Diner Reviews
  • "I came to Plaj with a visitor from out of town on a Saturday night. We knew we wanted Hayes Valley, and when faced with a sea of southern/soul food and 'American' options, Plaj clearly stood out as something different. Great cocktails to kick things off (mine featured gin, rhubarb simple syrup and more). The menu is an interesting combo of comfort foods (I enjoyed the potato dumplings in brown butter, reminded me of Polish food but more refined), never-had-before delicacies (my first ever fish tongue) and elegantly prepared classics with a twist (beet salad with an unexpected hint of truffle). Ambience was good, although I didn't know until I arrived that Plaj is actually situated within a boutique hotel. Nice bar, good lighting."

  • "Interesting Scandinavian menu with original combinations of known and lesser known ingredients (fish tongues!) served in small portions which allow a sampling across the lists. Limited (selection) wine list; wines by the glass at top shelf prices. Friendly service"

  • "We came here based on a recommendation from a friend. We didn't know what to expect because none of us had ever had Scandinavian food before. It was very good. We relied on the server for recommendations and she steered us to delicious choices - good mix of veggies, seafood & meat. My favorite dish was the pork belly. Highly recommend Plaj. We can't wait to come here again. "

  • "Wasn't sure about the menu when I saw it, but we had a lovely dinner choosing from the 4 columns and excellent service. Definitely recommend and plan to return."

  • "Plaj is our new favorite before the opera, symphony or ballet. The food is unique, prices are reasonable and the ambiance is wonderful. 4+ stars"

  • "The food was great for small plates to be able to try everything Don't be scared be something you have never heard of It's all amazing"

  • "A Scandinavian truck stop that is. I'm from Norway and this smells just like an old school roadside diner there. I'm not sure what that means. The food is over priced for what it is. It's good, but it's sort of pretentious in tiny portions, without the subtlety of flavor to pull off the presentation. The cloudberry jam says it all. Cloudberries are amazing, and I'm sure they source some real berries (my mom could bring some over), instead they sell you a $20 thing of sweet jam that is 10% of that price at IKEA. Dissapointing. Most of the waitresses were also Asian. I have nothing against Asians, but it didn't make me think "Scandinavia" exactly."

  • "Great off the beaten track menu (Swedish). Good variety with something for all. Very convenient for City Center and live large scale entertainment venues..."

  • "The noise level for our group of five to have a conversation was a little hard - the seating seems to lend itself better to groups of two or four. The food was very good, the service was attentive, the food did seem a little slow in arriving but it was the busy time on a Saturday night. We appreciated the small plates and sharing. The only suggestion is to add a few more wines below $50, limited choices."

  • "A group of us met our friends who were staying at the hotel over night. We hadn't seen each other in a long time. Lots of conversation, food was interesting and delicious, and we did not feel rushed to finish our meal even though the restaurant was busy. Our service was just right -- unobtrusive, but everything worked perfectly."

  • "I was initially very excited to visit Plaj. Our waitress was friendly. The food was flavorful. The standouts were the potato dumplings and the ox cheek. We also enjoyed their bread but this is were we found a major lapse in judgement. We were given an initial offering of bread, halfway thru our meal we requested more. The busboy "checked" and then returned to tell us that they had run all out of bread. We were surprised. 10 minutes later our waitress showed up and we shared what had transpired only to be told an extra order of bread will be $3. Really Plaj!! We are spending hundreds of dollars and you are going deny us more bread because it is $3 more! I do not appreciate being lied to and I just found the exchange tacky and cheap!!!"

  • "This was our 5th visit to Plaj over the last few years and while the food was great (as always), the service seems to have slipped. Maybe it was an off-night on a Sunday (chef's night off?) but it took 3 hours to have dinner. The pacing was much too long. And our server didn't really seem interested in answering questions and providing full information about menu items. While small things, the staff couldn't keep water glasses filled and the bread was stale. Really disappointing given our past experiences there."

  • "So much hype, so let down. The waitress was kind but got the order wrong. The marrow bones were not marrow bones and for 20 dollars, ended up with less than a teaspoon of marrow in a long shank type bone. There were no juniper berries nor any hint of juniper berry flavor in the sauce on the elk, which by itself was done perfectly. It tasted like a basic brown sauce. I have a juniper tree and collect the berries every spring for their pungent aroma. The glass of wine had to be at least a day or two old and was had turned to nearly vinegar. One and done for us which is very, very rare for any restaurant we go to in the City, where great restaurants are as common as about anywhere in the world. The limpa rye was excellent but that's it."

  • "Having dined at fine restaurants in Stockholm, I must say I felt right at home here. And of course, we over-ate. My friend and I each had to try one from each of the four columns. We shared the chocolate cake for dessert and had no room for the Princess cake that we ordered, so I took that home. The composition of the Princess cake was unique...I've never had cake in a mason jar until now. I would definitely dine here again, and highly recommend it to all."

  • "How many restaurants offer great food and a quiet place to dine? Plaj does and we appreciate sharing conversation with friends while dining on well-executed food. We ordered lots of plates and shared it among the four of us...salmon in cream sauce, Swedish meatballs, herring, cow cheeks, and a salad. Then we shared four different desserts, Swedish pancakes, waffle, and two others...Everything was excellent."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the food and service were at this restaurant. We hadn't hear of the restaurant and it's inside a hotel on Fulton near Franklin, so we weren't sure if how good the food would be, but it was fabulous. Great selection on the menu with a wide range of seafood and meats, plus cheese plates, salads and specials. There is a full bar, which is quite beautiful, and great selection of specialty drinks. Great experience all around."

  • "The menu is too-cleverly organized into four sections that intend to clarify this unique menu but make it much more confusing. Some items in each section are appetizers, others are entrees, but the server has to tell you which is which. My husband and I ordered two appetizers and had so much food that we didn't order anything else but went straight to dessert. This seemed to annoy the server who had already been very busy and not particularly attentive to us.Having said that, the food we ordered was all outstanding. There are also a lot of raw fish items, which limit the choices for those like myself who do not like raw fish. PLÄJ seems to work well for groups of four or more people who can order lots of different things and sample each one."

  • "Plaj has a cool intimate atmosphere, but our rude waiter left us cold and uncomfortable. The food was chewy, bland and inedible. No reason to ever go back here."

  • "First time visitors - came before a 7PM show. We were seated promptly and everyone was great about checking in on our timeline and expediting service -- my only regret is that we would have loved to linger over each dish because they were all terrific -- especially the elk terrine and the cream of fennel soup with egg yolk and lump caviar...pork belly also really good. Great cocktails as well...we plan to head back with friends and without plans later in the evening so we can hang out all night and eat the whole menu..."

  • "in the city does not disappoint. Krondill poached Lobster is a MUST, Princess Cake looks delish for people who likes 'em. UBER close to Opera Plaza (walking distance). Not a cheap treat."

  • "This is a beautiful place with excellent service - and quiet! But the food, though good, is far too expensive - especially for such minuscule portions. Skip the swedish meatballs. You can get better at Ikea for 75% less."

  • "It was our first dinner here, and we loved it very much! We shared beet salad. Entries: Farmers Sausage is a substantial dish of venison links and greens; fish of the day was A. halibut, small portion but tasty. Choc Torte for desert turned out a good size warm and crispy sort of brownie. Wine list is big enough for me. Bread is especially delicious! Service is warm and friendly without overpowering. Dining room decor is great to my taste, i felt very comfortable there! Want to come back as soon as possible."

  • "came across Plaj while searching for dinner for 4 and were satisfied entirely. Food was outstanding, service excellent. A nearby table had a shrieking infant for the first half, why the adults would be so inconsiderate, what if an adult were shrieking out of control, I suspect they would be asked to leave."

  • "Lovely food but service suffers when the place is crowed, many in a rush to get to a performance. The room is cozy and well arranged. Interesting and unusual combination of flavors, apparently reflecting the tastes of Scandinavia."

  • "Good restaurant, service was a little scarce. Everyone was very friendly but seemed like a long time between seating and finding someone to take our drink order, then another lapse between that and trying to place our dinner order. We were going to order a bottle of wine but by the time our server came back we were already on our second course so just had a glass. A couple of items we ordered never came to the table but we had ordered several items so we did not leave hungry. Overall a good experience, just a few hiccups."

  • "The only objection is that in the small back room a table for 12-14 is always set up for large groups and when it is full, the noise is unbearable."

  • "I have been to Plaj several times and I have been very impressed with the quality of the food and the attentiveness of each of the staff. The staff is always friendly, informative, courtious and just such a pleasure to be around. I have taken several friends there and each and every one of them have fallen in love with Plaj."

  • "This restaurant is a hidden gem in the Hayes Valley area. It's the perfect place to go before a show - opera, ballet, symphony. Everything on the menu is delicious and new, fresh and different from the usual stuff you get at other new restaurants. The cocktail list is also very inventive. They use fresh, seasonal and local ingredients so even simple dishes like roasted vegetables just burst with freshness and flavor. You can't go wrong with ordering the burrata with the aquavit vinaigrette, any of the fish dishes (like the herring), the venison and the swedish meatballs. The staff is also very friendly and nice."

  • "appetizer portions were tiny- herring invisible on the herring plate mussels should have been served in a bowl, not a plate. - souold not scoop up the juices had to ask for a plate for the shells host dressed as if he were at some bar instead of in nice dining room- too casual"

  • "good place before the Ballet or Opera and Symphony"

  • "Took a young couple to dinner here because we love Plaj so much. There was one dish that was disappointing, the lamb neck cassoulet, the but the rest were excellent (potato dumplings, venison, Swedish meatballs, caraway smoked salmon, pork belly (our favorite),"
    Dined on 2/25/2014
  • "Small plates to share, make it interesting to taste foods with which we are not familiar. All their dishes are well made and delicately flavored. The gravlax salmon was tender and seasoned perfectly. Second time we were here. It is a short distance to SF Jazz, as well as to ballet, opera and symphony. The server asks whether there are places one needs to be, so that the food can be timed well for a relaxed meal. As we headed to the garage after SFJazz, others were walking for a late dinner at Plaj."

  • "The aquavit was delicate and divine, and the stout moistened the taste buds for the fjord and hagen: caraway-smoked salmon, burrata with persimmons and rye crumbs, potato dumplings with lingonberry and brown butter, and kladkakka for dessert. Definitely will be coming back."

  • "First time trying the restaurant. The food was great, ambiance was great, service was excellent. We sat and chat until 11:30 PM, the waitresses was courteous enough to give us privacy. This was really appreciated especially the previous night I was just at another restaurant where the servers tried to rush us through our meals to get us out sooner."

  • "PLAJ still has a problem with terrrible service. Even though I was on time for my reservation for 2, the host couldn't seat me for 15 minutes. I had to wait in the corridor. Yet, 2 parties of walk-ins that came in after me (both parties of 2) were seated while I waited. The restaurant was empty at the time. At the end of our meal, we waited 30 minutes for a drink and 45 minutes for the check. They also got the calculations for the check completely wrong. We had a performance, and almost missed the curtain despite allotting 2-1/2 hours. Our server was pleasant, but slow. This wasn't the first time that service was messed up. Good thing I like the food. The service glitches ruined my experience. Again."

  • "Service started off slowly, about 15 minutes after seating before any server. Once server came and began service it was professional and attentive. Food came out at good pace with no overlap of courses on table"
