A word from Monstera Noodles & Sushi
Monstera is a hip, casual, moderately priced restaurant providing great food, service, ambiance and value. We are more than a typical sushi restaurant--we have included menu items of Noodle Houses and Izakayas (Japanese Pubs of Japan) to offer you a selection of dishes never seen before on the Big Island. Our philosophy is smile in, smile out. We want you to feel welcome with our gracious local-style hospitality and enjoy great food at a great price in this beautiful location. We hope this will be a stopping point for those traveling along the coast or after visiting a nearby beach.

Named after a non-native, mysterious plant found in Hawaii, Monstera offers a wide selection of items, including sizzling platters and drinks in a casual, yet hip, atmosphere. Here, guests can sit in crocodile print booths under soft lighting and listen to familiar tunes or dine alfresco. Monstera is owned and operated by Big Island residents Norio Yamamoto and Wes Monty.

Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I went back 3 times during our stay in Hawaii. You cannot go wrong with an order of Edamame, the Chuck Norris Roll, Yaki Soba, and, of course, the Original Mai Tai."

  • "Great every time. Good service great food quality blows any other Japanese food in the area out of the water. It's affordable for the quality."

  • "This was our second time at Monstera in a week. We would eat there every night if we could! The food is amazing. We asked our server if there was any possibility of Monstera opening a branch in the San Francisco Bay Area! Our favorite dishes are the Chuck Norris roll and the Tempura with Udon noodles & broth."

  • "We're going back to the restaurant for another wonderful meal tomorrow. The food is always very fresh, perfectly prepared and beautifully plated. I wish we had a Monstera near our home in the San Francisco Bay Area!"

  • "Food is always really good. The restaurant was very busy that the kitchen was slammed. Not enough wait staff. In light of the way the restaurant was slammed, the two waiters did well. The spicy ahi salad was excellent ."

  • "I visit Monstera at least twice while vacationing on the Big Island. The fish is always fantastic and love the fresh flavors."

  • "Monstera is one of our favorites on the Big Island. The fish is sustainable, local and fresh and the vegetables are also local. The dishes are creative and beautifully presented. The Tuna Tataki is out of this world. So is the Volcano roll and Rainbow roll. The wine is very reasonably priced. The Original MaiTai is perfect as it is not to sweet - made the traditional way. Delicious! The service is friendly, professional and helpful."

  • "Surprisingly tasty Japanese cuisine in a shopping center setting. The seating is a little erratic, but once at your table, you're good to go."

  • "We tried several sushi places on the big island on our honeymoon, and this was one of them. Kitchen was slow and the server was really nice and accommodating, but stretched too thin. The kitchen was kind of slow for how uncrowded the place seemed but it looked like there might have been two chefs back there working for the whole place. Honestly, great effort, but it fell short in the end."

  • "The servers were friendly, but the the timing was off. We were a table of 2. A table of 4 next to us sat down and ordered after us, but they received their food first. We also received their appetizer in error which as it turned out showed up after their entrees. The sushi was good quality and well prepared."

  • "As a "sushi" snob, I'm very picky when it comes to quality...Monstera selection of and dishes were some of the finest we've ever had. We enjoyed it so much, we dined there two times. Their warm entrees are also superb! Friendly staff, excellent high quality food...What more could you ask for? I would definitely give Monstera a try when visiting the beautiful island of Hawaii!"

  • "We have just returned from our annual two-week vacation, staying at a Mauna Lani condo. In that time, we ate four (!) dinners at Monstera! We love the food, the menu and the staff. We tried quite a variety of items on the menu, including specials. We found everything to be reliably first-rate!"

  • "Lots of choices. Glad we had help from our server. Food did come a little too fast and I'd ask them to slow it down next time."

  • "Between a commercial fisherman in Alaska and a couple from the Texas gulf coast, we really enjoy fresh fish. This has been the best dining experience we have had on the island. We tried the poke at every restaurant we went to on the island, and we all agreed this was the best! The staff was very kind, and we had very fast service. We tried a variety of foods, and the only thing we would change was the fried poke on the poke three ways plate. We all liked it, but agreed it was a waste of a perfect fish to fry it. Kayla was the best waitress. She really made our dining experience great. Thank you!"

  • "When you are the big island's number one Sushi Bar and Japanese Grill you'd think things might slip over time? This solid and delightful place seems to just get better every time. Clearly the BEST and most delicious sushi I've ever had. The Tuna Tataki is a signature dish that is--hands down--the best appetizer I have ever had. Can't tell you enough how much you will thoroughly enjoy Chef Norio and his team's amazing creations and friendly aloha service. A gem you don't want to miss. Aloha! Br G"

  • "We had a lovely dinner at Monstera after hearing it be highly recommended by friends. The staff was so very gracious and accommodating given my husband's special needs requirements. A wonderful wine list which included one of my favorites, Elk Cove Pinot Gris. My yaki-soba was one the best I have ever had! My husband loved his kimchee! Do not miss the delightful restaurant if your at Mauna Lani!"

  • "Monstera is a pleasant, nicely decorated modern Japanese restaurant with excellent sushi and many other options for those who aren't sushi fans, such as noodle dishes, large sizzling platters and salads of various types. Good sake and local beer selection as well."

  • "not much else to say. This restaurant is upstairs in a shopping center, with outdoor tables having a nice view as the sun sets -- but not of the water, just countryside. The place was hopping at 6 PM and reservations appear to be a must. The service was excellent, and all of the food we had --shared ahi appetizer and chef's choice of sushi -- was excellent. It was a very pleasant evening of dining for us."

  • "This restaurant was bustling when we arrived. Service was friendly and helpful . Fish was very fresh. No matter what any of the reviews say , stay away from the Chuck Norris roll. It was awful.."

  • "I really like your restaurant. I noticed the prices went up. I love your green salad but $11.50 for a salad is a little too high and wasn't as big (to share) as I remember the previous week that we were there. That was a disappointment. A few other items went up like the miso soup and edamame but still reasonably priced. I realize we live in Hawaii and the cost of running a business is high but really?"

  • "We heard about the Chef and how great the food was from others at our hotel. Did see first time at the shopping area, but found second. Suhsi is fantastic. With a couple rolls along with great wine and beer. Great dinner for the 2 of us."

  • "Service for those of us who love cooking is one of the joys of eating out. And can make or break a restaurant. This server didn't know the fish "Japanese white fish" was the special, couldn't speak about shochu, forgot my husband's main and then once reminded brought sushi not sashimi. Food was excellent, but she wouldn't last a minute in a better managed restaurant!"

  • "The food we were served was great but the service from start to finish was a mess. Food arrived and random times, water left empty for 10min even after multiple requests to wait staff. Two dishes didn't arrive until asking about when we would get them and at least two cocktails never did show up. I'm pretty sure we could have walked out of the place without paying and no one would have noticed. The quality of the fish made up for some of the services issues but I would think twice about returning given the way our party of 4 was treated."

  • "The menu selections had quite a variety and something for everyone. Very unique dishes. Especially enjoyed the baked papaya. Saw several customers who had this dish and asked if they liked it. Everyone raved about it. Also liked the fact that some entrees had a small size and a regular size. Sometimes you are just not that hungry and the entree sounds so delicious."

  • "7:15 reservation. Took a while for the server to show up. He spent a lot of time bringing out one little thing or another to various tables; I don't know if he forgot things or if the kitchen was slow, but it was a strange scene. I don't expect showy service, but this guy didn't even know wine-serving basics. Instead of a taste, he dumped a full serving of wine into my glass and then turned the bottle upright without rotating it, dripping wine on the table. Food came out in random order; the last dish arrived at 8:05. A woman who brought some of the food (I thought she might be a manager) asked if everything was OK. I said the service was unacceptable; she replied, "Sorry, everyone showed up at once." Good food, but not worth the hassle."

  • "Rated as number 4 in the Hawaiian top ten of Japanese restaurants - the rest are all on Oahu - Monstera offers both excellent traditional and fusion Japanese cuisine. We have dined there a number of times and it is an excellent restaurant. We live in Vancouver, a city well- known for its top notchJapanese food culture, and Monstera would fit right in and do very well. Chef Norio and staff will respond to any taste, offering thoughtful advice and direction to one and all, so you don't have to love sushi or sashimi to eat here. Recommended is the sushi and sashimi, of course, but also creative futomaki, baked local fish, good noodles, and soups."

  • "We have returned to Monsterra over the past several years on our annual Hawaiin vacation . This place gets better and better and we are more informed each year about asian flavors.Kehau, our server, was enthusiastic and a great consultant for the kitchen. The wonderful chef made me riceless rolls where he ad-libbed placing the lucious fish over micro strands of daikon. Our spice levels were accommodated . The space is very relaxed and upbeat. We especially adored the riff on Tuna Tataki and crisp Korean fried chicken which we were told is the chefs mothers contribution. Udon is textured with the bite and chew that makes it memorable. Go there !"

  • "Servers were nice but service was very poor. Late dishes, miscommunication between hostess and waitstaff, etc.. Food was OK and overpriced for the island but not so much for the area. Would not recommend unless you don't want to pay a ton for any of the other restaurants in the area"

  • "We lived in Japan for 8 years and have pretty high standards when it comes to Japanese food (or doing Japanese food "using your own twist".) This restaurant is one of the very few we've been to that does not disappoint in any way. It is a family friendly place which means putting up with kids yelling and bouncing up and down on the same banquette you are sitting on but it is worth it! We've been once on this trip so far and have reservations for twice more (here for a week and eating dinner out every night). Go for a taste of the real (sometimes improved) thing!"

  • "This was our first time at monstera. We will definitely be back. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Some of the best spider rolls and sashimi we have ever had. The tempura and udon noodles were also flavorful and not greasy at all. The service was quick. They can handle large parties. The selection of beer and wine is also very good. The desserts you can skip. Otherwise. A great great experience."

  • "We've been going to Monstera several times during our Big Island visits since the restaurant opened. We love it--the food, freshness of the sushi, the service, We had reservations on New Year's Eve, and it seemed they must have overbooked (or misjudged how long patrons would stay) as there was a very long wait and many none-too-pleased people waiting. The wait was fine with us, and I suspect the backup was a glitch. We absolutely will return--it's one of our favorite restaurants on the island--but perhaps not on New Year's Eve."

  • "The food was delicious and portions small. If you are willing to pay for this delicious tapas-style food, it's worth it. I was disappointed in the service, though. I had reservations for two people and since we were a small group compared to the other diners, (other tables were 5-12 size parties), we were left "hanging" for a good part of the dinner. Unfortunately, this spoiled the dining experience for me."

  • "We dine at Monstera in Mauna Lani Shops and order many of the same items over and over- the food is consistent and service always excellent. Wait staff remember our names and greet us with smiles. Food fits all tastes, from sushi to noodles to tempura... Drinks from sake to world known beers to special vodka flavors- for kids tea and lemonade. We love this restaurant."
