A word from Mother Anna's
Four Generations of Fine Italian Cuisine! Boston’s historic North End is known for its many Italian restaurants. Over the last 80 years, many of these establishments have come and gone. None have stood the test of time quite like Mother Anna’s. Established in 1932, Mother Anna’s has passed through four generations of families. John Caparella, along with his three sons, have carried on the tradition that his grandmother started 79 years ago.

The last 20 years have brought on many changes in the North End. The number of restaurants have gone from the single digits, back in the early days, to close to a hundred. Also, the old Central Artery that had divided the North End for so many years, has since disappeared.

Mother Anna’s has now become the gateway to the North End. On a beautiful summer night, a table on the now famous patio gives customers a view of the Boston skyline that can only be experienced at Mother Anna’s. Mother Anna’s should not be missed!

  • "We went to Mother Anna's for lunch as a party of 5. Had great service. The portions are large and a good value. The Red Sauce on the pasta a and my Chicken Parm was fantastic. Very flavorful."

  • "Mother Anna's is spitting distance from many much better Italian restaurants in the North End of Boston. The restaurant is dingy and tired. Even worse, we were stuck in what was basically a corridor off to the side of the main dining area. The service was fast, friendly and efficient but the food was average at best. The menu is standard traditional Italian fare with no originality. The starters - calamari and peppers with mozzarella - were good but nothing special. The Gnocchi seafood main course was a mess. The Gnocchi was doughy and the seafood was overcooked. The veal wasn't bad but I never found the promised prosciutto. The wine list is limited, but the Chianti we had was quite good. We headed off to Mike's for dessert."

  • "We had outside dining which would have been nice we're it not for the sun directly in our eyes or on our backs the whole time...the server seemed distracted the entire time. Food was okay but nothing special..."

  • "We bagan with an appetizer of Rolled Eggpplant filled with ricotta cheese...absolutely delicious....and the sauce is amazing...next was an antipasto....again, very authentic...like grandma used to make....we asked for a little twist on their traditional Lemondrop cocktail...it was perfect...for dinner we had tortellini with meat sauce and the seafood gnocchi....pasta was perfect and again the sauces were creative and delicious...I must make a special mention of the "Sweet" sauce on the gnocchi...service was friendly and timely...a definite return!"

  • "Found this restaurant by accident and wow! What a find. Arrived with a party of 6. The food was outstanding. Pasta was fresh, meals were exquisitely prepared and came out fast and piping hot. Our waitress was terrific! From her bubbly personality to here superior attentiveness. Even the bus staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive. Went on a Saturday night when Italy was playing England in a world Cup soccer match which only added to the boisterous atmosphere. My new favorite restaurant in Boston!"

  • "I left Boston for a job in Atlanta Ga 18 years ago. then I had to move to Hartford CT, then down to the New haven CT area. this past weekend, I finally get a chance to come to Boston and of course I had to enjoy some awesome Italian cuisine (Atlanta didn't have it, Hartford didn't have it, New haven...wellllll...meh.) So it occurs to me to visit my favorite place again... Mother Anna's! Wait! could it still be there? Lo and Behold! indeed! Everything was as delicious as it ever was. The waitstaff was accommodating, and the service was solid and friendly. Well done Mother Anna's! I missed you."

  • "We made reservations through Open Table for 7:30. The 4 of us arrived on the dot of 7:30 and we were promptly greeted and taken to our table. The waiter was great- very attentive and so was all the other staff. If one was to see a finished salad plate even if it was not their job they took care of it. Great team work. Now the food you couldn't ask for better- Veal and eggplant parm so tender with nice light red sauce. My wife and sister in-law got the special " Baked lightly breaded chicken covered with eggplant, prosciutto and cheese in a light white wine sauce. They were amazed how good it was. We love the North end and Mother Anna's has long been one of our favorites. By the way it was a Sat. evening and we never felt rushed."

  • "I have been going to Mother Anna's since I was a kid. Now I live out of state, and whenever we travel back to Boston, we always try to make it to Mother Anna's for dinner. It's such a special place to me, and now to my husband. "

  • "My wife and I were in Boston to visit with longtime friends and soak up a bit of history. We had been directed to Mother Anna's by a Ph.D student at Boston college and we were delighted with the dining experience. It is a lot easier to get to the North End since the big dig. The neighborhood looks a lot moor attractive. "

  • "We visited Mother Anna's for a post graduation celebration. We were a party of 6 and were packed into a table that half the party needed to enter through a different door because it cut directly across the width of the small side room. On our way to the side room, we passed an empty table that could have easily accommodated our party. We found the restaurant loud, service was slow and the arrangement of the table made the food difficult to deliver. The veal dish was supposed to have marsala wine but it was super sweet almost tasting of maple syrup. Cheese on another veal dish was overcooked and tough. It was a disappointing because the occasion was supposed to be one of celebration."

  • "Restaurant and menu have not been updated in over 20 years. We were early for a reservation and they put in the basement which was dark, dingy, and gross. Roasted pepper and moz app, raviolio, meatball, eggplant, and seafood fra diavolo were all tasteless. "
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "The bread was stale. My side order of linguine was cold and my steak was swimming in a sea of grease and was oversalted. Those who ordered the baked ziti enjoyed it but the rest of the meals were rated only fair (lobster ravioli)."

  • "Been going here for 30 years and I'm only 53 years old. I love this place. Best veal marsala anywhere. Had dinner for 8. All meals were great. Service always good. Best Italian in the North End which means best in Boston."

  • "We came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, and even though the place was not full, our waitress seemed to be overwhelmed with work. Service was a bit slow, but nothing terrible. Food was ok. We ended up having a good time."

  • "nothing to complain about, nothing to rave about. one plus side is, it's just about the only Italian place in the north end that has actual outdoor dining. it was really busy since it was mother's day. servers were definitely understaffed but they were pleasant."

  • "Pros: 1. Good location on Hanover Street 2. Seated promptly 3. The side salad was crisp & tasty Cons: 1. EVERY dish tasted as if someone had opened a 5 pound box of salt and run amok In the kitchen 2. Minestrone way over salted and laced with corn starch. Consistency of pudding 3. Alfredo way over salted, sauce tasted out of a bad can 4. Veal parm was mystery meat or from a 12 year old calf..did I mention over salted 5. Shrimp scampi was tough as rubber and over salted 6. Cheese ravioli was bland, tasteless and over salted. 7.when waitress saw the 2/3 uneaten plates she asked how everything was and we told her, the response was a shrug and "so you're done?" This food is an embarrassment to the North !"

  • "In from out of town for a North End dinner and some exposure to the Quincy Market scene with teenagers. This was a perfect place to land for a reasonably priced authentic Italian dinner in the Boston's Italian district. Casual and comfortable with outstanding food priced at a level you won't find uncomfortable when paying the tab."

  • "7 years ago, my wife ran the Boston marathon. We had made reservations months before, but when we showed up they said they had no record. This was before open table etc. Anyway they served us by creating a table in the aisle on the main floor. However, the food was good and our kids, 7 & 9, didn't mind, so we thought we'd try it again on another visit. This year, 7 years later, we had an open table reservation, but again, we showed up & they had no record, however we showed a printed confirmation. This time they placed us at a make-shift table in their cold basement by the washrooms. My girls had to wear coats & they had to place cardboard under one of the table legs to balance it. We waited 25 minutes for our initial drinks. Never again. "

  • "Like most Italian places in Boston on the night before the marathon, Mother Anna's was very busy. We made our reservations about 6 weeks out and arrived about 10 minutes before our 6:30 reservation. We actualy were seated around 7 pm, but it was worth the wait. We were treated really well by Mother Anna's staff because of the wait. The food was fast, fresh and delicious. The gnocchi Juliana is amazing and the house salad dressing is unbelievably great. We will mark this as a Boston favorite - can't wait to go back to Mother Anna's next year..."

  • "Although short staffed, they a handled the crowd well. Pur waitress was running between the patio and indoor tables but she always stopped to make sure we were all set. Often, when overworked, staff is irritated and easily forgets tables, but she was phenomenal. Portions were a little small but the food was good. It was overall a very good experience. I would most definitely attend again."

  • "Competing with so many other Italian restaurants in the North End, this was our first time at this long standing establishment at the end of Hanover Street. It was a quiet Sunday night and at times it felt like we were the only customers. Service was friendly and for the most part quick. Food quality was good and serving size large, we ended up taking home almost 1/2 of what we were served. And those leftovers tasted just as good if not better when we re-heated them a couple of nights later. Prices were comparative to others ion the area."

  • "My wife and I have been to most of the restaurants in the North End over the past 30 years, but had never been to Mother Anna's. Frankly, it just didn't seem Italian enough, when contrasted with Lucca, Strega, L'Osteria, and Bricco, the NAME doesn't seem to fit! However, we were attending a concert and I wanted something on the far end of Hannover street and Mother Anna's is on the end, so I made reservations for 6. The food was surprisingly great! I had the sausage cacciatore and love it! Others order fairly standard fare: seafood fradiavlo, chicken and broccoli ziti, etc. All tasty. There seemed to be lots of room between tables compared to other places. The ambience was okay, not great -- kind of plain. I'll definitely go back!!"

  • "My wife and I went here for a Valentines day celebration. There was a loud group of slightly inebriated people when we first arrived, and the decorations in the "side-room" with a view of the street was a bit odd. However, the food was absolutely delicious: best fettuccine Alfredo I've had in a very long while. In general, we enjoyed our time there and would definitely recommend "Mother Anna's" as a fun place for a small group of family or friends."
