Diner Reviews
  • "Food was incredible from the rolls through coffee and dessert. We love Piedmont for pre-theater dining since only a couple of blocks from DPAC and also close to Chapel Hill (Playmakers). Service was spectacular as well. One of our favorites. "

  • "Great food, excellent service. The manager helped us with our wine choice and came back to check on us. Very nice!"

  • "Heard about Piedmont from a friend who recommended it very highly. I was looking for a unique and local dining experience and man did it deliver! The Duck Breast was perfectly prepared. Exceptional! I look forward to going back again."

  • "I was a big fan of Piedmont when it first opened, but after their initial novelty, things had stagnated, especially the menu. I heard the restaurant had a new chef and management, so I gave it another try, and I was very impressed. Food was *great*, with a great selection of unique options I couldn't find at many other Durham restaurants. Our server and the manager were very attentive. If you are in the mood for a cocktail, then entertain the 401... jalapeno-infused vodka that packs a punch!"

  • "What a wonderful experience! Our table of 4 had a wonderful sampling of many of the menu options and found them all to be excellent! The appetizers, the salad, the main courses all top of the line. The grass fed coulotte of beef was incredible. The beet salad which was brought to the table as a gift from the waiter was outstanding. The subtle flavors and exquisite sauces were superb! We will definitely be back."

  • "I was impressed by the food. attentive, knowledgeable waitstaff."

  • "Although the menu itself was not vegan-friendly, the server and chef were incredibly accommodating and created an amazing dish of veggies and grains for me. The ingredients were fresh and the flavors were phenomenal."

  • "Nice attempts but uneven. Sirloin okay. Risotto excellent. Salads were average."

  • "First time dining at Piedmont Restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyable experience. Went for dinner prior to going to DPAC. Reasonable prices and portions."

  • "Consistently excellent food, superb service. Atmosphere is relaxed, but very professional. Easy parking a plus."

  • "The Piedmont has a diverse wine list, however, they are awfully proud of it from the prices charged - $12 for a glass of house wine is outrageous. For the Triangle area, dinner with wine after tip ran $90 per person. A little steep for our taste."

  • "Unique menu with a wide variety of choices that should peak the interests of the most discriminating foodie. Best oysters I've ever eaten! Sea bass was outstanding, service was superb! My only criticism would be the noise level...beyond "energetic"."

  • "Had a recent business dinner for 6. Service was pleasant and efficient; personable but not overbearing. Food was beautifully prepared with clever (but not fussy) accompaniments. Wine list was inventive, although they didn't seem to have more than one bottle of the wines we chose. I'll give them a hall pass on this one and trust it was a fluke. The desserts were the topper! Sticky date cake was gooey and flavorful and the lemon tart with brown butter ice cream was outstanding. I look forward to returning."

  • "Piedmont restaurant is a mainstay in our dining choices. The menu is always great with excellent choices. We take out of town visitors there to show off the great food scene in Durham."

  • "We really enjoyed the dinner at Piedmont. The selections were great and the atmosphere was good for a recent interview candidate dinner. Not too loud to crush conversation but enough energy. The food was really good. All four of us ate something different and they were thoroughly enjoyed."

  • "This is one of our favorite places in Durham. It's always excellent."

  • "I'd come here even if it weren't convenient, but 1 block from Carolina Theatre with ample parking makes it my go to."

  • "creative, stunningly delicious food. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We really enjoyed the food. They have a great wine list and the food came out in a timely manner. The waitress though barely spoke to us the whole night. We thought she was the water girl at first because she didn't speak one word while pouring the water and then later her first words to us were, "Are you ready to order?" The rest of the night she dropped off the plates without ONE word! After dinner she dropped off the dessert menus and then the check. She never said anything the whole time! We had wanted to ask her opinion on a couple of dishes, but we decided that we didn't value her opinion if this was the way she works at this restaurant. We may or may not be back to Piedmont, but if we go we would request a different waitress."

  • "The cuisine and service at Piedmont are superb. It was clear that, being aware that this was our anniversary, the waitperson took extra trouble to look after us. Each course was outstanding. Our only (slight) disappointment was the wine list. We tried a Bordeaux merlot blend and a Sangiovese blend and both were disappointing. Possibly because they were by the glass and the wines were not at their peak. Nevertheless, we had a great experience and would highly recommend Piedmont for a romantic evening (or Sunday brunch, which we had there once before and was splendid!)."

  • "The Chef here is SO creative! Starting with fresh/ local it's hard to go wrong but not always easy to rise to spectacular as he does at Piedmont. The fried oyster appetizer was delicious and perfectly fried. The beet /fennel / goat cheese salad was beautiful, creamy and better than any beet salad anywhere. The striped bass over sweet carrots was a masterpiece. The skin so perfectly done it was the first time in my life I did not remove it. The secret sauce was sweetly spicey and a perfect pairing. I only say secret because I wouldn't begin to guess how to replicate it. A fantastic meal once again!"

  • "I am recently on a dairy and soy free diet due to my breastfed infants allergies- and the waiter and the kitchen were EXTREMELY helpful. They took the time to understand my needs and actually made me a special dish that wasn't on the menu in order to meet my needs. Our server Eric was wonderful."

  • "We returned to Piedmont to celebrate a birthday but, unfortunately, running late from a matinee movie, and encountering traffic, it was clear we would be late for our reservation. I called and they said we would probably have to sit at the bar but, understanding this, I replied that that was fine. Luckily, when we got there we were told they had found us a table and we were able to begin our meal before the onslaught of other diners. We enjoyed the beet salad and fried oysters and our martinis. The main course of pasta and lamb neck was good and filling. For dessert we had something chocolate and delicious. Piedmont is a restaurant we enjoy. The room enveloped with golden light as the day wanes and the good service add to its charm."

  • "We had dinner prior to going to Carolina Theater Saturday night. The food was excellent (I had oyster appetizer, striped bass entree, others in my party had beet appetizer and pork entree). Our server was aware of our need to leave by 7:30 and was very attentive to our request. We dine here about once a month and are always impressed by the quality of the food and service. The location is also convenient to downtown Durham."

  • "My husband and I tried the Piedmont before we went to a concert on a weeknight. We had great service and the food was excellent. Very innovative combination of side veggies with the entrees which made it very interesting. Nice presentation and flavorful. We will certainly try it again."

  • "Went here with son & daughter-in-law from NYC for dinner and they were thrilled! They had heard about Piedmont from NY Times and from a friend, so it was an easy sell to get them there. We had outstanding food, very interesting flavor blends, and excellent service. We'll definitely go back!"

  • "Generally good in terms of food-- especially my friend's meal-- she loved it. Jazz music is great but really loud for talking-- so you have to make a choice- either yell to each other or just not talk and enjoy the music. I was really disappointed with the crab--watery-- was it really lump crab? If not, it should have been-- hollandaise, muffin, greens, coffee-- all good."

  • "Me and my boyfriend decided to try out Piedmont after a recommendation from a friend, and we thoroughly enjoyed every part of our meal. Started with the trout dip and fried oysters, both of which were outstanding, although the trout dip was without a doubt my favorite. For the main course, I ordered the pork chop and my boyfriend ordered the steak. We must have liked our meals as there was nothing left on our plates when we were done. Overall fantastic meal, would definitely go again and recommend to all!"

  • "My husband and I dined here before going to a show at DPAC. The atmosphere was fun and the service was good. The food was really fresh and unique. Definitely a good place for foodies and those looking for local ingredients."

  • "We had chefs 4 course tasting with wine flights. Food was outstanding, but wine experience was beyond amazing. The quality of wines and knowledge of wine service was over the top. Very special evening. Thank You!"

  • "My wife and I met our daughter and her friend here after a conference. It was a time to catch up and we we were surprised to find that we spent almost four hours in Peidmont. At no point did we feel hurried (although the restaurant was full) and the service was just terrific. We shared everything we ordered and I can tell you there was not a hint of anything but delight in all that was brought to our table. Highly recommended."

  • "Went for brunch on a Saturday. Outstanding food. Everything we ordered and tasted was superb. The bacon was ridiculously good. Service was terrific. Dessert was somewhat forgettable but tasty. The star was the brunch itself. Will definitely go back."

  • "Innovative dishes using local foods. Great combinations. Only downside was the noise. It's a warehouse type building which is very attractive but the sound bounces around and makes it pretty difficult to hear. Still, I would definitely go back for the food and friendliness of the staff."

  • "Had a lovely brunch on Saturday with my mom and a friend who came up from Southern Pines. Food was excellent, my mom could not stop raving about her omelette. Cocktails were delicious and potent as a friend commented. The sun was shining through the big windows and there was lively crowd but the noise level was good. My mom's friend said, "Well, when we come back to Durham there's no need to go any place else.""

  • "The Piedmont is back to its original standard. The food was excellent, just the right portions, the service was excellent, and it was nice to see it full and busy again. It's the perfect place to go before a show at the Carolina Theatre. We were really pleased with the experience, which was completely different from a year or so ago. The ambiance is great. I was sad to see they painted over the amazing stencils but all in all, it was a vast improvement from my last visit (about a year ago)."
