Diner Reviews
  • "No complaints. The food was good, our server delightful and the restaurant very attractive. The only downside is the very busy parking lot at lunch time. I arrived before noon and got the last parking place. There appeared to be more parking across the street, but it was a busy street and didn't look easy to cross. What's more patrons speed through the lot desperately seeking places to park."

  • "Too noisy says it all. We won't go back because conversation, relaxing or stimulating, was impossible."

  • "Enjoyed a business dinner with colleagues traveling into town from elsewhere. One was a Texan, so it was risky going to a Mexican restaurant, as they have such great SW fare in Texas. But he loved it. Thumbs up for Mez!"

  • "When ever I am in durham I always go back. Not the typical Mexican restaurant. A step up. Good margaritas and even better fish tacos"

  • "Great place to eat if you like Mexican food and an adult atmosphere!"

  • "I go to Mez often and love bringing friends there to eat. The food this time was good but a bit inconsistent. Some entrees that we chose specifically to appeal to those who did not want something spicy, ended up being very spicy that night - despite both the server and me attesting to the fact that this was not normally a spicy dish. It also took a ridiculously long time to get our food which was atypical of the restaurant which I usually find has fast service. Still we had a great time overall. The guacamole was awesome and most entrees such as the fish tacos adobado, the steak tacos and the shrimp dish with corn and rice and beans - name escapes me now - were excellent as always. Just need consistency through the end of the night."

  • "On occasional visits to Raleigh I must find my way to Mez. They serve my Mexican favorites prepared with high quality ingredients and a true chef's touch. This not a typical Mexican restaurant. Food is perfectly seasoned and artfully presented. My favorites include the chicken enchiladas with a delicious dark mole, the brisket, fish tacos and the tamal. The menu lists a variety of options from steak to seafood, something to suit any palate. The drink menu is extensive but I wish they tapped many more of the great local craft beers. The place is beautiful with great atmosphere. The service is friendly and attentive but not too fast, a good thing as you will be happy to linger for a while."

  • "This was by far the worst meal I have ever had Mexican restaurant. Burrito was ice cold, came out within 2 minutes of been ordered. Flavors didn't work at all. Guacamole was gross. I'd expect more from Chapel Hill Restaurant group. This was during the World Cup, so maybe all the cooks were more interested in soccer than cooking edible food for paying customers. Never eat here."

  • "I always select Mez as my restaurant of choice. I can count on the consistent food quality; the friendly smiles; and the overall professionalism of the wait staff."

  • "Went with 3 other people. My tuna (which was discussed as ahi and just seared) was way overcooked and had to be sent back. Happens. But then my friend pulled out a 6" long hair that had been cooked into her dish. The food was good and the server did well - - but I certainly would have expected the manager to come over and apologize. I'm not one that expects, nor accepts, being 'comped' - - but I do expect an apology in situations like this."

  • "I have been to Mez several times for both catered events and regular dining. The food is always good and the service is as well. They also have a nice variety of dishes available."

  • "We had a nice Father's Day dinner at Mez. With two picky children, it's hard to find restaurants that make everyone happy, but Mez was able to. It's kid-friendly, particularly for kids that aren't toddlers and can sit through an hour long dinner, but not so kid-friendly that it can't also be romantic or a special adult only dinner. We also were there early (at 6) and I imagine there's less kids as the evening goes on. Food is delicious and reasonably priced."

  • "We have been to Mez before and had a great experience. However this time we got a table in a crowded corner far from the beautiful waterfall. We had to go ask for our server be aside she never greeted us for a drink order. She was not friendly or quick. We basically are our tacos and left to find another place for cocktails. The sangria was good but that's all I can say that's positive about this dinner. I doubt we will be back anytime soon."

  • "We had a great time at Mez. We originally requested to sit on the patio and even though the restaurant was full, they found us a very comfortable table inside right before a big storm. Thanks for accommodating us. We had a great time."

  • "The catfish in the fish taco's was not good. The spinach enchiladas were tough on the ends & the tortilla chips unremarkable."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Mez and plan to return soon. This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend and we were glad we checked it out. Since we live in Cary and work in N. Raleigh, it's off our 'beaten path' so we were unfamiliar with it. We arrived about 30 minutes ahead of our reservation time expecting to have a cocktail at the bar while we waited but we were seated right away (due to it's location I expect it's much more popular for lunch). The service was great, as was the food. We'll definitely be back again soon."

  • "Perfect wait service. Helpful, pleasant, not intrusive. Good presentation of food, tasty, warm fresh chips with salsa and margaritas yummy start. Go early and sit outside if weather is pleasant. Sunday dinner time not crowded, just what we preferred. "

  • "A great "go-to" with an interesting menu, solid service, manageable price point and lively but comfortable ambiance. Always friendly, warm staff. Transitions well from business lunch to fun night spot."

  • "I love this restaurant. I think their guacamole is a bit overpriced, but the fish tacos are amazing. It can get very loud, which can make it hard to carry on a conversation, especially in a booth."

  • "Food and service were great. However, even with a reservation it took 1.5 hrs to "do" lunch. Not because of service but because it was that crowded. Plan ahead if you dine here for lunch. "

  • "we went there for Mothers Day brunch and it was a good experience but early in the day, i think lunch or dinner might be better but the food was very good"

  • "As always the food was fresh and flavorful. The table service has always been average, but it's nice not to be disturbed much with suggestions. I enjoy The Mez."

  • "We really enjoyed the food at Mez. My son and I both had chicken tamales, my daughter steak tacos and my wife had the lamb special. We all really liked what we had. The service was a bit underwhelming; I think they were short-handed, which seemed a bit odd for mother's day. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The manager who acted as our server was covering a lot of ground and did the best he could. One thing I would recommend is to provide chips and salsa instead of charging ... this is the only Mexican restaurant I've ever been to that doesn't give guests chips and salsa. It's a small thing, I know, but when I'm paying $24 for the lamb special, throw me a bone."

  • "Our first time to Mez. The food was great! We had guacamole to start that was so fresh and creamy that it melted in your mouth. Also had the fish taco which had a generous portion of fish and was delish……… "

  • "My friend and I tried it for the first time for Cinco de Mayo and we were really impressed with the food and service. We'll definitely be coming back!"

  • "We went there as a group of 6 for a friends birthday. We like the decor' there, but because of the high ceilings, the noise level made it hard to talk as a group. Our server was very attentive. The food came out a little too quickly for us. We were making a night of it. But we managed to stay and chat until 10 pm. Would have stayed later, but it was clear that the staff was trying to clean up and close. Food is above average. The outdoor patio looks nice for dining. Would try that next time in a larger group."

  • "the steak used in the Carne Asada tacos was not tender this time. When ordered in the past it was always tender & moist. Salsas, guacamole all great, as usual. Other meals also very good."

  • "The snobby hostess set the tone for our lunch and the below average food didn't help. The fish tacos were under seasoned and the fish over cooked. Our server, however, was very good. I didn't catch his name but he's the only person there worth keeping. Will not be back"

  • "Restaurant was highly recommended for food and ambience. Online booking was easy, restaurant beautiful. We were immediately seated in a booth, as requested. Waiter was friendly and didn't leave us sitting. We ordered drinks and queso flameado, which were tasty. Waiter came back several times to make sure we didn't feel ignored, but we were talking and took a while to order. The food came quickly and it wasn't bad but nothing special. I had spinach enchiladas, which looked beautiful but were only fair. A friend had shrimp cocktail, which he liked. The third had tacos of some sort. Overall, if you want Americanized Mexican food in a nice place at a high price, the place would work. If you want Mexican Mexican food, find somewhere else. "

  • "Mez is a really nice restaurant, but if you are expecting tex-mex, you will be disappointed. All the ingrdients are there but somehow the way it all comes together just doesn't work. Even the margaritas are mediocre and served in the wrong kind of glasses! "

  • "Mez strikes you right away with it's Central American design of faux adobe walls and vaulted ceilings, compete with indoor and outdoor balcony seating. The food is excellent, offering a wide array of Latin dishes with a contemporary flare for resulting in creative flavor combinations that never fail to impress. With excellent service and ample parking you will want to keep coming back to try everything on the huge menu."

  • "The last time I was at Mez was months ago. We had a wonderful experience and the food was top notch. This time the quality felt a little lacking. The cocktails were incredibly weak. Particularly the sangria. My glass was over half full with fruit and ice -- very little room for the sangria itself. The server was not particularly friendly and continually tried to rush us through our meals and then out the door. I had the Pescado Veracruz. This time the fish was NC trout which was just 'ok' but particularly disappointing was the flautas. They were barely fried -- almost doughy. Guacamole was excellent as I remember and my friend who had the carne asada tacos said her's was amazing too."
