Diner Reviews
  • "Fine dining with attentive (but not suffocating) service. Food was top notch as was the wine list with lots of variety. Our server knew the menu well and was able to make excellent suggestions. Service was prompt, the meal delicious and the creme brûlée was a perfect end."

  • "The dining room was attractive; open and inviting. The food, however, was a distinct disappointment. The salad was small; if bread was desired it had to be purchased as an "appetizer". A half-sized order of scallops produced two (well cooked) specimens on a bed of creamed corn that had too many bits of cob. The lamb cassoulet boasted two tablespoons of beans and lamb that was dry despite being braised. It was accompanied by undercooked baby carrots. II conclude that the kitchen staff is untrained, oversight is lacking and the main mission of the establishment is to derive up the bill. Drinks were OK but costly. For a mediocre meal the bill was $139.00 before tip. I believe any executive chef and restaurant owner can do far better."

  • "I took my new girlfriend here on our first date. The service and food was excellent. The wine recommendation for our meal was incredible. We enjoyed the view and the servers were awesome. My girlfriend was totally impressed with everything. Thank you for a wonderful evening."

  • "I always rate a restaurant by saying "would I go there again" compared to the other restaurants in the area. And Merrimans's rises to the top of my list of restaurants in Poipu that I would definitely go to again."

  • "Everything about dining at Merriman's in Poipu was outstanding. It's a beautiful restaurant with top notch service, stunning sunset views, a very creative menu and mouthwatering deliciousness in every bite. My entree was perfectly prepared seared ahi on a bed of pureed, curried hearts of palm and a unique blend of vegetables. Truly spectacular experience!"

  • "Quality of food is not worth the price. The Paellla was priced at $59. When we got it, the dish was so salty that we had to return it and order something different. The scallops were okay but the bacon bits that were served with the scallops were charred so it added a burnt flavor to a somewhat delicious dish. We've been there before and were very satisfied. This last visit was disappointing. It seems as though the restaurant is lacking quality control in the kitchen."

  • "Friends gave us a gift certificate to Merrimans because they loved it. We've always eaten elsewhere when in Poipu. We were put off at first because the restaurant was out of our two choices at 7:30. Then the server came back to say they had my husbands choice, but not mine. Our server was terrific, my second choice was terrific, the ambiance was terrific. My only other complaint was that the spinach salad was overdressed. We have reservations again for tomorrow night."

  • "Loved the open air concept up on the second floor. Beautiful sunny spot. Food was wonderful! Great service too! Worth the trip and getting reservations. Dessert was great too!"

  • "Our waitress was wonderful helping us with the menu items."

  • "I came here twice in April 2013 and service and food was fantastic. Tonight I came with my daughters and very little aloha... perhaps because we were only women. When I told my server there was sand in the salad, no apologies or removing it from the bill, only I'll tell the chef. They charge $40 for 4 scallops, really? We are from SF and we expect at least 4 star service for a restaurant this "quality". We had another reservation for this Friday, but I just cancelled to go to Tidepools at the Hyatt instead. I come to Kauai at least 2 weeks a year and doubt we will try Merriman's Fish House again."

  • "The food and service was fantastic. Our server was friendly and very attentive. I would recommend this restaurant to any one who visits Kauai."

  • "Great views for sunset. We sat on the Lanai which was a romantic setting. Unfortunately, occasionally there was an odor coming from the marsh just below. Service was great. Great option for full size entrees or smaller sizes."

  • "Loved the environment of the upstairs restaurant. lots of open windows, ceiling fans, exposed ceiling rafters, all white inside and that was just the start. Food was delicious, great presentation too. Fish - good variety of fresh Hawaiian fish (would expect nothing less), cooked to perfection. We did not feel rushed for dinner which happens sometimes in restaurants. The Kukui'ula Shopping Center is a great addition to the Poipu Beach area with all the new luxury condos and homes being built and Merriman's fits perfectly. Will definitely go back."

  • "It was our anniversary. They brought us champagne& card from the staff. Our waitress was great; the view was great as we had a table perfect for the sunset.Great use of local fare & beautifully presented. Homemade jam changes daily. Fresh local fish (they even know the boat it came off of) and a variety of sauces and vegetables accompany it. Best meal on the island and we have been coming to Kauai for over 25 years. It's only been here a few years which is why we just discovered it. Not a place for plain jane, steak and potato people- this is a sensuous delight for the palate. They give you the option of having 2 small potions of entrees which is a great way to experience more for 1 visit. Don't miss the chocolate sack for dessert!"

  • "This restaurant sits atop it's more casual sister restaurant. The casual dining experience below appeared fun but very noisy. Upstairs with a different menu and a more elegant ambience there was a good selection of wines, appetizers, salads and fish or meat entrees. The food was good but not great. I had the chicken which, although lightly bathed in sauces and gravies was still too dry around the breast. Taste was good but had a slight burnt tinge to it, likely from the pan searing."

  • "There is no ocean view at this restaurant, but the wonderful food and service far out weigh this minor shortcoming."
    Dined on 3/18/2014
  • "We've dined here before and always enjoyed the food and ambience...previously. This visit (Sunday 3/16) there was a very unfortunate odor emanating from the septic/sewer vents right under the lovely lanai. View was great, but depending on the wind direction the smell was almost overpowering. The server admitted that this was an ongoing problem over the last several months. Hope they can get this resolved!"

  • "We have eaten at Merriman's each year since it opened. This year it seems it has hit its stride. Everything came together - food, service, ambiance. A special of opah cheeks and local prawns was a hit with two of our party, the scallops were done perfectly, and the lamb was cooked exactly as ordered. The only problem? No room for dessert!"

  • "We make plans to come to this restaurant with our yearly visit. Always rated it highly. This time we were disappointed with the service. We waited a half hour after being seated for the waiter. Not acceptable. The food was good but previous dinings were better."

  • "Dinner was fantastic. The coconut pain killer drink was very yummy. I did the duo for dinner and it was great to try two entrees. I would skip the malasadas. They were hard balls of dough. Not at all like the light and fluffy malasadas at Kmart."

  • "My wife and I vacation in Kauai in Feb each year. We've developed the habit of making Merriman's the last dinner on the island before flying home. Generally we've chosen Merriman's due to location and other things we want to do before leaving, rather than the food. Previous meals have been average for a restaurant in this price range. However, our meal there this year was exceptional and Tiare took excellent care of us."

  • "We had dined at Merriman's Poipu several years ago to cold food and poor service (We think the waiter was interviewing at another table for a new job.). This renewed attempt was far superior. Matt was attentive and knowledgeable. The service flowed smoothly at a comfortable pace. We did not feel rushed or ignored. We will return with renewed optimism."

  • "Don't go to Hawaii and miss this restaurant. It is high end but the gourmet, quality food is worth it. It is one of those meals you think about after you are home. Enjoy."

  • "We had a particularly lovely meal with a creative presentation. The waiter was very attentive. The view from our seat proved a wonderful panorama for the sunset. This was a significant improvement over our experience last year, when the waiter was haughty and rushed our meal. I'm glad we gave it another try."

  • "My wife and I have been to Merriman's Big Island restaurant in Waimea on two occasions and rate it as one of the main reasons to bring us back to the Big Island a third time. We were looking forward to having dinner at the Fish House in Po'ipu on Kaua'i for the first time and we were not disappointed. The food was exceptional: all the dishes were delicious, creative, sophisticated, and perfectly executed. Every mouthful was a joy to experience. Service was attentive and appropriate. The ambiance is wonderful: cool building with nicely appointed furnishings and artwork. The wooden table on the veranda at the entrance is spectacular! We loved the open walls throughout allowing the beautifully aromatic Hawai'ian breezes to waft through."

  • "We have loved Merriman's in Big Island (both Waimea and Waikoloa) , and loved this restaurant in Kauai for the last few years. But this year, for the first time, we are very very disappointed. Though the "Onaga" dish as the today's special I ordered was excellent as always, the dishes the other 3 members of our group ordered were either poor or strange taste (unbalanced). Also the side vegetable (eggplant) I ordered was too weird for me and my wife, so we could not eat most of it. It seems that quality is unsteady. Hope it would be improved by the next time we visit."

  • "Someone recommended Merriman's and we went there for dinner. Unlike other restaurants in the newly developed "neighborhood' development, Merriman's felt like we were in a New England restaurant overlooking the fields and the dunes. We chose the Monchong fish dish because the server described it as a favorite. We consider ourselves foodies, and go out to eat a lot at great restaurants, and the dish was one of the best I've ever had. Great wine list, too. Open and airy, but not big and bustling. Very comfortable, great service and fabulour food."

  • "This was our second visit in two weeks and our first great experience was not a fluke. Again the service and food was exceptional. This will be our new " go to " restaurant in the Poipu area. Joseph, our waiter, was great once again."

  • "Everyone from the hostess, to the bar staff to the servers were truly thoughtful and friendly. The best experience we had in 19 days in Hawaii."

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Poipu Merriman's upstairs dining room. The rabbit appetizer was very good although a bit on the salty side. My husband's fish was excellent as was the diver scallops that I had. The service was fantastic! The only complaint would be an occasional smell of sewage that wafted up from the lower level. Not sure of the cause, but it was nasty."

  • "My wife and I dined at Merriman's and it lived up to recommendations! We had a reservation and we're seated promptly. Most of the menu is local fare. Fresh caught fish, local beef and fresh Kauai greens. Our waiter, Joseph, was attentive and knowledgeable. The food was well prepared, nice presentation, remarkable flavor. The Monchong is possibly the best fish we have ever eaten! The special, local raised rabbit was a nice change of pace. Done two ways with a good mix of flavors. We will definitely return. I put it at the top of Poipu fine eating. I think they will give The Beach House, Roy's, and Tidepools a run for their money."

  • "We've been to Merriman's two restaurants on Maui (Monkeypod Kitchen and Merriman's) and this one is closer to the Monkeypod experience. Great farm to table kind of meal (crab/lobster cake was amazing, fish superb and chocolate purse a great finale), fantastic ambiance and superior service. This is a reason to come back to Kaui ! If in Poipu, this is a top option, certainly our favourite."
