Ox and Angela RestaurantWe dined at Ox and AngelaWe dined at Ox and Angela as part of Calgary's Big Taste. This was our first and only Big Taste experience, and our first time at Ox and Angela. From the time we walked in the door we felt welcomed and enjoyed the upbeat and comfortable atmosphere. We were thrilled be the special bottles of water that appeared at our table, especially loving the option of sparkling water on tap. Every morsel that appeared at our table was delicious. The fritters and asparagus were a highlight, but nothing disappointed. We will definitely come back. Though I rated this great for foodies, I hope those who would not define themselves that way still come for the experience. The server was attentive and gave great suggestions (one of which was a rosé that my mom enjoyed very much). This isn't my first time here, and it definitely won't be my last... The ambience is warm and trendy and the place was packed which always is a good sign. The food? There is no real words to describe as it just dazzled our senses. We ordered the paellas with wine first, then decided on a variety of tapas, followed by some impressive desserts and coffee. We were in Spain last year and so we knew what to expect but this had the wow factor. Highly recommend the chocolate dessert with sea salt = incredible.
Great service too, our server explained all the dishes in detail and suggested great food/wine pairings.
Thumbs up!!!!5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMA nice change for Mother's dayThere 4 of us had the $21 “brunch table” menu. Pricey, but tasty and I'm a big fan of the variety. Many of the serving sizes leave you wanting more (I could have had 4 of the stuffed dates and croquettes), but by the time we were done, I was contently full. I did notice that we got the same amount of salad for 4 people as when we had brunch for 2 people. Service started out very good, but as the rush got into full swing, we lost track of out server and it took a long time to get another pot of coffee and even longer to get our bill. Since it was a very busy Mother’s day, I understand, but hopefully they will staff up better next time. Made a reservation and we were seated quickly upon entering the restaurant. The waiter is very friendly and helpful in assisting us with ordering. Our waiter was extremely knowledgable about the wines and the food preparation and attentive to our service even though the restaurant was very busy. Kobe beef was to die for. Since it was our first time at Ox and Angela we decided to order the suggested tasting menu for the evening. At $45 per person it more than enough to satisfy our appetites. The multiple courses came one after the other at suitable intervals. Although we have had tapas elsewhere, it was an experience trying new things. We liked them all. The cerrano ham was delicious and the steak was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately we did not receive the potatoes until sometime after the steak which we thought would have been delicious together. Paired with a bottle of Spanish wine it was the perfect meal.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMTasty But SparseIf you're in the mood for Tapas then this is the place to go. However, with the definition of the word Tapas (which means small savory dishes), don't expect to get stuffed. We also tried the Paella which was good and flavourful but I preferred to have more protein in it. I was surprised to find out that it was a vegetarian Paella.
Overall, the experience was alright.
