Bar is located in a beautifully restored plantation manor on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. Dating back to the 1930's, the estate once served as the plantation manager's home for Hawaii's first sugar plantation, the Koloa plantation. Later, the estate was acquired by the Moir Family who built the world famous gardens that surround the restaurant. Our menu reflects the heritage of old plantation Hawaii, which celebrates the abundance and beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. Our fresh fish is caught daily by local fishermen in waters off Kauai. We use organically grown vegetables and herbs picked fresh on nearby farms and from our own gardens. Guests may choose to dine on our lanai overlooking tranquil gardens, lily ponds and tropical foliage or in our exquisitely refurbished dining room which features gorgeous Brazilian cherry wood floors, woven bamboo tables and plantation ceiling fans.Continued

  • "Great way to end our trip to Kauai. Great atmosphere and very helpful service. The only thing missing was live music!"

  • "The setting is gorgeous in the garden. The food was good but not worth what we paid. The curry is not homemade, some of the items were bland (fritters), and I did not feel like I was getting fine dining with the prices we paid. The bar mixes great drinks, however. The place would benefit from a more experienced chef."

  • "Pretty restaurant but the food just wasn't good...Sorry I'm a foodie"

  • "We found this place and loved the food so much we went back the next night. Excellent salads with local ingredients. Menu included a nice variety and everything was prepared well. Sauces are always a give away and their were so flavorful you enjoyed every bit. Wine list was short, but included enough variety. Also was nice in that it did not only include the high ends....or worse, be priced at four times what they should be. The garden setting is very nice and the inside looked nice as well. They prided themselves on cocktails.....all which looked great. Bottom line, the food quality, preparation, service and ambiance were great."

  • "The host/hostess greeted with friendly smiles. The waitstaff young and very friendly. The food good, light on spices, but a nice menu with some unique and some popular choices. If you enjoy finding notable wines and pairing specifically with foods you'll find their list a little short. Our visit was the first night of a week long stay. It is a very pleasant experience and we're glad we went. While there are plenty of signs for the restaurant you'll probably mumble a couple times 'is this the right way in?'. This restaurant gives the feeling of really wanting to be a fine dining experience but not having quite enough experience or leadership to get there. A very good place to eat at Poipu!"

  • "Plantation Gardens is always a pleasure. The menu has interesting and inventive dishes and everything is perfectly prepared. We had an excellent opah crusted with coconut, and a new salad on the menu is fabulous."

  • "Service was really slow and neither of us liked our food"

  • "Having attended the Prince Kuhio Festival Dinner at the Plantation Garden before, we went with high expectations for a special meal and a special evening. We were disappointed. We chose the pre-fixe, special menu. After enjoying cocktails (not part of the dinner), we had a pleasant, if unspectacular, salad. Then came a steamed, whole mullet (fish) served on vegetables with a side of (tasteless) breadfruit. The mullet was an oily, bony fish that I gave up on after a few bites. I decided to go vegetarian but even they were not satisfying. The desert, a coconut pie/tart was a sugary mix served in an I edible crust. The ladies ate more of their mullet but agreed that it was a poor menu choice that they would not order again."

  • "We had a special night out with our children and grandchild. Despite this being a nice and fancy restaurant in a beautiful garden setting, we were surprised that our 2 year old was welcomed with a kid's menu and high chair. The food was excellent. The bread service was small portion and way overpriced, but didn't really diminish our experience. All the servers were friendly and not fussy."

  • "It was our first dinner in Kauai and a delicious one. The seafood curry was spicy and warmed is up on a windy chilly night."

  • "Our service at Plantation Gardens was excellent. The food was average, good tasty but not fine dining if that's what you are expecting. Though my husband had the same local fish at Postcards in Hanalei and he said this was better!"

  • "This is a lovely restaurant in an old plantation manager's home with wonderful historic pictures on the walls. The restaurant is open to the surrounding gardens which are are lush and beautiful. Our party of six particularly enjoyed the waiter's recommendation of the blackened fish specials for the evening."

  • "We have always enjoyed dining at Plantation Gardens, but I have to say it keeps getting better. The chef has improved some of the old favorites (like the pork tenderloin skewered on sugar cane) and added one wonderful salad. We will be back next week."
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "We were disappointed. None of our dishes ,from the curry to the fish, were seasoned well and none were the least bit special. I think everyone there, from the kitchen to the wait staff, just seems to go through the motions. The wine by the glass menu was very limited and not very good ,and they certainly need to get a better chocolate chip cookie recipe. I think this restaurant needs some new life and enthusiasm!"

  • "Plantation Gardens is perfect for a romantic dinner. The setting (in a garden) is beautiful and the old plantation represents the islands of old. Well worth a night during your visit to Hawaii"

  • "This restaurant was in the condo complex we stayed at and we didn't try it until the last night and we wished we had tried it sooner. It is an old plantation house and it is very open with open sides and some seats on the lanai. The meal was good and the service was great."

  • "We had a fabulous anniversary dinner and had great service. Worth every penny and would look forward to going back."

  • "Nelson our server was really excellent. He made excellent suggestions when asked about the menu entrees. The ambiance of the restaurant is spectacular. Food was Hawaiian plantation style. Not gourmet but substantial food that most of us are accustomed to except it was prepared really well and presented very nicely. A good place to go for a really nice evening. I will go again."

  • "We tried dinners at a few places in Poipu Kauai but this one had an ambience befitting the setting. The food was well prepared and had flavours from the local cuisine fused with 'american'."

  • "We visit Kauai every year and visit this restaurant every year. Food is innovative and enjoyable always. This year also it was again beyond our expectations."

  • "The grounds adjacent to the restaurant are beautiful as you sit and dine on the veranda. Jake the server took special time to explain the menu choices and wine list. His description the the evening special of stir fried sea food made my choice easy. It was the best main course I have had on Kauai. My wife had the appetizer platter as a main course and highly recommends it if one does not have a large appetite. The motif of the dining area is upscale as is the food. We shall return to the venue again and certainly recommend it as an outstanding experience in dining."

  • "Go early and enjoy a walk through the garden and a drink. The garden is beautiful. we had a nice dinner. I liked the seafood cooked in aTi leaf. this is a place for a special dinner. I did not see a child's menu, but I think this is a place more for adults. either we missed the handicap entrance or there really isn't one. the entrance from the road is quite dark."

  • "We had a lovely evening with good friends.. Special drinks were very enjoyable, with good appetizers, our courses were good and the two guys enjoyed their delicious dessert. We were busy talking and our servers left us to enjoy ourselves and we closed the place down! We would return to this lovely restuarant."

  • "Previously liked this place .. but feeling ambivalent this time. One of the joys of this restaurant is eating on the wide lanai of a Hawaiian plantation house amidst a beautiful garden. Unfortunately had ugly canvas / plastic curtains dropped despite a nice sunny day. Ruined the ambiance and view. When asked, the manager said "because it rained last night and the weather is unpredictable". Uh, no wind or a cloud in the sky tonite. Could roll them up and drop them in minutes if needed, but so be it. On with dinner. The service proved to be ... adequate. The food was ... adequate (mine) and excellent (wife). Good for her. Left reasonably satisfied but frustrated that it should have been better. Maybe next time (if there is a next time ...)"

  • "We arrived in Kauai on New Years Eve. Beautiful island! We had reservations at Plantation Gardens purely from internet searching. It was lovely. The servers were very friendly and festive. The indoor/outdoor atmosphere was just what we were hoping for and happily the food was very good. Fireworks were just a block or two away on the beach. Wonderful choice!"

  • "When we were at this restaurant 5 years ago, we loved it. The ambiance is still quite good and the grounds are really nicely manicured. I was so happy to eat out on the porch, which was my request. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. We shared the salad, which they split evenly ahead of time. I was curious about the bread, only to find out you charge $6.00 extra to order it. My husbands ahi dinner was good. My fish in the pouch was bland and not full of flavor, which was a huge disappointment. I built this restaurant up so much in my mind. In fact, we gave our son a gift card to go there three years ago, and he did not like the food. I thought that was strange, but now I know why he reacted that way."

  • "Food was ok, but just fair. They wanted to charge us for bread !! The place was empty and they were fairly dismissive of us. Would not recommend."

  • "There was a wedding, lots of noise and the food was just okay... Would chose a different restaurant for a special occasion."

  • "Great for ambience. Expensive, which is ok if it's worth it, but 2 shrimp, 2 scallops and a tiny piece of fish - who does that feed?"

  • "Have visited for over 30 years. Needs better training of staff. Food is fine, nothing new or trendy. Nice setting in gardens with atmosphere of an old plantation house."

  • "Stellar meal for my fiancees 30th...and although this was her celebration, I had my favorite meal! The mixed seafood in a light coconut curry was delectable. Awesome, down-to-earth, happy to play tour guide servers, to boot. Loved it and can only hope to find myself back there one day."

  • "We were looking forward to our meal at Plantation Gardens. On the bright side, the setting is very nice. Service was very good. Downside - the food. It just was not that good. We were surprised. Too bad."

  • "The Plantation Gardens takes the traditional from a past era and presents it in a fresh new way."
    Dined on 1/5/2014
  • "The ambiance was very tropical-like in an old wooden house. Nice ambiance for a casual-chic dining but in Kauai, everyone still dressed up accompanied with sandals or flip-flops. It is a nice place to have a nice, quiet dinner as most tables are pretty spaced out. And no matter where you sit, it still feels like dining in the 'outdoors'. Too bad we had to rush to eat then pop over to Poipu Beach at Marriott to catch the New Year's Eve fireworks which started promptly at 9.20pm."
