Diner Reviews
  • "We paid a brief visit to Charleston from another foodie city, Seattle, and dined at McCrady's on an average Monday night, on a moderately comfortable evening, and left the restaurant enthralled! Sure, we can praise the atmosphere, the service, etc., But, ultimately, it's about the food and its inventive preparations. In this case, pure perfection! Bravo to Chef Brock!"

  • "We did the fixed price 4-course dinner. The scallop opener was a bit of a disappointment as it looked beautiful, but we have had better bay scallops. The other three dishes were great. We had the flounder and grouper dishes for the second course and both were excellent. We had the lamb dish for the meat course and it was done perfectly. The chocolate dessert dish was also outstanding. Our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive, but not pesky. It was a very fine experience, although it is pricey."

  • "Tasting menu- innovative perfection. One of the nicest meals I have ever had, would rate it one of the top tables in the country."

  • "This was the highlight of our vacation in Charleston. Perfect execution on all fronts. Fantastic ambience - luxurious without being stuffy. Portions were just the right size, leaving us satisfied and not stuffed. Waiters attentive without being intrusive. Stunning wine list - even the "by the glass" selections. Food was sublime, even the bread (which usually seems to be an afterthought). The bread came with olive oil as well as butter. The oil was almost as good as one we'd had in Italy that had been freshly pressed. Sweetbreads were lick the plate delicious. Had the most moist and flavorful pork chop ever (Berkshire). Wagyu beef was sinful. A must for lovers of good food!! Can't rate highly enough."

  • "One of the best meals I have ever had. Our server (wish I remembered her name) was the rare combination of highly professional and friendly. Bottom line, although it is pricey, you get what you pay for. I highly recommend McCrady's to anyone looking for a first rate dining experience while in Charleston. Make reservations well in advance if at all possible."

  • "Charleston has so many great restaurants. Our family has enjoyed a number of fine dining experiences in this historic city. Recently, we were unable to get into our favorite farm to fork restaurant, Husk. We noticed that the website made reference to an affiliate as an alternative; McCrady's. It was a very special evening. One of the finest dining experiences we have ever had. Period. Of course, once we learned of the relationship of the two restaurants, as parent and child, so to speak, it all made perfect sense. Book here and expect a special evening!"

  • "We really like the four course menu. Choices are good and food is always great. Very creative."

  • "The Restaurant is off the beaten path, a little hard to find BUT the food and service was wonderful. We had the four course special and it was excellent. Good wines and even though I am not a connoisseur of wines, but the list was extensive. Service was superb. It is pricey, not for the faint of heart or thing wallet. Excellent evening"

  • "Established in 1788 or so, we loved the old brick & arches ambience along with art works depicting local scenes. We started with crispy sweetbreads & tender wagyu beef tartare, on to the crispy skinned trout & pork duo- licked our plates clean. Martini & bubbles then wine by the glass - all generous pours. Waiter was professional & knowledgable. Wish we had a McCradys in our hometown!"

  • "every dish in the pick four for $65 had a delicate beauty in the presentation and a superb flavor to grab your eatin' soul. the pea broth and peas that caressed the local clams, the rutabaga puree popped under a super tasty flounder, the pistachio cream and a wonderful snapper, and a beautifully sculpted carrot ginger dessert. now all these carefully crafted dishes take time so dinner can drag as you finish off the first wine order and start playing Guess My Profession as you overhear the energetic conversation of the nearby bar group - Tuesday evening was not busy but our enclosed booth opened to the bar."

  • "I'm a pretty good cook and I wouldn't attempt the techniques , or combination of ingredients that this fine restaurant presents. Also I wouldn't know where to find them. I had the dry aged breast of duck that was crisp on the outside and medium rare inside exactly like the waiter said it would be. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the food and very pleasant and professional. It is not as expensive as I previously thought, considering the high level of quality."

  • "We were only in Charleston for one night. This was A last minute reservation and everything was top Notch I had the beef coulette. It was wonderful! My Husband had the duck and this too was great ! Service was outstanding ..we have already recommended to several others Thank you"

  • "The title really says it all. We sat in an alcove off the bar, where we could order from both the bar menu and the regular menu. We decided to do a bit of each, and the choices recommended by our server were awesome. The service was attentive and friendly, without being overbearing. Although we aren't wine drinkers, the wine list was extensive. The drinks were also outstanding. The highlight was a very creative frozen grits dessert. (Don't doubt. ... they are delicious.)"

  • "Truly outstanding food and service. The prix fix menu for $65 was a steal for the variety and quality of dishes you receive. Everything I ate was not only delicious and exploding with flavor, but aesthetically brilliant as well. I highly recommend the duo of lamb for your meat course. Also, they have a great cocktail menu as well."

  • "Great history to the building (George Washington ate there) and great food. Tasting menu had several fantastic and memorable items including a wonderful Carolina Gold rice dish. Tasting menu is priced well as far as those things go."

  • "Wonderful meal. Dessert was a bit disappointing served it frozen, said it is always like that. However the waitress did not discribe it that way and when we said something she acted shocked until she went back in kitchen and came out with excuse "always like that". When it thawed and I could get a fork in it it was very nice. As I walk past a table with a lady eating the same dessert she spooned it up just like an excellent custard texture. I realize things need to be frozed then thawed. But just admit it was brought out 10in early."

  • "We had a lovely evening there. Food was excellent. We enjoyed the four course selection. The only improvement would be on the clam appetizer. Needed more clams and less peas."

  • "One of the best restaurants I have ever been to. I had the pork with burnt honey, black truffle, and butternut squash. My date had lamb paired with lamb belly. Both were amazing. Good cocktails and wine, plus everything was local. A must do when in Charleston."

  • "There were two of us for dinner on a Saturday evening. The food choices were a bit out of the ordinary for me. I chose the chicken from the a la carte menu. My companion chose from the 4 course menu. The 4 course menu was too much food for me. I am not big on fish and did not feel like having dessert. My companion had the frozen grits dessert and seemed to enjoy it."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "We did the very manageable 4 course tasting menu. It was nice to leave feeling satisfied and not overly stuffed. The sweetbreads were amazing, very large and juicy. and the pork duo, wow so good! The fish course was just okay in my opinion. The cheese plate was extremely well selected and the frozen grits was so different but very good!"

  • "The bar is incredible. I was impressed with the wine list and the wines available by the glass we unique and unusual. Yes, you pay up for this experience, but if you are wine drinker it is well worth the cost. The food was presented well and was delicious. I was little disappointed in the menu options. The very limited menu options is why I gave the food 4 stars instead of 5. I will defintely go back, but probably for the bar. The service and the staff were exceptional and very knowledgable of the food and wine."

  • "Dinner here was fantastic. We started with cocktails-try the Copycat! Then did the 4 course. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. I would come regularly if I lived in Charleston. The frozen grits were a most incredible delight. Espresso was great. Jodi-server and assistant sommelier was brilliant! We asked her for tips to great low country and local restaurants/cafés. She wrote a list including how and what to order. We followed her lead and wow!!! That's another review. Food and service were wonderful. Beautiful space but a bit loud. That said, I'd return-gladly!"

  • "From the time we arrived and until we departed, the experience was wonderful. The employees were professional in every aspect of our dining and were quick to provide service and make recommendations. The food was an interesting combination of the known with the creative and adding local products. Each bite was special and enjoyable. McCrady's is what fine dining is all about..."

  • "Our group had a wonderful dining experience. We were disappointed, however, with the lack of understanding that the restaurant has with regard to patrons NOT needing to have 4 courses. There was not a reasonable accommodation for just ordering less food. We would have preferred to have two shared main courses and two shared appetizers. The waiter impressed us with the fact that the four courses were very minimal and would not be too much. This definitely was not the case. The restaurant would be that much better if it didn't force the 4 course choice on patrons."

  • "Enjoyed our meal and the unique offerings....a little pricey for the value. Glad we went!"

  • "Everything was elegant. The artfully composed plates were pretty, with all elements carefully chosen to harmonize. The flavors were perfectly balanced. Each bite was a delight. The wines paired to the dishes were perfect. The sweetbreads were the best ever. We loved the trout, the duck, the clams, the snapper and the pork, all of which were cooked perfectly and surrounded by lovely little accompaniments. Fortunately, I asked the waiter to describe the frozen parfait of grits, which turned out to be the smoothest, most luscious, mildly corny ice cream with rosy syrup and a dab of peach. The only mild disappointment was the carrot cremeux dessert with too much going on. The meal was delivered at a perfect pace. Beautiful room! Not too loud!"

  • "In a city known for its food, this was truly the standout restaurant. The creativity shown in using typically southern ingredients was remarkable. I highly recommend the four course dinner offering with the wine pairing. My husband and I did it twice and each of the eight items we had was a home run. We actually split the courses. There was a five dollar splitting charge, but each of the courses was beautifully presented and we had plenty of food. The service was excellent and the servers were knowledgeable and very helpful. All in all, it was a highlight of our visit to Charleston."

  • "(-) Overpriced, small plates, some flavors were really awful (the scallops were small and a disappointment in this fava bean purée with its leaves-tasted too grassy, hominy was yuck, the filet came with a side of mushrooms had too many tart pickled ones in the mix) (+ish) Great service (which we def paid for!), fish were perfectly seared and seasoned, steak was also perfectly med rare (but not the best), tried sweetbread for the first time and it was amazingly tender, the pork duo with pork belly in a burnt honey and truffle glaze was out of this world (but the size of two quarters), grit parfait with huckleberry was better than any icecream or gelato I've ever had (if it weren't solid as a brick). Magnolias> McGrady's"

  • "In the 4 years since we last visited this institution, the quality of the cuisine and the excellence of the service have been maintained to standards which should be the envy of competitors and the "bar" they aspire to reach. The only discordant note one might critique is an unwillingness to "let the food speak for itself." It was, at least for this diner who has been fortunate enough to visit many of the world's finest restaurants, unnecessary and frankly a bit pretentious, to present each dish within each course with a lengthy description of what it was and its contents. I know and I suspect most McCrady diners know their food; respect our knowledge and let the food tell the tale"

  • "Superb food; professional, properly trained staff; very comfortable interiors One issue-maître d attempted to seat us at the table nearest the entrance in a mostly empty dining room. Maybe do that to/for college kids, otherwise bad form Thankfully the rest of our experience trumped his miscue."

  • "My husband and I made our first trip to Charleston for 2 1/2 days and were amazed by the history, architectural renovations and stellar food. We dined at three wonderful restaurants ( including The Ordinary , Husk and McCradys) each with it's own character and food specialities. McCradys was a true highlight. The food preparation was creative and outstanding. Each course was a feast for the eyes, ears and palate. We would fly back to Charleston in a heartbeat to eat at McCradys again which was our personal favorite. Thanks for the memories!"

  • "Just one of those nights in the restaurant business, I guess. Had an 8:15pm reservation. We finally got seated at 8:50pm. They were apologetic, but we really weren't expecting to have to wait that long. Tough way to start with a high end restaurant. Food is very creative and well prepared and presented. Wine list is very good, not great, but very good. Could use more depth in New World Chardonnay section. Service was impressive. Staff knows their product and is proud of it. We would go back, but not before trying other great restaurants in Charleston."

  • "We were visiting Charleston and chose McCrady's from our guidebook. What a find! We have excellent restaurants in our area so for me to give McCrady's an outstanding ovation is high praise. One of the best meals I've ever had plus attentive service handling a food allergy made this an evening to remember. Go if you're in Charleston."

  • "If you are looking for a great place to impress out of town guests, or an upscale dining experience McCrady's is the place to visit. The building has old world charm with a new age feel. The tasting menu was a culinary treat. I couldn't even begin to describe all 7 courses, they were all so eloquently executed. Our favorite was the simplicity of the ice cream. The service was very friendly and knowledgeable. Hurry up and reserve your table tonight."
