A word from Modesto
Modesto Tapas Bar and Restaurant is St. Louis' first Spanish tapas restaurant. Tapas are a time-honored and cherished part of Spanish cuisine. The tapa (from the verb tapar - to cover) originally was a slice of bread or cured ham placed over the mouth of a wine glass. As the popularity of the custom grew, so did the variety. In Spain, tapas are much more than a culinary delight - they represent a lifestyle - an opportunity to share good times with friends in an unrushed, carefree manner. At Modesto guests are encouraged to do the same.Continued

  • "The goat cheese with tomato paste was sad. And when one advertises goat cheese, they expect more. The paeilla, while flavorful, was overcooked and did not seem to have hardly ANY of the seafood listed on the menu. I feel like I got simply ripped off on that one. The calamari is good, your citrus shrimp salad is good, your mixed mushrooms are okay, the (red) wine was good, the lamb was excellent and prepared perfectly (kudos), and the bread pudding was impressive. Just such lame paella (del mar)! Huge let down. "

  • "Lots of variety and great food. Also like the changing menu. Disappointing service but it might be limited to just our waitress "

  • "Tapas create the challenge of planning which dishes go together well. Random picks of what reads as good, don't necessarily mix well with the palate. Most dishes were tasty; some were too hot, some needed a little spice, some were too oily. Dessert was interesting but had too strong a taste of sesame and burnt torta."

  • "Pleasantly surprised by a flamenco show. Had well made drinks at the bar. Ordered several tapas that were all very good. Next time we will be more strategic with our ordering."

  • "The wife and I love to hit up Modesto whenever we get the chance. Dinner before The St. Louis Symphony presents Ben Folds show presented the perfect occasion. As always the food was great and the sangria roja was superb. We both highly recommend saving room to split the Cinnamon ice cream and bread pudding topped off with a espresso. I guess our only complaint is how they did the seating. We were the first people to be seated for the evening. The next two groups that came in were seated right next to us. Why not spread it out some at the beginning of the night when it is still very quiet in the establishment? This wasn't a deal breaker but it was rather awkward until the room started to fill with background noise (approx. 40min)."

  • "This restaurant is great. For anyone who has lived in other cities in the US, you will be hard pressed to find decent restaurants in St Louis. (St louisians think their restaurants are great but that is because they have no other comparisons since they have never been any where else but St Louis). Great menu selection, decent pricing, eclectic wine menu, decore has a good vibe to it. We dined with another couple and among the 4 of us we ordered a total of 10 dishes (remember this is a tapas menu so think appetizers for everything). All 10 scored an A."

  • "Went back during a visit to St. Louis with colleagues and happy to taste that Modesto still makes for a delicious night out. The tapas were executed well and the wine list has something for everyone and a nice selection of cocktails. Only thing that was a bit off was one of the paellla dishes which was a touch dry. We all left happy and full."

  • "This is a great small plates venue that just happens to be nestled in the famous Italian "The Hill" neighborhood of St Louis. We were visiting St Louis for marathon weekend. We love small plates and Modesto caught our eye on Yelp. Our experience was fantastic. Modesto serves up really good, fresh, and tasty cuisine. The venue is great and the service is impeccable. What a great find. We will return to Modesto in upcoming visits to St Louis!"

  • "We had a group of 6 celebrating a birthday. When I made this reservation I noted for the server to do something special and also noted it to the hostess when we arrived. Unfortunely it was not communicated to our server. I think our server was somwhat new. It took a very long time for our server to first address us to ask for our drinks. We were sat in a little cubby so maybe we were out if sight out of mind. The good was good it's just the service was not that great."

  • "Upon arriving to Modesto at 7:30 for our reservations at the same time, we were told it would be a few minutes. Then another group of 3 walked in and got seated right away along with 3 other groups. By this time it had been over 15 minutes. After talking to the hostess we found out one of those groups had a reservation for 7:15 and were late. I do not find it fair that just because they were late they get to be seated right away and even though we were on time we had to wait--so much for reservations. The food however was great! We ordered one of the dishes twice because it was so good! Delicious!"

  • "I love Spanish food and Modesto has a great representation of traditional and locally prepared tapas selections. I really like their paellas and feel that they bring authentic flavors and selections in their menu. I certainly recommend them to anyone who wants a different cuisine with a special spanish flair."

  • "My friend and I came in Wednesday night with this being our first time to the restaurant. The food was GREAT!! But the best part that will have me coming back was our server Megan. She was super personable, knowledgeable with her menu, and was just over all a warm and friendly person who made us feel like we had known her our whole lives. So I will be back and asking for Megan to be our server cause she sealed the deal with finding a new favorite restaurant to visit frequently."

  • "We four, grandparents and teenage grandchildren, love tapas, and Modesto's is a great place to enjoy same. It's great fun to share each others' selections and try new flavor combinations. We've been there previously and will go again."

  • "We always have fun at Modesto and love to take people who have never been because it is such a unique experience. They had some new menu items this time--some we would have again, some we would not. But that is the nature of little plates or tapas. Didn't care for the brussel sprouts or the short ribs. Brussel sprouts were not that tasty and short ribs were a little too over done. Some of the pieces on the lamb skewers were tough. But as usual, all the other items were great."

  • "The food was great but service just so so. I've never been to a tapas place where they served only 1 item at a time and the wait between dishes was very long. So we ended up getting a dish of potatoes, then 15 minutes later, our lamb skewers, and so on. Just a bit odd. Once it arrived, the food was very good."

  • "We were out for a fun time and we got it, the servers were fun and friendly, the wine was good and the tapas were great. We definitely shared tastes. I couldn't say it was inexpensive but it sure was an experience I would like to repeat!"

  • "Looking to expand on a bright, but decades old memory of tapas and share something flavourful and new with my friend, we found Modesto after a long day of shopping in the Soulard and Chinatown. Everything from the warm colouring to the frequent flashing in the pans of the kitchen to the dance of aromas is an embrace. Trust the bartender, especially concerning the local brown lager. Staff is helpful and knowledgeable. Any dish with goat cheese is to die for. Tocino con Salsa de Higo - braised pork belly with fig jam - is something we will dream about forever. Crispy artichokes melted in a citrus-bright pool on the tongue. The Hanger Steak in port reduction was a favourite of my friend. It's small dishes, so take some adventures!"

  • "We have enjoyed tapas at Modesto's many times, but were disappointed with two of our favorites: the calamari were tough and were a "skimpy" serving and the "veal roll-ups" were so tough we sent them back. The seafood stew was excellent as was the lobster bisque. The figs wrapped in bacon were heat hot and delicious. The service was fine as was the Spanish white wine. We will go back in the future, but we will hesitate to order our favorites for a while."

  • "There are LOTS of very good restaurants in the Saint Louis Metropolitan area and Modesto has ranked extremely high on my favorites list for years. The menu varies on a regular basis and the tapas selections are varied enough to satisfy everyone in your party. Highly recommended!"

  • "Heard good things about Modesto. Did not live up to expectations. Food was average at best. Sounded good on menu but poorly executed. Most dishes were over cooked"

  • "The only place on The Hill in STL that isn't italian food. Wonderful small plate dining style lets you try 6 or 8 different things for a really good price."

  • "Modesto is notable for its tapas which are truly in the Spanish style and a decent wine list centered on Spanish wines. The bar area is often filled with after work groups but does not interfere with dining in the adjacent area. This has been a favorite for a number of years and the quality and service have remained high even after a major kitchen change (the long time chef left) a few years ago."

  • "My wife and chose Modesto for one of our stops in a recent weekend in St. Louis. It is a great tapas restaurant with a large selection to choose from, excellent wines, and attentive wait staff. My wife loved the artichokes sautéed in olive oil and lemon. Another favorite was the shrimp in a saffron sauce. We would highly recommend Modesto."

  • "I went with my girlfriend for san valentine's day and it was awesome. Great service and the tapas were really good. The only thing that I thought that was not that great was the paella mixta which I thought it was going to be super good after eating some of small plates. The environment of the restaurant is great maybe a little bit loud if you are looking for a romantic dinner. The tapas that we had were: jamon serrano, queso de cabra and bunuelos de cangrejo. These were all amazing. We really enjoyed our dinner, so I highly recommend Modesto Restaurant for everyone who wants to have an amazing dinner!!"

  • "If you're tired of the same old menu offerings, this is a fun dining experience. Our waitress was helpful, attentive but not overbearing. The biggest challenge is realizing there are too many choices but that's part of the experience. Recommendations; don't miss the flash fried cauliflower, Pimento Rellenos, or the Fabada (our favorite). Also, the Malbec wine was excellent."

  • "OUT OF THIS WORLD. And the hazel nut sauted mushrooms - so good. My hubby, who doesn't like mushrooms, loved this dish. Try the white sangria. Something for everyone."

  • "This was about our 6th visit to Modesto as it is a favorite. As usual they did not disappoint overall. Our waitress did se flustered and rushed though, maybe new? Usually they're friendlier and more helpful which is necessary in a tapas bar. She also forgot an order but apologized when approached and took it off the bill. And she brought us the wrong sangria them tried to pass it off as the tight one even though it was the wrong color! It was louder than usual, making conversation a challenge. We brought another couple as guests for the 1st time. They really enjoyed it. All tapas and especially paella were delicious!"
