A word from Parkside
Parkside, a gastro pub in Austin’s lively downtown area is home to chef/owner Shawn Cirkiel. Located directly on Sixth Street it offers a casual venue for his unpretentious, but bold take on New American Cuisine. Offerings include a sumptuous raw bar—which often carries as many as 16 varieties of oysters. While the menu changes seasonally—even daily--diners can enjoy both dramatic dishes like seared scallops with butternut puree, jalapeno, and lime or comfort basics such as a cheeseburger or fried egg sandwich. • "The food here was outstanding. Great oyster po boy, fries, and macaroni and cheese. The Cobb salad was on the small size- but really good. The dessert was delicious! The only disappointing item was the burger that we ordered med. rare. It came back well done."

  • "I think of a typical 6th street meal as the type of food you eat at a bar and grill--often times mediocre at best and rarely worth recommending. Parkside took the four of us by surprise. The food was outstanding, and I would recommend it to anyone. From the oyster and sashimi platter we shared to the pork belly and tenderloin entree, the presentation and taste were exceptional. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgable, and service proceeded at an appropriate pace. I will say the noise level made normal conversation difficult, but we figured that would be the case given the location. The only complaint our party had was a single drink that took a while to arrive--no big deal. We'll return."

  • "I've been eating at Parkside for years and have always loved this place. My date had never been and she enjoyed the food immensely, especially the half priced Chef's Oyster Platter. Yum! The steak tartare is always a favorite, the ceviche is amazing and the bread and butter aren't to be missed. The restaurant is loud, know that going in, but I have zero complaints and look forward to my next visit!"

  • "Ive been here twice. Once for a full dinner at a table and once at the bar for drinks and oysters. Both times the food was great but the servers either had attitude or werent attentive. It makes it really hard to want to go back."

  • "Another wonderful experience at parkside - we keep thinking the kitchen can't get any better, but it does. Our oyster platter was delish, the entrees - my salmon and my partner's pork duo - were perfectly prepared. Wine, great, priced right. Presentation outstanding. Justin did a superb job of taking care of us - all the little touches were right. My only ongoing complaint is the noise level... we dined early, but it was already difficult to carry on a quiet conversation. Still - kudos to Shawn and the staff!!"

  • "We made reservations at Parkside because we read some really stellar reviews. Upon arrival we were quite pleased with the atmosphere. The hostess was very pleasant and we were promptly seated. This, unfortunately was the turning point. Our server wasn't smiling or welcoming. She didn't make eye contact or engage us at all. We ordered, she brought the food and drinks...that's it! She never checked on us and didn't seem to care if we were happy or not. We're pretty easy going people. I certainly do not require a ton of attention and interaction to have a great meal. However, making us feel like we were not welcome was a bit more than I could stand. The food was fine but the poor service was what really left a bad taste in my mouth."

  • "Food is great but the noise level is nearly unbearable. You can hardly hear yourself think, let alone hear the person across the table from you."

  • "Great choice for a mommys nite out! Scallops were to die for. Sangria was refreshingly intoxicating. Waitstaff were friendly and accommodating."

  • "We had family in town and took a big group to parkside. Everyone walked away commenting on how great the food was and how affordable it was. The location is nice and central so that you can easily make a show or hit up some bars anywhere in town afterwards. Dessert was delicious. Service was top notch and the menu was foodie quality but still accessible for the pickier eaters in the group."

  • "I've been tonParkside several times. My want to love it but it's just so hit and miss. The drinks are well mixed, the space looks great, and it's buzzy but.... Wait staff is so Ho-hum. I know they're busy but tipping the bottle of water into my open hand bag and then stuffing a napkin in it to mop the water up.... Really? Waiting 15 minutes between drinks order? Food is very up and down. Oysters are about your best option IMO. Fries were so salty they were inedible. Lamb very tough despite being recommended by waiter. Salmon atrociously overlooked... Burrata starter SO bland. Too bad because it has all the markings of a ace this part of town desperately needs."

  • "I visited Parkside with a friend on Monday evening. We had a 9:15 reservation. The restaurant was lively, but not too busy. We ordered within a few minutes of sitting. Our food did not arrive until about an hour after our reservation time. Food was delicious, but it took too long. I created a veggie plate; kale salad and two side dishes. My friend had the chicken. If you have food restrictions make sure to look at the menu before you visit; limited choices for me. I probably would not recommend it as a "must-go", but a good option nonetheless."

  • "Great food. The ceviches and the vegetable sides especially stand out. But can be a bit loud by Austin standards, i.e. hard to hear your dining companions, if there's a large group in the place."

  • "Asked for medium cooked meat and when arrived was more well done. Food is ok but not really good. Better to go somewhere else."

  • "The food is always top-notch and the last few times I've been, I've gotten absolutely stellar recommendations from the waitstaff, especially on their selection of raw oysters on the half shell."

  • "My aunt and I went to Parkside to celebrate an accomplishment and we loved it! The menu is always changing but no matter what you get, you'll be happy! We started off with the fried calamari, then she got the salmon, I got pan seared rabbit, we split a side of brussel sprouts and then finished the meal with the apple doughnuts. EVERYTHING was superb! We were both raving about our choices!"

  • "I'm extremely happy with my visit here. We came right on time for our reservations and was sat immediately. Karla was extremely helpful in guiding us with all the oyster selections (we ended up getting the platter with two of her recommendations on it), as well as the rest of our meal. She always came to check on us, but was never hovering. She had a great attitude and knew a lot about all of the food. The food was phenomenal. The raw bass was creamy, sweet, salty, spicy, all at once I was so impressed. I ordered the day boat scallops which the unique flavor profiles of everything on the dish was a pleasant surprise. My boyfriend had the strip which was cooked a perfect medium rare. The deserts were fantastic. Will definitely be returning!"

  • "It is so hard to say somthing bad about Parlside, but I will. The problem is that they eventually bring you the check, which means yo can't stay there forever. It is by far my favorite Austin eatery."

  • "Loved the food and a vibrant place. Will come back for more oysters and also loved the crab cakes and scallop curry. Parkside is open and lively, and a great place to start a night out with friends. Recommended!"

  • "Right on 6th. Regular dinning in an I otherwise over crowded ad scene. Want to go to 6th and be out of the din, and have suoer good. This is your place."

  • "I really enjoyed the whole experience, the service was outstanding. The food was good, but portions are small I really wish they would expand there menu a bit. They are only a couple dishes and a bit more good away from Being a great restaurant. Overall I would rate it 9 out if 10 stars."

  • "Was turned onto this restaurant a few years ago. Always make sure I come here for business meals when at SXSW. Have been here at least 8 times and have always been happy. Last night I went there for dinner and for whatever reason the wait for food was unbearably long. It took forever to order wine, get the wine, order food, get the food and overall ordering the food felt like a fast food restaurant. It wasn't that crowded, so I wasn't sure what the issue was. Felt like the chef had changed or something had gone down in Parkside since I was there last year."

  • "During all SXSW madness going on in the street, we had a very nice dinner here. Service was quick but not pushy, when a friend joined later an extra dish was no problem. The food was great, starters as well as mains. Especially the escallops with curry!"

  • "Was extremely disappointed with Parkside. First, the steak was WAY overcooked (ordered mid rare, got mid well). Second and worse off, the waitress knocked the candle over splashing hot wax on my wife's clothes and arm, and one of our friends clothes as well. We only get a baby sitter once a month or so, and this was supposed to be the highlight of our week (ummmm, no). The manager came by, apologized, gave us her card, offered to take care of the dry cleaning, then promptly walked away. It was almost comical at how disingenuous her apology seemed. Their were a couple other small things (not filling up waters, not keeping the alcohol drinks flowing, average apps), but we were pretty over this place after 30 minutes...."

  • "I no longer live in Austin, but try to stop here when I visit on business. Clients loved it as it's lively scene without being crazy. The bass on the raw is a can't miss, I get it every time and it's perfect. I have had the chicken, rabbit, and lamb there. Each dish has a unique spin and all are well beyond satisfactory. Oyster sampler is also a great starter..."

  • "Erik was outstanding. The pate blew our minds. Bass was incredible, bread-though not necessary was sweet & delicious. Salmon was really interesting w/ the bbq sauce (which I'm not usually a fan of) but I loved it! Everyone was beyond thrilled with the menu. GREAT scotch list. Well rounded, loved it. Only thing that could be improved is maybe heavy curtains or draping somewhere to absorb some of the noise."

  • "Rather expensive, but the food was good. Scallops were a hit. We were late getting to the restaurant but by calling, they kept our reserved table for us. The service was great."

  • "The staff was not friendly, the food was insanely overpriced. I wouldn't have minded the cost had the food quality reflected the price, but it was by far my least favorite food of my stay in Austin. This is my first time ever writing a review, and I'm only doing so to hopefully warn future travelers looking for a great Austin restaurant. There are more affordable restaurants surrounding the Parkside that have better food for a more affordable price and the staff is actually happy to see you, and wait on you."

  • "Went for a birthday evening on a Friday, with my husband. His son drove over from Houston to surprise him. We were seated in a booth, which would have been uncomfortable for his son, and before he arrived, the hostess was very helpful in getting us moved to a table in a very crowded restaurant. Very nice! The sommelier was a lot of fun and very knowledgable. Food was very good. Only downside was the noise, as my husband is very hard of hearing and we had to do a lot of loud talking....however, with the noise level around us, no one seemed to notice. We'll definitely go back, but probably not on a weekend."

  • "I love Parkside so much that I even got married in the upstairs space and people still rave about how good the food was. EVERYTHING on the menu is exceptional and I believe it's the best HH in town!"

  • "Restaurant is very hip. We went on a Tuesday at 8pm and it was packed, with people coming in about every 5 minutes trying to get actable. Service was ok. I think our server was a little overwhelmed by her tables. However, the food made up for that. Even though we were told all portions were tasting sized, they were easily enough for one or even two. We didn't find anything we didn't like. Not a quiet place though, so be ready to speak up to the server and to your date."

  • "it was a nice place to spend with my husband, we are all about the food and and wine... a new experience. and we were not disappointed!. We finished the meal with two great desserts! One was the Ratafia, which was the first time he had seen that on a menu since our France travels a few years ago. The other was a great chocolate trio of milk chocolate gelato, dark chocolate panna cotta, and great chocolate then cookies for a nice crunch."

  • "From the service to the food to the ambience everything was perfect. I enjoyed my food very much and the service was great too. Oysters were fresh and the rabbit was cooked perfectly for my liking. Let's not forget dessert. It's out of this world. I cannot wait to go back!"

  • "Had a great date night the day after v-day. It was a little loud because of a reception upstairs and since the downstairs bathrooms were not working we had to venture into that...they were lucky i didn't steal a slice of cake!"

  • "Our table was not ready for our reservation, so management threw us a free appetizer. It's appreciated to know they're paying attention when so often it seems places don't care."

  • "Because we were visiting from out-of-town, we chose Parkside based on a review in Texas Monthly and from its menu online. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and could not have been more pleased with our experience. Parkside has an extensive raw bar and our server was extremely knowledgeable about the different kinds of oysters. Our server, Jordan, deserves an award for outstanding service. However, everyone we encountered here was very friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was very good but I think my husband would have liked something more traditional and less trendy as most dishes were. I also was pleased that the bill wasn't as big as I anticipated. Overall, our special occasion here was almost perfect."
