A word from MICHAEL MINA
The recipient of a 2012 and 2013 Michelin Star, Three-and-A-Half Stars from The San Francisco Chronicle's Michael Bauer and the title of Esquire's Restaurant of the Year 2011, MICHAEL MINA San Francisco is the eponymous signature restaurant featuring Michael Mina’s sensibilities with Japanese ingredients and French influence. The restaurant opened in 2010 in the same location (formerly Aqua) and city where Mina first established his culinary reputation 20 years ago.

In the kitchen, Executive Chef Ron Siegel works side by side with Michael Mina to present an ever-changing a la carte menu featuring the finest ingredients the Bay Area has to offer. Japanese for "Dueling," the Ketto Tasting Menu presents guests with a one-of-a-kind, multi-course dining experience where each diner of a party recieves a different dish, often composed of the same main ingredient, but using vastly different flavors and cooking techniques.

  • "Amazing service, food and overall experience. We have been to his places in vegas and they Pale in comparison to the San Francisco restaurant. We would go back again and again."

  • "From minute you walk in you are greeted warmly and attentively. Food was special! Presented very well! Each of the dishes ingredients were explained only to heighten your experience. Bryan Philon topped off the evening with his kindness. As far as hailing a trolley car for my family. Thanks Bryan!"

  • "Celebrated a birthday with the Ketto tasting. Meal started off wonderfully, with an assortment of carefully thought out hors d'oeveres. Our first course came without requested wine pairings. The waiter never bothered to check on our courses and was a huge disappointment. My fish course was so dry that it was inedible. Restaurant's response to my not enjoying a odd tasting white wine pairing with quail was to bring two different wines for the rest of the night to the table. room temperature was uncomfortably cold for the first two hours. Place was much too noisy, driven by overhead music. All in all, a disappointment for the greater than $500 bill. Attention to detail USED to be important to Michael. Now it's about revenue."

  • "Food was disappointing and service negligent. This is not a Michelin one star"

  • "I'm a big fan of Michael Mina...but this recent visit was very disappointing. Good offering was very limited. The tastes I have come to expect we're not there..."

  • "You know one of those places where you feel like you should add up to 40-50% in gratuity if you could? The reality is that only once or twice in a five year span would you come across places like the ones above! These wont necessarily be the Michelin 3 stars, or the best in NYC/SF/HK that you end up dining at. However these will be the ones that have essentially the same attributes Michael Mina- SF has i.e. Amazing food Adorable hospitality Breathtaking service AND THE KIND OF POSITIVITY THAT MAKES THE MOST SPECIAL OCCASION EXTRA SPECIAL! PS- the lobster pot pie is unbelievably yummy!"

  • "We were just in town for a couple of nights and knew we had to check it out. We had the chef's ketto tasting menu with the wine pairing. Seriously, the best tasting we've ever had. We would definitely recommend it to everyone we know going to SF!"

  • "One of my top 10 meals ever-easy. Perfect course progression and fabulous service"

  • "We had an excellent dinner. Quality ingredients prepared perfectly and very good service. But, the environment of this restaurant was so noisy that it was difficult to hold a conversation, or even to hear yourself think. Beyond energetic. The suckling pig and duck dishes were superior."

  • "Excellent food and service, but the music was to loud and inappropriate for the restaurant. The restaurant kept a high level on the service actions, but the information left to us was too unclear due to the high speed and the disturbing music."

  • "We google maps and still couldn't find the dang restaurant. If it weren't for the neon lights next door we would had been late for our reservation. I made a bday reservation and we arrived on time and studied the menu and read reviews beforehand. When I arrived I instantly noticed it was loud, barely could hear the server. Our bread was burnt, the veggies were ok similar to HomeTown Buffet and my lamb; I've had better during Easter at my Nona's. I can tell from other patrons checking out my romp when I walked to/from the bathroom; they were even with their dates and still ck'd out my romp! Geez!!! I needed to order a martini to wash down the taste of my dates so-called "lobster soup" .. Look more like chicken&Stars."

  • "Very pleased with my experience here. When we went, most customers were business dinners, but we were on vacation. The food was very good (just don't order the tuna tartare, the sesame oil is overpowering) and the service was attentive and spot on, particularly the sommelier. Would definitely recommend - it holds up to the one michelin star rating."

  • "We selected Mina for the Michelin star rating and had high expectation. service and ambience were great, but unfortunately the food fall way short in term of research for new tastes. a good meal that you could have in many other places spending a lot less"

  • "I can find the same quality of food (I had a steak and my husband had duck) at a restaurant that is half the price. Maybe I was there during a bad night? I'm not sure. They try to add values by giving us things we didn't ask for: finger foods and little desserts. Although, those little dishes are more special than the entrées we ordered. I did especially loved their spreads for the bread. The salad was also interesting. Perhaps because those starters set my expectation so high that it crashed hard when the entrées came out."

  • "I am a foodie and eat at restaurants all over the world. I enjoyed the food here, service was excellent, but it just did not have that something special that would bring me back again. I think part of it was the environment, which is a little sterile. Dining room is a weird shape. There are no table clothes on tables and so it seemed like I was eating some of my own gourmet cooking at home. Presentation on dishes was very nice. My simple rule is that if it would be easy to replicate the dishes I'm having, then why come out to eat at this place. I could have made any of these relatively simply constructed dishes, even the deconstructed lobster pot pie."

  • "We visited Michael's flagship restaurant years ago and have been hitting his other establishments ever since. Our first experience was a tasting menu sitting at the bar. It was one of our more talked about meals. The meal this time, however, was for her birthday, so we sat at a table. We had the full tasting menu with paired wines. We had several dishes which now make up some of our "the best --- I've ever had" list. Those include the lobster, squab, sashimi, and panna cotta. Our server, Julie, guided us through some top notch wines and made it one of our favorite pairings as well. WE left MM with full smiles and happy bellies."

  • "Our first trip to San Francisco and spent my birthday at Michael Mina's and we absolutely thrilled with food and the service we received. Our waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu and wine list. Will most definitely dine her again on my next trip to San Francisco and will dine at his restaurant my next trip to Vegas also."

  • "The Ketto tasting menu was mediocre and not very impressive. The wine pairings could have been better, service more consistent and not confrontative with the diners and just a poor experience and value for the money paid. Very disappointed."

  • "The Ketto menu here was one of the 10 best meals I've eaten, and I've eaten at some very good places. Based on the couple next to us, and my previous experience at Alinea (in Chicago), I'd recommend adding the wine pairings to what will already be an alarmingly expensive evening - you risk distracting yourself from the food. Perhaps, if you have the means (lucky you), the wine pairings would be nice on a second visit."

  • "Can't say enough about the Tuna Tartare! It's the main reason I go to Michael Mina."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "I've dined in several Michelin one, two and three star restaurants in NYC, Paris and Napa and service exceeded my expectations. The food was excellently prepared with a juxtaposition of flavors and textures. I will surely return the next time I am in San Francisco!"
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "It was just a fabulous evening. Flavors, presentation, freshness, attentiveness were all top echelon. Expensive, but worth it. Our entire group was absolutely bussing about it for days."
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "Food and presentation are so good. Ahi appetizer is always a favorite. Halibut was so yummy - absolutely perfect. Chamomile custard was good to the last drop - very delicate flavor."
    Dined on 7/23/2014
  • "Presentation of each dish and service was excellent."
    Dined on 7/23/2014
  • "The food at Michael Mina is of excellent quality, the taste profile of the dishes is always balanced between the ingredients and stays with the core of the taste of each and every ingredient. The wine list is remarkable, especially wines from the old world - France and Italy, but also Germany and Austria - is far beyond what you usually see in comparable restaurants. Service is very engaged, but at peak times sometimes a little too busy to get all the nuances of a table. Overall, a great dining experience."

  • "Service was a bit inattentive for three men in suits and were willing to spend much more money than we did but service left us not wanting to stay longer."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "We chose Michael Mina to celebrate our first anniversary - everything was absolutely perfect. Not only did we receive an anniversary card waiting for our intimate table for two right up front, but we observed not only were we, but every guest we observed, treated like royalty! Food and service could not be better. Will be making this a more frequent dining spot. THANK YOU for making our special day absolutely perfect!"

  • "It's a hot spot with decent food and service but it's over-rated and over-priced. The 6 pieces of sashimi were minuscule and the hand-rubbed wasabi was sufficient for only one of the six...and not worth $36. If you're trying to impress a guest you'll only impress them with your wasting money!"
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "The food quality is high & creative but at petite portions, the ambience is excellent for power lunch discussion. Just wish that the attendants pay more attention to the the guests' table, rather than milling around aimlessly. Even though it is not crowded at all, it took some time for the drink ordered to arrive, and no one bothered to ask whether we'd like bread or not unless we felt something was missin, long rather the entre has arrived."
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "Expensive, but well worth every penny spent. The food was beyond our expectations - tasty, creative, and beautifully served. Service was also excellent."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "The food isn't that great, especially the main dish."
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "The food was delicious but the appetizer plate portions are getting smaller and smaller"

  • "The staff was very attentive and made for a great meal"
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Not a single complaint. Service was outstanding and the 9 course ketto tasting was one of the best culinary experiences I have ever had."

  • "Michael Mina has a vision how to have a memorable dining experience. From the time you walk in the door, order from the menu, see the food for the first time, taste the food for the first time, your experience will never be the same. Each aspect has been thought about ahead of time, the staff is well organized to pay attention to everything happening during the meal. The food, from concept to presentation, sets the tone for the enjoyment of the actual taste. Dessert was a small reminder of how creativity can accent actual taste as well. Don't think that this is an inexpensive meal, because it isn't. However what you get in return for what you pay, is what makes the meal a Memorable Dining Experience."

  • "Just spent a week in San Francisco and this was unfortunately our only poor experience. Relative to all of our other dining experiences (of which Quince was a particular highlight), Michael Mina was significantly below par in all categories. Food was average, at best, and the service was astoundingly bad for a restaurant that purports to be of that level of quality. Waiter was completely uninspired and offered no comment or colour on the menu and the middle-aged fellow working the door was astonishingly impolite. Should have went with our instincts and left before dining with so many better options in San Francisco..."

  • "After reading some of the other reviews I found it hard to believe what some of the people were complaining about. From start to finish the food and service were excellent. My only complaint was that we had to catch a show and did not have time for the tasting menu. This was a real treat!!!"

  • "Celebrated a birthday, we created our own "tasting menu". The food was delicious, elegant & sexy. The service was outstanding that made for a lovely experience."

  • "The food, service and ambiance were great. We celebrated my fiancé's birthday, and the staff made him and us feel very special. It unfortunately wasn't the best (or even close to the best). We ordered the ketto menu and a bottle recommended by the sommelier. The food was good, but not worth it. For it's price and brand, I expected more innovative flavors. The salmon/halibut/cooked fish dish fell so flat. We begrudgingly finished our dishes. If I were to come back (unlikely), I'd order ala carte. Sorry Michael Mina, you're no Commis."
