A word from Nizza La Bella
Nizza La Bella is a casual, reasonably priced, neighborhood bistro that features the lively French and Italian Riviera inspired cuisine of the city of Nice. We serve simple rustic style comfort food in a relaxed and intimate traditional French Bistro ambiance. The heart of our restaurant is the kitchen's massive imported French wood-fired oven, where pizzas, roasts, seafood, fish, gratins, desserts and hearth breads emerge from its fire-lit glow. The zinc top bar is the convivial center of the restaurant offering artisan cocktails, aperitifs, spirits, cordials, wines and beers. Our cozy dining room seats 40 with additional seats at the bar. We can accommodate most small to mid-size parties and larger parties upon request.Continued

  • "We had a pleasant experience and enjoyed the food, but our waiter delivered our drinks and walked away without taking our order. I assumed another guy was our waiter and finally got HIS attention, and he said, let me tell your waiter. So we were there almost 30 minutes before placing our order. Thankfully, our food came quickly, and we made our concert on time."

  • "I thought if we made a reservation we would get a better table. There were only two of us and they had 4 booths open. They gave us a small table back by the kitchen. The booths never filled up the whole time we were there. I would have liked a little more consideration since they had a lot of open booths."

  • "La Nizza Bella on San Pablo in Albany CA is one of my absolute favorite restaurants. Dining there is like being transported to a European bistro--actually a cross between French and Italian. For me it is always fabulous mussels, great nicoise salad, and excellent pizza. They also have a small, but very well-priced, selection of good wines. I keep going back again and again with small groups of friends. Everyone who joins me is more than happy to return."

  • "Great Hearty Food!. Wow! Spaghetti with Meatballs was reminicent of trip in Florence, Italy. The pasta with manila clams was soulful and plentiful as well as the mussels with aoli and fritters was a definite hit with the wife. The crust of the pizza lombardi was not up to par - I prefer it to be a little more crisp, but the topping met my expectation when I eyed it across another table. The booths gave a little more privacy which was good since we came on Valentines Day - so the restaurant was packed when we got there at 8PM. Will definitely come back on a more relaxed evening other than Valentines Day to try other dishes on our next visit ."

  • "Food is fair; could be a lot better, and probably would be except that the menu has about 50 items on it; more than the kitchen can be expected to prepare carefully. I would like it better if there were perhaps 8 items, carefully chosen (pizza is another subject) which could be fresh, carefully prepared, and flavorful; my partner's fettucine with shrimp was tasteless; my duck was not well cooked (some parts were almost overdone, some were almost raw)."

As noted by other reviewers they seem insensitive to taking and serving people in a fair way. awe waited awhile and had reservations, but others were seated and served before us who arrived later. asubtracts from a good experience"

  • "From the exterior, I was a little bit concerned about this restaurant, as I'd found it online and it only had 3.5 stars. My experience was a solid 4 stars. The food was great -- nothing fancy or presented with a designer's eye, but the flavors were great, the textures of the food (mussels, pizza and bouillabase) were great, and portions were generous. It was crowded and the "crowd" there seemed mostly neighborhood folks and older than I, but at the end of the day...it's all about the meal, and I enjoyed it a great deal :-)"

  • "Sorry to say that this otherwise seemingly attractive place where I had dined several times in the distant past was very disappointing. The food was quite poorly done. I ordered 3 appetizers: frites, mushrooms and spinach. The mushrooms were swimming in an overly sweet and heavy sauce. The spinach was practically tasteless. The fries were too soft. The noise level was really uncomfortable, even though we sort of were shielded in our high- backed booth. The booth seat was extremely uncomfortable. I was so relieved to leave. I usually shun surveys and reviews, but when the experience is this bad, I feel compelled to publicize."

  • "We had a mushroom pizza and the bouillabaisse. The pizza crust was thicker than other thin crust pizzas, but was still light and had a really good texture. The flavor was subtle. The leftover was even better heated on an iron skillet at home, with more cheese added. Then, it was excellent! The bouillabaisse was delicious. All the seafood was perfectly cooked to just done. We spent $54 for 2 of us including tip, no wine. The pizza was a pretty good size and we had leftover. Nizza La Bella is one of those in-between restaurants. Not fancy enough for special occasions, though charming; but too expensive for neighborhood hangout which it feels llke. In my opinion, this restaurants would be great for semi-casual special occasions."

  • "Though we had a reservation, New Year's Eve waited for a table. However, staff was apologetic and offered us drinks while waiting. Table opened up within 15 minutes and from there the evening was perfect. Every dish was fine and the service was friendly and excellent. There was the proper air of festiveness and though the staff was clearly working hard, the service remained warm and the feeling was generous. I've been coming here for years, and tonight they earned my loyalty."

  • "Went to The Albany Twin movie theatre on Solano and this was right around the corner. It's warm and inviting with excellent wood oven pizzas using fresh high quality ingredients. Our Caesar salad was one of the best. Will definitely go back when in the neighborhood."

  • "Positives: Very good salads, pizzas and two thumbs up on the steak frites. The onion soup is a must. Server warm and appropriately attentive without being intrusive. Negatives: The wait after ordering was marginally too long. When the waiter comes by and says "Your food will be up very soon" you know even he is aware of the issue. (The restaurant was busy, but not packed.) In order to optimize the use of this small narrow space the restaurant uses a series of booths with narrow, unpadded wooden benches as seating. We're not a fat family, we're just tall. We won't take a booth if we go there again, it is just too uncomfortable."

  • "Though I made reservations for a Sunday night at 5:30, we didn't finish until after 8:00pm (and there were only two of us)! The food was good (especially the mac & cheese!) but it looked like there was ONE server who was doing everything - taking and bringing out orders AND tending the bar. Since we were celebrating a birthday, we wanted to order desert (also good) but from the time she dropped oft the dessert menu at our table to the time she actually took our dessert order, it was a good 30 minutes. Then another 20 minutes or so until the desserts arrived."

  • "One-of-a-kind. Authentic traditional Provencal cuisine "Nizza" is old Provencal for Nice (the city). Old-fashioned but with a touch of glamor. and the food is great. In addition to salmon, pork, steak frites, Nizza la Bella serves mussels, burgers, soupe a l'oignon, mac and cheese, pizza, salad nicoise (really delicious) and more. They also have a wonderful assortment of desserts. There's a small but lively bar scene. Waitpeople are extremely cordial. The tall booths of dark wood feel very private. If you want to have a real talk with someone, take them there. (Though if it's crowded they save the booths for parties of more than two.) I recommend the French daiquiri or the Havana sidecar. Excellent wine list. Intimate and unique."

  • "The waiter greeted us and gave us information on the specials. He seemed fine. Then I asked what something would cost and his attitude was unpleasant for the rest of the night. He gave us what we needed, but was minimal in interaction and was in no hurry to get to us, even as the restaurant slowed down and he was no longer in demand. He hung out talking with other employees near the bar, he did not engage in conversation with us, and he seemed put out. I guess he assumed that we would be cheap with our tip if we wanted to see what things cost. In my opinion, that is the wrong way to treat customers. Service should be at a high standard at all times. We are good tippers, but not with him."

  • "My friend and I both ordered the small version of the macaroni and cheese, wondering how it would be different from what we were accustomed to as home food. We were happily surprised by the freshness (made to order, a 15-minute wait), served in individual low-sided casseroles, a rich and delicious combination of flavors and great texture of the pasta, crunchy topping--a memorable dish. I had the special mushrooms as a side--again, a generous portion--and my friend had the fresh spinach with its adornments, again made to order and perfect. We were too amply filled to order dessert, but maybe next time. Mac and cheese never tasted so good. The variety of dishes listed on the menu definitely is in our memory to consider for the future."

  • "The French onion soup has dropped a full level: broth had no depth, just onions; cheese was thick, browned, and utterly tasteless. It's now average, whereas once it was superior, the best version around, but no longer. Pizza Bouiabaissa was good, crust not quite as good as it used to be. Frisee salad had mature greens but delightful dressing; by far the best of the meal. Burger was dry and unsalted, altho bleu on top was a lovely quality. Chicken paillard was huge but boring: plain pan-fried breast, limp greasy fries, no sauce or dip. Desserts are excellent; coffee is very good. Summary: for salad and dessert Nizza is great. For the rest, not so much any more. It's a tough time to be a mid-priced restaurant."

  • "Even with a reservation and the restaurant empty but for 3 other customers there was a fuss when I wouldn't sit all the way in the back by the kitchen. Was told "others have reservations". Well, so did I. During the time I was there the place remained half empty. Wine list was not complete on the black board so had to ask for alternatives, which luckily there was. Food was oily and bread overly salty. Seems they pay attention to their regulars while shunning new patrons. Won't go back."
