Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed the food, but the atmosphere was not what we expected. We ended up at a table in a row of tables that ran across the middle of the restaurant. The other tables were about 3 inches away on each side of us, which made it very difficult to hear each other across the table. It was disappointing because we had made the reservation months ago, and specified that it was our anniversary. Not only did they not acknowledge that it was our anniversary (a table right by us got a special dessert with a candle!), but we were at one of the worst tables in the restaurant. As for food, what we ate was good, but while I understand that they order their fish fresh and things can run out, at 8:30 they were out of 2 different starters we picked."

  • "We asked our server to space out our courses which worked OK until they brought the entree well before we were finished the our mussels. Not the end of the world as the mussels were mediocre at best. The crudo, heirloom tomato salad and black bass, however, all were excellent. On a different subject, we didn't quite understand all the people who looked like they had just come from the beach."

  • "They sat us 30 min after our actual reservation time and initially after the 30 minute wait, tried to seat us in the bar. In hindsight, the bar table might of been quieter with more space. The server did not come by for 15 minutes. Food was good but not worth having to wait with a reservation. The server forgot a side dish but we decided it was not even worth it to ask."

  • "We expected more from Nico given the reviews and menu options. It did not meet our expectations when it came to the main dishes. The appetizers like crudo and octopus were delicious but the pasta and fish fell way short. First of the squid ink pasta was not fresh and lacked any flavor. Second the black bass we ordered as the main dish was over salted. Given the price point of the restaurant higher quality was expected."

  • "if you are not living or working in this part of the city you probably didn't know this great restaurant!!! don't miss a chance to check it out I think it will be pleasantly pleasing!!"

  • "One of the better meals we have had in Chicago. From the appetizer to desert. Soft shell crab with ricotta was phenomenal. Ricotta did not over power the delicate crab. The Bronzino was accented just right with tomatoes, balsamic and basil. Lobster spaghetti was heavier but you got to love fresh pasta."

  • "I was in Chicago on business and my spouse flew out to spend a couple of days in Chicago. He made a number of dinner reservations and Nico Osteria was the best of all the places we ate. We had a couple of great cocktails to start and the food was impeccably prepared and presented. We decided to share the 5 dishes we ordered and all but one was superlative. We were a little disappointed in the "special" spaghetti with Lobster. Despite that, I would give Nico O my highest rating."

  • "I met a friend for an early dinner. We had the delicious crudo black sea bream appetizer and the grilled octopus bruschetta. The sea bream was exquisitely prepared and was delicate and intricate. The octopus was bold, complex, and wonderful. The fruits di mare frito misto was a very large dish -- enough for 3-4 to share as an appetizer. It was well executed with crispy fish, scallops, razor clams, and other delights. We looked at the dining room -- it seemed a bit cafeteria-like in its setup so decided to eat outside. My only complaint was our server, though competent and knowledgeable, was extremely inattentive. It wasn't crowded and there were plenty of other service staff just standing around in the outdoor eating area."

  • "It's a great spot, great wine list, great food. The service, from the forgetful hostess to the discombobulated server, leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe they are just understaffed outside. Lots of errors are made and we observed a lot of frustration amongst fellow diners. It was a great day, however, and we were in no hurry and just went with it. Hated to leave a poor tip, but the service just was not good here."

  • "Visiting Chicago, found this terrific restaurant on Open Table. Located on Rush Street, near the Viagra Triangle, these few blocks are bustling with activity. We were seated near the bar, the table arrangements not unlike those found in a Paris restaurant: long, linear arrangement, close to adjacent tables, with positioning of your dinner partner across from you. Some may not like this arrangement, but I thought it just added to the ambience. High energy place! We were dressed up for the eve, but dressy casual is ok. Fare is creative seafood, but NOT typical of American Italian. We had a bruschetta antipasto, salmon and pasta: just outstanding!! Service was quick and attentive throughout the evening. I would definitely recommend!"

  • "Really! The menu was so promising but when asked about the various items our server could not tell us much, & had to go ask about the preparation of many menu items. (I realize they may change their menu, but "foodie" focused restaurant I would expect the server to be better prepared.) Shared the Cobb, it was lovely. But when our sandwiches arrived one was wrong, and they scrambled to bring the correct one which arrived on obviously burnt bread with half the amount of fries as the other 2 sandwiches (delivered by the maitre d', I would not have expected him to serve it to a guest.) Not sure how to end this review since I was just plain disappointed having eaten at other Paul Kahan places I expected so much more."

  • "No ambience. Horrible table- great waitress. Food was okay but was ushered to worst table in house despite reserving weeks in advance. Pass on this place. Will never be back. Only saving grace was the attentive waitress."

  • "Beef tongue bruschetta delicious but very fatty. Portions uneven - some antipasta too big, pasta perfect for two. Panna cotta and hazelnut gelato very good. Service attentive and friendly but, pet peeve, please don't ask me "are you still working on that.""

  • "Everything from the setting, service and most of all, food are outstanding. This restaurant deserves every rave review it has received. Each plate is beautifully presented and tastes even better. Unusual combinations of flavors that all work to create a unique meal. From Baby hamachi to a simple heirloom tomato made unique with a bagna cauda and crostini and a lemon cake with pickled blueberries not to mention a smoked whitefish pasta that melted in your mouth, it was a diner's heaven! Can't wait to go back!"

  • "While the food was very good, I was very disappointed with the service. Both our server in the salon and our waitress were disinterested and not quite the type of person I expected for a place with your reputation. There was a real disconnect."

  • "My husband and I went to Nico for his birthday. We had a 9pm reservation and reached there at 8:59pm. The lady at the front told us to make our way to the bar, because our table wasn't ready yet. Got to the bar and waited about 15 minutes for a drink. Around 9:30pm, we were seating at our table. Our waiter seemed nice and knowledgable of the menu. All in all, our food was extremely mediocre. Our service ending up being below average. Our waiter never asked us if we wanted anything else to drink and sat most of dinner with empty wine glasses. We ended up turning to our bus boy to get our drinks and bill. All in all I really did not enjoy and aspect of this restaurant- and am sad to say that because I love all Thompson Hotel restaurants."

  • "Creative. Complex. Flavorful. Great service. Wife and I had 6 savory items that we shared and did not order the main course. Two cold, 1 pasta, and three hot. Would order every single one again in a heartbeat. Great wine from Crete. Only disappointment was the dessert. Not bad. Just OK. After the brilliance of the first two hours with the savory, it was a let down. But that will not deter us from returning within a month."

  • "I was disappointed by how close together the tables are - it was incredibly difficult not to eavesdrop on your neighbors and impossible to slip between tables. Ask for a booth. All of our starters were divine: oysters, Baccala mantecato, and la quercia prosciutto were spectacular. But our two main pasta dishes disappointed: squid ink conchilie and the sardinian style seafood. While the flavor combinations were good, the pasta was gummy and the conchilie sauce was overpowering. Disappointing since the pasta is supposed to be fresh and homemade. My SO had the Nico Torte for dessert and was RAVING - and still thinking about it the next day! I would definitely go back, but I think I'd just order all starters!"

  • "Not just the best restaurant in the Rush Street area, this place I think seems to actually aspire to greatness. And right now they are achieving it. The freshest fish, unique and delicious preparations of salads, small and larger plates and even sides. And one of the very best, if not the best Pastry Chef and desserts in Chicago. I have been here 3 times and each time I have been blown away by the quality and taste of every item."

  • "We had to wait 30 minutes to be seated, which now seems to be standard practice in the restaurant business. It's a totally obvious and unethical way of pushing up profit margins by encouraging guests to buy $25 worth of drinks that they don't really want. The tables were too close together as well, which means I had to listen to my neighbors' conversations for the duration of my meal (and they had to listen to mine). While the food was good, it was not worth the aggravation of the wait and the cramped space. Thumbs down."

  • "Went for brunch on a Saturday and was able to sit outside. Great location and service but the food left a little more to be desired. Given the seafood specialty, we had the oysters as a starter. Extremely salty and below average. Was expecting much more. Also ordered the carbonara which was pretty good. Went in with high expectations which weren't met."

  • "We had lunch at Nico Osteria(on July 4th) so that it might not be a typical day. Everything about it was superb. The food was fresh, well prepared, interesting and delicious. The service was perfect. Waiter, Andre, was terrific, friendly, had good suggestions and you could tell he was very happy to work there. The room was quiet..we chose to eat inside, but the out door tables were quite busy. The space is understated and very comfortable. We will return often!"

  • "This was my return visit. Food was excellent as it was the previous time. Service was spotty and we had to ask for things like clean cutlery several times, and had to stop them from taking away dishes and drinks before we were finished. Maybe a bad day with reduced staff right before the July 4th holiday."

  • "Make no mistake; Nico is not Spiaggia 1.0 or anything like it. What it is then is a very good osteria-style Italian restaurant. It does not remind one of being in Italia until you taste the food. Authentic if not unique Italian stylings: antipasti, salade, pecse, pasta etc. and so one. While the emphasis is seafood, there are choices which make this menu pretty flexible for all different diners. The highly touted lobster spaghetti was probably worth the $48 mp considering the size of the whole Maine lobster used. The black ink pasta was every bit as tasty, and at about half the cost. The bar looks like a great place to meet and greet, and sample from small plates. Next time."

  • "gorgeous interior and beautiful design. food was very good, tables a bit tight as there is a lot of activity. Only complaint was that we arrived early to sit at the bar and catch up/have drinks - and when we arrived we checked in but told the hostess we had come early for a drink. Three times they came to us and tried to seat us early. it was annoying ."

  • "the excellent food was delicious with distinct harmonious and subtle flavors. we shared the hamachi to start and progressed to the crab salad with fava puree base - (my personal favorite from the meal) an finished with the salmon with tarragon sauce. every dish had fabulous flavors and sophisticated blending. This meal made me miss my favorite restaurant in Milan. I rated the service slightly lower for 2 reasons - poor seating selection initially (we were reseated graciously) and neglect to receive the house bread. At the table our server was knowledgeable and friendly and made the dining experience overall a true pleasure."

  • "We made reservations here a month in advance AND it was recommended by our Concierge. Great appetizer with shredded Brussels sprouts in grilled and herbed bread. Spaghetti with lobster was atrocious. Mushy, old, bad red sauce. We sent the whole plate back bc we could not even chew it. Then we were served the (three)!) veal meatballs. Looked great but alas, they were too soft and when we looked inside one, raw snd bad smelling. Server was in attentive and not helpful. Schmoozing with the other tables but never approached our table. Finslly, Zach the manger came and explained thst they're meant to be that way bc of a "secret" recipe. What?? He didn't want us to pay for anything and we left hungry and miserable."

  • "Had a 9pm reservation for dinner with a friend visiting from Singapore for 40th birthday - requested a nice table but were seated at the last table by the kitchen felt like everyone was walking over us - requested a table elsewhere but were told those were for larger parties therefore we sat outside but it was a cold night - so we ended up leaving right after dinner because we were freezing. Food was expensive and nothing special and the service was poor. Would not go back there."

  • "I have been anxiously waiting to try this place for a while and it lived up to all my expectations. Just be aware, it is a very popular new"er" spot and we were unable to get a more traditional dinner reservation between 6:30-8:30 any day of the week for weeks, so we ended up settling for a 9:00 reservation to get in sooner. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful delivering a bottle of wine similar to the one we requested that was sold out, giving helpgul tips on the menu and checking in regularly. The food was outstanding. Never have I tasted a dish that was nearly as good as my grandma's Christmas fish gravy spaghetti but the lobster spaghetti was damn close. Just the smell brought me back... kudos. We'll be back for more."
