A word from Painted Pony
A culinary island in Southern Utah, the Painted Pony brings a touch of class--and intriguing flavors--to St. George. The restaurant, tucked away in Ancestor Square, is exceptionally clean and cozy, with contemporary art, fresh flowers, and -- in the evening -- a top notch romantic atmosphere with subdued lighting and patio dining.

If your surroundings don't clue you in, your first glance at the menu will. Painted Pony is not your standard fare. Contemporary American cuisine evidently doesn't mean just another good steakhouse, and the simply written food descriptions promise something new and intriguing for your palate.

The Painted Pony has perfected the fine art of using fresh ingredients and delicate flavoring. An exceptional wine list, generous portions, attentive service, and reasonable prices will convince you to return to "the Pony" anytime you're in St. George.

  • "We shared a wonderful lunch with family - delicious food and excellent service as always. Our party had the mac and cheese, soup of the day, asian chicken salad, turkey/bacon/avacado club, and the key lime pie. All the food was perfectly cooked and fantastic!"

  • "This is my favorite Restaurant. I live in San Diego and wish they would open a Painted Pony in my neighborhood."

  • "Pretty good restaurant in a city with few fine dining choices. Food and service generally good. Good wine list. Only disappointment was the crab cakes which seemed to be all filler with few signs of any crab."

  • "This is a very nice restaurant in St. George. I ordered the duck which was good, but my husband got the ribeye which was almost all fat. He is a meat and potatoes guy and it's hard to get him to complain about a steak but he could barely eat half of it. Salads were very good and the creme brulee was the best part. Overall I would recommend this restaurant."

  • "In the heart of St George there is a little gem. Painted Pony is really a nice place. Mostly for the excellent cuisine. The rack of lamb was perfectly cooked, the crab cakes beautifully tasty. The atmosphere was very friendly and the service pretty accurate. If you are traveling in Utah I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We discovered this restaurant on our first visit to St. George last year upon a recommendation from our hotel. Now whenever we head St. George way, we fit in a dinner or lunch at Painted Pony. Well worth the stop and the food is wonderful."

  • "Even if we arrived few minutes later than our reservation and the restaurant was about to close, we could seat and enjoy this incredible and amazing food. I got just a medium rare fillet perfectly cooked and soft like a marshmallow! The best fillet in the world for sure. Perfect also the Californian red wine and the check. Unfortunately we won't be able to come back easily as we don't live here in USA. Great service too!!"

  • "Of flavors, colors and textures. We thoroughly enjoyed the carrot-jalapeño soup, gorgeous beet salad, pea n parsnip ravioli, and coconut key lime pie! Each dish was a perfect balance of color, crunch, and creaminess. Our servers were all very nice and accommodating. The restaurant interior was rustic and elegant. The chilled water goblets were a lovely touch too! We would love to dine here when we visit St. George again!"

  • "I can honestly say that this is the best restaurant I have ever eaten in USA over 30 years. French style food but with american size portions. Fantastic meal only wish I had been able to go again."

  • "I took my fiance to dinner here for his Birthday. Our table was located in a quiet romantic corner with a nice view of the courtyard outside. Our table was promptly greeted and attended to with drinks and bread, and the waitress was very nice and friendly. We started with the infamous french onion soup that comes served in an actual onion oozing with delicious cheese, my fiance was in heaven! We ordered a ribeye and tenderloin for dinner and were very satisfied with the cut of meat and the flavor was perfect. The sides were to die for too! Loved the mac n cheese, the stilton fritters, green beans and mushrooms. Barely had room for dessert but we managed to down a white chocolate bread pudding with home-made banana icecream. Loved every bite!"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a quiet lunch at the Painted Pony. As usual, we had a wonderful experience. We had the grapefruit/scallop salad and the asian chicken salad along with fresh, warm home made bread. It was delicious and to top things off - we shared a trio of house made fruit sorbet (totally fantastic). The very best part of dining at this restaurant, is the friendly and well informed staff. Bree's friendly greetings, Brice's excellent service, and the marvellous chef all make the Pony the best place in town!"

  • "While visiting St. George on a house-hunting trip in July, my wife and I had dinner at the Painted Pony. From the hostess at the front, to our server(s) and helpers, the staff was attentive, professional and helpful at all times. However, it is the food that is the real star of this show. I had the beet salad (extraordinarily good), the pork chop (perfect) and the mango sorbet for dessert (wonderful). My wife had the filet and is still talking about how good it was. The wine list is excellent and fits the style of the food quite well. If you are in St. George, you owe it to yourself to experience dinner at the Painted Pony. It is in the historic district in northwest corner of Ancestors Square and well worth the trip."

  • "It started with a warm welcome at the door, then a gracious choice of tables (we chose the secluded booth that "all of the locals" ask for, but the tables with a view would have been fine as well). The staff - all of them - were complimentary, knowledgeable and attentive. The food was outstanding. We had the signature beet salad (WOW!!), coconut shrimp appetizer, filet and hanger steak. The filet was just ok (though truth be told, I have incredibly high standards for filet). The hanger steak was fabulous. We finished with our server's recommendation for the lemon parfait and it was superb (tip: make sure you get all of the layers in each spoonful, otherwise the lemon curd can be too "curdy."). Great ambiance, best food in the area."

  • "So. Utah is limited in terms of 'fine dining' and Painted Pony 'fills the bill'. The French Onion Soup is creative and 'to die for'."

  • "On our way home to Las Vegas from our cabin on Cedar Mountain my wife wanted a place to go out for a nice Father's Day meal. I turned to Open Table and was pleasantly surprised to find an intriguing restaurant in St George. The Painted Pony is tucked away in a quaint shopping village. We were immediately impressed with the decor. The service was attentive but not stuffy. Our waiters Brice and Dominik were great at helping make entree decisions. Our food was unique and had an amazing presentation and flavor. The almond stuffed dates wrapped in bacon were a delightful start. The beet salad was beautifully presented. The steaks were cooked to perfection. Painted Pony has done it right and is a great dining experience in St George!"

  • "I can't really say enough about this place. The food was terrific, service impeccable and wine fabulous. We had one of the best waitresses I have ever had at a restaurant . She knew when to be there and when to disappear. She also made some great suggestions- including dessert which we usually forego. But the lemon frozen soufflé was just to tempting!"

  • "Took my family here for a pre Father's Day dinner. This fine dining restaurant had a casual elegance. The food was not only inventive but delicious. One thing of particular note was how good the acoustics were. We heard little to no chatter from the table around us. Overall a very pleasant experience."

  • "For our 45th anniversary we went to our favorite St. George restaurant and, as usual, we were extremely happy with our food. Our waiter John was the perfect guide to the fare, and everything from the crab cakes, squab, prosciutto-wrapped chicken breast to the perfect Italian-style sorbets in three fruit flavors (just made!) was perfect. We ended the meal with a perfect cup of coffee roasted by a local company in nearby La Verkin, which was a pleasant discovery. Although their wine list is excellent, we brought a special bottle from our own wine cellar for the occasion (they allow this useful privilege). All in all, the perfect evening."

  • "We went to Painted Pony as a special birthday dinner. The service is amazing and impeccable. The food is beyond description with a most beautiful presentation that makes it delicious well before it ever hits your palate. I will definitely be going back without occasion to try more of their delicious food. "

  • "The Painted Pony is a little difficult to find, tucked away upstairs in a square with other more prominantly located and signed restaraunts, but it is well worth the effort to find. Beautifully prepared dishes utulizing fresh ingredients are lovingly served by a very attentive staff. Good wine list is an added bonus. We were in town on vacation and celebrated our anniversary while in St, George and the staff helped make our special evening more special with the premium table, service, meal, and well wishes. They even gave us a celebratory desert topped with a candle."

  • "This is the most upscale restaurant in St. George, and I like to take out of town guests here. The service and atmosphere are excellent and a good selection of wines is available. The price is reasonable considering the quality. "

  • "My wife and I were beginning a couple of weeks of hiking in the Southwest and decided to find a spot to eat in St. George. We found Painted Pony on Open Table and we're glad we did -- we had a very nice evening. Food, service and ambience were all very nice. And I thought it ironic that we enjoyed a great bottle of wine just steps from Brigham Young's summer home!"

  • "What can I say . . . . from the time we arrived at the Host's Station to tell her who we were until we left the experience was outstanding. They accommodated our request to sit outside, the food was unreal and the service in my humble opinion is the best in St. George of all the restaurants we've dined in. The crab cakes are wonderful and the Coconut Shrimp appetizer is a meal unto itself. Wonderful flavors and incredible presentations. Our compliments to the chef(s)!!!"

  • "My husband and I were so looking forward to eating here. I ordered the monk fish and he ordered the ribeye. The ribeye was ordered medium rare and came out uncooked. Truly raw. Then sent back and then of course came out over cooked. The monk fish tasted bad and was over cooked. Our server was horrified. He was gracious and comped our entries which was totally unnecessary. Lovely atmosphere and amazing service. "

  • "We enjoyed excellent service for our dinner. We had mussels, an entree salad and the hanger steak. Portions are oversized and we had no room for dessert. The mussels were from Chile, good sized and well flavored. The scallop salad was a tremendous value. The steak was very large and perfectly prepared. "

  • "The food and service were good. The server was the better of the two. Last year the food was worth $35 a plate. This year it was worth $25. The online reservation noted a birthday and asked for a nice seat. Place empty at 5pm and neither happened nor was noted."
