  • "My wife and I found Peli Peli by word of mouth and recommended this treasure to many people we know. This weeks visit was one of those times when we brought new people to experience the unique menu items. However, I was embarrassed by the prices that have gotten out of control. I understand that your costs are rising, but there must be a way to put traditional South African dishes on the menu at affordable prices. We stopped going to our other favorite "Perry's Steakhouse" when dinner for 2 came with a $200 tab, without dessert. PP may need to go in this category, which would be a shame. By the way unless $16 for a glass of wine (or1/2 glass as it seems)is obscene unless the bottle came from Christie's Auction House... With respect..."

  • "My friends and family have raved about Peli Peli's food and so my husband and I took the opportunity to visit during Houston Restaurant Week. The entire experience was fantastic. From the moment we entered the restaurant we were greeted and directed to our table. Cali, our server, was so friendly and patient with us as we asked questions about the options offered as well as explaining the décor. Our dining experience began with the scrumptious Peli Peli Bellini. We had the Bobotie as the appetizer, Carrot Ginger soup, hubby had the Espetada and I had the African KingKlip and for dessert he had the Peli Peli cheesecake and I had the bread pudding with toffee sauce. Everything was amazing! We are definitely going back very soon."

  • "The food was fantastic, the service was fantastic! But the noise level, thanks to 10 women, was terrible! We were in the Noah's Ark room at the front of the restaurant. It is enclosed, with seating for about 30. 10 of the 30 were incredibly loud, yelling from one end of a long table to the other end. My husband sat facing the women and I asked if they were drinking a lot. He said no, no wine glasses or martini glasses were on the table, so they were just plain loud and rude! We have eaten at Peli Peli many times and this is the first time we have had any problems with noise."

  • "We have eaten at this restaurant before but always in nice weather and we were able to eat outside. The interior of the restaurant was very charming but the noise level was thru the roof! I know that most restaurants are noisy today but this was beyond the norm. We had a hard time visiting with our friend as a result. I don't think I will go back until we can eat outside."

I asked him for suggestions for other restaurants to try for HRW and he made great recommendations. The decor and ambiance was very romantic! Our food was delicious and I really enjoyed the entire experience :)"

From the Host at the door to the knowledgable wait staff everyone was so nice and all of them enjoyed sharing stories about the restaurant and the owner/chef. We let our waiter suggest which appetizer we should have ~ it was great and so full of flavor! With that success we went with his suggestions for the remainder of the meal ~ we were not disappointed. We can't wait to go back and try the chef's four course tasting menu!"

It is slightly pricey but the cuts of meat are phenomenal so this is to be expected. At this time, it remains the number one special occasion restaurant.   • "I love great food, but I'm not always super-adventurous when it comes to exotic cuisine--and I had no idea what to expect for South African food. Turns out that it's a lot like normal food, with a nice hefty dose of Cajun-style pepper spice. The gigantic tiger prawns are amazing and they're a food adventure in themselves! Don't miss them. Steaks were succulent and fabulously tender, sauces were amazing but not overpowering. Everything we had was fantastic--no room for improvement. Our server, Callie, was incredibly knowledgeable and really helped us first-timers make the most of our experience. Most entrees are at least $30 and the cheapest wine was $11 a glass--but well worth it for a memorable evening."

  • "We only visit Peli Peli a couple times a year, but every visit has exceeded expectations. We haven't eaten anything yet that we didn't like. We started with the Bobotie, which I highly recommend. My wife ordered the Madagascar Peppercorn Steak and I had the South African Kingklip. Not knowing anything about the Kingklip, I took a chance on it, with excellent suggestions by our server for side dishes. The Kingklip was well-seasoned, and it's flavor and texture reminded me of crab meat. My wife also enjoyed her steak very much. If you haven't been to Peli Peli, you are doing your palate a disservice."

  • "Restaurant was the busiest that I have ever seen it. We arrived in time for our dinner reservation and were told that there would be a 30 minute wait for a table. We were seated within 5 minutes The service and food were once again first class. The couple that we were with were first timers and they have now added Peli Peli to their list of favorite restaurants We have never had a bad experience at this restaurant and take our visitors here every time they come to stay. They always want to come back"

  • "The food is very good at Peli Peli, but the wait staff is not very knowledgeable in regards to which items on the menu contain gluten. And the waiter mentions the GF menu AFTER all my questions? Then I review the menu and I'm like, "Ohh... that explains the previous visits." Unbeknownst to me, on my previous visits, I had been getting several dishes that DO contain gluten even though the waitstaff said they didn't. I had wondered, after those previous visits, if I had been glutenized. This most recent visit, I ordered strictly off the GF menu, and I had a much better "after" experience. It's frustrating when restaurants don't train their staff adequately in regards to food intolerances, especially a nice establishment."

  • "Had a recent Monday night girl's nite out and they hit a home run this time. After a 4 star meal with my husband the previous week due to all the food coming out at once, a mere mention to Monday's server, Kristin, saw a well- paced thoughtful service with great food and fabulous wine! Half- price Monday night bottles was a bonus we so appreciated, and we had a great time! Carrot- ginger soup is a sure favorite, followed by African Beef Rolls and bacon- wrapped chicken with guava sauce were a hit! Making our reservation on Open Table was easy and efficient and I recommend it strongly! If you don't mind the humidity, sit outside on the patio overlooking the fountain and enjoy! We will definitely return!"

  • "Tried their lunch menu this time and it is just as spectacular as the dinner menu. The service is always great at Peli Peli and the food is fantastic. My co-workers both admitted they don't like cooked carrots but, with my encouragement, they tried the carrot bredie as a side order and absolutely loved it. It was a first time visit for both of them and they both plan to return because the food was so delicious. It is on the pricey side but you get great food for the money."

  • "The ambiance was great for our anniversary dinner - romantic, yet still vibrant and unpretentious. Our server Kevin and manager Stacey were both phenomenal in making it a special night for us! Thank you, Kevin & Stacey!! Our favorite dish was the prawncake appetizer - so flavorful! The Boerewors Sausage appetizer was incredible too - the best sausage I've ever had! The Espetada was pretty good, but we were unimpressed with the sides that came with it. The Capetown Skillet was great - I loved the spicy sauce mixed with the African rice pilaf. So tasty! The dessert special was sticky toffee cheesecake - so delicious, but extremely rich & heavy. I love the originality of the cocktails; especially enjoyed the Johannesburg Ginger!"

  • "Where else are you going to find Authentic South African food...anywhere besides South Africa that is? The answer: Peli Peli! We were celebrating my wife and neighbor's birthday with a nice romantic couples dinner away from the kids and Peli Peli delivered. The waitstaff did a fantastic job especially when you consider we are so far away from the city. Incredible descriptions of menu items along with fantastic recommendations were all displayed by our waiter. The manager made a brief visit and took a picture of the ladies celebrating then dropped off a nice print to take home. As for the food it did not disappoint especially considering my wife is not the adventurous type."
