Diner Reviews
  • "Two girlfriends and I chose to celebrate a birthday at Orzo. Our server was very attentive without being intrusive. Several nice touches - when my friend went to the restroom, the manager noticed her rumpled napkin on the table and came over and folded it. And not in an annoying or pretentious way. And when we ordered a dessert to share, it came with a candle in it. We had not asked for that, but our server had taken notice of our gift exchange and surprised my friend. These are little touches that go a long way toward making a dining experience special and memorable. We will definitely return."

  • "Food was delicious and the service excellent. Plus you do not have to spend a fortune to have a gourmet dinner."

  • "Orzo used to be one of my favorite spots in Cville. It's changed. The cooks are now chefs, and the menu has been "upgraded." This is not an improvement. My dinner with two friends was uniformly disappointing. Pasta overcooked, sauces (linguine pomodoro, linguine with clams) were over spiced and not particularly flavorful. Mussels unsatisfactory. Probably won't be going back."

  • "I have never been disappointed with the food at this restaurant. I even think it keeps improving, if that is possible."

  • "This is a really good place for a group of adults who want to be able to hear each other and take time over conversation and excellent food. Noticed a large group of evening-dress college students in the outer room, so it's not just for old folks. Large charcuterie plate was good, if not the best. Most of us had the special, pork cheeks. A bit like a highrise complex--geometric items separate from each other. But the lightly fried cheeks, the soft bread pudding, the poached egg, and a hint of applesauce make it a texture/taste experience to create as you demolish the buildings--moisture and combination in process. Impressive. Excellent wine, friendly, unobtrusive, efficient, professional service. Our friends are on first-name with owner."

  • "The dishes at Orzo's are inventive, make use of local produce, and taste terrific. The hummus is great, though be careful if you don't tolerate garlic well. The root soup was a creative wonder. Great sides, risotto was excellent. Service was good, and the staff were extremely friendly. They cared about your dining experience, and gave us some extra hummus and bread to take home with our leftovers. It's a bit pricey. We paid $52 plus tip for two, and we didn't have drinks, but you can't get food this good on the cheap."

  • "Orzo is a standard for us, especially when guests are in town. It provides a consistently excellent experience with a creative regular menu, interesting specials, emphasis on local foods, just-right service, and its wine-bar/open kitchen layout. There are obviously lots of nice restaurants in C'ville to choose from. For us, Orzo in particularly impressive because it always delivers a top-notch experience."

  • "I had the Burratta appetizer and the Pork Roast entree and they were both delicious. The server was gracious and attentive, suggesting wine and checking in. They also did not clear the plates until everyone was done which is something Charlottesville restaurants do all the time and it drives me nuts as a slow eater. Everyone else enjoyed their food too, no exceptions, I highly recommend."

  • "Fantastic food, pleasant and competent service. "Energetic" is a good way to describe the noise level. The restaurant has a narrow, elongated footprint with tables close together along one side of the restaurant and the bar and kitchen along the opposite side. Not packed when we were there, but busy, and noise level was moderate, but could get very energetic at peak hours. Course pacing was pleasantly un-rushed, and our server was quite pleasant and prompt without being intrusive. Menu was concise but well-designed; wine and bar menu was thoughtfully composed and comprehensive. Appetizer, salads and entrees were excellent. Overall, a very pleasant experience."

  • "Orzo has consistently delicious food. Everything I have had is fresh, unique, and tasty. My friend and I stayed for a very long lunch, and we were did not feel pushed to get out. Service is pleasant. I would definitely eat there again, and recommend it to friends. Although lunch was not cheap $13 for a veggie burger and fries, it was plenty of food, and a better value than many downtown restaurants."

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants. We love the wines. The owners know the wine list extensively can always recommend a great bottle. We like to sit in the bar. The ambience is quite nice. We went for spring break week in the menu was wonderful and the food met our expectations. The calamari was as good as ever, and the steak was great. The brownie dessert with vanilla gelato finished it off beautifully. Thanks for another great meal."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner at Orzo. I think I enjoy their appetizers most and would just get a couple starters and skip the entrée if I return again. The merguez, burrata & halloumi are all very tasty. I also enjoyed the panna cotta dessert."

  • "Frequently eat at Orzo as food ambiance and price point are terrific. Unfortunately almost every waitress has an attitude and some are downright rude. Can ruin the overall dining experience."

  • "Very appealing winter menu. Four of us enjoyed two appetizers (burrata; octopus) and four entrees: lamb ragout, Bolognese pasta, skirt steak, and pork loin. All perfectly prepared and elegantly presented. Wines by the glass were good, but not exceptional. Probably we'd have done better to order one or two bottles. Service was timely and pleasant. Our main disappointment was the very high noise level which made it impossible for us to converse in normal voices. We found ourselves speaking loudly (probably annoying adjacent diners) and leaning across the table (inelegant) to hear and be heard. I discovered later that there were some booths far back, off from the main dining room. Should have asked to reserve a booth -- next time!"

  • "We went on a Saturday night. We arrived at 6:30. Wine, appetizer and salad all appeared in a timely manner. Then there was a 45 minute wait for the main course. We had decided at the beginning of the meal to order wine by the glass, not a bottle. During the long hiatus, we were offered more wine twice, with the staff more attentive than at any other time. Had we ordered more glasses of wine, we would have spent well over the money a bottle would have cost. Caesar salad was excellent; the frito misto was heavier on cauliflower than on calamari; porchetta was excellent and linguine with clams satisfactory. I expected more for the price ($110 for two people). Also, it was hard to hear my companion and the tables were too close together."

  • "Delicious meal with great service. The salmon was cooked just right. A slight crunch to the outside edge soft and sweet inside. The Orzo signature home made hummus is faboo. We loved the chunky texture and garlicyness. Thanks."

  • "The space reminded me of a NYC area restaurant with tables fairly close together and a moderate amount of noise. The menu is a one pager focusing on pasta entrees and meat dishes and other items like appetizers. Everything had a gourmet touch and you could tell the chef put creativity into the dishes. I liked the single glass wine list as it offered a unique selection of wines that you don't normally see. I had the chicken confit w/ fresh spinach and roasted potatoes. It was delicious and paired nicely with a Portugese wine recommended by my server. The flavors were balanced and worked together on the plate. For dessert I had the chocolate pot which was like a chocolate mousse. I paired it with one of the Ports and it was amazing!"

  • "I made a reservation for my boyfriend and me for Valentine's Day, and we were both very pleased with Orzo. Neither of us had been before, but we would definitely go back. The Mac and Cheese with pancetta was really delicious, though I did leave feeling completely stuffed. There are a good selection of wines, too. We really liked the feeling of the restaurant, especially since we were seated upstairs with a view that looked over all of downstairs. It definitely made for a special Valentine's Day dinner."

  • "Wonderful food, good choices for everyone, even with a vegan in our group. Nice pace to the meal, not to fast or to slow. Our server was attentive but left us to have our meal in peace...very nice evening."

  • "My wife and I made our first visit to Orzo's on Valentines night. They had a four course fixed price menu. We also added a bottle of wine. Overall the experience was excellent. I had requested a table away from the front door and kitchen and our table was in a perfect location. The food was excellent as well as the service. We will go back."

  • "I've been to Orzo several times over the past few years and I'm never disappointed. The food is exquisite and the pacing is perfect. I never feel rushed and I'm never craning my neck for the server. This is my go-to place when treating out of town guests because I know the menu is varied enough for different tastes and everyone will leave happy."

  • "This was our second time there, and we were disappointed since our first experience was so good. That was mostly due to the service. We often felt ignored by the waitress, as she was spending time at a table 2 away from us who arrived after us. Their food and menus seemed to arrive more quickly. In addition, when our entrees came 3 arrived, but then there was a 5 minute wait for the 4th, with no apology. The food was all very good, but at the end when they brought a dessert with a candle in it for our daughter (we told them it was her birthday), they never brought dessert menus for the rest of us. When I brought this to the attention of the manager he did express sincere regret and did take 20% off the bill. We may return, but won't rush."

  • "Went to use the restroom, asked a server and she sent me out the back which takes you in a common area with other businesses. It is not marked well so I was really confused and had to ask another guest where it was. The bathroom is also not very nice. Very strange."

  • "My fiance and I went here on our dating anniversary for restaurant week. Our waitress was almost immediately at our table filling our water glasses. I asked for a wine suggestion a few minutes later, and the suggested wine was among the cheapest (which is what I was looking for), and fantastic. All of the food we got, between the two appetizers, each salad, and the two entrees were fantastic. I got salmon and my fiance got steak. She ordered it medium and it was still deliciously tender. My salmon was just barely cooked enough so that it was still juicy and falling apart. The service was impeccable, without being overbearing. She consistently filled our wine and water glasses without interrupting our conversation. Great experience!"

  • "In spite of the owner insisting we didn't have a reservation (he "graciously" found us a table), the remainder of the evening was wonderful. They have an extensive wine by the glass list which is wonderful. We ordered the burrata and the mussels first. The mussels are probably some of the best we have had and could be a meal unto themselves. The burrata was good but paled against the mussels. We had hoped to order the lamb but they were out (at 6pm) so our main dishes were the octopus and roast chicken. The chicken was ordinary but well prepared. The octopus was extraordinary and highly recommend it.For dessert we had the chocolate pot de creme ( like eating a chocolate cloud) and the tiramisu which was equally creamy and light."

  • "Orzo's used to be our favorite restaurant when the previous chef was there...the new chef, Chef Tommy, turns out to be even better!...of particular note, Orzo has a vegan menu at all times with several choices...overall comment: easily the best restaurant in Charlottesville!"

  • "Overall, a very nice dinner. We would happily return. The menu is creative, and the dishes we ordered were certainly well prepared and nicely presented. The wine-by-the-glass menu was extensive, good, and reasonably priced, though the pour was not overly generous. Service was attentive and helpful, but there was a noticeably long gap between completion of our appetizers and arrival of our entrees. The dining room was pleasant, but, as the restaurant's name implies, it is informal and relatively spare. We dined early on a Sunday evening and were seated at the rear of the room, so most of our time was quiet. By the time we left, the room had filled and the energy level had picked up. Among the finer restaurants in Charlottesville."

  • "We had a very nice birthday dinner for my husband. Grilled steak was cooked perfectly and tasty. Homemade ravioli was delicious and filled with meat. I had the pork ragout which was wonderful, but the whole wheat pasta was stuck together and very chewy in several places. My only complaint about the service was that we were going to order a starter and have a cocktail, but the waiter wanted us to order all at once claiming the apps came out really quickly and he could time it better. Not sure, what that meant, but he did a good job. We have always had good meals at Orzo."

  • "Orzo has a varied menu and extensive wine list. The food is consistently good no matter what you choose. I feel confident taking guests to Orzo because I know there will be something appealing on the menu and that it will be tasty and creative. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the service is very good, attentive without hovering."

  • "We were staying at the Omni over the weekend; a lot of time was centered on the mall. We looked at Hamiltons and several other places for our "signature" meal of the trip, but since the weekend was centered on wine, found this place in the opposite direction a couple blocks away, & glad we did. House made hummus with the bread was a nice touch. Scallop appetizer was good, but the mussels were excellent; asked for more bread to soak up the broth. Three of us had the lamb - very nice, and the polenta with spicy carrots on one side and lamb gravy was excellent. Brussel sprouts were great; wish there were more. Wife had salmon on spaghetti squash(!) - also very good. Chocolate pot de creme was a great finish. Gluten free items."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our time Orozo. It was a great place to celebrate UVA's victory over UNC. The food was not your standard fare. It was both enticing and intriguing. The server was very helpful. Recommendations were good. particularly enjoyed the wine he recommended. My only complaint was the long delay in receiving our entree. The restaurant was busy but the table next to us received their meal long before we did. However, that said I look forward to going back."
