  • "Don't be fooled by the unassuming appearance of Mixteco. The food was superb, especially the creative combination of ingredients and the fabulous sauces. Beautiful presentation, too, and the service was excellent."

  • "Love the empanadas and my steak was perfectly cooked as medium. Never had to wait for water, or to have plates removed for next course. I did order plantains with my meal which were never delivered."

  • "This is a good BYO neighborhood place. Nice service and really good Mexican dishes that are not the typical Mexican-American style."

  • "Heard from neighbors that it was worth the drive north to try Mixteco Grill. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and the service was spot on. Come with your own beer/wine or stop in store across the street before you check in for your table. Must try - the guacamole & chips. Good luck trying to finish your meal after the guacamole arrives at your table, it is full of diced vegetables and delicious with the perfect chips for scooping. The Queso Fundido and Calamares al Ajillo disappeared as well with rave reviews. Tried 4 entrees which meant leftovers for lunch. Convenient street parking at $2/hr is a bonus for those of us tired of the $25 valet fees. Give Mixteco a try for dinner (brunch Sun) you'll wonder why you waited."

  • "The food was truly excellent and all in our party of six enjoyed their meals. We were celebrating a special occasion with family and they were very accommodating. We were seated in the front part of the dining room, very close to the open kitchen. I believe the kitchen staff was roasting peppers (or some kind of food to a char) and the room did become very smokey. It was strong and present in the air all through the meal and the air was even hazy towards the end. All of our clothes have a very strong odor like we had been around a campfire all night. It would happily return to this lovely restaurant, but only if they manage this issue of venting the cooking smoke!"

  • "The food here was quite tasty but the service can be slow at times. When the service catches up their personalities make up for any lag in dining. Great BYOB with very good authentic Mexican dishes, highly recommend!"

  • "We had a reservation for 7:00 on a Saturday night. Our party of 4 were seated promply which was a great way to start off the evening. It's BYO and our waiter was kind enough to ask if he could refrigerate the beer. The food was excellent. We all enjoyed the evening very much and will definately be back!"

  • "The quality of food is fantastic and the sauces are out of this world! Pick any item of the dinner or brunch menu and you will be delighted with your selection. BYOB makes you smile when the bill comes. We can't get enough of this place!!"

  • "I've been to Mixteco many times and I have yet to have a bad meal. The prices are moderate and it is BYOB. Try the rack of lamb or chicken breast. They are both wonderful."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Mixteco Grill definitely features some of the better Mexican cuisine in Chicago. While the prices reflect that, they are reasonable for the quality and quantity and the BYOB policy makes the meal a good overall value. The ambiance however is quite mediocre and not on par with the elevated cuisine."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "excellent service, great food. Only negatives is that the seating is very tight and the noise level is unacceptable. The great food trumps the other negatives"

  • "This is my go-to byob spot. I also love to bring out of towners here. The food is always excellent, especially the appetizer tamales. Inventive Mexican cuisine, lovely presentation and always professional and friendly service."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "That pretty much sums it up. The service is great - professional and warm - and the food is fabulous. Big flavors, amazing moles, and expert preparation (medium rare is really medium rare). And serving sizes are appropriate - not skimpy, not oversized. Dinner here is a real treat."

  • "Great food, byob, molé on the enchiladas that is amazingly good. It's pretty loud and lively but it's worth it"

  • "All in all my family and I were impressed with the restaurant. I feel that the menu choices were good, and everyone had a opportunity to eat something more authentic rather than the usual Mexican fare. I speak for all of us that we would recomend this restaurant as well as return."

  • "This is not your average Mexican menu, if you want to explore the Mexican flavors the way they were intended to be, this is the place."

  • "I love Mixteco Grill. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. Energy level is always pretty high and the food is outstanding. We had the calamari appetizer, rack of lamb and chicken with mole sauce. All were perfectly cooked and delicious. We have been many times and are never disappointed."

  • "we've been many times and it's always great. we love the food options, the wonderful, friendly and attentive service and the great vibe that this restaurant has. love that it's BYOB and they are ready for any beverage that you bring. brought a bottle of margarita mix and they immediately brought to the table glasses with salt and lime, ice and a pitcher. at the top of our list!"

  • "This place is so good. I have been twice, once on a random day by myself for a school assignment, and the second on a date over valentine's day weekend. The food was incredible both times I went, with valentine's day weekend appearing to have a smaller menu. Despite this smaller menu, I still had difficultly deciding on a meal as every single entree was as appealing as the next. In fact, I could have just ordered appetizers and been satisfied. I have had the tamales twice, which are fantastic and the best tamales I have every had. Along with that, I have had two entrees with two different kinds of mole. Exquisite. The waiter was fantastic and allowed us to take our time. The BYOB aspect is also nice and they chilled our beers."

  • "My wife is a vegetarian and I am much of the time. We loved our meatless choices, both the appetizer and our entrees. BYOB keeps the $$$ down for the budget minded. Looking forward to going back. We'll definitely be telling our friends about Mixteco!"

  • "I only wish our waiter would have come to check on us. After the food got there didn't see him till we finished."

  • "Mixteco never fails to impress. The food and service are always top notch. If you're looking for a more upscale, but not at upscale prices, Mexican dining experience then please try this restaurant. BYOB is a plus and they'll do everything to make sure your drinks are taken care of."

  • "The reservation follow up by Raul and Daphne were "Gold Star" standards. Our server was outstanding, the food was very, very good. The only problem (minor) was the noise level. Lots of people and lots of noise. Any party over 4 would have difficulty hearing diners at the ends of their table. This was a Saturday nite and the restaurant was deservedly crowded. We will be back!!"

  • "Reservations were easy to come by, the service was great, and the food was fantastic! Add to that, a BYOB option and Mixteco is a true winner. Looking forward to going back again very soon!"

  • "I enjoy eating Mexican food but I was never a fan of mole sauce. I find it very bitter..... Until I came to mixteco grill for dinner. I was very interested in their pork dish on the menu but it says "with mole sauce" so I asked our waiter if he can put the mole sauce on the side. He said that its actually better to try it as it is. So I told him that I find mole sauce to be bitter, he said that he will be back for me to try their mole first then I can decide if I want it on the side. It was really good! My friend ordered the special which was duck with mole as well. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. Great food! BYOB! Great company. Awesome service. Highly recommended!"

  • "Been to Mixteco multiple times- never once have I been disappointed. The staff is friendly and personable, the food is always great, biggest downside is that you will likely be waiting at least 30 minutes for a table on a Friday or Saturday night so definitely make a reservation!"

  • "We were a group of 7. We received excellent service, the food was delicious and the atmosphere lovely. Price point is perfect especially since Mixteco is BYOB!"

  • "This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Chicago. They have a great menu that changes regularly and offers a lot more than just your run-of-the-mill tacos and burritos. They hand-make the tortillas in the restaurant. The food is great as is the service. The only down-side is that it can get a little loud. BYOB is great, bring some wine :-) ."

  • "We've been to Mixteco several times now and everytime it's been excellent. The staff is friendly and helpful, the food is superb and it's a fun casual atmosphere. Love that it's BYOB as well."

  • "The group I was with had tamales, gaucamole and the calamari for appetizer - all were great! My dinner of mahi mahi was outstanding. I tasted the lamb and that was equally good, with a very good mole sauce. The other diners were just as happy with their beef and pork but I did not taste it. We had one dessert between the 6 of us - their pineapple upside down cake - highly recommend it - unlike any I've ever tasted. Service was great. It's BYOB so remember when you go."

  • "Mixteco Grill consistently applies creativity and skill to serve upmarket, chef driven Mexican food at moderate prices in a casual and fun atmosphere. Two lively, colorful dining rooms, one of which is in full view of the kitchen and another that's slightly more formal. Plus, they're a BYOB, which really keeps the total tab down. Great for couples, friends, even large groups."

  • "Delicious food; especially the steak and dessert. Enjoyed the prie-fix New Year's Eve menu but felt a little rushed through service."

  • "We had a fantastic time. We usually go there for special occasions which is not enough. This is second year we were there for New Years Eve. They had a set menu with a 5 course meal. Each course had 3 different options. I wanted them all!!!! They all looked so good. Of course we all tasted eachothers food. My friend is Gluten Free. They took very good care of her for each course. She was so thankful. Also all of her food was amazing. The staff was great. All of our food was served at the same time. Plates were cleared promptly and water was kept filled. Even better its a BYOB so we didnt go broke cause we like our wine!!! We had a snow storm so they had lots of cancellations and empty tables, but staff spirit was still good"

  • "Went with a group of six, including my parents, and we had a very enjoyable experience. We arrived early and were immediately accommodated with our server providing frosted mugs and limes for our beer. Our entire group arrived late but the restaurant did not mind. The food was great, definitely will be back again. I had the enchiladas, another in the group had the ribeye steak, and two others had the shrimp. I would highly recommend them all!"

  • "This place has always been one of my favorites, but in the year since my last visit, it remains hard to beat for quality & taste. I usually sit in the back room which is quieter, but we were seated in front & the noise level made it almost impossible to hear anything. But, the food remains great. I purposely, from previous experience, ordered the lamb chops medium, but they were medium rare, but so was everyone around us. The salsa verde was better than ever, the black mole sauce cannot b rivaled anywhere. The desserts, which I rarely order, sounded better than they tasted & let me down…the flan advertised as 'coffee' was actually rather tasteless & the crepes over-sweet & under-flavored."

  • "I love to go to Mixteco at least once a month. I know I do not have to take a chance on the food. It is always very good. It is also BYOB, which makes it economically attractive also."
