A word from MUD HEN TAVERN
MUD HEN TAVERN's food, drinks and inviting atmosphere offers an affordable dining experience for the area. Susan and Executive Chef and Partner Kajsa Alger will be preparing a wide variety of rustic dishes and bar food, with the occasional global inflections that these beloved chefs naturally bring to the table. The bar team, led by Morgan Fox (Upstairs II, Pourtal Wine Bar), alongside mixology consultant Tricia Carr (formerly Alley), have curated a beverage program that offers a vibrant and accessible selection of international wines, local craft beers and artisanal cocktails that complement Mud Hen Tavern’s cuisine. The refurbished space includes plenty of booths and communal tables, as well as an expanded bar with a draft beer system, all in the front room to allow patrons to easily walk in for drinks or dinner. The outdoor patio offers a more relaxing atmosphere for reservations, larger groups and private events.

  • "We are foodie couple---now with a 10 month old baby--- so we are always looking for great, fun options which are also baby friendly. Everything was perfect at this little gem of a spot!!! They even bring out a little kids plate with fresh fruit and veggies. If you are looking for a hip, friendly gastropub with delicious food then this should be your spot!"

  • "My husband and I had the hummus, fish and chips, Brussel sprouts and kale and the beef brisket. Delicious. Our server was an entertaining fellow whose passions.are food drink and writing. We wished we lived closer although if we are in the area again, we will certainly make a return visit."

  • "Susan F. does it again with this fun, lovely, delicious place. I can't wait t go back. There is something wonderful for even the pickiest eater here. Especially good: The fish and chips, the lamb meatballs, and the Kaya toast, oh yum!"

  • "I was a huge Street fan and Mud Hen as well does not dissapoint! YUMMY and will definitely be back!"

  • "Though longtime fan and follower of the chef-owner, dating back to City days, we won't go back. Food was eh at best. Veggie burger was a bean paddy - with no flavor and undercooked. Kale and brussell sprouts salad would have been much better chilled. The artichoke was good, but so what. Just nothing special or worth the money here. By comparison, Black Market in Studio City does this type of tavern tapas much better."

  • "Susan visited our table not once but twice to see how our experience was and to wish our birthday girl a happy birthday! We felt warmly welcomed and accommodated! Good options for one of our gluten free friends as well."

  • "We came to celebrate a birthday and totally enjoyed the "Whiskey and Sliders" tasting menu."

  • "It is a bit expensive for the quality of food and drinks. Do not expect it to look very clean (although chemically it might be clean), especially the bathrooms. However the food was mediocre and the service was great. I kind of liked the decorations and atmosphere, especially the outdoor dining portion. Do not expect a menu with much variety. Maybe they could use a cook to recommend some more options."

  • "Service and ambiance were great... We sat on the covered patio which was a nice setting... Food was good, not great... Highlights were the chicken and waffle croquettes and the late harvest corn."

  • "This was my first visit to Mud Hen Tavern and had visited this restaurant in its previous life known as Street. Loved both. The food was good but portions were on the smaller side, that's probably because I'm so accustomed to many LA restaurants providing large portions of food. The chicken and waffle croquettes were tasty and the bread pudding dessert was fantastic. The atmosphere and energy are great. The wait staff and management are super friendly."

  • "We went here for dinner when we had an unexpected night off. Service was great and attentive. Place was very busy and things were slow at times, but what made up for it was a warmth and personality from the environment and staff which most places in LA lack. The owner is clearly a part of daily operation and was walking around greeting guests and bussing tables which made it very clear where this energy came from. She is obviously grateful for the business, loves what she does, and this trickles down to her staff. It's a refreshing experience."

  • "My wife and I loved Street, so we were excited to try out Susan's new restaurant that replaced it - Mud Hen Tavern… and we were not disappointed in the least. Everything was delicious. We started with one of my old faves from Street that has been carried over, the Kaya Toast (coconut jam and soy sauce with a soft fried egg on toast - WOW). My favorite small plate was the tuna ceviche, which had a unique twist and exceptional flavors with the tangerine, chipotle, and toasted corn. The pierogi and corn dishes were also both fantastic, as were the fish & chips and the brisket. Drinks were also superb. Needless to say , we can't wait to go back soon and try some more dishes!!"

  • "Finally a restaurant in my neighborhood that is dedicated to those that may want to drink as much as they want to eat. This neighborhood has many great chefs battling it out for attention, but Mud Hen Tavern is clearly the winner if you are looking for a bar to get a drink. Excellent craft beer selection and top shelf friendly pours. So after dining heavy at Mozza, Trois Mec or Hatfield's you can walk it off by heading over to Mud Hen for desert, a night cap, or a few more beers with the locals."

  • "We had reservations at 6:30pm and arrived to find out they were probably going to be 30 minutes behind. I was pretty annoyed - the hostesses didn't seem to be on the ball at all. However, it ended up being for the best because we decided to eat at the bar. The bartenders, especially Sam, Diego and Jen, were all incredible. Great drinks, great attitudes and more than happy to take our dinner orders on top of drink orders. We are piggies, so we had the deviled eggs, meatballs, fries, croquettes, corn and bread pudding. Everything tasted incredible, came out fast and was hot. We will definitely be back."

  • "Best item: Chicken & Waffle Croquettes Lamb Meetballs were fine but common Greatest Disappointment: Kaya Toast...loved them at Street but the presentation changed and the toast was so hard it couldn't be cut Green Eggs & Ham had bacon bits so hard it almost broke our teath Brisket was good but we were in a bad mood by this point Finally the Cinnimon Roll Bread Pudding was simply aweful. It had to be been prepared incorrectly. It's impossible that it was supposed to take like pure alcohol"

  • "The lamb meatballs were nestled in a yogurt sauce with puddles of grease run-off. They lacked flavor we. The shaved kale and brussels sprouts tasted like boiled cabbage and looked like leftovers. The Californian Pizza did not appear to actually have blue cheese and lacked seasoning. The wild arugula topping was covered in olive oil. The whole pizza appeared to be drizzled in oil, on top of the oily residue of the cheese. We were very disappointed in our meal, and decided to call it quits before it took a turn for the worse."

  • "I came here for Valentine's day with my girlfriend and I don't regret a thing. The food was great and the waitress that attended us was super friendly. Since my girlfriend knew the chef, she came over to our table and even recommended me some things to eat since it was my first time there. She even sent over some oysters on the house. I loved the food and honestly would consider making it a regular place to go."

  • "Aside from the wait (we had reservations), customer service and food were both excellent. I had the Kaya Toast (of course!) and the Spicy Black Bean Burger while my husband had the Tuna Ceviche and Hangover Burger. All delicious! The woman who waited on us was very attentive, she checked on us every 10 minutes or something. Great customer service indeed. We went to Street at least twice a month and loved it. We miss all of the different types of food offering that Street's menu had. Mud Hen Tavern had a great food, but the menu is similar to any other restaurant in it's category. I'm not a drinker, but I'm sure their wide selection of alcohol is good also."

  • "Loved Mud Hen Tavern. We were there for Valentine's Day and had the special menu plus the Brussels sprout and kale dish mentioned often in these reviews (it is awesome). Kajsa and Susan have created delicious and surprising food. All the favors are tasty on their own but together, they sing. A mark of a great chef. Our servers made us feel welcome and cared for. It was great fun to see Kajsa and Susan walking through the restaurant and when we bought the "Street" cookbook our server asked if we would like it signed. Both Susan and Kajsa came to our table and spoke with us and sign our book. They were incredibly nice. So, great good, great atmosphere and I got to meet one of my favorite chefs. We'll be back."

  • "I went to Mud Hen on Valentines day and mostly selected from their V day menu, so I'm not sure how fair it is to review the food as their standard menu is probably their better dishes. I was not overly impressed with the food. Maybe I was hyped up on other people raving about it. Its good, don't get me wrong. I did have a really nice time, but for the price of the meal I was definitely underwhelmed. The ambience is great. The service is good. I would definitely go back but go for the more standard fair. Maybe I'll like it better. Overall too expensive for the food it delivers. If it was more moderately priced I'd be way more into it."

  • "I just posted this on yelp: Unbelievably bad. No silverware or water our first fifteen minutes there. Every item asked for: salt, pepper, ketchup never showed up. The Fried Chicken salad never arrived. When we asked where it was, not only did they not know, but they said, "oh, it's fried pork belly tonight." You'd think our waiter would've mentioned a change on the main ingredient... Chicken and waffle balls: deep fried dough having nothing to do with waffles drowned in maple sauce. You wouldn't want this at a fast food joint, much less here. Burger: so-so. Meat solid, overwhelmed by bun. Lemon dessert: Terrible presentation, and grainy, amateur lemon custard. Do they not know how to strain this for smoother consistency?"

  • "Extremely limited selection is on Happy Hour from a celebrity chef I expected more. It's literally fries, onion rings, a cheese pizza, ceviche and meatballs. It's a relatively new spot so the service it's very good as the wait staff learns the ropes. Our waitress spilled wine on our pizza and didn't offer to replace it. We had to ask for a replacement pizza to be brought to the table. Nice remodel of the former Street location but other than that I can't say i'll be back. Too bad. Check out Border Grill instead."

  • "Really enjoyed dinner at Mud Hen Tavern. Some favorites from when the spot was "Street" remain on the menu (including Kaya Toast), but there are many new treats that seem inspired by American comfort food. Everything we ordered was extremely tasty. Very attentive and friendly service."

  • "Service was great. Ambience was nice. Food was good. Out of the 4 dishes I tried, I would suggest two: the brussel sprouts and the harvest corn. The burger was not as good as I was expecting-there was a strange flavor on it that I couldn't place and didn't really like and the cinnamon bun bread pudding was not worth the calories, it was kinda dry and not amazing like it sounds."

  • "This place was great! The food and service were both top notch. From the moment I walked in the service was wonderful. The Hostess, bartenders, and the wait staff were all amazing, attentive, informative and just plain nice!"

  • "I LOVED Susan's Feniger's latest venture, Mud Hen Tavern. Really creative, innovative yet totally tasty dishes, flavorful, lots of small bite plates on the menu so you could sample alot. And the cocktails were great! Particularly loved the tostada, tuna ceviche, spinach and potato pierogi and the brussel sprouts and kale. Complete with a relaxed, fun atmosphere means I plan on coming back again and again. Go Susan!"

  • "We were a party of 4 with reservations at 6:45. Two of the party discovered this place during 2013 Dine LA and went back after the remodel. Both times were a great experience. The place is trendy, energitic, crowded and the service is impeccable - you can tell the staff is hand picked and trained very well. The food? Excellent, different, light and SO tasty. A must go, I know we will again."

  • "I loved the ambience and warmth of this new bar. Used to be STREET, now its a warm, inviting neighborhood tavern - fabulous food items, and a terrific menu! Especially the DineLA menu! I'm definitely going back, and I will refer to all our guests looking for a nice bar with good food!"

  • "The food here is excellent and the service is great. The restaurant is nice enough for a date night and relaxed enough for an everyday casual place to go. Susan Feniger is an amazing chef and a true genius if she came up with Kaya Toast. You have to try it! Lamb meatballs and Chicken and Waffle croquettes are home runs."

  • "This is a gastronomical experience that I could enjoy regularly. A couple of places as exquisite as this eatery that I have gone to have compromised portions for taste. Here you get delectable dishes that are healthy sized at decent prices!"

  • "I loved this placed when it was "Street," and love it more now. The space is, or seems, less crowded and the noise more manageable. The food remains just terrific. I hate both brussels sprouts and kale, but there is a dish with both here that is a reason in itself to come back. Food here is wonderfully flavorful, aromatic and imaginative without being weird, precious or over-the-top."
