Diner Reviews
  • "Piedmont used to be more posturing than substance. Now that Ben Adams is head chef, the restaurant has gone from glitz to a true gem. I was blown away by the creative yet un-fussy take on local summer ingredients (beet-infused watermelon salad with chèvre, basil pistou, and blueberries; chilled shrimp and corn soup) last night. And the desserts are to die for--not too heavy, but so decadent. The blackberry and chocolate sorbets competed for my affection."

  • "This was our first visit to The Piedmont Restaurant and it was certainly worthy to add to our must return list. Portions were just right...not too little, not too much. The menu was eclectic but there were plenty of items we would have liked to tried. We were full by sharing an appetizer and then having an entree' each. Therefore we cannot comment on Piedmont's dessert menu. Service was attentive and friendly. Noise level was not a problem; but on weekend evenings when the restaurant is usually filled, I could imagine that it would be a bit on the noisy side given its high ceilings and decor that would not absorb noise well."

  • "In almost every way, but victim of their own success with both fish options running out before we arrived at 8 PM."

  • "I hadn't been to Piedmont in over a year. Totally different scene. New chef. Improved decor. Eclectic customers. The watermelon salad was outstanding. The risotto was creamy, full of flavor, and had a subtle mint finish. The duck confit was perfect. Our server was attentive and professional. An outstanding dining experience. Will be back often."

  • "Food is good but service Saturday was pretty abysmal. Six of us were there early and the restaurant was full. We ordered second drinks before our main courses came which never appeared. We finally canceled them after we finished our main courses. We made the mistake of ordering dessert which took forever. Finally, the waitress told one of our party (not the whole table) that the kitchen was backed up and dessert would be out soon. Ten minutes later it finally arrived and our guests had to hurry through it since they had to pick up their kids. Never received an apology or anything from the manager or waitress. We figured a 6:30 reservation should have been plenty of time to leave by 8:45 and they barely made it."

  • "server was good but it took a tad longer to be greeted and to get drink orders than ideal. food was outstanding. would definitely return."

  • "I heard there was new kitchen staff at Piedmont so thought I'd give it another try despite two negative experiences under prior regimes. The menu is more diverse and interesting than in the past and the wine list is much better than I remembered. Unfortunately, the conceptualization and execution left a lot to be desired. The chilled corn soup was pretty good but the presentation and negotiation of the dish was compromised by a massive amount of corn kernels piled in the side of the bowl, topped with shrimp and cucumber salsa. Way too much going on -- a distraction from the primary element. Similarly, the preserved watermelon was good, but the accompanying pickled blueberries and puréed kimchee detracted rather than enhanced. Simplify."

  • "We most recently went to Piedmont before a show at the Carolina Theatre, as is very often the case. As is also always the case, the food was very good. Local ingredients well and thoughtfully prepared. Unlike our past visits, however, the service was somewhat disorganized this time. The appetizer came out before our wine and then a look wait for our main course. Not sure if they're breaking in new staff, but it needs some tuning up. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our meal and will be back."

  • "We chose the restaurant because of its proximity to our hotel, and we were pleasantly surprised with the overall menu and service. Our waiter was new, but fairly knowledgeable. He was attentive but not overbearing. We had the Mahi-Mahi and Duck Breast entrees and both were wonderful. Our appetizer, smoked trout spread was delicious. The only negative, was the wine pours. They were definitely on the small side :-( We would definitely dine here again, when in Durham."

  • "This is a wonderful place for groups (ours was seven people). We had no issues with separate checks and the bartender (David) gladly allowed us to move to our table with drinks and combine it all without a glitch. Most definitely will be back here. The service was excellent just like the food. The only thing needed was a bit more choices on the menu but everyone in our group was happy with their food and there were no complaints!"

  • "Fresh, beautifully prepared food, small menu but all offerings very tempting. Excellent service and ambiance. Loved starter, main, dessert and wine. This was my third visit and experience was consistent with previous visits. Highly recommend Piedmont as a destination restaurant."

  • "Piedmont is one of our go-to places. We know that we will consistently enjoy flavorful and creative dishes that taste fresh and seasonal. I had my heart set on the cold beet salad, but it wasn't on the menu this time. (Bring it back!) The cheese plate was good but I felt was overpriced for the three small cheese slivers that we received. The fried oysters with duck pate were outstanding, as was the risotto. My mahi mahi was OK, nothing wrong with the dish, it just didn't stand out. The desserts are suberb, pick any of them and you'll be pleased. As always, the service is exceptional."

  • "As a chef my wife has become a picky eater. The locally sourced ingredients drew me in and the flavor is what will bring me back. The service was outstanding and I can't wait to return."

  • "We were looking for a new farm-to-table restaurant for a special occasion, and were THRILLED to find Piedmont! Driving up to the building, you wouldn't have a clue as to what awaits you inside. But what a gem... The appetizers were TO DIE FOR (trout dip, watermelon/blueberry salad) - actually my favorite part of our dining experience. The mahi mahi (with delectable carrots and potato puree) was stellar, and my date's coulotte with roasted brocccoli and sweet potatoes were melt-in-your-mouth. And the presentation was perfection. If there was anything disappointing, it was the fact that there wasn't a chocolate option for dessert...! (But the coconut cake and blueberry/peach "Ten Dollar Pie" were fabulous!) We will return!"

  • "You must go, and order the chilled corn soup with shrimp. And the smoked fish spread. And the creamy and complex risotto. And the duck. And the peach blueberry pie with lemon buttermilk ice cream!! Everything is dreamy, beautifully presented, packed with flavorful hints and new tastes from local food sources. The cheese appetizer and dessert portions are a bit sparse, but nonetheless tasty. Wine selections and craft beers are inspired. We'll be back- and soon!"

  • "The food at Piedmont is consistently excellent but we wish the ownership could soften the atmosphere a bit--the chairs aren't the most comfortable and the overhead lights swinging in the breeze from the heating or air-conditioning can be distracting. Is there a way to "cozy up" the place? We really do love the food--creative, delicious, and varied--but aren't as keen on the atmosphere."

  • "Nice decor, we sat upstairs. Much quieter than downstairs. Beer list is ok at best. We ordered fried oysters to start, they were nice. Good flavor. We then ordered the coulette, and the duck leg. The duck was perfect, gnocchi could have used a little more seasoning. We asked for the coulette med-rare. It came out closer to medium almost medium well on the ends. The vegetables and broccoli were excellent, best thing on the plate. Our server was quiet, didn't ask us if we wanted another round of drinks. He seemed busy with several tables that had been sat and the 10 top he had as well. We will be back, it was an overall good experience."

  • "Everything we had was terrific: beet salad, fried oysters, coullote, risotto, berry pie and sticky date cake. YUM! Service was very attentive and timing was very good. This one deserves an all-around top-notch rating!"

  • "This was my second time going to Piedmont. I think their inventive menu and great service make it one of the best restaurants in Durham. We'd love to go back again."

  • "We had a really lovely evening and enjoyed the dinner. The interior design is so pleasing; the food was fresh and delicious. Our waitperson attended to our every need but was never obtrusive. He really knew when to show up and when to let us be."

  • "Our party of 4 all enjoyed our meal last Sunday evening. We partook of the TRW 3 course meals and each one of us was thrilled. The trout pate' was perfect - not too heavy and just the right crunch on the crackers. My duck confit was amazing and the gnocchi was just the right accompaniment to soak up that wonderful sauce. The coconut cake with the dark chocolate moose was easily one of the best desserts we had ever tasted! Not too sweet Wish we could join you every night!!"

  • "Out of five restaurants I tried with my wife for Restaurant Week, this was the best. Great ambiance, excellent service, and the food was well presented, unique, and most of all delicious. I didn't know many things on the menu but the wait staff was very knowledgeable about it, including questions about the wood art on the wall and what the name of the restaurant meant, which was interesting to note since we're not from NC. The cocktails we had were all perfectly executed. I highly recommend the 92 square mile and tell them you want it on the sweet side. Will definitely recommend and probably come back for special occasions since it is pricey. That said, it's a great value for the price and you'll try things you want get anywhere else."

  • "Visited the Piedmont during Triangle Restaurant Week spring 2014. Sampled several dishes, cocktails and coffee- all were excellent. Our server was polite and knowledgeable- on point throughout the entire dinner. All within walking distance to the DPAC where we had a concert at 730p...perfect timing with a 530p reservation!"

  • "We have dined here frequently and always find this restaurant to have the freshest food that is always masterfully prepared. This particular visit was especially good, as it was Restaurant Week so we got a 3 course meal for $30.00 each. The wine list is one of the most extensive around and the service, as always, is first rate. So many items are house made and we especially liked the smoked trout spread with house made crackers which was absolutely outstanding. Thanks for another great experience!"

  • "We are fine diners with experience from an internatlonal perspective. We thoroughly enjoyed this occasion at The Piedmont and it was special because it was my pick restaurant from the online reviews for my birthday. I picked a real winner with the food and service being the headliners. It made my special day even more special with such a delight for my palate. I like the quiet of the space and ambiance was pleasing, too. The waiter and service was superb. Even on a busy evening we were made to feel very special. "

  • "Had not visited Piedmont since change in chef/management but were prompted by N & O review to try again. The dinner was absolutely fantastic. Approach to food is fresh and creative. Flavors were clean and yet complex. We enjoyed a mixed green salad with shaved radishes and snap peas, beet and watermelon salad, risotto, seared mahi mahi, coconut cake and sticky date cake. We enjoyed every bite. Service was also outstanding! We will definitely be back!"

  • "This was our first visit to Piedmont and the food was very good. We had fried oysters for an appetizer and they were tasty. I ordered the risotto and it was delicious (although I did wish I had an option to add shrimps to it). My husband tried the confit duck leg. The duck was a little salty but still pretty good, the sides were decent. The staff was friendly. The only problem I saw was that we were the first guests there but the women's bathroom (specifically one of the toilets) was dirty, which means the staff did not make sure the bathroom was clean before the restaurant opened. • "Went for a special occasion, even called to tell the restaurant it was special. The hostess and everyone were all super but our waitress rolled her eyes when we weren't ready to order and acted as if we were not worth her time. Not helpful at all and literally walked away while my mom was speaking to her. Exceptional food but the service took away from the experience. "

  • "5 of us went out before seeing a show at the Carolina theater. Had an excellent experience. Very nice cocktails and reasonable beer selection. The food was excellent. Our group had the oysters and beet salad appetizers, and the coulotte and risotto dishes. All very well done."

  • "Brunch, dinner, tastings or holiday meals are all exceptional! I have travelled the world and been fortunate to eat in some of the most notable restaurants. I also have worked in high end specialty food service for 15 + years. I encourage everyone to try Piedmont! "

  • "Had dinner with my brother. One of the best restaurants I've been to in years! For apps we had the soft shell crab and the roasted beet salad. Wonderful. Entrees were striped bass and smoked pork chop. My brother raved about the fish! The pork chop was brilliant! I don't know WHAT they do to the grit cake that comes with it but O.M.G....AMAZING!!!!! If I lived in Durham, Piedmont would be at the top of my list. Don't miss this jewel of a restaurant!"

  • "All I can say is WOW. The hostess hospitality was good, the waitress (Mary Beth) was sweet, proactive and suggested the sommelier (Crawford) come help us with the extensive wine list. Crawford was a joy - he listened to our tastes and experience and pointed out 5-6 wines that matched our palate, and he knew the entree menu in detail. He also circled back to check on us after we chose and suggested decanting the wine. The waitstaff did the 'team approach' to service, constantly checking on us, replenishing silverware, water, bread, etc. Had the fried oysters appetizer - delicate, delicious. I had the duck leg confit - crispy skin, succulent, and the gnocchi was delicious. My wife had the ravioli -- one of the best dishes I have ever tasted."
