  • "An out-of-the-way historic building overlooking the coast-- nice spot to enjoy the views while having a mid-day bite or a relaxing dinner."

  • "We expected more elegant dining. It is more of a neighborhood joint with limited menu."

  • "We love this restaurant. we went there two nights in a row, cancelling our reservation we had at another restaurant. we really enjoy the whole experience. first night we sat at a window table enjoying the view and people (and dog) watching, the second night we sat outside. Awesome place, we love it!!!!"

  • "The food was amazing. Everyone in our party loved their food and that's saying something because people are picky. Each of us even ordered different items and all were fantastic and really big portions. The view of the cliffs and ocean surrounded by trees was so memorable. You could tell the food was fresh even the orange juice was fresh squezed! Only two small detractors; one - to me the coffee was not just strong but had a slight burnt taste, maybe it was just left on the burner too long and two - the bathrooms are two floors down. My Mom would barely be able to make it, though there is a wheelchair lift it's open and not a regular elevator."

  • "We had a very nice window view overlooking the ocean, and the seafood was very good."

  • "Service was mediocre. Sat at a table with dirty chairs. Waiter didn't even know about happy hour menu that is advertsied on their website, however, did agree to honor happy hour prices on drinks only (we dined in main dining room as opposed to bar area). When we received coffee at the end of our meal, were not offered cream and sugar. Once we asked for cream and sugar, we had to request teaspoons to mix. The restaurant was not overly crowded so it was not because they were busy. I think they just don't "think" about things."

  • "Wonderful food, but the quality of service from the host/hostess, to the bus boys to the servers is outstanding...consistently every time we go. The staff makes every creative attempt to accommodate every request."

  • "After reading an article on various restaurants that have menus specifically for dogs, we decided to try out Moss Beach Distillery. There is a special entrance located outside in the back of the restaurant for those who have brought their dogs. The view was spectacular - clear skies, the roar of the ocean. Bubba & Lucky, our 2 Bostons, "ordered" hamburger patties from their menu. We ordered fish & chips and a Turkey Club. The food was excellent. If you bring your dog, you need to order upstairs in the main dining area and then, when ready, you'll go back up to pick up the order; so, there really is no staff service. The menu prices were veryr easonable and a good time was had by all (especially Bubba & Lucky)."

  • "Great location and view, but the restaurant lacks that cared for feeling. From chipped paint, boxes left in the bar, old carpet, and heavy furniture, its as if they haven't really seen the restaurant since the 80's. The menu was dated, lots of fried shellfish but lacking in fresh, modern approach to seafood. The service was good, our waiter was very pleasant and helpful. After dinner we went downstairs to view the sunset on the patio. One firepit was out of order and the other had missing tiles. The wine pours are generous but not enough to make a return visit."

  • "Have been here in years. Great views of the ocean and great service. While entire choices seem a bit on thin side, all is good. Had the chicken saltin bocca. Real good. Would come again."

  • "Great views from indoor and amazing views on outdoor patio. Beautiful historic location with a cool ghost story. Great food, but overpriced. 2 dinners, 2 drinks with tip over $100."

  • "I am handicapped and the staff went out of their way to help me and make me feel welcome."

  • "We love coming back to this place, wish they had a bigger deck and more space with fire pits, but its still our favorite place to come to!"

  • "When I made the reservation, Sunday, Father's day was not available. Seeing they had Prime Rib on Friday as their special for $18.95. that was a find, and it was succulent, so tender and flavorful. will go back again. This is my second visit here. I came for lunch one day and now for dinner. We had the table with the view of the ocean and the setting sun. Magnificent...think we were there about 3 hours and there was no hassle about leaving. It is less than an hour's drive from the city. We took our own wine and paid a corking fee, great idea, we had good wines and the fee is reasonable. try this restaurant, you will love it. The service was superb, attentive to needs, and ever present when needed."

  • "The view is incredible. The perfect place to watch a sunset. Food was fair to good. Service was good although the server assistant needs some polishing up. Not fabulous food - kinda salty, average - nothing that stood out. I would go back there for dinner for the view only. Also the restaurant was alittle shabby and needs some cleaning and updating ie. tables, chairs and floors."

  • "The food and view were better than I had expected. The fish and chips and the calamari were not at all greasy - just tender pieces of fish in a light batter."

  • "We had a wonderful birthday celebration at MBD. Al the fun of its former speakeasy days, without the possibility of getting arrested. Seriously, great view and friendly staff. The outdoor patio is so wonderful with blankets and fire pits; you can even bring your dog for a view of the sunset."

  • "Enjoyed a birthday celebration for my wife with friends. Beautiful location with great ocean view. Waitress was very attentive and pleasant. Wait for food was a little long but we weren't in a hurry - particularly since we were enjoying bottomless Mimosas. It had been well over twenty years since our last visit but we will return sooner than this time. "

  • "We have been going to Moss Beach for years, but moved away so it's been a while. The menu seems more "pub-like" (= less expensive) than we recall, but crab cakes were awesome as were the fish tacos. You cannot beat the atmosphere. So few places in the Bay Area with such a spectacular ocean view. It's out of the way if you're in SF but such a lovely drive (through the newish Devil's Slide tunnel) and such a locally charming place. The patio with blankets and fire pits (and dog friendly) is also a lovely way to have drinks, or even some appetizers, with an awesome view and a bit more of the salt smell of the ocean. "

  • "Disappointed that the menu online did not match menu at restaurant. Surprised that a California restaurant, let alone a Bay Area eatery did not have a vegetarian selection. Our food was very good just not what we were hoping to have."

  • "I have been here many times with my family. I had a friend visiting from India , and I thought this might be the perfect spot to have lunch and enjoy the beautiful view it had to offer. And we were not disappointed at all. The service was excellent and the food was awesome. All in all a great afternoon."

  • "I treated my husband to dinner for his 65th birthday. It couldn't have been more perfect. We came on a thursday evening from Cupertino, over hwy92. Traffic was easy, and the weather sunny and just a bit cool. We were regaled with great food and service, but even better a non-stop flow of migrating whales during our entire two hour stay. With the huge picture windows we truly had front row seats to that amazing sight. MBD is now our permanent birthday venue. Thanks for the perfect gift! "

  • "Considering the limited menu and quality of the food, Sunday brunch at $35.00 per person was much too expensive. The best thing about the experience was the service."
    Dined on 4/27/2014
  • "The service at this restaurant is terrible! Unfriendly, impatient, and completely intolerant to kids. Our 3 kids are generally very well behaved in restaurants, with ages between 2 and 9. We had made an early reservation for our family, and when we arrived the room we were seated in was empty. Yet the waitress told our kids to be quiet, despite not bothering anyone! Then she kept pestering us every minute to take our order, with a disrespectful tone and manner. As parents, this is not a welcoming situation when you go out for dinner as a family. We left the place before we could finalize our order because it was too stressful and rude."

  • "Everyone that travels down the coast to Moss Beach Distillery is there for the view. We lucked out on Easter Sunday...no fog. I was with two others and we all had mimosas. I had the pulled pork rancheros and the folks with me had the California coastal omelet and coastal crab cake benedict. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. In a place like that you usually expect to overpay for the view. Finished the meal on the patio overlooking the ocean. "

  • "Went for dinner, was a bit nervous about the reviews not being favorable. Lucking the poor reviews were wrong. The food was great, window seat was amazing and the service was good. We had a very nice time, enjoyed our meal and had a wonderful time. "

  • "It's a nice scenic drive from San Francisco here; our first time with an out-of-town guest in the evening. The clam chowder is excellent, as are the beer battered onion rings. Watched the sun go down, and passed on dessert this time. Everyone's dinner entree were good, can't claim they were especially outstanding, but we did enjoy the experience."

  • "I was skeptical to go there because I thought it was too much of the ghost hype. We got an outstanding table with a phenomenal ocean view and the food was really good. I would be happy to go back and will tell people to give it a try."

  • "My wife and I usually spend a weekend near the ocean for our anniversary. Half Moon Bay is among our favorites. The Moss Beach Distillery is a short ride away on the ocean in a residential neighborhood. It reminds me of a roadside bar from years ago, which it was. The current owners have modernized it, but still keep some of the historical flavor. Looking out at the ocean while dining is always a plus, even when it's foggy and the Distillery has lots of large windows. The food options are varied and offer something for just about everyone."

  • "We stopped by on a foggy night with the kids; hadn't been here in years. The staff was really friendly, which was the only positive thing I have to say unfortunately. The menus was tired, fish choices were mostly battered. I had pasta primavera since I couldn't find anything else to eat. The veggies appeared fresh but the taste had been cooked out of them. The basil was added too early to the dish, so the flavor and color were cooked out. My husband had a tuna sandwich which he said was greasy. I can't remember what my kids ate; the kids menu wasn't that great. The decor was very, very tired. The carpet is fraying and is an outdated blue. It is sad what this place has become. We won't be back."
