Diner Reviews
  • "The menu was limited but smartly paired with impressive wines. I enjoyed the heirloom tomato starter which included watermelon (very nice) and seaweed (unusual and too fishy). We all had the halibut main which was tender and perfectly sautéed. Nico is located is a great neighborhood and the decor is very stylish. The service was slow (which was surprising because the restaurant is small with a limited number of tables). Last thing I'd add... the wine by glass was priced by the 1/2 glass for $10 and $20 for a "full glass"... so I went for the "full glass" which I expected to be an extremely healthy pour but it was hardly "full"... I almost asked if she misunderstood my order and poured me a 1/2 glass in error. Oh well."

  • "This is our third visit to Nico. The first visit blew us away. The second was just not as good as the first and a disappointment. However, on my third visit, every course was really great and of course the wine pairings were fantastic. These service was friendly and good. Overall, a very positive experience. We tried the rabbit rillet, the fantastic utterly tender squid, and the lamb. Every dish was great. My only quibble was that it got so noisy that everybody was shouting. I would really like to see more sound deadening."

  • "Impeccable food, creative, artistic execution and presentation, extremely friendly service and attention to detail. Beautiful space, clean. Overall though the creativity and tastiness of the dishes are phenomenal and will keep coming back for many more dinners here!"

  • "The octopus and salmon were outstanding. We were helped to order a wine which we liked very much. d"

  • "Went here to celebrate my birthday. The service was excellent, with just one perceptible delay getting my cocktail (but the server was really apologetic). The food was gorgeously plated and delicious, with novel but compatible ingredients. I ordered four courses (rabbit rillette bites, squid appetizer, braised lamb loin with red spinach and Little Gem greens, and macerated berries with white chocolate foam), with a glass of Chateauneuf de Pape. Portions were FINE (don't understand what others had a problem with), and we were FULL after four courses (we did not order a cheese course). Little bit pricey ($62 apiece before gratuities). The room is comfortable, and we could still hear each other when the dining room was full at 8 pm."

  • "Great place for essentially a four course dinner or more courses if you share plates. Superior food which is perfectly seasoned. Very, very noisy."

  • "Often restaurants don't match up to your first experience. The first time we ate at Nico's was extraordinary in all respects. Great wine parings and food that was about the best we had eaten. Tis 2d visit was at the same level. The food was exceptional. The lamb was the best I have ever had. The rabbit was perfect. The wine pairings made every dish come alive. Service was spot on. We will be back!"

  • " If you are willing to trust a talented chef and have an eclectic palate this is a great place for you. if on the other hand you want the classic or more traditional French bistro you should look elsewhere. the servers were like an oiled machine each course with new cutlery, each plate taken at the proper moment. The kitchen definitely had its game face on perfectly presented and prepared courses. Would keep this on my short list of great finds ."

  • "Send off dinner for friends. Really a french menu, loved the chef and the varied selection, not Californian! Everything was superb. Try the Lebanese wine."

  • "The menu changes every day and wine recommendations are suggested for each course choice. The wine list covers a wide range of prices and styles of wines. Nico is one of the best dining options in the City."

  • "Had a fantastic dinner here. The service was extraordinary. We had many dietary restrictions and the waitress worked with the Chef to make sure all could be met without compromising the absolutely delicious food. The Chef even came by to say hello at the end of our meal. I highly recommend this spot!"

  • "Main course: 3 miscroscopic potatos with a mushroom: $23. Pretentiousness with which it is presented: priceless."

  • "A night when it just about all comes together. Yellow corn soup (superb!) and the duck rillete - excellent in taste and presentation. The beet salad was superb by incorporating flavor into the beets; the English peas with goat cheese/quinoa was an excellent marriage of tastes and textures; the med rare veal was cooked to perfection - excellent taste as were the miniature vegetables. Companion thought the lamb was perfect in terms of preparation and taste. Had all 3 desserts: the summer berries were perfect; the cherry dish was OK; and the white nectarine didn't work for me because of the macaroon, but the nectarines were perfect. Loved the warm interiors: wood tables and chairs. Service by Kristy: the best I've had in a very long time."

  • "Can't say enough good things about our meal. Everything cooked to perfection. It was our first time there, and we will definitely be going back."

  • "Artistry on a plate, each dish is composed to be visually stunning which compliments the freshness, textural diversity, and taste of the ingredients. Every dish was well balanced - seasoned to enhance without masking the natural flavor of the main attraction. Loved our appetizers of tempura snap peas and oysters, and main dishes salmon and duck. Perfectly cooked, and the suggested wine pairings worked well. Don't skip dessert, the summer berries, sable and sabayon was great! Service was good, except for the mishap of getting the incorrect wine with our appetizers, otherwise attentive and courteous. Nice touch for the owner to stop by our table, and the salted caramels at the end was perfect ending to a wonderful dinner."

  • "Nico favors elegant and brightly-flavored dishes over quantity; three courses will leave diners delighted, satisfied and not over-stuffed. The wine list is interesting... but, like the food, hardly bargain priced."

  • "The food was excellent across the board and the wine pairings were outstanding. The service was very good and our waitress made an outstanding suggestion to diversify the wine pairings. I recommend, if those in the a group are willing, to share some of the half glasses of wine to experience the thinking behind the wine pairings. The duck main course was cooked perfectly and showed imagination. The beet and squid starters were really good. Leave room for the desserts, which are also inspired. The location is also off the beaten track and parking right in front of the restaurant was not a problem at 6 p.m. on a Saturday in San Francisco."

  • "Because it was so good the first time we went back. This time we knew the plates were going to be small but the main entres were rather uninteresting. Too bland. If a menu has only 4 items for mains than each one should be unique. I would suggest choosing from the starters. Friendly staff."

  • "Nico exceed my expectations! I heard great things before I booked my reservation, but the food was incredible! I had the oysters and the halibut and they were both top notch! The halibut was the most memorable dish I have had in a long time - great wine list too! My friend and I split the chocolate dessert and the basil sorbet that came with the dish was divine! I will definitely be back and will be making recommendations to all of my friends. Bravo Nico!"

  • "Service was outstanding. Intricate flavor blends and a beautiful presentation. Cheese is is not to be missed and the salted carmels at the end were a lovely surprise "

  • "The food is excellent and beautifully presented but the portions are minuscule. It was the most penurious wine pour I've had in a long time, and itat $19.00 for a glass of pinot noir, they should be more generous. The service was "technically correct," but there was no sense that anyone cared if we were satisfied or would ever return, i.e. the place has no "soul." Too bad, It's two blocks from my house, and I eat out a lot, but I won't be back."

  • "Outstanding food and service in well appointed atmosphere. Wine pairing may be wonderful for those who are willing to spend a great deal. The corkage fee of $ 30.00 is excessive in my opinion. Will consider return visits for special occasions since it is within walking distance from ou home."

  • "Friendly service. Beautiful presentations and delicious combinations. Loved everything but the veal was a little tough."

  • "We enjoyed our meal at Nico, the food was excellent, the bread fantastic!, and the service was impeccable. And tables were not too close together which was a very nice touch. However, we felt there are not enough options in each of the course offerings on the menu, and several are overpriced. With tip our meal for two was $165, which I found to be high. Their house wines by the glass are $20 and $22, which I found to be exorbitant as the only choices (they had 'tastes' of the same fro $10 and $11, but they are only tastes); it would be nice if they had some other less expensive offerings. Corkage at $30 per bottle is out-of-bounds. For people who can afford it, Nico is very nice option. It is unfortunately too rich for my blood."

  • "The wine pairings with each dish are terrific and interesting. The food was very carefully prepared and the staff friendly. Once you add the wine pairings (which are not great pours), you end up with a stiff price tag."

  • "We enjoyed our evening at Nico, but we weren't overwhelmed. There were very few choices on the menu, and the portions were disproportionately small for the prices. Service was friendly, prompt, and good."

  • "Wonderful food and service, but the owners need to do something to dampen the noise. Impossible to talk with our guests. "

  • "The food was very good, nicely presented. The price point was a little high for the portion sizes and also for wine. However, I really liked that individual courses were paired with recommended wines on the menu and that one was given the option to order by "taste" or by glass. "

  • "The food was fantastic -- not too heavy, not too light. Moreover, the portion sizes were perfect. I would encourage you to pick at least two if not three of the courses. "

  • "We went a while ago. It is very twee but the food was pretty darn good. I had the pork and it was excellent, my friend's scallops were more or less an appetizer portion - very tasty, though. The oysters were again tasty but practically embryonic, and quite pricey. The room is ultra-hip minimalist decor, almost barren. It looks like they went to the Presidio and gathered some twigs, also fairly noisy. Our waiter was friendly but for the prices I'd want someone who tucked his shirt in (I know, I know, trendy). The wine list is a bit steep but some interesting non-California selections. Wine and beer only, I could have used a stiff drink to handle the hipness. In sum, very good food but a bit too precious."

  • "The entire meal was wonderful...creative combinations beautifully plated. Service was spot on. The wines were beautifully matched. The cheese plate was an uninspired finish to a perfect meal: six big, thick slabs of one kind of very bland soft cow cheese, rather than a mixture of hard and soft, mild and strong, that one usually gets in a cheese plate at a good restaurant. We sent it back and ordered a wonderful desert instead. So enjoy the starters, main course and desserts. But if you want a wonderful cheese plate, go to Quince."

  • "Very nice addition to the Pac/Presidio Hts dining scene. Very good and interestingly prepared food (wonderful Parsnip soup, great beet salad, very tasty lamb loin, for example), all at reasonable prices. Service was very good, attentive but not overbearing. The wine list is small but has a great many interesting and diverse selections...in fact, it's a great wine list as it includes many excellent choices, but is short enough to be navigable and not leave you confused or torn by too many choices. Prices, unfortunately, especially for the recommended food pairing glasses, are very high, so better to order a bottle (though even bottle prices are somewhat high...3-4X retail). Overall, a great addition to the SF neighborhood dining scene. "

  • "From the start, a great experience. Hostess was friendly and accommodating. Server was attentive at all the right times without being intrusive. We both ordered the salmon entree and it was cooked perfectly -- exquisitely moist but not translucent. We would love to have had just a bit more of the lemon sauce. Beignets were good but could have benefited from more assertive seasoning and crisper finish on the pastry. A lovely meal marred only by loud patrons at neighboring table."

  • " Four of us went for dinner last Saturday and it was perfection all around! The ingredients were of very high quality, and the perfectly cooked dishes were beautifully composed. The menu is small and changes daily, so repeat visits are definitely in order. The staff was wonderful and totally on top of things. Our server made a wine recommendation that went perfectly with our meal. Our friends had brought a bottle, too, and since we ordered another they didn't charge corkage. Next time I will try their wine pairings, which thoughtfully come in two sizes of pours so you won't be staggering out! The setting is stylish and though it is casual, it feels elegant. The chef visits eqch table, a nice touch. Highly recommended."

  • "When a restaurant harrasses me about getting there on time with a confirmation telephone call, I generally assume the establishment would be happy if I were early. Not so! It was as if we had committed a crime to come 15 minutes early for our reservation. And we were missing a Giants game just for the privilege. So we walked back to our parked car and sat listening to the Giants on the radio because there was no place to wait in the restaurant. The food here is intended to be secondary to the wine. We prefer it the opposite. The chef came out to each table. I know he is trying hard, but the front staff and the general structure left us feeling unwanted, despite his attempts to Chapeau-it with his cordiality at the end of the meal."

  • "Reservation honored on time, friendly server, good wine by the glass. Presentation of food very "in". The problem--the taste and quality. The beet/rhubard salad a perfect picture-the dressing bland at best; 3 oysters executed on a bed of miny black stones--clever --need flavorful dipping sauce. The duck and pork entrees were accompanied With roasted mini veggies--nice --both meets were flavorless and difficult to slice with sharp knife provided. I wanted to love this place--they can make it work with a few tweaks."
