A word from Mother Anna's
Four Generations of Fine Italian Cuisine! Boston’s historic North End is known for its many Italian restaurants. Over the last 80 years, many of these establishments have come and gone. None have stood the test of time quite like Mother Anna’s. Established in 1932, Mother Anna’s has passed through four generations of families. John Caparella, along with his three sons, have carried on the tradition that his grandmother started 79 years ago.

The last 20 years have brought on many changes in the North End. The number of restaurants have gone from the single digits, back in the early days, to close to a hundred. Also, the old Central Artery that had divided the North End for so many years, has since disappeared.

Mother Anna’s has now become the gateway to the North End. On a beautiful summer night, a table on the now famous patio gives customers a view of the Boston skyline that can only be experienced at Mother Anna’s. Mother Anna’s should not be missed!

We took our 14year old and some of her friends here for her birthday on a Saturday night because they take reservations and the price point is reasonable. The girls split an alfredo, gnocci and baked ziti (no salad or veg comes on side) and thought they were fine. The chicken parm is a big flat piece of chicken with red sauce on top. No side, no cheese. The bread is stale and comes with rock hard butter. The garden salad was awful and drowned in dressing. Okay for a low budget quick pasta meal. Wouldn't go on a date or bring any foodie here. Needs to be vacuumed and the menu/service updated. Our waitress did try and had a pleasant attitude.

We were looking for authentic Italian food. The eggplant rollatini was esquisite. The red sauce was exactly what I was looking for. I wish I ordered an entrée portion. We also had the veal Cacciatore which was very good. Our 1pm reservation was great because it wasn't crowded, and our server was very attentive. I love the owner. When I told him I loved the red sauce, he said "I made it this morning!" with a huge smile on his face. My friend couldn't stop talking about it. We will definitely return on our next visit to Boston. Mother Anna's reminded me of Vanessi's in SF which has closed all locations.

This is an older North End restaurant that has a very traditional menu, just a handful of unique dishes, with reasonable prices and very ample portions. We had a group of 9 on Tues night, it was not very crowded, and that likely helped us get tremendous service. The calamari and eggplant rolatini appetizers were very fresh and delicious. Everyone in the group agreed their entrees were very good; this was a group of men that would rarely leave anything on their plates and several of us were unable to eat it all! If you are looking for a "foodie" experience, there are many better alternatives (with prices to match); for good old fashioned Italian food that will leave everyone full and happy, you won't be disappointed.

A very pleasant eating experience on the patio. Waitress was warm friendly and attentive to our needs and did a great job serving us from start to finish. Food was good and plentiful. Had not been to Mother Anna's in years but was glad that we returned. Would highly recommend. The combination of service, quality of food and price made for a wonderful evening.

We were looking forward to trying Anna's, and have tried about 10 other restaurants in the neighborhood. We liked the simple way the menu was organized. We ordered the Antipasto, which we would not recommend. it was basically a salad, with very little meat and cheese. There was also tuna which was un-delicious, and canned marinated green beans, which were not appetizing. In addition to this we had a little salad instead of pasta with our meal, so the antipasto was basically pointless since we had most of the same ingredients in our salad (including the not-nice green beans). We would have appreciated the server letting us know. Our entrees were good - but does not compete with most of the other restaurants we've tried in the North End.

We sat outside on a beautiful, bustling Saturday night. We had a 7:30 reservation and were not seated until after 8, but the hostess was lovely to us. Service was excellent. Ceaser salads and portabello appetizers were excellent. Entrees rec'd mixed reviews. The pasta special was excellent, those ordering various chicken and veal dishes were less than thrilled. One other minor complaint - despite being outdoor dining, it would have been nice to have better gauge silverware - we hate flimsy light cheap forks and knives. And, bread served was poor - basic, tasteless white Italian. Overall, great scene and service, and reasonable pricing, but order the specials!

I have been to the North End in Boston many times and I have seen Mother Anns all the time because of its location. I have alway wanted to try it, I was disappointed. The outdoor dinning was good, but very noisy due to a lot of traffic. The outdoor dining located at Atlantic ave not as quaint as Hanover Street. Outside was OK, but the food is what I was sad about. You see, I really wanted to like this place. I had the chicken parm. It was large but it was soaked in oil and grease. The sauce was good and there was real mozzarella on it. I just wanted it to be better. My wife had chicken Marcella. Again it was drowning I oil and grease. The taste was ok, but way too much grease. Overall. There are better places to eat in the N end.

Food was great, service was great. Our food was served hot and very quickly. We had a bunch of appetizers and then we ordered four or five main dishes and shared them. Everything was delicious. There were ten of us and we ate outside and it was a beautiful day in Boston. The only negative comment is that the restrooms are hard to get to from outside.

I returned to eat here based upon my excellent lunch here last summer. We ate on their patio on Saturday night, and I must say we were both disappointed. I had the Gnocchi Julianna again and this time all the seafood was put on the side of the dish as an afterthought, and all of it was very overcooked, tough, and did not taste fresh whatsoever...a significant departure from my experience last year. My fiance ordered the lobster ravioli and specifically asked for a very small amount of sauce...it was the regular serving with a generous quantity of sauce. My fiance pointed this out to the waitress who did not offer to redo the dish. I'd try something other than seafood here, because it didn't taste fresh and wasn't prepared very well.

Went to Mother Anna's for an Anniversary dinner on a Saturday night. They were very busy and the street level dinning area was packed . We sat in the lower level dinning room it was very nice and quieter than the upper room. The server was excellent and the food was delicious as well. The sever catered to our every need. It was an great night out. We have been here many times and we have always had wonderful food and service . I strongly recommend Mother Anna's for any occasion.

B prepare to hear "whys and whys if you do not like your entree at this restaurant! Our wait person are not train to handle "customer rights " She did not come back to her concern and we had to share our entree with our poor friend. When we were almost done with the dinner, she came back to her id he wants to pick something else. When the bill came, we rewust the charge to be remove and instead we get an earful from the the manager. After my friend made her case with him, he made an unfriend decision to remove that charge. Restaurant are there to welcome others to their culture and food! Not so sure at this restaurant!

Nobody in our party of six was satisfied with the food. The veal was very salty. Two people had eggplant, and both sent it back after one bite. Even the bread was lousy. The first Italian restaurant I've seen where they never heard of olive oil dipping sauce. The waitress was very nice, and they replaced the eggplant with another choice. The reservation was screwed up as well. We had made a reservation for six, they had us as being two. I checked the Open Table response, which confirmed the six. We were however able to be seated.

Great location but disappointing service and food. We ordered chicken parm (soggy) and red sauce tasteless, antipasto salad (they added tuna, canned green beans, canned artichokes, canned olives and dressing was watered down creamy italian dressing). They need to train the wait staff to be more attentive or give servers less stations to handle at once. There are so many other great options on the North End and this would not be on my list to return.

Mother Anna's was one of my favorite North End restaurants. Unfortunately it is in major need of updating. Service is below average and food quality has fallen. I think, with the addition of the patio, they rely on more of the tourist flow rather than repeat business.

Mother Anna's is spitting distance from many much better Italian restaurants in the North End of Boston. The restaurant is dingy and tired. Even worse, we were stuck in what was basically a corridor off to the side of the main dining area. The service was fast, friendly and efficient but the food was average at best. The menu is standard traditional Italian fare with no originality. The starters - calamari and peppers with mozzarella - were good but nothing special. The Gnocchi seafood main course was a mess. The Gnocchi was doughy and the seafood was overcooked. The veal wasn't bad but I never found the promised prosciutto. The wine list is limited, but the Chianti we had was quite good. We headed off to Mike's for dessert.
