A word from Plantation Gardens
Plantation Gardens Restaurant & Bar is located in a beautifully restored plantation manor on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. Dating back to the 1930's, the estate once served as the plantation manager's home for Hawaii's first sugar plantation, the Koloa plantation. Later, the estate was acquired by the Moir Family who built the world famous gardens that surround the restaurant. Our menu reflects the heritage of old plantation Hawaii, which celebrates the abundance and beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. Our fresh fish is caught daily by local fishermen in waters off Kauai. We use organically grown vegetables and herbs picked fresh on nearby farms and from our own gardens. Guests may choose to dine on our lanai overlooking tranquil gardens, lily ponds and tropical foliage or in our exquisitely refurbished dining room which features gorgeous Brazilian cherry wood floors, woven bamboo tables and plantation ceiling fans.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We arrived on early side of dinner time so that is why noise level was quiet, it may be moderate later since the tables were filling up as we ate. Our server was great (attentive, warm, helpful and anticipate our needs) and the rest of staff was attentive and accommodating as well. They had no tartar sauce for my son who eats it with everything, so they made something special for him that was using what they had and it met his needs. We were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and my birthday--since we got married on the property, we thought it would be fun to take our sons to the spot we got married at and then have a bite to eat there. Glad we did."

  • "We enjoyed the setting with all the different plants. As is usual, the restaurant is open air allowing the fragrances of the garden to be part of the dining atmosphere. It was a delightful time."

  • "Ate dinner here while visiting Kauai- everything was great- the food and service were excellent, and the outdoor setting was beautiful- prices were a bit steep, but not out of line with what other restaurants charge. Would definitely go back here if we were in Kauai."

  • "Beautiful garden seeting, excellent service and great food. Even my six year old granddaughter approved...and she has excellent taste."

  • "My wife, our younger son, his girlfriend and I had dinner on Friday, June 13th. That was our first time to the restaurant. Our waiter, Jake, was excellent. He was attentive, answered questions we had about the menu, helped us make our food and drink selections and was, overall, great in every way. The food and drinks were as outstanding as the service. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone on the island looking for a great dining experience."

  • "We dined in the main lanai area. It is a bit noisier than the bar lanai, but has a pleasant garden view and on a typical spring evening was an exceptional setting. Our server Jake was very good, and previous server Monica stopped by the table to say hello. I think the ambiance is the strength with interesting food apparently based on old plantation recipes. Different than the other big name places in both style and ambiance, we have made this a don't miss stop for the past 12 visits to Kauai."

  • "This place was excellent on every level. Located in an old Hawaii former plantation house, the decor is authentic and relaxing. Wait staff are efficient, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The drinks were excellent and served in Ball jars - try the cucumber mojito. Ahi poke and the Rangoon crab appetizers were delicious and good sized. Entrees are a mix of local seafood and grass fed beef. I had the pot roast which was the most tender and flavorful that I've ever had. The seafood curry special was incredible as were the BBQ baby back ribs. We cannot wait to go back. "

  • "We've dined here on every trip to Kauai for over 12 years. We were seated in the bar lanai which is smaller and except for the occasional buzz of the blender in the nearby bar, it is more quiet. Our server Brad and the runners were certainly attentive w/o being intrusive. Their take on the ahi poke stack was well seasoned (did not add soy sauce) and the addition of a side of brown rice made it a meal. Wife had a beautifully prepared Monchong. The baked Hawaiian was refreshingly sweet and the ice cream used was not too fatty.... very nice medium light dessert. Foo-foo island drinks were fun, refreshing and well presented. We'd dine on the bar lanai again."

  • "Exceptional food every time we find there. Friendly and casual atmosphere combined with creative dishes you could eat every day! Our whole family of 6 from 1 to 54 has this place as top on our Kauai restaurant list."

  • "We really enjoy dining here because the setting is so beautiful, and it reminds us of old Hawaii. Also, the staff is very warm and friendly. "

  • "We had dinner after a drink in the bar. Food was exceptional and so was the service. It is pricey, but not at the top. And everything in that part of Kauai is expensive. I would definitely return for another dinner."

  • "Dining is on the open air porch of an actual 1930's plantation house, expanded over the years to make a beautiful spot, surrounded by gardens. very nice! We tried the lau- lau, and it was amazing. Full of seafood and very tasty. Also had the chef's trio, which is a portion of lau lau, pot roast and grilled catch of the day. Very tasty. Service was perfect, and our waiter was very friendly and engaging. Wonderful evening. "

  • "We had a table out on the lanai overlooking the garden with the ponds and beautiful flowers & plants. We were at the corner, very private which was perfect as we were celebrating our 35 th anniversary. The food was outstanding! The selection was great, so many unique offerings. We would definitely recommend this restaurant!! "

  • "Wow. Don't miss this place. SO beautiful. Not with an ocean view but incredible Hawaiian gardens. We sat on the veranda looking right out on the gardens. Majestic. Food was also excellent. Started with Ahi Poke. Delicious and beautiful tower presentation. Then grilled Mongolia Khong. Again excellent. Served on delicious baby bok Choy. And we had to try the garlic Parmesan fries. We skipped dessert because we were full but we hated to because there was an excellent choice. This place could be a 5 star in any major city. Enjoy!"

  • "Followed a recommendation from a friend who used to live on the islands. No disappointment! Outside views of the orchid garden were beautiful. Seafood and pot roast dishes were delicious. Will return."

  • "Although beautiful gardens surrounding the restaurant we were a bit disappointed this year. We've eaten here before but not sure we'd go back. The menu is very limited so I'd check it out on line before going again. My husband and I both got a seafood dish and found the sauce to be overpowering and monotonous as you kept eating. Service was good, friendly and efficient. Like I said, not sure we'd go back."

  • "We look forward each year to having dinner at the Plantation Garden during our visit to Kauai. It is our favorite restaurant experience and a must! "

  • "I live on Kauai. When we arrived we were seated "outside" on the rear lanai facing the Outrigger desk, a real estate office and a parking lot. This "section" should not be considered part of the main restaurant. The views are far inferior from the main restaurant which has nicer tables, nicer flooring and a classier atmosphere. I thought the area we were seated in was for bar patrons who wanted to take their drinks outside. I was with a relative visiting from the mainland so I decided to make the best of it so as not to ruin a nice dinner by complaining. Management needs to remove this area as part of the restaurant or offer a different menu at lower prices. I did not expect to eat at what looked like the wooden lanai of some condo."

  • "Food was excellent and since I'm pregnant unfortunately, i could not have a cocktail. But the hibiscus tea was excellent. "

  • "Great way to end our trip to Kauai. Great atmosphere and very helpful service. The only thing missing was live music!"
    Dined on 4/16/2014
  • "The setting is gorgeous in the garden. The food was good but not worth what we paid. The curry is not homemade, some of the items were bland (fritters), and I did not feel like I was getting fine dining with the prices we paid. The bar mixes great drinks, however. The place would benefit from a more experienced chef."

  • "Pretty restaurant but the food just wasn't good...Sorry I'm a foodie"

  • "We found this place and loved the food so much we went back the next night. Excellent salads with local ingredients. Menu included a nice variety and everything was prepared well. Sauces are always a give away and their were so flavorful you enjoyed every bit. Wine list was short, but included enough variety. Also was nice in that it did not only include the high ends....or worse, be priced at four times what they should be. The garden setting is very nice and the inside looked nice as well. They prided themselves on cocktails.....all which looked great. Bottom line, the food quality, preparation, service and ambiance were great."

  • "The host/hostess greeted with friendly smiles. The waitstaff young and very friendly. The food good, light on spices, but a nice menu with some unique and some popular choices. If you enjoy finding notable wines and pairing specifically with foods you'll find their list a little short. Our visit was the first night of a week long stay. It is a very pleasant experience and we're glad we went. While there are plenty of signs for the restaurant you'll probably mumble a couple times 'is this the right way in?'. This restaurant gives the feeling of really wanting to be a fine dining experience but not having quite enough experience or leadership to get there. A very good place to eat at Poipu!"

  • "Plantation Gardens is always a pleasure. The menu has interesting and inventive dishes and everything is perfectly prepared. We had an excellent opah crusted with coconut, and a new salad on the menu is fabulous."

  • "Service was really slow and neither of us liked our food"

  • "Having attended the Prince Kuhio Festival Dinner at the Plantation Garden before, we went with high expectations for a special meal and a special evening. We were disappointed. We chose the pre-fixe, special menu. After enjoying cocktails (not part of the dinner), we had a pleasant, if unspectacular, salad. Then came a steamed, whole mullet (fish) served on vegetables with a side of (tasteless) breadfruit. The mullet was an oily, bony fish that I gave up on after a few bites. I decided to go vegetarian but even they were not satisfying. The desert, a coconut pie/tart was a sugary mix served in an I edible crust. The ladies ate more of their mullet but agreed that it was a poor menu choice that they would not order again."

  • "We had a special night out with our children and grandchild. Despite this being a nice and fancy restaurant in a beautiful garden setting, we were surprised that our 2 year old was welcomed with a kid's menu and high chair. The food was excellent. The bread service was small portion and way overpriced, but didn't really diminish our experience. All the servers were friendly and not fussy."

  • "It was our first dinner in Kauai and a delicious one. The seafood curry was spicy and warmed is up on a windy chilly night."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "Our service at Plantation Gardens was excellent. The food was average, good tasty but not fine dining if that's what you are expecting. Though my husband had the same local fish at Postcards in Hanalei and he said this was better!"

  • "This is a lovely restaurant in an old plantation manager's home with wonderful historic pictures on the walls. The restaurant is open to the surrounding gardens which are are lush and beautiful. Our party of six particularly enjoyed the waiter's recommendation of the blackened fish specials for the evening."

  • "We have always enjoyed dining at Plantation Gardens, but I have to say it keeps getting better. The chef has improved some of the old favorites (like the pork tenderloin skewered on sugar cane) and added one wonderful salad. We will be back next week."
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "We were disappointed. None of our dishes ,from the curry to the fish, were seasoned well and none were the least bit special. I think everyone there, from the kitchen to the wait staff, just seems to go through the motions. The wine by the glass menu was very limited and not very good ,and they certainly need to get a better chocolate chip cookie recipe. I think this restaurant needs some new life and enthusiasm!"

  • "Plantation Gardens is perfect for a romantic dinner. The setting (in a garden) is beautiful and the old plantation represents the islands of old. Well worth a night during your visit to Hawaii"

  • "This restaurant was in the condo complex we stayed at and we didn't try it until the last night and we wished we had tried it sooner. It is an old plantation house and it is very open with open sides and some seats on the lanai. The meal was good and the service was great."
